Very nice -- as I have found most Eyewitness Guides.Well organized, current, accurate as far as I could tell.I agreed with reviews of small number/small sample of restuarants and hotels.Guide enhanced an excellent trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous guide
Comprehensive, pictorial. The guide we always look for when planning a trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I've been highly satisfied with the Eyewitness Travel Guide series, and this Egypt edition does not disappoint.Maps are clear and helpful, photos help to explain all of the rich history and culture of Egypt. We brought the Lonely Planet Egypt book with us as well, but we found the Eyewitness Travel Guide to be clearer and simpler to use.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have"
The collaborative effort of travel experts Virginia Maxwell, Mary Fitzpatrick, Siona Jenkins, and Anthony Sattin, Egypt is now in its newly updated and expanded eighth edition as the author-researched, traveler-tested guide from Lonely Planet to experiencing the wonder of the Land of the Pharaohs, whether on a business or pleasure trip. Black-and-white and color maps and photographs illustrate this information-packed guide to key locations in Cairo, the Nile Valley, the Western Desert, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea Coast, and much more. History, hours and admission costs of landmarks, a handful of useful words, and a crash-course in adapting to unfamiliarities of Egyptian culture are among the many useful features that make the 8th edition of Egypt a "must-have".
4-0 out of 5 stars Seems straightforward and comprehensive
Although my trip is still in the planning stages - leave in 2 months - this book has been a real help.I'm learning about Egyptian customs, how to travel in a Muslim nation without undue problems and how to take their beliefs and customs into account.Hopefully this will make me not only a better guest in their country, but a better ambassador for my country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Trip a Good One
I have found Lonely Planet Egypt to be just what I wanted as I plan a long visit there next winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY PLEASANT PICTURE BOOK
I will not add too much to what the other reviewers have opined on this magnificent book.It is gorgeously illustrated with superior photographs and interesting drawings and geographical overviews.5-0 out of 5 stars i drool whenever i look at this book
i don't have this book yet. i have already told hubby that he's getting it for me for valentines. everytime i go into the bookstore, i take it off the shelf and spend about a half hour just leafing through it and looking at the pictures. if you are not sure whether you want to put out the money to buy this book, do yourself a favor and see if they have a copy at the bookstore and look through it. i know you'll be convinced that it's worth the price. i plan on ordering my book rather than buying it off the shelf. there are several fold out sections in the book and i want to make sure they are in good shape. the pictures of the temples and tombs in the book are great. also lots of maps. i admit, i'm an egyptology geek, but i think anyone who is interested in egypt will enjoy this book. if egypt is a hobby/passion, this book is a must have. i know it's a bit pricey, but you're payig for a book full of fantastic color photographs and you defintiely get what you are playing for. you get your money's worth with this book. my only regret is that i have to wait 6 weeks til i can have my copy in my hot lil' hands. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid book on Egypt's splendors
I first saw this book after a four-week trip to Egypt, where our travels included as much as we could see between the relocated monument Ramses II built in honor of himself at Abu Simbel to the vicinity of El-Qahira (Cairo) and its monuments and museums. This book is the one I have chosen to "keep my memories fresh" and share them with others- it is that good, and more. The illustrations are brilliant; the informative text is thorough and illuminating without being pedantic or burying the photos and drawings. I only wish the Cairo Museum had books as good as this one! If you love Egypt, this book will live an active life on your coffee table. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
All rough guides that I have encountered are chock full of great information. The Egypt guide in particular is one of the best. The number of maps is fantastic and the quality of the information is comparable to what you usually have to visit the site to obtain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves money big time
I went to Egypt in February 2006 with my wife and our two boys (5 and 2.5 years).Although we took a package tour to Hurghada, we actually overnighted there only three nights of the eleven we were in Egypt. The rest we spent moving around (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, busses, train, cruise ship, jeep). For the whole trip we spent around 1000 USD plus the package. We could have easily spent twice as much (or, more precisely -- seen twice as little because the budget was limited) if not the hints in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great So Far
I arrived in Egypt this week and have been using this guide to help me get aquainted with it.I don't have any other guides to compare it to, but I can say that the organization, writing, maps, extras, and overall quality of the book seem to be excellent. It has been very helpful so far.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Egyptian-Arabic This Book is a Must !!!!
