4-0 out of 5 stars Singapore Brought to Life
Seduced as I am by the highly glossy, supremely compact and wonderfuly illustrated DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, I suppose I am somewhat biased as a reviewer. The combination of succinct text, numerous useful details, spectacular photographs, eyecatching 3-D graphical images, and user-friendly maps make the Eyewitness Travel Guides uniquely useful, distinctive and even collectable. The new Singapore book is no exception to these considerations, so much so, I wish I had it my disposal when I visited there last year, if only for the invaluable details it provides. Now shortly before leaving for Singapore once again, I have recently acquired this book, and it has whetted my appetite, by reminding me of the places, the colors, the smells, the greenery, the heat, and the vibrancy I had already experienced. It has also made it quite clear, exactly how much I missed last time, particularly in terms of wildlife reserves, museums, and galleries. The book contains a brief, but informative overview of the history and multi-cultural nature of this exciting island country. As with other titles in the series, the guide enables the user-traveler to gain maximum benefit from his or her visit, by highlighting THE places to visit, and what to expect from these experiences. If I have any criticisms of this, and indeed with many other Eyewitness Travel Guides, it is a shade small, with tiny text font, and it is a tad too short for my liking. But I guess they have to fit comfortably into your pocket, and, in any case, you cannot have too much of a good thing, otherwise you may just stay at home and gloat over the marvellous pictures. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars does not contain much..
this rough guide isn pretty much the same as the other guides.. as usual in singapore it contains the usual places.. orchard, little india, sentosa, east coast and the usual touristy places. It does not include the heartlanders area eg. Hougang, Yishun etc. For eg, in woodlands.. it only mention the the zoo.. did you know that's a big Shopping Mall in Woodlands called the Causeway point.. nect to the MRT station.. As for eating places.. it fail to capture the good places for local food.. may interest the food lovers and those adventourous enough to try.. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad...but could've been better
This guide is great, at least from a pre-trip standpoint. When it comes to planning a trip to Malaysia, the historical and cultural aspects of the book are above reproach. The authors clearly know their way around the country. But that doesn't translate into using the book when you get to Malaysia. While hotel prices are listed, they're done so using a code system, forcing readers to continue flipping back to the key located early on in the guide. I've relied on Lonely PLanet's guidebook before, and I'll keep doing so - only because its layout is superior to the Rough Guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just hotel and restaurant reviews
Even if your not planning on taking a trip to Malaysia anytime soon, this book will prove an interesting read for those who love learning about the world.I recently took on the task of writing a paper about Malaysia for a college-level geography class. There were certainly more traditional reference guides at my disposal, but I found this book to be more informative than any other book I used.Unlike most other travel guide series', Rough Guides do an excellent job of not only making sure travelers know where to stay and what to eat, but how NOT to make fools of themselves by ignoring local customs and traditions. This guide through Malaysia is no exception. The section on Singapore and Brunei provide significant, and substantial information, while the chapter on Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, answered every question a traveler could possibly think of.Every part of the guide proved truly helpful in my research and study. And more than anything, it has inspired me to visit the place that I've learned so much about as a good travel guide should. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars useful addition to the conventional guidebooks
On our recent first trip to Singapore, we found the list of the top 25 to be a great guideline in constructing our own daily itinerary...it was a good source of ideas and helped us to prioritize our time. The additional "best" lists were also helpful. The book is very light and thin, making it convenient to take with you.I would definitely buy the equivalent book for visiting any big city that was new to me. Although it was well worth the price, it is also too light on content to be the only guidebook and it didn't provide the accurate detail necessary to get the most out of the places recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars all the details, mostly up to date
However, note that the Chinese Opera Circle is not necessarily done every Friday and Saturday night. Some nights they have not bookings.Call ahead to make sure that they are going to perform.

5-0 out of 5 stars ILiked the Way s In Which It Was Unexpectedly Helpful
While this guide was useful in all the mundane ways (accomodation, eating), I'm grateful to for the way it got me thinking about some of the less understandable aspects of Singapore. After a couple of days of walking around S'pore I began to wonder at the odd sense of artificiality about the place, and the strange way my hosts and others talked of the city-state.I was glad to be reffered to Stan Sesser's book *The Lands of Charm and Cruelty*, which told me of "the fear that even the best educated Singaporeans feel towards their government."I am also grateful to this guide for steering me towards Ian Buruma's essay "The Nanny State of Asia," in his book *The Missionary and the Libertine*, which went into a lot of detail about the police state behind the facade of Singapore's clean toilets, etc.The guide was useful in all practical matters, but by dealing with some of the unpleasantness that is the reality of Singapore, I came away with a better understanding of the place which grew increasingly creepy the longer I stayed.Lonely Planet Singapore is an excellent, thoughtful guide that did what it was supposed to do, yet also led me to other books which helped enrich my business trip. For understanding some aspects of Chinese behaviour in a business setting, I also recommend Bo Yang's *The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis in Chinese Culture*.Paul Theroux's *Saint Jack* is a novel set in Singapore - though written in the 70's, I found the attitudes and actions of many of the characters still relevant to locals and expats of Singapore today.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference for Getting Around
...We found this book to be a very solid reference for transportation and side trips.Compared to Fodor's Singapore guide, which we also carried, this book has more accurate and helpful information on sightseeing and transportation options, e.g., local places to buy bus or ferry tickets for side trips in Malaysia and Indonesia. The book is also a good source of ideas for exploring outlying islands, forests, and neighboring cities.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fodor's Singapore 12th Ed.
The book has most of the items that are necessary to the traveler, i.e. the section in the beginning, "Smart Travel Tips,"; however, there should be a section describing a brief history of Singapore and there should be a more detailed description of the walking tours, including better maps, of the ethnic neighborhoods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars love this city!
singapore is a lovely city and i enjoyed it so mmuch more than i thought, especially after using the Gorovy Map n Guide. This city used to be dull and boring, now it's changed and has a vibrancy and cultural life that buzzes. The Groovy guide part tells you where to go and tips and advice on the Top 10 things you should do if you are here for a short stay. The food section is very useful as was the Groovy Stuff section. I totally recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A really fun guide
I liked this guide for singapore as much as the groovy guide for hong kong which i also got for my trip to SE Asia. The Singapore guide was up-to-date and had lots of information on what to do during a 4 day stay or longer. The Map side is chock full of icons and color-coded too so it was easy to follow and find out where places were located: dining, bars, cafes, shops and so on. Easy! The guide is amusingly written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sketches of Singapore architecture
The watercolours of colonial architecture by Graham Byfield do greater justice than mimetic photography in this instance. There is a nostalgic quality that is retained by preserving images of old Singapore buildings - some of which are no longer with us, such as the Katong Red Bakery, in this manner.
