5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Armenia
I volunteered in Armenia for two months and this book was an indispensable guide throughout my time in Yerevan and beyond. The photos are beautiful and the writing is excellent.I am looking forward to an updated version that includes sights from historical Armenia.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best guide book on Armenia and Artsakh
Highly recommend this book, gives good and accurate information on Armenia and Artsakh. Used it to my trip to Armenia. Was very helpful and gives comprehensive coverage on the country.I think this is the best guide book ever made on Armenia.

1-0 out of 5 stars biased book
The book contains a lot of factual error and represent one-sided pro-Armenian version of the history and the culture of the region. For those who want to know the history of Karabakh I strongly recommend Black Garden by Thomas de Waal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful ...
The Caucasian countries probably constitute the last bastion of the enigmatic destinations in the world and are shrouded in rumors & unclear doubts. The time trusted Lonely Planet is your only hope and probably the only guide that'll help you plan and execute your trip. I recently came back from a short trip to Georgia and found the information remarkably accurate and undoubtedly useful. It'll serve as your lifeline whilst in the Caucasus.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but....
I used the guidebook in all 3 countries within one month of its publication, and found it to be accurate for the most part. However, the authors seemed to be under orders to write glowing reports on anything considered mildly worthwhile to visit. Many of these places were not particularly noteworthy, and after awhile we took each raving description with a grain of salt. For some of the most spectacular sites (Davit Gareja and Kazbegi, both in Georgia) the book really should have included maps. The descriptions of both struck me as being second or third hand, as if the authors themselves had not taken any of the trails they described.

3-0 out of 5 stars slightly better than the last book
I had been anticipating the new LP guide for Armenia for quite awhile. I must admit

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible amounts of information
A comprehensive collection of cartographic information related to Armenian History and Geography. The acompaning text is also very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ideal Historical Atlas
Robert Hewsen's "Armenia A Historical Atlas" is a true masterpiece. This atlas contains 278 detailed color maps that chronicle Armenian history from antiquity to the present day. The maps are meticulously accurate, very detailed and visually appealing. They also show precise topographic, political, religious, onomastic and historical details. There is a mixture of many regional maps, detailed local maps, city maps and even building plans.
5-0 out of 5 stars comprehesive
Although it is published as an atlas, through both historical and contemporary maps, diagrams and text, Robert Hewsen manages to trace all the importantcultural, military, geopolitical and geographic influences and changes within Anatolia and the Caucasian region. For those interested in Armenian, Roman, Persian and Ottoman/Trukish history, it serves as a comprehesive, yet easy source, for both scholar and non-scholar alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch guide for in-country travel
I recently moved to Armenia and purchased this book right before leaving the USA.My interest was mainly to use it to find neat places to go in the countryside, and this book definitely fills that purpose. We live in Yerevan, the capital, which is fairly well documented by the book. 3-0 out of 5 stars good effort
I agree with the other reviewer - it's a good effort and fairly well written. My main issues with this book are 1) that the photographs are incredibly bleak. If I had not visited Armenia last year, I definitely would not have based on the pictures. 2) The Nagorno Karabagh section was very light. It basically seemed like an after thought that was tacked on the last minute.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent effort., well worth buying
This the first guidebook by a major publisher to this wonderful country. The book has a couple of quirks but makes up for itRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Armenian Guide Available
I have lived in Armenia for over a year, and this is by far the most useful guide book on the market. Not only is it a great hiking guide, but it also provides all sorts of useful information about the country and region in a very accessible format. The authors have done a great job selecting hikes from a variety of regions and with varying skill levels.Unlike most guides about Armenia, the directions are up-to-date and easy to follow - a notable accomplishment given the generally poor signage in the country.Even if you aren't planning to hike, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone planning to venture beyond the city limits of Yerevan. It points you to all the best sights.Another bonus is the size - perfect for slipping in a pack or even a pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peace Corps Volunteer in Armenia
As a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Armenia, I have found this guide to be extremely useful.I have used the guide on many occasions for myself and to introduce Armenians to the outdoors. It is offers an excellent introduction to the environmental issues currently surrounding Armenia, current and valuable resource list, and the most current topo hiking maps.It is by no means a complete guide but has some of the more popular areas to hike, some focusing around the Tufenkian hotels (Jeffery is the nephew of the famous carpet producer James Tufankian).Future editions will have more hikes, especially in the northwest section. The climbing section is small but offers some of the best areas to climb. If you are coming to Armenia to hike or climb, then you MUST own this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20+ Great Reasons to Visit Armenia
This is one of the most user-friendly hiking guides I've ever used...it's laid out well, provides great resource information, the descriptions are clear and overall it makes what can be a difficult area to access very accessible. It's without a doubt made my time in the country more enjoyable and interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Armenian life in Ottoman surroundings
"Efronia" provides an extraordinary and very sentimental account of the unwarranted suffering of the Armenian people through political oppression and religious discrimination, which was not averted, although itwas permanently visible to the international community. The specific caseof Efronia clearly illustrates the way this segregation could affect theindividual's life and her state of mind. An excellent book for anyone whowants a real person's perspective on a subject generally known only fromthe dry and fact-based point of view of history books and wishes to becomeacquainted with the historical and cultural background of the Armenianpeople.

1-0 out of 5 stars Review of
I've never seen this edition, but I hope this edition is better than the previous one.
1-0 out of 5 stars Last Lonely Planet publication I have bought
I purchase travel guides for work and have been regular buyer of Lonely Planet publications and Discovery channel's Insight Guides for virtually all Western European countries. Recent addition to the area of responsibility forced me to start looking for a guide for Azerbaijan and this was one of the items I tested. 1-0 out of 5 stars Another dent in LP's reputation
Very poor from start to finish !The last 10 years LP has published several very average books.I used to like LP a lot but I now prefer Rough Guide, Trailblazer or Footprint.I think LP's main mistake with this book was that they wanted to publish a guide to this region at all costs, just to fill the blank spots on their world map.How were these authors selected ?Many would do a better job.LP books used to be written by fellow travellers who knew what other travellers were looking for when travelling. Why are there e.g. so few (cheap)hotels listed ?I found an affordable place to stay in every town I visited. With a little bit of effort, the practical information would have been much better.Leave this book at home, better buy Mark Elliot's book for Azerbaijan (and Georgia) or the Bradt guide to Georgia (Burford) or consult Raffi Kojian's excellent website for Armenia. ...