This book is outstanding! It gives you everything that you will need. One thing I would advise is to couple it with something audible because the Egyptian language is very particular in pronunciations. Most of their vowel sounds are quite a bit different from English. Just one slip of the tongue and you could be saying "I want to go to the bathroom" or "I want to eat pigeon"
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go To Egypt Without This!!!!
I love this book!!! When in Egypt this June, I used it to my heart's content. Thanks to this book, I have learned very much in speaking the Arabic language. Being a student of Arabic, I found this small phrasebook even more efficient in teaching me than my textbook from school! It is simply awesome. Although the grammar could have been talked about more, I found this book a life-saver in many situations while being in North Africa. This book will teach you pronunciation, the Arabic alphabet, numbers, and thousands of useful phrases whilst in Egypt. The best Arabic-learning tool out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Arabic Phrasebook!
This is one of the most thorough, and easy to use Arabic phrasebooks I have ever used. Covers traveler's issues (tickets, directions, hotels, etc), but also includes food/eating, health/emergencies, entertainment, general conversation, and other everyday topics as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be visiting or living in Arabic-speaking parts of the world. Great for students of Arabic as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books ever written
When I read Chapter 13 of this book where he describes the scene in Paris where 'Ferguson' is eating his breakfast and generally ripping them off as he pretends to guide them to the Louvre I had to put the book down because I was giggling and laughing so hard. Even now when I reread it for the 100th time it never gets old. Anyone who feels Twain was racist doesn't get how universally he applies his satire.
5-0 out of 5 stars Irreverent and satiric - traveler Twain
The great humor and satirical power of Mark Twain are evident often in this work. As his ability at precise observation and understanding. His account of the 'Holy Land'as wasteland is still one of the best descriptions ever given about the Middle East.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Travel Book from 1869 That's Worth Reading Today
Reading early Mark Twain is like watching a young David Letterman. The brilliance is there, but its owner is still learning how to use it. In 1867, Twain was dispatched by a San Francisco newspaper to be a passenger on the first organized tour group of Americans making their way through Europe and the Near East. In 1869, he reworked his newspaper dispatches into something resembling a book, although that book is more like Gulliver's Travels than Moby-Dick. Twain's modern detractors don't approve of how he wrote so dismissively about "the natives." What they overlook is that he is even more cutting when he is writing about the pious, provincial Americans he is traveling with. The Innocents Abroad is one of the first books that grapples with what it means to be an American. And it's a lot more fun to read than Henry James. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book doesn't live up to the Title
The author shows little respect for Ethiopians in General, numerous instances he describes Ethiopians artifacts as "meager", "dingy" etc. This is unacceptable in my opinion because if your going to write about a place then at least be respectful of the place and the people, the author shows little respect for the overall Culture. Ethiopia has been through many violent episodes in the past so if little fragments of history survive in a tarnished manner take account of the fact that wars are usually unkind to places where wars were fought. I read the intro and noticed the author focused on the Names Aksum which is correct towards one of the ancient name of Ethiopia, also correctly naming Kush a neighboring country north of Ethiopia that impressed me so I bought the book anticipating some quality information. After receiving and reading the first 15 pages the author begins to show his unethusiatic attitutde for Ethiopian History which turned off this reader so I returned my copy and will continue searching for quality unbiased information for Ethiopia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be Cautious of the Title
I purchased this book because I was looking for an in-depth study of Ethiopian culture, both past and present. However, it soon became apparent that the book's subtitle "A Cultural and Historical Guide" was somewhat misleading.Rather, Mr. Munro-Hay provides a detailed and scholarly analysis of Ethiopian historical sites. The publisher would have been well-advised to use the subtitle "An Archaeological Survey" instead. If that is what you're looking for, then this book is ideal. But if you want information on contemporary Ethiopian culture, it would be best to look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars An explorer's companion
Although not a "tourist guide" this book is a handy reference for anyone with interest in this land.Munro-Hay's subtitle: The Unknown Land provides a clue to the problem he faced in summarizing the history and culture of this ancient country.Known to early Christians as the land of "Prester John," Ethiopia's nearly landlocked location and rugged terrain has made it a challenge to scholars for millennia.Munro-Hay makes an earnest effort to enlighten us on many aspects of Ethiopian history and culture.Rather than provide a surface overview, he divides the country into regions based on ancient kingdoms. It's an effective means of organizing the complex store of research he's brought to the task. I have gathered several books on travel to Egypt, Lonely planets, Passport, Travelers Key, DK eyewitness(second fave) and this one I would rate the best. Its got tons of great pictures, some of which I haven't seen in other books, plus its very full on information.Usually with such books its either tons of info and few pictures or vice versa. This one balances both well.It also has some nice maps and diagrams (tomb layouts, pyramid chambers)a section rating hotels and restaurants, a small section on usefull arabic terms, and a book and movie guide with egyptian themes. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Asiatic Facial Features of the Sphinx........
