4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am planning a trip to Madagascar and found this book a very helpful review of the various parks in the country. The photos are excellent and the discussion of the various mammals are readable but provide enough information to be interesting. This is not a technical book on either mammals or ecosystems, but is a good review of both.Perhaps I was looking for too much from this book, but I would have liked more maps and a bit more guidance on how to combine trips to different ecosystems in one trip.I combine it with the Lonely Planet and can cobble together the information, but it requires quite a bit of work.I also liked the sections on reptiles and insects - many books neglect the little creatures, which can be far more interesting than mammals in some ecosystems.Overall highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
Took this book along with me to Madagascar & was very glad I did. I was able to identify many lemur species I came upon throughout the country from the beautiful, close-up photographs in this book. The descriptive of each species is written in layman's terminology along with scientific names for the more biologically erudite. This really is a terrific book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry to see this book is out of print!
I have had this book for about 4 years now, and I can't believe it's out of print! I have a deep interest and love for the wildlife of Madagascar, and have not been able to find many books that show the diverse life of this endangered island. To no longer have this book is a shame - if you are looking for a beautifully photographed book that chronicles Madagascars wildlife, don't give up on trying to find this book - it's a true gem. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Best English-language guide we've seen
My wife is Malagasy. After over 20 years away, then one exploratory trip, she took me on the next trip.Of the 5 guide books we had, this is the one that she likes best.It is also the book with the most detailed descriptions, from numerous readers who have contributed to Ms. Bradt's editions. It probably also has the best all-around advice. As a traveler, probably from a rich land, to one of the world's poorest places, you will need this advice.

1-0 out of 5 stars A photographer!?!? with questionnable intellectual honesty
I meant to give a rating below 1 Star but since this is the lowest, I hope that potential readers won't throw away their hard earned cash in buying this book. If you still want to buy it, go to your local bookstore as you will have a greater chance of finding a DUSTY copy of this book: ... ... G.P. Barbieri is without contest a good snapshooter if one judges it from the TECHNICAL quality of his work. But where he fails is in his intellectual honesty: How could ... a book [like this be about ]Madagascar if it only contains mediocre nude or semi-nude works done at few huts at the shore of Madagascar? I think and agree with many readers ... that not only exploited anddisrespected his subjects by including them in the wrong publication, but he has also made a disservice for all photographers out there who at least have the decency of intellectual honesty and respect to the art.But then, ... what is art and what isn't?

1-0 out of 5 stars How to Exploit People for Your Own Ends: A Primer
Having travelled in Madagascar, I was very interested to see Barbieri's book, MADAGASCAR, advertised by a bargain books dealer.I've always beenfascinated by that faraway red island of Afro-Indonesian culture, lemurs, and chameleons.Since I'd read a number of good books about the place, none of which had extraordinary pictures, I thought this book would be anexcellent addition to my small collection.I thought wrong.5-0 out of 5 stars This book of extraordinary photographs shows their dignity
I think I must offer this review to help to balance the negative reviews that are here. This is a work of stunningly beautiful photography.Clearly, Barbieri has gone beyond his usual fashion domain with thesephotographs. The works have an anthropological sense, but they show thephotographers great appreciation for the people of the island ofMadagascar. The people come across with immense dignity, even though theirpoverty is sometimes apparent. What nudity is included seems very natural. This book is a fine work of art. ... I have recommended it to all my potential participants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Madagascar
Don't even think about traveling to Madagascar without the Bradt guide! It never left my side during my month-long adventure through the country. Excellent information on the natural and cultural diversity of the island, plus accurate logistical information on where to eat, sleep, etc. Great sidebars from recent and experienced travelers. Don't forget to bring along the Bradt guide to Maddy wildlife too! Bradt is the only source I trust for travel in Madagascar.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is really true!
I enjoyed this book because after visiting Madagascar and returning 5 times it is the most accurate book about what it is really like to be a guest in this beautiful country.I appreaciated the authors respect for the Malagasy people that I have come to love and admire. This is a great treatise in cross-cultural adaptation, wandering through a culture in which you have no clue what the rules and values are about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilariously troubled journey through Madagascar.
The author and her 14-year old daughter Rachel travel through Madagascar, (an island off the coast of East Africa), on foot, hitchhiking, by bus and by taxi. The unusual number of misfortunes besetting them had me hold mystomach with laughter, or cover my mouth in fear. -- Dervla Addict.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Entertaining
This is the second Dervla Murphy book that I've read, and I really enjoyed it.I especially loved the way that she managed to work a great deal of history and basic information in without making it seem that way.Forthose who haven't read it, this is the story of a trip that the author andher daughter make through Madagascar. It is funny, interesting, and fun toread.I especially appreciated the way that Murphy generally managed toavoid the condescending view of people in Third World countries thatbecomes so obnoxious after awhile.I also appreciated the way that she washonest about mistakes that she made and seemed quite able to laugh at herown errors.Much of the information seems accurate as well; when I wasmost of the way through the book I read most of another book giving a basicoverview of Madagascar, its history, culture, and etc. and the majority ofit fit very well with what Murphy discribes here (the differences couldprobably all be explained by the fact that this other book is several yearsnewer). While I have never been to Madagascar, this book made me feel likeI know it and the world a bit better. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "The Indian Ocean" a quick tour of the Eastern Islands
The book is filled with beautiful photographs, and the text borders on poetry--clearly a labor of love by the author and photographers. An excellent book for a quick overview of the islands. There is a section oneach island,, with descriptions of its physical and culturalfeatures.Text and photographs tend to weigh more heavily on the cultural. There iseven a section with useful information for tourists. I would have liked tosee and read more about the unique animals of these islands. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great find for anyone interested in Madagascar
Not many guidebooks venture into both Madagascar AND the Comoros, and I was glad to find one that did - and was even happier to find a "Lonely Planet" guide.Always complete, easy to read, and helpful, this guide is no exception to their standards.Although I haven't travelled to Madagascar yet, this book seems to give quite an honest assesment of travel conditions (not always the best/unpredictible) which I really appreciated. For the 4th largest island, Madagascar doesn't have enough information about it out there - I was glad to find this book, and am secure that it is a reliable source. ...
