1-0 out of 5 stars hard to get a good overview of a trip
This atlas shows very few states on a single spread, so you have to constantly flip between different pages when trying to plan a route. I found this very infuriating during a recent road trip in New England. It was always a hassle when we had to pull the map out because there was so much page turning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top
I am very happy with this Road Atlas. I am always looking streets, cities and the whole USA. Next Summer I will spend my vacation there and my Atlas will be a very good help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Made Road Atlas
I gave it 5 stars, but more accurately rate it at 4.6.It is a durably made booklet. It should last for many years, much because of the spiral binding and fairly thick, water resistant pages. It is easy to flip pages and the page you want stays open because of the spiral binding. My only negative comment is that although the state maps are detailed, they could be even more so; there is room on the pages for (more) county roads.Individual state maps provided for free at state welcome centers provide more details.Regardless, I'm glad that I bought it.It's a good value. When not on the road, it looks quite respectable on a book shelf. The more common staple-binding Rand McNally road atlas - now on sale as the year winds down - is a good supplement to throw in the trunk, but it is not nearly as durable. ... If you don't have gps, then this map book is for you. It is very easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Maps Ever!
The Vermont Atlas and Gazetteer (as well as the NH and Maine versions) are simply the best maps I have ever bought and used. Every road in every town is shown, and well as topographical features, landmarks, waterways, etc.
3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Atlas; Others May Be More Detailed
DeLorme has been establishing a name for themselves, having issued a set of road atlas and gazetteer books for each state, including this one for Vermont. Showing every back road in the state is rather impressive. Couple that with the amount of "gazetteer" information, such as landmarks, points of interest, museums, etc., it can be a very handy trip companion.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical Maybe, But Not an Atlas
I'll chime in with "catu11us" on this on most of the points raised in that review, but I have a few additional cautions for would-be buyers of this one.
1-0 out of 5 stars Where are the maps?
I won't repeat the criticisms of others. What did National Geographic think they were doing when they published a coffee-table history book under the title of "Atlas"?

1-0 out of 5 stars Historical it may be, this ain't no atlas.
This atlas hardly does National Geographic credit.Far better is Hammond's American history atlas, a slim 8 " x 11" paper- (cardboard-) bound edition.Better than either is the 1966 American Heritage atlas, a splendid maroon slipcased hardbound volume. It features superbly realized maps of all eras.Important wars - especially the Revolution and the Slaveholders' Rebellion ("Civil War") - are illustrated by clear maps as well as panoramic representations of major battles. The mapsare accompanied by brief informative texts, rather an innovation for the time. This first-rate production (The American Heritage Pictorial Atlas of United States History) isn't easy to find nowadays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Although obviously intended for high school level, the text presents a great deal of fascinating historical information on the medeival Islamic world (even including the Bulgars, the Timurids, etc.), often rare to find elsewhere; it marks the inadequacy of Islamic studies in English that there are few scholarly books on Islamic history with the same breadth of scope. Although some statements concerning earlier Islamic history run counter to orthodox Muslim belief, the author is undoubtedly one of the best writers of Muslim history. The pictures and maps are also great.

