4-0 out of 5 stars Modern slavery, boy soldiers and African Diaspora
This is a fascinating account of how orphaned Sudanese displaced in struggles with northern miltias, found new lives in the US. The volume is particularly useful because it shows the connection between wars of religion and region, the slaving expeditions conducted by janjaweed Islamic militias, and the politics of recruiting for rebel liberation movements in the south. Short on arms, money, soldiers and international sympathy, the southern Sudanese seek international attention to the problems of post-colonial boundaries and rights. They have learned to use the politics of refugee camps to leverage attention and forces. The fortitude of these survivors is amazing, no matter how complicated the story of their displacement turns out to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but interesting travel up the Nile
I was lead to this book by Stanley Stewart's successive work "The Empire of Gengis Kahn" which I had found very amusing. This delightful travel book was written more than 10 years ago and this probably explains why it is a little bit outdated and difficult to find. But, we are still reading Robert Byron's "The Road to Oxiana", so that wouldn't be a problem. SS has planned a long trip up to the sources of the White Nile (the longer one) and gets there traveling through Egypt, Sudan and Uganda. He is taking along a girlfriend which is beatiful and proficient in Arabic (who could ask for more?). The trip is "on the rode", so felucas, barges, trains, and lorries are used and planes are reserved only for otherwise unbridgable tracts.

3-0 out of 5 stars A dual quest
Hanny's quest in Africa was two-fold: to enlighten us on the condition of Africanwomanhood, and her desperate need for a toilet. The validity of the first quest is nearlyobscured by her pursuit of the other.Americans bear a world reputation for their obsessionover toilets in other countries.Hanny's frequent assessment of amenities in the Sudan andelsewhere becomes tediously repetitive. One is tempted to ask the location of the return ticketand why it wasn't put to use.Such carping is no longer acceptable, however, and it becomesour duty to cheer her perseverance and fortitude as she continues to address the moreimportant issue.5-0 out of 5 stars A master storyteller who is also self-revealing
The courage of the author to undertake her adventure of traveling in Africa solo with a backpack at age 50 is indeed compelling. She is a natural storyteller, yet opens up to reveal her own inner struggles based on a difficult childhood with manipulative parents. Her reporting of the practice of "female circumcision" in parts of Africa is introduced in the book as she was doing research. However, as horrible a thing as this is, she helps the Westerner understand where it comes from and how it plays an integral part in that culture even today while at the same time she fights to abolish it. I didn't want this book to end. I would read another book by her in a nanosecond. She's inspiring, honest, and courageous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sudan before the "troubles"
Asher attached himself to a clan of salt miners who travelled deep into the desert near the border with Chad. His expertise as a former sapper in the British military was put to good use--he was a more skillful digger than his Sudanese companions.