What an astounding read!Author Peter Tompkins has written the one book that can be called 'must read' for anyone wishing to peel back a bit the veil shrouding the Great Pyramids at the Giza Plateau. It has always been my personal conviction, after watching Discovery documentarys about the pyramids in Egypt, that whoever built this singular remaining 7th Wonder of the World were masters of precision and material construction. Most striking to me is that since these mammoth structures are 40 stories tall, once having a limestone polished and near seamless mantle however many eons ago, and are in no way a product of mass work force - not by conventionary (hauling stones by rope and ramp) means anyway. If these pyramids, the great pyramid in particular, are so exact in their layout, then whoever built them must have left a clue as to who they were, where they came from.It is my absolute belief that the sphinx is the answer for several reasons.#1) In ancient Hindu culture there were (still exist?) statues of a mans body having a lions face.Obviously, the sphinx is simply a reversal of this theme.#2) In the Baghavad Gita, it speaks of a Hindu/Indian king travelling to what is now Cairo, establishing a society there, and accomplishing many spectacular feats.#3) Because whoever built these pyramids of Giza were highly advanced, which should be of no debate anymore, they did in fact leave several clues, the most important of which is the Sphinx.Debate has waged for thousands of years, across the globe, as to who were the pyramid builders?Well, in the face of the Sphinx I think there lies a secret, or rather a blatant hint, that being the high cheek bones of the personified once ruler or king, as well as the wonderful symmetry of the eye structure.Because of this symmetry, emphasising as well the astounding symmetry present in the pyramid itself and its many oddities, I cannot think anything other than that the original builders of the Great Pyramid at Giza where of some Asiatic ancestry. Please allow me to excerpt Tompkins Introductory paragraphs, which beyond everything else making this book the only authoritative scientific examination of the pyramids' origin yet published. Here goes, prepared to be puzzled: (the following is close to verbatim)
4-0 out of 5 stars Very intruiging book
A friend of mine recommended that I read this book, so I picked up a copy from the library and sat down one night to start reading it.I then proceeded to stay up until 6 AM because it was such an interesting book that I didn't want to put it down.If it were not for the vast amounts of evidence that Tompkins provides, I would have dismissed his theory (that the pyramids were designed and built by a very advanced race who existed before the Egyptians) as a wacky conspiracy theory.I am still not completely convinced that he is correct in his theories, but I am doing more research into the subject as a result of this book.Other authors seem to agree with his conclusions (i.e. Graham Hancock, John West, Robert Bauval, etc.), and they provide further evidence, so it is not something you can simply dismiss.Even if you disagree with Tompkin's conclusions, this book will make you think. All of the exceptional properties of the pyramid which Tompkin outlines cannot all be coincidental as conventional Egyptologists claim, so at the very least Tomkins provides a rather stunning blow to contemporary Egyptology.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Classic Great Pyramid Book!
Secrets of the Great Pyramids is the original book that first alighted my interest in ancient Egypt, Atlantis, and the mystery of who we really are. Richly illustrated with photographs, engravings, and diagrams, it still inflames my imagination about this only existing wonder of the ancient world.

2-0 out of 5 stars not the best choice, perhaps
When my sister, and neice and myself went to Egypt in 1997, we took three guide books. The Fodors, Lets Go, and the Rough Guide. We threw the Fodors, and Lets Go out in Luxor, and used the Rough guide. We loved Egypt, and are planning another trip, Culture Shock would have been a good book to have read first. If you go to Luxor, go stay at Abul Kassem's place, just show up, its always empty. We also loved the Three Corners on the beach at Hurgada. Now i am dreaming again .......

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
In true Fodor's style this book is worth the money. It doesn't contain everything you need to know, but it definitely gives you a good idea what to go see and what not to see.If you are looking for a great pocket reference while you are in Egypt, this is the way to go.I investigated a lot of different books and this was by far the best one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect travel companion for a 1st time traveler to Egypt!