4-0 out of 5 stars lovely and impressive
Being a scholar of comparative religion but feeling lacking in my understanding of the general progress of Islam as a cultural (vice religious) phenomenon, I searched far and wide for a work on Islam akin to those of the Cultural Atlases series. Nicolle's work answered the mail admirably. The work is exceptionally well composed, indicative of a pleasing format and supporting browsing as well as research. Though the work cannot be called profound, factual information of considerable depth is nevertheless available to the targeted searcher. The book is admittedly weak on the theological underpinnings of the religion, though it nowhere claims to be an exploration of Islam as a religion per se: for such information, may I recommend Michael Jordan's handsome "Islam: An Illustrated History" (London: Carlton, 2002). I flatly disagree with those who claim that Ruthven's work is superior to Nicolle's: indeed, I found the former to be boring; superficial in its rigid obedience of the two-to-four-pages rule for every article; and, one might say, helter-skelter in its overall organization. While spelling errors in Nicolle (e.g., proselatize for proselytize) and typographical errors do not impress me, I shouldn't be too harsh, given that modern typesetting and typography for the consumption of the demanding twenty-first-century reader present such formidable challenges. (That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that probably deals with some intractable element of depth, justify my withholding of the fifth rating star.) Well done, Dr. Nicolle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of illustrated history
This book is overflowing with beautiful maps, fascinating photos and insightful descriptions. I find Nicolle's Historical Atlas of the Islamic World to be one of the best introductions to the history of the Muslim world. The layout is astounding, and puts much pricier atlases, even the Oxford Atlas of World History, to shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Arizona Topo map
We needed to locate some undeveloped property in the Show Low Pines area. This map and the internet were great in assisting us.We use our Colorado and Wyoming ones all the time. They are a great resource for people who like to do beyond the end of the road!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT map for exploring Arizona
I used this map when exploring Arizona on two separate occasions.Delorme makes these maps for nearly all states in the US.If you're ever going to explore a state - USE THIS MAP by Delorme. It's well organized, provides information on parks, unique spots like waterfalls, historical sites, etc.You can also find obscure roads not normally seen on tourist maps.I bought the Delorme maps for Colorado, New York, and Virginia as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars REVISED EDITION IS EVEN BETTER
Jack Purcell is pretty thorough in his review. As for the nitpickers, if they really want to get names and numbers of backroads, they can contact the forest service and BLM, as well as the park service, who publishes maps of logging roads, and other limited use roadways. At 1:250,000, who could expect a name or number tag anyway of off-the-beaten trail access roads anyway?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THE cohesive survey of the civil war featuring outstanding cartography
this book is the best compilation of maps relating to the 19th cent US military engagements--in terms of erudition, exhaustive thouroughness in handling specific battles, excellent cartography, and clarity
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Home Library Addition
Map draftsmanship is outstanding. The time sequences are helpful in understanding battle developments. I use the civil war maps to chart movements of my ancestors units and this work has proved invaluble. Coupled with regimental histories, contemporary photographs, and official records, the atlas helps provide the detail in piecing together events that affected the lives of many americans.2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting maps with text to be used very carefully
The atlas has good maps for much, but not all, of its intended purpose. But the REAL drawback is the text. Many mistakes penned by John Elting---especially serious ones concerning various Civil War aspects---plague the text.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scale
It would be good if Amazon reviewers of maps and atlases used the standard definitions for "large-scale" and "small-scale."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal
I love this map. I always take it with me when I go anywhere in Colorado. The scale is small enough so that you can see all the little back roads, and it's pretty easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for travel in remote areas
You should receive the sixth edition (2002) of the DeLorme Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer when you order from Amazon, even though Amazon's listing still shows only the fifth edition (2000). The atlas is indispensable if you're planning to travel on the back roads or the major Forest Service or BLM roads of Colorado. Governmental jurisdictions are well-differentiated by color, and the topographic relief is very nice.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
At first I was impressed by the maps and graphics in this book. As I began to study the battles I am particularly interested in I was suprised to find several gross errors. For example, the section on General Steele's Camden Expedition, has the map showing Thayer's Frontier Division meeting up with Steele at Elkin's Ferry via Murfreesboro, AR. The Map did not get even close to the correct route. Thayer came down via Hot Springs and Rockport and then followed Steele's armysouth until he caught up with Steele near Elkins Ferry. But I am amazed that the the map shows the Battle of Poison Springs on April 18, 1864 at Princeton which is 30+ miles northeast of Camden. Poison Springs is about 10+ miles West of Camden. I have to wonder who the heck researched this information and how could they be so far off????!!! It brings the creditability of this book into serious question!!!

