5-0 out of 5 stars Details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times
Safari: A Chronicle Of Adventure details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times. Bull is an environmentalist, so his survey Safari isn't your typical gun-hunter's celebration of good old days, but a survey of conflicts between hunting and conservation, weapons and transport, game control and more. From economics and financers of the safari to mishaps, adventures, and famous personalities involved in safaris, vintage black and white photos pair with wide-ranging personal and political stories for maximum effect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull
A wonderful book covering the beginnings of the African Safari to the present. Many current authors use this book as reference for their own books such as Peter Beard, Bibi Jordan, Kuki Gallman, and Mirella Ricciardi. If all of these authors use this book as a reference and quote it throughout their own books it has just got be good. I recommend it highly for any African Safari book collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more factual than Hancock's other books....
This is a very provocative book, but in the main, this is because the set of historical theories, as laid out, are so sweeping in scope, rather than because the theories are altogether ill founded.Rather than creating the story from scratch, one can make a case that Hancock brought widely separated, but quite genuine, pieces of history together to create a complete picture.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book got me back into reading after college...
During college I had lost the joy of reading. In my early post grad school years, a friend recommended this fascinating book to me, and it got me back into reading...and I discovered history, what I SHOULD have majored in. Ethiopia in particular is one of the most fascinating countries on earth. Endlessly fascinating...

4-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS BOOK!
Yes, I could not put this book down!WOW!Why 4 stars though?Graham Hancock is not a bible expert in a spiritual way, but he's a great detective!I did not like the middle of the book where he gives his own whacky biblical views, because this departs from the main detective story. He returns to it though after a few pages and all is well again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for planning multicountry itineraries
As most of the reviews point out, the battle here is between Lonely Planet and Rough Guide.I bought them both, as I usually do before a big trip, and after studying them both will take the RG.They are both good in terms of information on hotels and restaurants, I just found the layout of RG a bit better.Cultural and travel basics are better organized up front, the maps are larger and much clearer, and the references to the maps in the text easier to decipher. But for me the big plus is that the RGcontains much better information about moving between countries, and information about specific transport options from area to area - boat, bus, train - is much more detailed. If you are planning a multi-country itinerary the RG is, IMHO, much better. They are both equal in terms of info, I think, I just feel like for me RG got the details right.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent But Not Great
The Rough Guide series is nice, if sometimes odd, for understanding what to do and what not to do in particular countries or regions. Usually, its best to get both Rough Guide and Lonely Plaent and compared the information between the two, just to avoid any unfortunate occurances. But thats just me. Anyway, this book basically covers travel in West Africa: Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, the Gambia, Cabo Verde, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. Theres basic travel information, as well as notes for getting into and out of each country, and things you can do while your there. Maps, religious information, notes on social mores, currency info, food and so forth are all covered throughout the book. There are also some useful phrases in French (the most widely spoken language in West Africa), as well as some phrases in Hassaniya Arabic, Mandinka, Bamana, Twi, Susu, Hausa, Yoruba and other indigenous languages.2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best investment
At the moment, there are two main contenders on the market with comparable books on West Africa: Rough Guide and Lonely Planet. Neither is perfect.Read more

This book teaches so much about traditional African religion -- Yoruba, voodoo, et. al.The beautiful photos show how to propitiate the African gods better than any text I have ever seen. Each photo is worth more than a thousand words -- a MILLION is more like it!I had never seen Eshu/Legba with the phallus that I had only read about before Soul of Africa. This is a good book for someone who wishes to incorporate the best of African religion -- taking away some of the prudishness found in diaspora/New World/syncretic Catholic Santeria. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Safari Essential
This guide book was a gift to me as I prepared for my first safari.I debated whether to bring it because of the extreme weight limit on luggage. However, it was as essential as my camera and binoculars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy
I purchased this book. I was so impressed with this book that I told the other people going to Africa with us about it. A number of them have purchased this book, also. It has everything in it to make to record your safari. It is packed with information. It includes pages for addresses, checklists for packing, itineraries, animal identification, and of course, plenty of pages for journalling.

1-0 out of 5 stars pretty much useless - didn't even take it with me to Africa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide, esp. in comparison to the LP
I lived in SA for about 5 months. We had both the LP and the Rough Guide and although it was nice to have both, I would recommend the Rough Guide if you were just going to choose one book. I found the Rough Guide to be a little more accurate in the prices listed and the organization to be far superior to the LP. The LP was helpful with more general information, but the Rough Guide provided more information on the little, out of the way places. If you plan on using hostels, it is imperative to pick up a Coast to Coast after arriving. It is a compelation of hostels, organized by area, that is put out by the hostels of SA. It also includes hostels in Swaziland, Lesotho, and Mozambique. Most hostels involved with the book have free copies that you can take.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells you all you need to know
A well researched book giving all the tips and hints that one needs to know about South Africa. The book doesn't waste your time by making recommendations and then slating them (as other guide books tend to do).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion
Accurate and well-researched book. The recommendationsare generally spot on. Nicely written, it's like travelling aroundwith a friend who really knows the place. As someone who lives in South Africa, it's reassuring to know that there are books that are able to talk frankly about the crime situation without getting into a froth of paranoia. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
This book I probably would give 3 and a half stars if the amazon rating system allowed it.It is well written and engaging. My criticisms are that he tends to use 10 dollar words when 2 dollar words would have been fine. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since it expands one's vocabulary, but I found myself going to the dictionary a few more times than I would have liked.

