5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for using maps, compass & GPS effectively!
The second edition of Land Navigation Handbook (2005) is the best book I have read on the subject of navigation. The explanations andexpert guidance on choosing and using a compass, the distinction between magnetic and true north, choosing and using a GPS unit, how GPS works and its limitations (not just for north America but for other parts of the world as well) are definitely worth reading.I have learned a lot from this book. The book is not for land navigation only, it is also an indispensable aid for marine navigation.I sincerely think every sailor should have one in his sailboat (it measures only 8" x 4.5" x 0.5") as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vastly improved! The new standard for navigation books.
The new edition brings this classic book up to date with digital mapping and GPS technology. It retains much of the content and flavor of the original text yet adds a great deal of material that is helpful today. This handbook teaches the basics of map, compass, and GPS with clear langauage while offering advanced outdoors folks detailed information and tips (there's even information for adventure racers, geocachers, and sea kayakers). The new info, illustrations, and photos make this the best navigation book on the market for anyone who plays in the outdoors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated and Outdated
It's beyond me why people recommend this book for first-time backcountry hikers who want to learn how to read a map and use a compass.Even the old time-encrusted 'Be Expert With Map and Compass' book is easier to use, and that's saying something!

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook
As I lived in St. Paul for over 20 years, I found the book very interesting and informative. I first read about familar streets and then found myself reading the book front to back. The pictures also really helped bring the story of each street to life.Every city should do all it can to promote it's history; the street names and stories behind them is a great place to start. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What exactly does the San Fernando Valley look like from the air?
While visiting family in Encino, a portion of Los Angeles, I was curious to know what exactly the San Fernando Valley looked like in relation to the rest of L.A.A trip to the Encino Library left me only partially satisfied. But, by purchasing the Southern & Central California Atlas and Gazetteer, I finally understood the boundaries of the valley, the configuration of the mountains separating the two major portions of L.A., and the logic of travelling "West" to Encino from the rest of L.A. on the 101 without falling into the Pacific Ocean. This is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about the geologic and geocultural configuration of the southern half of California.Should I find an equal curiosity about the northern half of the state, I'll be sure to buy the companion volume. And some day, I'll even donate my copy to the Encino Public Library (which is a great place, by the way; they just didn't have this terrific atlas).

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a standard road guide
This is not the book you want to take with you if you are navigating the CA freeways or surface streets.I use it solely for backwoods trips into the Sequoias and the Kern Valley, and even then, it can be a little frustrating to a novice.I use AAA maps as a first resort, and this as my second (last) resort.
2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, I guess
Well, I have never been too impressed with this atlas. I fell in love with the beautiful Benchmark & rarely look back. The dirt roads in Delorme look like hiking trails, the book splits California into 2 sections, paper is weak quality. It will do in a pinch, but I would rather have my 'REAL map book'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only guide to Wyomingyou'll need
I shall be visiting Wyoming later this year, and this book (and its accompanying website) has proved to be invaluable in planning my trip. Everything you'll ever need to know about the state is here - maps, accommodation, restaurants, shopping and much more. I particularly like the detailed histories of the various Wyoming towns that are included - not something that you'll find in the usual guide books.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Travel Guide
This book has all the information you could possibly need if you were travelling to Wyoming and my husband is thrilled we bought it.The maps inside are great, but since we prefer the larger ones, we will get them for free from the Wyoming visitor's bureau. If you're travelling to Wyoming, this is a definite must have and a one-stop source for all your information and travel needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars ultimate wyoming atlas and travel encyclopedia
This book does have a lot of information.I was hoping to find out what each town was like today, not back in the 1800's.I was interested in finding out what each town offered as far as shopping, schools, hospitals, etc...Instead it is more of a history lesson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars trans Siberian Handbook
Have just finished the trip - this guide is fantastic the trip would have been a lot less without it.Every one around us borrowed it

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for Trans-Siberian travelers