Fodor's Pockeet Egypt, 1999 is a perfect travel companion for the first time visitor as well as return travelers. The illustrations, maps, critical advice and information about going to the middle east is easilyunderstood and helpful.I actually felt much more comfortable going on mytrip after reading Fodor's detailed guide on customs, food, culturaldifferences, hotels, and tour information. It helped me plan the timing inCairo, Luxor, and especially venturing south to less traveled areas. Fodoralso helped prepared me for the costs of the tours, times to go onexcursions as well as food and lodging."This book was my littlebible" while touring this country full of history.I teach the 6thgrade.My social studies curriculum "came to life" with Fodor'shelp while exploring the splendors of "Egypt"! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Spectacular!
I find this book to be different from the traditional coffee table books about Ancient Egypt. The photography of Mr. El-Dakhakhny is exquisite and his fondness for Egypt is revealed through his camera. This book depicts Ancient Egypt with beautiful pictures of the pyramids, sphinx, and different temples. In addition, it covers other areas of Egypt and Egyptian life in its different chapters. In the chapter on nature, El-Dakhakhny shows some breath-taking shots of the desert and the Oases; the religion chapter covers Coptic Egypt including the Coptic Pope, monks, ancient monasteries and churches, and in Islamic Egypt it shows beautiful Islamic architecture and mosques. The chapter on traditional Egyptian life is very interesting demonstrating its traditional artisans, the camel market, among other photographs with beautiful color combinations. The last two chapters on modern Egypt and its cities include Cairo, the Nile, Alexandria, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, among other Egyptian cities. Finally the book ends with a beautiful shot of the pyramids at sunset. All in all, this book is an excellent overview of the treasures of Egypt and some aspects of Egyptian life. Therefore, I believe it can be very informative for tourists. I have several coffee table books about Ancient Egypt, but this one is certainly different and worth acquiring!
5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Egypt by El-Dakhakhny
This book has splendid full-color pictures of important tourist
3-0 out of 5 stars A different book about Egypt
This book is a fresh look at Egypt of today as well as great pictorial of Egypt of yesterday, Ancient Egypt. Beyond the realm of travel books, there aren't a lot of pictorials out there about Egypt that combine past and present, this is one of them, and probably the only one. I like it just for that. It has great pictures and some not so great pictures. The spreads are fantastic especially the one of the great pyramids, one of the largest I have seen published. I would buy it just for that picture. One downside of this book is its size, it is hard to fit it among other books due to its unusual landscape layout. Apart from that, if you can afford the hefty price get it. If you have other photo books on Egypt that you're really happy with, you can do without being US$60-75 short. I got to have a signed copy by the author so it was worth it. The author is one of Egypt's most established photographers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern slavery, boy soldiers and African Diaspora
This is a fascinating account of how orphaned Sudanese displaced in struggles with northern miltias, found new lives in the US. The volume is particularly useful because it shows the connection between wars of religion and region, the slaving expeditions conducted by janjaweed Islamic militias, and the politics of recruiting for rebel liberation movements in the south. Short on arms, money, soldiers and international sympathy, the southern Sudanese seek international attention to the problems of post-colonial boundaries and rights. They have learned to use the politics of refugee camps to leverage attention and forces. The fortitude of these survivors is amazing, no matter how complicated the story of their displacement turns out to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It
We had five travel books going into a one week trip to Cairo last month. After one day we realized the quality of this guide and tossed the others back in the bag.We stayed in the heart of Islamic Cairo, so the detailed information on that part of the city was especially helpful. There are even several walking paths that the author maps out to help you make the most out of your sight seeing.Other guides might have a lot of colorful pictures, but the quality of information is not even comparable.Several pages started falling out of the guide by the end of our trip because of overuse!5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This guide is excellent. I lived in Cairo for a year and this book gives you a lot of "inside" information for anyone who wants to thoroughly explore the city.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to have, but not as your only guide
During our recent trip to Egypt, we found this guide to be extremely helpful. Its information on lodgings, restaurants, and sights is unmatched by other guides. We found it had slightly more information than LonelyPlanet Egypt, but we could easily have gotten by with the latter. It *is*nice to have the smaller volume to carry around in Cario, though.Read more
