Pamuk spans the distances of time and memory in this novel as he searches for the meaning of the melancholy, or huzun as he calls it, of the city of Instanbul.Born into a wealthy Turkish family, Pamuk slowly watches his family's fortune dissolve in the hands of his father. He recounts his memories as his family moves from one quarter to another, interspersing personal accounts with various literary observations.Through it all we experience the uneasy balance between Islamic and Western forces that have shaped the city over the centuries. He explores through the writings of Europeans, how foreigners perceive the city, and how Turkish writers have attempted to respond to these views.Pamuk has such an elegant way of writing, with many undercurrents, like the Bosphorus which he so much loves.I particularly liked his literary chapters, like that of the four melancholy writers of Istanbul, and their attempts to forge an identity for the city. These attempts may have fallen short of their grand expectations, but the books became treasures, and helped to define modern Turkish writing. There are also his amusing observations on Flaubert, Nerval and other French writers and painters, who became absorbed in the city and to whom he felt modern Turkish writing owes a substantial debt. While Pamuk tries to escape this melancholy in his painting, ultimately finding a muse on which to hang all his hopes, he can never fully escape it, as he too becomes absorbed in this great city, which proves to be his literary release. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Can pay for itself
We took a cruise that stopped at 5 islands listed in the book and found the information provided helpful to interpreting the cruise line's descriptions and deciding which land tours to take.We were able to by-pass several expensive tours yet see the major sites on our own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the DK travel guides!
The DK books are my favorite travel guides and even though I've never been to Greece (yet!) I still like to page though the book. The pictures and diagrams are gorgeous and I like how the authors always bring the culture and history of the area into the discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is a portable, soft cover, coffee-table book!It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice comprehensive travel aid
This is a reasonably comprehensive travel guide to Turkey. All regions of the country are well covered, with lots of good information on local sites and amenities. It is small enough for travel and is up-to-date. It also includes good basic maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly Illustrated
DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are perfect for your next vacation or they can be illustrated journeys into new worlds you wish you could visit. These guides help me to understand the world and the 1,200 photographs, illustrations and maps in the Eyewitness Turkey Guide are stunning in beauty. I loved the two page spread of the Library of Celsus (one of the most famous Roman sites in Turkey) that is still standing after an earthquake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious photo feast for your eyes, makes you want to go!
I'm a fan of DK publications in general, and their style is well suited for these 'big picture' Eyewitness travel guides. The maps, photos, illustrations and contexts excel at giving you the bird's eye view of what is outstanding in Turkey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
We went to Turkey and this book was the best guide for us. We had a very short time to get ready and this told us everything we needed to know. Culture, food and the way to dress in a Muslim country.Plus, the must see sights. Remember some Mosque and palaces are closed one day a week.

4-0 out of 5 stars difficult to please
Although on the heavy side, I have bought a number of the "eyewitness travel guides" because they are easy to use, and have great pictures - which is very important to me indetermining which places I want to visit, what food I would like to try and so on.The maps are ok, but do not include all the sites in the book.I tried to get the "streetwise" map for the trip because they are awesome, but they don't publish any of Istanbul.Although the guide isn't perfect it is better than the competition - I recommend it.

    Editorial Review

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years, and as a result has experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as other Lonely Planet
As a disclaimer, I am a huge fan of the Lonely Planet travel guides. I like to travel, and have lately traveled to quite a few countries following recommendations from Lonely Planet. Just before going to Turkey, I was in Greece "with Lonely Planet".
1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and out-of-date
This guide is seriously out of date. This applies not only to prices, and relative prices, but also to critical information about what is available and how to find it. Having used it (Sept., 2006), my advice is not to rely on it without checking independently that what it says is available and how to get there is correct. Otherwise you may find that you have been expensely (in time or in money) misled. Since you should check with other sources, you might as well simply forget this guide, which is one of the worst I have ever used. Its recommendations about what is worth seeing and the state of hotels, while often useful, can also be wildly wrong.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reliability is 50-50
My wife and I just returned from a two-week trip to the Aegean coast of Turkey. While we were certainly better off with the LP than without it, we found the sections on the Aegean coast to be unreliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Istanbul
This guide is loaded with information about Istanbul.I have found it very useful in planning my trip.i had at first bought another istanbul guide and found it to be really lacking in substance.Mostly pictures, not much text, lots of platitudes designed to dazzle you, and made of heavy paper that is a drag to carry around.the lonely planet guide is lightweight, informative, good maps, and enough pictures to satisfy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oversells the city.Functional.
This books makes Istanbul sound better than it is.While the "relative" descriptions were accurate (such as place A is better than place B) I was not nearly as impressed by the city as it was described in the book.

