5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Almost Great
This book includes many really nice maps of early New York.Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information.Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow.Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations.A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of History and Culture
Professor Barnavi has done a great service both to Judaism and any students who are inclined to further their understanding of it. As a Christian proponent of this ancient faith upon which our own is based, I have found it an invaluable resource in my ecumenical studies involving history and development of Ancient and Modern Jewry and the vast knowledge accumulated over the thousands of years of its existance. It is a concise coverage of every age of its progression, along with a magnificent garnish of photographs and illustations which bring the entire process to life. I highly reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavily researched, beautifully depicted, fascinating and encyclopedic
This gorgeous coffee-table sized book would alone get my five stars for its detailed but clear maps and its breathtakingly diverse array offigures and illustrations depicting the major events of over 3,000 years of Jewish history. As it is, it provides detailed, well researched and very readable historical synopses of Jewish life throughout the world over this period, with each folio (two facing pages) a separate topic. Each folio includes the historical synopsis, usually a map, a series of other illustrations, including photographs, art, and other figures, and at the bottom of every page appears a time line highlighting important dates relevant to the topic. The topics range from the dawn of Judaism to present-day issues in Judaism, from Chinese Jews to the Jews of King Solomon's era, to Jewish farmers in Eastern Europe. You need to see this book in its entirety to believe it.If you ever wanted to an excellent and fascinating introduction to Jewish history, I don't think you can get better than this rare, colorful, scholarly and very engaging book.I'm so enthusiastic about it, I've bought it as a gift three times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, informative and beautiful work
This presentation of the history of the Jewish people through text, maps, charts, drawings, photographs, etc. is beautifully done.It is an excellent reference work for readers of all ages, a beautiful 'coffee table' book and a pleasure to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive
This atlas is very comprehensive and contains colour maps showing the religious composition of the various regions of the United States from the pre-colonial days down to the present. 5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a focus on the history and geographic development
Brett Carroll's Historical Atlas of Religion in America provides a focus on the history and geographic development of American religions, providing maps and visual details to bring alive the connections between American political and religious history. From parts played by religious groups of Europe to the development of sects in the country, this provided a well-rounded survey. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible mistake in regards to PERSIAN GOLF ****************
What the hell is going on... I wonder wich rich royal family in the mid-east has funded this unbeleivable mistake!!!
1-0 out of 5 stars Historical information in this book was manipulated
In this book, unfortunately due to powerful anti-Iranian (Persian) activities and the typical incompetence of the Islamic Republic that occupies Iran, the southern states of the Persian Gulf who have only come to existence thanks to foreign powers, have slowly become more brazen. As a result the National Geographic Society has printed at least three major erroneous statements in its Atlas of the World 2005 (Eighth Edition, ISBN: 0-7922-7543-8 & ISBN: 0-7922-7542-x) regarding Iran and the Persian Gulf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much improved, a few flaws
I had an edition of this atlas that was published in 1965, but was still on sale until recently. As an avid reader of history of all periods, I consulted this atlas quite frequently. The new 2005 edition is much welcome. Many of the maps are identical to those in the older edition, but much has been added. In general, the new edition is less Eurocentric, containing new maps of African, South American and Asian polities. A notable omission is any description of the breakup of the USSR. The map of WWII is not useful, and appears to have been put in as an afterthought. The map of the Vietnam War is good, but the Korean War map is very difficult to read. Very good new maps also include world distributions of languages, religions, income and literacy, as well as descriptions of political, military and econimic alliances. Overall, an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good teaching resource
This inexpensive atlas has proven to be a useful teaching resource, given the typically meagre historical and geographical understanding of undergraduate college students.Although coverage is necessarily selective, it hits the major events of the past (wars, empires), and includes a good level of material on the world outside of the US.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Although obviously intended for high school level, the text presents a great deal of fascinating historical information on the medeival Islamic world (even including the Bulgars, the Timurids, etc.), often rare to find elsewhere; it marks the inadequacy of Islamic studies in English that there are few scholarly books on Islamic history with the same breadth of scope. Although some statements concerning earlier Islamic history run counter to orthodox Muslim belief, the author is undoubtedly one of the best writers of Muslim history. The pictures and maps are also great.