I have used this book multiple times while traveling the Trans-Siberian.During my first trip, it helped me to get my bearings and to plan the practicalities. On subsequent trips, I was able to enjoy the detailed maps and information about stops along the way.It is very accurate and detailed.I still found a previous version useful several years after publication. It does focus primarily on stops directly on the route. For those who with to travel further afield, I wrote the book ROAMING RUSSIA: An Adventurer's Guide to Off The Beaten Track Russia and Siberia. The Trans-Siberian Handbook is an essential book for Siberian rail travelers.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful
I found this book to be of great help in planning my Trans-Siberian trip.It is organized and contains information that will definitely be indispensible along the way: basic translations of common terms, general info on departure cities other than Russia and things I would never think of adding to a travel guidebook.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing errors in my copy
When I received my copy of the Gazetteer I found 4 pages missing and 4 other pages duplicated. I ordered two other Gazetteers for Wyoming and Idaho at the same time and they were OK but since I discovered the problem while on our trip, the Gazetteer I purchased for Montana was effectively useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Detail for All Kinds of Readers
This atlas, like all the Delorme atlases of the states, shows in clear detail every possible feature of the areas: roads down to dirt paths, rivers and streams, railroads, and the contours and elevations of the land.Placenames are thoroughly listed, as are parks, campgrounds, and recreation sites for hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking. This is an excellent all-around reference work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
They tried to squeeze too big of a state into too small of a book. Detail is not on par with other atlases in this series. Should have been divided into an east and west set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull
I found what I was looking for. I love the presentation of the maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource and the timeline is accurate, but you need to look closely at it.
Having read one review here that indicated that this book made the all to common mistake repeated again and again in bibical timelines of puting the Great Flood around 2500 BC which is after at least 600 years of known Pharaohs in Egypt I decided to check the timeline in the Atlas out for myself.
2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Widdle Riddle....
This book is nothing more than a secularist's timeline and take on history wrapped with a cover that says "Bible" on it. The question is by whose Bible is he using to setup his historical framework? Ironically it isn't the Holman Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mountains, rivers, creeks and streams
I bought this West Virginia Map and Gazetteer in order to help my husband and I find our way through WV. We're most interested in the topography - elevations, rivers, creeks, etc. I would recommend using this book map in conjunction with a regular road map, because there isn't quite enough detail for smaller roads, but it's a great place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Equipment for Motorcyclists
I bought the Atlas and Gazetter for WV and MD.These books are essential equipment for getting out and enjoying the back roads. The topo info tells you if it will be flat and sunny or hilly and shady.I am really impressed with the detail of the maps.If they could make it in a water proof edition it would be perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not a map, it;s a travel agent
Streetwise Sydney is essential to experiencing a city rich in history. It is laminated, so it's easy to fold, and it fits almost anywhere - a breast pocket perhaps. The map color codes different points of interest and ofnecessity- i.e. the Royal Botanic Gardens, Restaurants and Hotels.Thismap made a trip to a foreign city not so intimidating, and I wouldn't wantto use any other kind when I plan my next adventure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave for London without this!
I recently returned from 5 days in London - no tour group, no guides, and no prior knowledge of the city. Not wanting to carry around a large guidebook, I took this mapguide with me each day.It was absolutely essential!Everything from restaurants to tube stops is well-labeled and easy to decipher. It fit right into the side pocket of my small, over the shoulder purse and was easily tucked away when I didn't need it.I love to "get lost" in the small side streets and when I did need to find my way back to the main roads, it was simple to see where I was.Quite frankly, this was as essential to my trip as my passport!Don't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The London Mapguide: 4th Edition
Excellent choice for our first trip to Central London.I pondered over ordering the A-Z guide that was recommended...or this one. This choice was better for me.It is a good guide to the tourist areas of London and the best plus is that the map is fairly easy to read...it has the largest print of most guide books I've seen! Some of the other maps type was just too small to read. This book is very compact, as well, which made it easy to store in my purse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the London Mapguide
The London Mapguide is the one map I always bring with me to London.Certainly the A to Zed is more comprehensive - but also much more difficult to read when you're on the go.The Mapguide has all the streets, attractions, and points of interest the London traveller could want plus useful info like post offices, tube stations, bus routes, some common shops and hotels. It's not too big to lug around, easy to read, and even has a page on the outlying village of Hampstead.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars guatemala map