This book is super in so many ways - but the best is its use of
3-0 out of 5 stars A slipshod production
Yes, this book contains the good things mentioned in the editorial and other reviews:broader coverage than just the campaigns, excellent introductions by James MacPherson, and many maps. However, in just a few hours perusing the book, I have found a multitude of errors and anomalies which suggest to me a lack of care in putting the book together, something I would not expect from a book bearing the Oxford imprint. Some of these are:

3-0 out of 5 stars Vegas Changes Almost Daily
This book is good for my intended purpose of seeing what to expect on my planned road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. However the information on Las Vegas is noticeably dated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Nevada atlas in every way :))
I have lived in Nevada and have traveled extensively throughout its rural areas since the 1980's. Most people don't realize how many "roads" there are in Nevada (1000's) that exist solely as remnants from mining booms, power line access development, ranching, military, and the like. The majority of unpaved roads shown on other atlases are not maintained by the counties they are in.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for getting there

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearest foldable map of downtown Seattle!
Before heading into Seattle as an intern this summer, I bought a few foldable maps - each with different strengths and weaknesses.By the end of the summer, the only map living in the front seat of my MINI Cooper was this one.I love it because the streets are clearly labeled.I love it because it shows some of the surrounding neighborhoods, not just the main downtown area. And most of all, I love it because it shows the on and offramps for the freeway. How many times have you hit a bizarre interchange and not known what lane to be in, or been stuck in a maze of one-way streets? This map is absolutely the clearest at indicating directionality of streets, and that's a good thing because Seattle is a pretty messy city to get around in by car.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Style OK But Not Great
I have been a huge fan of DeLorme State Atlas and Gazetteer books for 20+ years. I will never plan a trip without one. I find them absolutely indispensable and have them with me on any car trip, period. I do however have a preference for the older style of mapping used on the earlier editions. I used to own an old Utah Atlas and Gazetteer and much preferred it to the new one. The enhanced topo information and colorations are neat but the actual road mappings have a new style that are annoying to me. It is much harder with longer dashed lines for unimproved roads to determine whether the road intersects another one. Anyone who does backroading in Utah knows that when a road is near another on the map does not mean they intersect. One road could be 1000 feet below another and both will dead-end. It is not fun to plan a trip not being sure whether your road goes through. Although I still like the maps, I feel the need to have another topo source for backroads. I wish DeLorme would update their Atlas and Gazeteers in the old format rather than the 'slick' newer style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona... Great places for these
I have several of these of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Duplicates of each... one in the house for planning and study, one in the truck. Occasionally I rotate them so they don't wear out too quickly.I gave Delorme top billing in my Desert Emergency Survival Basics book, but you don't need a desert and you don't need an emergency to need a delorme atlas.Any rural area in the United States is probably covered by them.5-0 out of 5 stars A Necesity for exploring Back Country Utah by Car
There are a lot of dirt roads that cover the BLM and National Forests of Utah, and this book has them.It doesn't replace hiking maps, but if you have a 4wd or high clearance vehical and want to explore Utah on dirt roads, this is for you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!Don't go to NYC without this!
I picked this map up on my second day in NYC because it is small (essentially a piece of paper folded in half), lamenated, and had the subway stops/connections along with the streets.Wow, was it worth the money!I walked/took the subway over 4 days and hit every neighborhood all because of the ease of this map."Study" it while on the train so you are prepared at your next stop. This map along with a multiday subway pass is all you need to have freedom to explore NYC with confidence and speed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Levels!
These levels are all the reviews and manufacturer say they are.We do finish work and cabinet installation and the 4' level is what we were really after. The 16" level was just included in the package, but, after receiving and using it I love it!It is great for installing the ribs and shelving in closets and for close quarters. The 4' is perfect for hanging doors and cabinets. Both are lightweight, easy to handle, and very accurate.I recommend these highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The nonpareil of portable Manhattan maps
To the user whose StreetWise map didn't show the Chrysler Building:You'll be pleased to know that the Chrysler has been added to the latest addition!