    Editorial Review

Joan and David Peterson have their priorities straight: in Turkey as in most places, it's food that comes first. A dictionary of menus and market foods of Turkey, this book is also a paean to Turkish cuisine. The history and culture involved in kebabs and yogurt is fascinating and the food glossary is a great help. Finally, the recipes are a delightful bonus because it's impossible to take an eating tour of Turkey without wanting to sample the goods again and again without having to fly half way around the world every time you crave Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best culinary guide to Turkey--period.
The long title of this book does not even say it all. It's undoubtedly the bestguide to Turkish cuisine *by far*.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not much help for Vegetarians
I bought this book partly because I know thatTurkish food features a lot of meat, and I'll be visiting with my wife who is a vegetarian. Can you believe that a book that is *ALL* about food, does not even mentionvegetarianism, nor when they list "handy phrases for restaurants"do they list any phrases that deal with the topic? For thatmatter, theydon't deal with any topic having to deal with food allergies, being on adiet, etc. Essentially this is a book about helping people make smartchoices when eating in Turkey, but the only people they want to help arepeople who will eat anything.I should have saved my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars No traveler should be without an EAT SMART guide.
The authors have written a series of Eat Smart books that no traveler to foreign countries should be without. Each book covers a separate country--Eat Smart in Turkey, Eat Smart in Brazil, Eat Smart in Indonesiaand Eat Smart in Mexico--and is chock full of information that you won'tfind elsewhere within the covers of one easy-to-carry paperback. Individualchapters cover such topics as the history of the country's cuisine, regional foods, how to shop in the local markets, mail-order sources forsuppliers of ingredients, and a collection of recipes for typical dishesfound in that country. Especially useful is each book's extensive menuguide, listing menu terms alphabetically in the language of the foreigncountry, with a description of the dish in English. That section isfollowed by a chapter titled "Foods & Flavors"--listing theforeign terms for foods, spices, kitchen utensils and cooking techniques, with an English translation/description. These books are well researched, accurate and very informative. Highly recommended.--Sharon Hudgins, editor, Chile Pepper magazine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Anyone interested in Turkey
My husband and I found this book invaluable preparing for and during our recent trip to Turkey. The historical and cultural perspective provided by this book increased our enjoyment of this extraordinary country. The author's detailed overview of Turkey, past and present, gives the reader first hand knowledge that would be difficult to obtain elsewhere. The book includes many special discoveries (eg.small towns off the beaten track but near often over crowded tourist destinations to capture the essence of the warm and welcoming people). In addition, Serif Yenen is a highly regarded guide of his country (for 18 years), leads an organiztion of 1100 licensed guides, and writes a weekly column for a Turkish newspaper.I also recommend the CD - it's very useful and easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Without This Book
I join the other reviewers in STRONGLY recommending this book which I bought on my recent trip to Turkey.I don't remember coming up in my search for books on Turkey before we left although I confess I was searching Barnes and Noble and not Amazon. Our tour guide is one of the contributors, so I was a little reticent when he recommended it.I'm so glad I got the book as it is as much a souvenir as it was helpful while we were there. The history Mr. Yenen (who I met in Cappadocia) gives was more than adequate for a casual tourist. This is in contrast to a couple of the books I bought in which I got lost.It is SO much more than a guide book -- it may be a little short on recent historical issues, but it more than makes up for with its key words and phrases in Turkish, its historical information, and its cultural information.BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars İnvaluable Travel Gu
i am in Turkey, ending a tour of this fascinating country. i had the great, good fortune of having Serif Yenen as my tour director, which i was unaware of beforehand. i brought two travel guides with me from the U.S., but this was not one of them. When i found that our tour leader had written 'Turkish Odyssey', i immediately got a copy and used it exclusively on tour, never referring to the two i brought with me. The latter are fine if you are touring on your own and need hotel, car rental, restaurant info, etc., but 'TO' is a must if you are part of a guided tour. Most of the tour guides here use it. it answers questions tourists typically ask: education system healthcare, military service, politics, etc., besides extensive explanation and pictures of sites on the tour. Example: the guide i brought from home had two pages devoted to Ephesus, 'TO' has nineteen. if you are planning a trip to Turkey, which i highly recommend, drop a copy in your Amazon shopping cart. You will find it invaluable!

1-0 out of 5 stars do NOT buy....poorly thought out
    THE CD SUCKS:
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner
This CD is not for anyone who hasn't had previous experience with Czech.I find Czech rather challenging to pronounce, which is why I ordered a CD, but this one is not at all helpful. It gives very few basic words then takes off into long phrases that are impossible to repeat in the time given. Nothing is repeated. The speaker speaks quickly, which might be natural, but does nothing to help the student pick out individual words. Since I opened it I can't return it, but I'd like to.So, buyer of CDs beware.Once they're opened, you're stuck with them.