4-0 out of 5 stars lovely and impressive
Being a scholar of comparative religion but feeling lacking in my understanding of the general progress of Islam as a cultural (vice religious) phenomenon, I searched far and wide for a work on Islam akin to those of the Cultural Atlases series. Nicolle's work answered the mail admirably. The work is exceptionally well composed, indicative of a pleasing format and supporting browsing as well as research. Though the work cannot be called profound, factual information of considerable depth is nevertheless available to the targeted searcher. The book is admittedly weak on the theological underpinnings of the religion, though it nowhere claims to be an exploration of Islam as a religion per se: for such information, may I recommend Michael Jordan's handsome "Islam: An Illustrated History" (London: Carlton, 2002). I flatly disagree with those who claim that Ruthven's work is superior to Nicolle's: indeed, I found the former to be boring; superficial in its rigid obedience of the two-to-four-pages rule for every article; and, one might say, helter-skelter in its overall organization. While spelling errors in Nicolle (e.g., proselatize for proselytize) and typographical errors do not impress me, I shouldn't be too harsh, given that modern typesetting and typography for the consumption of the demanding twenty-first-century reader present such formidable challenges. (That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that probably deals with some intractable element of depth, justify my withholding of the fifth rating star.) Well done, Dr. Nicolle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of illustrated history
This book is overflowing with beautiful maps, fascinating photos and insightful descriptions. I find Nicolle's Historical Atlas of the Islamic World to be one of the best introductions to the history of the Muslim world. The layout is astounding, and puts much pricier atlases, even the Oxford Atlas of World History, to shame.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
At first I was impressed by the maps and graphics in this book. As I began to study the battles I am particularly interested in I was suprised to find several gross errors. For example, the section on General Steele's Camden Expedition, has the map showing Thayer's Frontier Division meeting up with Steele at Elkin's Ferry via Murfreesboro, AR. The Map did not get even close to the correct route. Thayer came down via Hot Springs and Rockport and then followed Steele's armysouth until he caught up with Steele near Elkins Ferry. But I am amazed that the the map shows the Battle of Poison Springs on April 18, 1864 at Princeton which is 30+ miles northeast of Camden. Poison Springs is about 10+ miles West of Camden. I have to wonder who the heck researched this information and how could they be so far off????!!! It brings the creditability of this book into serious question!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A slipshod production
Yes, this book contains the good things mentioned in the editorial and other reviews:broader coverage than just the campaigns, excellent introductions by James MacPherson, and many maps. However, in just a few hours perusing the book, I have found a multitude of errors and anomalies which suggest to me a lack of care in putting the book together, something I would not expect from a book bearing the Oxford imprint. Some of these are:

3-0 out of 5 stars Atlas?
I've bought this atlas after reviewing all the options available on Amazon. This one was apparently the best one in terms of map quality and information available within; I have not seen any other atlas referenced by other reviewers so I will not make comparisons here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of World History
Information is current, colorfully presented, and illustrated in a fascinating manner. Most would be happy to own this highly informative piece of reference material.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books
As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull
I found what I was looking for. I love the presentation of the maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource and the timeline is accurate, but you need to look closely at it.
Having read one review here that indicated that this book made the all to common mistake repeated again and again in bibical timelines of puting the Great Flood around 2500 BC which is after at least 600 years of known Pharaohs in Egypt I decided to check the timeline in the Atlas out for myself.
2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Widdle Riddle....
This book is nothing more than a secularist's timeline and take on history wrapped with a cover that says "Bible" on it. The question is by whose Bible is he using to setup his historical framework? Ironically it isn't the Holman Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars i like it
This is great for browsing (if you like maps of different periods in history that is).It won't stand on it's own as a history textbook, but I don't imagine it was intended to.I like the fact that it is lightweight and portable...not so big and fat that it's hard to find the page you're looking for, or a place to store it.I think it would be a great supplement for people who are learning history, as well as for those who read a lot of things from or about various periods in history.I keep it on the coffee table and enjoy looking through it often.I'm giving it only 4 stars because I'd like to see a few more details and features on the maps.Still, this really is a great bargain of an atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Atlas that's an Atlas
Thank goodness I can still buy an atlas that is really an atlas. I read a lot of history, and having reached that stage in life where most of the books I enjoy are not profusely illustrated, I have been searching for a good historical atlas. I've bought several now, covering different periods and regions, but most have been a dissapointment (the lone exception being the Penguin Atlas of Medieval History). Instead of an atlas, i.e., a collection of maps, what I got was an illustrated history book. Unfortunately, to make room for the text, graphs, etc., they left out most of the maps. The maps that were included often ignored political boundaries, or tried to encapsulate 100 years of change on a single, low-detail map with a few arrows and dots drawn on. While I understand that history is much more than political and national boundaries, those are the aspects of history that change most rapidly, thus requiring more maps to follow. I remember the old Hammond Historical Atlas from my childhood, as the perfect companion for most books of post-Renaissance European history (and not bad for earlier periods, though usually weak outside Europe). I just hope it hasn't changed too much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bargain priced, but no text. Very basic.