great map. Since I purchased it for a collage project, I just wished it were all on one side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Map
This map was very helpful in getting me throughout Belize (northern Belize is cut off on the map because of the map key), Guatemala, and part of Honduras (it covers the northern part from Copan to the coast). The map was very accurate when it came to the roads and showing whether the road was paved or unpaved. The only problem I had was finding a hot springs in southern Belize that was listed as a point on interest on the map. When I got there it was a really nasty pond that wasn't taken care of.Other than that the map was excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Guatemala country map available
We travel to Guatemala several times a year, and this map is my constant companion. I've looked at everything else which is available, and the ITMB map of Guatemala is head and shoulders above any other country map I've seen. It embodies the goal of cartographers to include lots of information and yet remain easy to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Texas Atlas by Delorme
The atlas has good detail with mapping, however the quality of the material or workmanship is very bad. I modrately used the book two weeks and entire pages came out of the book. The paper is breaking at the binding on several pages. I DO NOT recommend this product

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Atlas and Gazetteer
I have been through several of these. I use them until they fall apart and then get another. I purchased another brand after my last one fell apart. Used it once and did'nt like it. This is the best Texas Atlas made. The blowups and details of the metro areas make it particularly valueable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills a niche for travellers needing more detail on statewide scale
This is a very useful atlas if you want a general reference to find your way around on state and county roads across the state. The scale and topography shown are helpful in finding a destination, but there is no way to show enough labels at this level, so while county roads are shown, they are not labelled.Since it covers the whole state it lacks the level of detail required for some areas, particularly densely populated ones that don't have detail maps included. For those you are better off using city maps, or online sources such as USGS topos or web based maps to drill down.(It should also be possible to find more detailed county maps locally.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent map for NYC
I have had all the editions of this map.It is a great resource for NYC.I even use their recommendations for restaurants. The only minor complaint I have is about the Brooklyn and Queens maps. These are very superficial and cannot be used to get around these burroughs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flashmaps-Great for the city!
Two crucial tips for NYC: have great maps and pack lightly.Flashmaps allows you to do both! This small book can be pulled out quickly and referenced without having to unfold a huge map.Multiple maps for subways and buses and shopping aren't needed because everything is contained in this booklet. It can be stashed in a coat pocket or small bag.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for navigating Manhattan
So far I've owned 3 versions of the Fodor's Flashmaps and I've never been disappointed. I first bought a Fodor's Flashmaps book several years ago to assist me in finding my way around Manhattan. The maps are easy to read and arranged by several categories (such as Restaurants/Midtown, Restaurants/Upper West Side, /The Village, and so on), so you can easily find hotels, restaurants, museums, art galleries, architecture, churches/temples/mosques, consulates, universities, hospitals, libraries, tourist attractions, shopping, and theaters in the area you plan to be, and map your route to get there. It also includes maps and guides on the subway system, buses, driving, parking, rail, and getting to/from the airport, and provides an avenue and street finder for Manhattan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisconsin Atlas
Once again DeLorme has put together an extremely valuable resource.Backroads, lakes, trails, all seem to be accounted for.I spend nearly all of my time in Burnett County and could not find anything missing or incorrectly labeled.1-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Travel?
The cover lists "Everyday Travel." Common sense and experience with other atlases led me to believe I would see cities mapped as well as parks, lakes and swamps.NOT SO.I was better-off squinting at Mapquest.com.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but missing information.
First of all I absolutely love this atlas!! I look at it all the time. Its great for taking a trip through the state because it doesn't leave out a detail (or so it seems until you look harder). It features parks, forests, tourist attractions, natural features, fishing spots and more... The ONLY reason that I give this otherwise 5+ star atlas four stars, is that it has a good amount of missing information. I own the 1989 edition of this book and recently looked at the newest edition (2001) to find that there was NO added information from the old edition. I couldn't find a single difference between the two versions. The problem is, there is probably a couple DOZEN roads within 10 miles of my home that are not listed! I've also found one of their phone numbers for a state park to be the wrong one.Well, they do say to contact them "if you should find conditions other than what is listed in this atlas". So that's what I'll do and I hope to help other people by stepping in and making the right changes. (The changes will be listed in the next edition).Read more
