does not contain much..
this rough guide isn pretty much the same as the other guides.. as usual in singapore it contains the usual places.. orchard, little india, sentosa, east coast and the usual touristy places. It does not include the heartlanders area eg. Hougang, Yishun etc. For eg, in woodlands.. it only mention the the zoo.. did you know that's a big Shopping Mall in Woodlands called the Causeway point.. nect to the MRT station.. As for eating places.. it fail to capture the good places for local food.. may interest the food lovers and those adventourous enough to try.. Not bad...but could've been better
This guide is great, at least from a pre-trip standpoint. When it comes to planning a trip to Malaysia, the historical and cultural aspects of the book are above reproach. The authors clearly know their way around the country. But that doesn't translate into using the book when you get to Malaysia. While hotel prices are listed, they're done so using a code system, forcing readers to continue flipping back to the key located early on in the guide. I've relied on Lonely PLanet's guidebook before, and I'll keep doing so - only because its layout is superior to the Rough Guide.

More than just hotel and restaurant reviews
Even if your not planning on taking a trip to Malaysia anytime soon, this book will prove an interesting read for those who love learning about the world.I recently took on the task of writing a paper about Malaysia for a college-level geography class.There were certainly more traditional reference guides at my disposal, but I found this book to be more informative than any other book I used.Unlike most other travel guide series', Rough Guides do an excellent job of not only making sure travelers know where to stay and what to eat, but how NOT to make fools of themselves by ignoring local customs and traditions.This guide through Malaysia is no exception.The section on Singapore and Brunei provide significant, and substantial information, while the chapter on Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, answered every question a traveler could possibly think of.Every part of the guide proved truly helpful in my research and study.And more than anything, it has inspired me to visit the place that I've learned so much about as a good travel guide should. ... Very handy and up-to-date
On a trip (back) to Malaysia in Feb 06, this guide came in very handy for a lot of locations in the big city. A very good reference that I carried around.
good little book

Insight Pocket Guides, Sabah Borneo, is a great book for the traveler who plans on going to Sabah.The author, Wendy Hutton put together a very compact travel guide with lots of useful information.One of the bestparts of the book, is that it includes a very good map of Sabah with thedifferent excursions and day trips highlighted.The traveler who likes toorganize their trips in advance will like the ideas that are Ms. Hutton hasgiven.It allows a person to see all aspects of Sabah and to get into theculture and history of the state.In the back of the book is several pagesof practical information including places to stay.For the nature lover,the book is full of wonderful ideas to see the flora and fauna.Anyonetraveling to Sabah should look at this book and some of the recomended bythe author, especially on the history of the area. ... An excellent masterpiece, like most Lonely Planet guidebooks
Lile most Lonely Planet guidebooks, this travel guide won't come as a disappointment to any of its readers.The unmistakable excellent standards we can expect from LP, combined with the fact that this particular guidebook is in its 8th edition already, makes of this book a masterpiece no traveller to the region should leave behind.The information about hotels and restaurants, things to see and do, etc, is dense, well-written, excellently ordered, and up-to-date.Likewise, the maps, the various tips on do's and dont's, are invaluable.As always, the sections on history, politics, culture etc, are excellently written and well condensed, ensuring pleasant reading for the traveller and the prospective traveller alike.Without exaggerating nor diminishing the fascination of this wonderful part of the world, this guidebook does great service to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.It is the ultimate travel tool for those intending to visit these countries, enabling them to make the most out of their stay, as well as ensuring moments of fascinating reading.

Not too impressive
First, if you're going to rely on this guide, spend some cash on a couple of decent maps, especially for Kuala Lumpur. This guide has by far some of the most off-the-mark maps I've ever experienced with Lonely Planet. DO NOT rely on the book! As well, some amazing hotels are missing, and they're literally next door to some pretty grotty places the authors here rave about. IT IS A BIBLE
We ended up calling it "the Bible". Why? Because all the answers are in it.!! Several times we said to our selves that this information should have been in LP. And looking one more time - it was usually there. LP helps you plan and avoid vasting time. Of course you shold try to do things which is not mentioned in LP but this can be a major challanges. The guide goes every where and the information is incredibly reliable. So if you go - bring LP or bring no guide book at all - alternatives are poor sustitutions. Recycled out-of-date guidebook
I was very disappointed with this book and I supposed I should have known better - Insight Guides tend to recycle the same information and photos from the 80's all the time in so called "new editions". ... . The book's first edition comes from 1982 and besides updating a few passages, there is nothing new in here. The tips for where to go can be found in the Malaysian Tourism Board's website and the photos there would be MUCH newer! Save your money and spend on a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet instead! ... Very Few Info on KL
This is not a recommended book if you have only some days in KL. Lack of information. Too many detail about points of interest, restaurants and hotels were uncovered.
Even has good food picks!
Went to Penang with this last month. Typical quality LP job in describing the country and how to get around. What made this one a cut above is that it actually had useful restaurant recommendations, as opposed to the typical LP approach (i.e.: Here's the address of a place that serves food; hope you don't get hepatitis). Hotel recommendations were spot-on as well.

Captivating, but lacking in a few aspects
This book is not just for reading -- its forte is viewing pleasure. The 400+ magnificient full colour pictures depicting the biodiversity of the Malaysian region enthralls and captivates, the only deficiency being thatsome of Sarawak's ( East Malaysia ) prominent tourist destinations weregiven insufficient coverage. There were pictures of the Orang Asli,orang-utans and various other flora and fauna indigenous to the region, butthere was scarce mention of the Lambir Waterfalls and the Niah CaveSystems, which, in my estimation, are absolute wonders ofnature.Read more