First of all: this book is a bargain. At under ten bucks, you can get maps of world history to refer to.However, there are a few problems: (1) The book offers no text to explain history. So you really need to know the history yourself or have companion books to help; (2) the book emphasizes European state history, and shortchanges other nations, cultural changes, religious movements, migrations, slavery, technologies, etc. This is mostly a book of maps showing the changing territories of nations.////I was hoping to assign this book to my college Geography students, but will not, nor do I have much use for it myself.I much prefer the other Hammond world historical atlas, even at the higher cost. Most of the new, larger world historical atlasses are superior, becuase they show that history is so much more than states. In sum, this book is a disappointment, useful to a very limited audience. ... Matching clear graphics with informative text, Christopher Scarre's atlas gives a fine overview of Roman history from the emergence of the first city-state in the eighth century B.C. to the rise of Christian theocracy a millennium later. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but should have been bigger.
The atlas is not that large.I bought four similar atlases all from Penguin and they are all thin books (< 150 pages) and small in size (10" x 7").
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really an Atlas
I would like to second the comments of Jacques P. Talbot.I bought this book expecting an atlas, that is a book of maps. There are some maps in this book, but they are small and cluttered and I don't really find them useful. The book is mostly pictures and text.It reminds me of that Time-Life series, that is aimed at young people, although this book is not as good as any in that series. The publishers must have changed their mind about what they wanted to do with this book. They should not have put the word "Atlas" on this confused mess.It might be OK as an introduction for people about 14-16 years old, but if you want an atlas with useful maps in it, don't buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the lay man
I think I found answers to all I've ever wanted to know about the Roman Empire. This book is certainly readable by anyone. If you don't like reading long texts, this book is perfect. If you do like longer texts, this book is also nice. The balance between pictures and texts is optimal in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic Maps - hurrah!
As an avid devourer of both history and maps I can say that this book fills a certain niche within my appetite that has not been addressed by either thick historical reference materials or other historical atlases.
5-0 out of 5 stars History as it should be enjoyed
I defy any other historian to compress so much raw material into such a concise but precise volume. The language is a pure joy: Caesar's son being "tidied away into a small box"; Nero "dying by his own shaky hand"; the "proud and prickly" Great Kings of Persia. The book (and others by the same author) is also refreshingly politically incorrect: unashamedly European in outlook, rightly contemptuous of less civilized polities, unafraid to defend the Indo-European conquest of Iran and Northern India.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Atlas I was hoping for
When you teach introductory courses in ancient history ranging from the first cities to the fall of Rome a good atlas that doesn't cost much is difficult to find: its still difficult to find.I like that the maps are organized by topic to a degree but I found a lot of the commentary to be more introductory history (simplistic at that) than atlas commentary.I liked that the maps themselves are simple gray scale and not all the colors that can get confusing when you deal with smaller nations and tribes but overall I think they lacked some detail.Given so much of the book is this simplified history it really needs a bibliography too. For $15, I think I can put up maps on our class overhead or computer which are as good and in many cases better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and comprehensive.
This is incredibly comprehensive coverage of the founding of the present state of Israel and as such, is unique. The correspondents have clearly got their fingers dirty, by digging down to the real issues behind the present state. I read this in conjunction with Richard Patton's incredible "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years".Having been brought up in a largely Christian culture, Patton's book about the man we call Jesus was wonderfully enhanced by the political background provided by Brinkley et al. This book should be read by anyone interested in thetroubled Middle East. It is a work that will stand long after its authors have shuffled off their mortal coil! Highly recommended. ... Read more