3-0 out of 5 stars The book alone won't help you much --
Swedish is fairly hard to pronounce, so I suggest getting a language instruction pack that includes a CD or cassette so you can hear the phrases as you read them. That said, you probably won't need to learn more than thank you, excuse me, hello, good-bye, and other pleasantries (although do learn them; they go a long way). Most Swedes learn English and speak it very well (save perhaps older folks who didn't go very far in school), and signs in tourist spots are often in both Swedish and English. This Berlitz travel pack is adequate for learning basic expressions and my Swedish friend gave the CD a thumbs up as far as pronunciation is concerned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gunaydin Istanbul!
Well written and chock full of what appears to be some very recent photographs. The book starts off with twenty-some pages of Turkish history including several pages devoted to Istanbul for women--governmentally secular, Turkey is nonetheless 90% Islam. The travel section contains critiques of dozens of hotels and even lists web sites and email addresses. A rarity even in current travel books. Web search engines tend to overwhelm the senses with too much data, so finding a source that actually evaluates hotels on an individual basis is a revelation. Likewise the section on dining, drinking and shopping covers a wide range of price choices with many recommendations that have the ring of authority to them. With 5,000 of years of history, Istanbul would require several lifetimes to investigate properly. Sightseeing is arranged in neighborhood fashion and gives the armchair traveler an opportunity to plot a variety of routes depending on time and inclination. The more you read, the more time you want to spend peeling back the layers of archeological wonder. Time Out includes almost 50 pages devoted to arts and entertainment and provides a comprehensive guide to adult night life in Istanbul. The factual style of writing lends an air of believability and authenticity. One of the off putting elements in the book is the inclusion of magazine style advertising throughout the text. And, the map section leaves a great deal to be desired. Ten pages at the back of the book split into areas of the city, without hotel indexes, and only identifying major streets. All in all, if you have only one guidebook for Istanbul, this is the one. There is a small section on Turkish language and vocabulary, and where to go to get instructions in Turkish. Covering virtually every aspect of the city the editors have created a concise yet detailed guide to what used to be Constantinople.

Covering virtually every aspect of the city the editors have created a concise yet detailed guide to what used to be Constantinople. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Tedious with Gratuitous Obscurity
I wanted to enjoy this book. The premise is interesting. The author is fascinated by Ibn Battutah and his travels. He sets off to follow in IB's footsteps. The author draws references from many bizarre sources presumably to help clarify or explain some of his experiences, but what it ends up being is gratuitous obscurity.I carefully sought out his references, but I did not feel rewarded.I noted with interest how often the author clarified that he was not married and did not wish to be and that he is not a Muslim and did not wish to be.These two issues arose many times.I was interested in the Eye of Joy and a couple of his jokes, but overall I felt the author was trying to impress the reader with his wide knowledge of obscurity rather than share an experience with his reader.

    Mr. Mackintosh-Smith can write!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the effort
If you are interested in the genre of travel writing where it merges with history then this book is worth the effort that it takes to read it. It takes a chapter, or two, to get used to the style of writing. Unlike so many other books of this type the editor has permitted the author to keep the quirks of style that allow the reader to acknowledge the presence of the individual rather than the blandness found in so many other books. As a result you gain an insight into the worlds of the author and IB. The fact that Mackintosh-Smith speaks fluent Arabic gives a depth to the book that is rare in similar works.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mellowest of Reflections
A most pleasant evening's read. Not really a book I would recommend to guide anyone planning a first trip to Turkey, as it is a bit too intellectual--i.e., reflective, and its greatest appeal will probably be to anyone already familiar with Turkey. However, maybe it is the kind of book that a first-time traveller to Turkey should read after having gone through the nuts and bolts travel guides.Sprinkled throughout are some wonderful word pictures, such as the description of the great Kangal dogs that actually brought a tear of recollection to my mind's eye--I was menaced and reduced to admiration more than once by these awesome creatures when I lived in Turkey.Settle's writing made me instantly feel I was right there with her.Her brief evocation of the panic-stricken French girl deep in one of the Cappadocian caves was heart wrenching.

3-0 out of 5 stars Turkey---It's More Than Just Ruins
Everyone who writes a book about their travels around the USA, or on life in some part of it, is not required to write sections on the genocide of the American Indians or on slavery. They MIGHT, but it's not how we need to judge the quality of the book.Similarly, books on Turkey do NOT have to have judgements or pronouncements about Armenians.Turkey is a lot more than that awful chapter in human history---and as we all know, there are a lot of awful chapters in almost every part of the world, especially if a major power is concerned. If foreign writers are going to discuss that particular series of events in Turkey's past, they should attempt to get their facts straight, or at least present both sides of the question and let readers decide.I believe this book could have let the whole issue drop.No matter what you think, it is true that modern Turks cannot be held responsible for what happened 90 or more years ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too nice
This might be interesting as a guide book if you're visiting some of the town in central Turkey , such as Sogut, Polarli and Kangal ( sorry for the spelling, Microsoft Word can't do those Turkish umlauts and I's without dots and g's with squiggles) that she talks about. They're off the beaten tourist track and I suspect that's with good reason. Settle finds them fascinating. She's evidently a nice person and a fine writer; that's her problem as a travel writer.