2-0 out of 5 stars not the best choice, perhaps
When my sister, and neice and myself went to Egypt in 1997, we took three guide books. The Fodors, Lets Go, and the Rough Guide. We threw the Fodors, and Lets Go out in Luxor, and used the Rough guide. We loved Egypt, and are planning another trip, Culture Shock would have been a good book to have read first. If you go to Luxor, go stay at Abul Kassem's place, just show up, its always empty. We also loved the Three Corners on the beach at Hurgada. Now i am dreaming again .......

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
In true Fodor's style this book is worth the money. It doesn't contain everything you need to know, but it definitely gives you a good idea what to go see and what not to see.If you are looking for a great pocket reference while you are in Egypt, this is the way to go.I investigated a lot of different books and this was by far the best one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect travel companion for a 1st time traveler to Egypt!
Fodor's Pockeet Egypt, 1999 is a perfect travel companion for the first time visitor as well as return travelers. The illustrations, maps, critical advice and information about going to the middle east is easilyunderstood and helpful.I actually felt much more comfortable going on mytrip after reading Fodor's detailed guide on customs, food, culturaldifferences, hotels, and tour information. It helped me plan the timing inCairo, Luxor, and especially venturing south to less traveled areas. Fodoralso helped prepared me for the costs of the tours, times to go onexcursions as well as food and lodging."This book was my littlebible" while touring this country full of history.I teach the 6thgrade.My social studies curriculum "came to life" with Fodor'shelp while exploring the splendors of "Egypt"! ... The photographs are everything, showing African villagers much as they have lived for the past century. This is not modern Africa, but its last remaining tribal cultures completely tied to the rhythms and livelihood of stoop farming, animal husbandry, and tribal warfare. The people are often beautiful, their adornments alternately colorful and extreme (those lip disks make me wince).

2-0 out of 5 stars Deeply fascinating or just Deeply disturbed?
Peter Beard has not gotten wiser in his old age. He has given into his vices and chosen the superficial payoffs over any morals. He has found no escape from his aimlessness, no direction from his chaotic meanderings. Where has this man ever really gone? Why has he become so tragic? This book reveals the illusion of greatness, the anticipation of accomplishment. But sadly, decades later, we see how withered and little this man has become. One wonders, was he ever even exceptional? He seemed fearless and passionate. Now, he just seems fatally emphatic and senseless. He is like a machine grinding to a halt.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous biography on Peter Beard
"The Adventures and Misadventures of Peter Beard in Africa" is a spectacular look at the life of this well-known photagrapher and author. The writing is vivid and fascinating. The book is also illustrated throughout with Mr.Beard's excellent photographs. This book is a history lesson, ecology lesson, and art lesson all rolled up in one book, and is well worth reading. 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Spectacular!
I find this book to be different from the traditional coffee table books about Ancient Egypt. The photography of Mr. El-Dakhakhny is exquisite and his fondness for Egypt is revealed through his camera. This book depicts Ancient Egypt with beautiful pictures of the pyramids, sphinx, and different temples. In addition, it covers other areas of Egypt and Egyptian life in its different chapters. In the chapter on nature, El-Dakhakhny shows some breath-taking shots of the desert and the Oases; the religion chapter covers Coptic Egypt including the Coptic Pope, monks, ancient monasteries and churches, and in Islamic Egypt it shows beautiful Islamic architecture and mosques. The chapter on traditional Egyptian life is very interesting demonstrating its traditional artisans, the camel market, among other photographs with beautiful color combinations. The last two chapters on modern Egypt and its cities include Cairo, the Nile, Alexandria, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, among other Egyptian cities. Finally the book ends with a beautiful shot of the pyramids at sunset. All in all, this book is an excellent overview of the treasures of Egypt and some aspects of Egyptian life. Therefore, I believe it can be very informative for tourists. I have several coffee table books about Ancient Egypt, but this one is certainly different and worth acquiring!
5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Egypt by El-Dakhakhny
This book has splendid full-color pictures of important tourist
3-0 out of 5 stars A different book about Egypt
This book is a fresh look at Egypt of today as well as great pictorial of Egypt of yesterday, Ancient Egypt. Beyond the realm of travel books, there aren't a lot of pictorials out there about Egypt that combine past and present, this is one of them, and probably the only one. I like it just for that. It has great pictures and some not so great pictures. The spreads are fantastic especially the one of the great pyramids, one of the largest I have seen published. I would buy it just for that picture. One downside of this book is its size, it is hard to fit it among other books due to its unusual landscape layout. Apart from that, if you can afford the hefty price get it. If you have other photo books on Egypt that you're really happy with, you can do without being US$60-75 short. I got to have a signed copy by the author so it was worth it. The author is one of Egypt's most established photographers. ... Read more
