5-0 out of 5 stars The best Atlas I have ever saw on Alaska
Complete, detailed, with all information you may need. A must and in a large format. If you plan to travel to Alaska by any means, do not miss this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point for Planning
The sheer size of Alaska tends to defeat what would otherwise be an unbeatable map collection for most states in the lower 48.A second challenge is the very thin transportation infrastructure in Alaska; huge areas of the state are not on the limited road network and can be reached in a timely manner only by air.Enormous swaths of wilderness have no transportation network at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-buy for those driving in Alaska
This atlas is a tremendous fount of information for those travelling Alaska or even just interested. It even has GPS coordinates! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THE cohesive survey of the civil war featuring outstanding cartography
this book is the best compilation of maps relating to the 19th cent US military engagements--in terms of erudition, exhaustive thouroughness in handling specific battles, excellent cartography, and clarity
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Home Library Addition
Map draftsmanship is outstanding. The time sequences are helpful in understanding battle developments. I use the civil war maps to chart movements of my ancestors units and this work has proved invaluble. Coupled with regimental histories, contemporary photographs, and official records, the atlas helps provide the detail in piecing together events that affected the lives of many americans.2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting maps with text to be used very carefully
The atlas has good maps for much, but not all, of its intended purpose. But the REAL drawback is the text. Many mistakes penned by John Elting---especially serious ones concerning various Civil War aspects---plague the text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Tourists too
I first picked up the NFT guide for New York City in May of 2006 when I was looking for a tourbook for a long weekend trip I had planned. I now have the Chicago and Boston books as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book.
This guidebook's title is right on: it's not for tourists. It's for those of us who are moving to Boston and need good maps, information on T-stops and bus lines (very helpful, as no other guidebook I've seen shows bus lines), restaurants, bars, etc.We don't need information on fancy hotels and the Freedom Trail- for that, a different guidebook might do.But this is the one worth buying and keeping tucked in your purse or bag when you're out and about in the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little book
I bought this book shortly before my husband and I moved north of Boston. It has been a fantastic resource for our travels into the city. This is the only book you need to bring with you to Boston. No big, bulky map is necessary. It shows how to easily navigate the public transportation system and specific instructions on how to arrive at your destination. It is written in an unbiased, straightforward and sometimes humorous fashion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Virginia Atlas & Gazetteer - Tons of content
This Atlas, like all in the DeLorme series of Atlas & Gazetteer references, are wonderful map resources.A wealth of information is included. If anything, the level of detail, coupled with the topographic information, may seem a bit too much at first glace (if you are new to these guides). But if you're willing to spend a bit of time with the maps, you will find these guides to be very useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer, 4th ed
Like all Gazetteers by DeLorme, the Virginia version is excellent. The accuracy is commendable, although I do have several minor suggestions for the immediate area where I grew up.They are things that no one would know other than one who had lived there for a period of time. The Gazetteers are amazingly interesting and useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars The 2004 edition STILL suffers inaccuracies
I attended college in Nevada and volunteered for the BLM in Nevada. I have traveled extensively throughout the state's rural areas since the 1980's; and several times over.
3-0 out of 5 stars May mislead the unwary
The DeLorme Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer is useful if you're planning to travel off of Nevada's main highways. But there's a notable flaw that I hope DeLorme will correct in future printings. The atlas shows many spots, represented by a black diamond as a "City or Town" according to the key on the inside front cover, that are no such thing. Some of those places are deserted. Others may have a house or two but no services. You may run out of gas if you rely solely on this atlas.4-0 out of 5 stars Great trip planning tool
I use the Delorme Gazetteers, including this one, for planning my fishing trips every year. They include comprehensive coverage of the state in question with sufficient detail to identify all the major topological features one will find, including streams and lakes. Also, they show all the roads. One criticism is that they don't contain road mileages between locations, unlike a highway atlas. But, a highway atlas will not show topographic coutour lines, or indicate locations where one may launch kayaks or rafts, or show locations reputed to have good fishing.I keep a Delorme Gazetteer for each state in which I expect to travel on any extended drive. They enable me to find campgrounds (in the indexes and shown on the maps), roads, topography, and all the essentials to plan a trip. ... I highly recommend this atlas book. It has large maps, easy to use symbols, it loaded with colors and highly useful and interesting information. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wisconsin Atlas
Once again DeLorme has put together an extremely valuable resource.Backroads, lakes, trails, all seem to be accounted for.I spend nearly all of my time in Burnett County and could not find anything missing or incorrectly labeled.1-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Travel?
The cover lists "Everyday Travel." Common sense and experience with other atlases led me to believe I would see cities mapped as well as parks, lakes and swamps.NOT SO.I was better-off squinting at Mapquest.com.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but missing information.
First of all I absolutely love this atlas!! I look at it all the time. Its great for taking a trip through the state because it doesn't leave out a detail (or so it seems until you look harder). It features parks, forests, tourist attractions, natural features, fishing spots and more... The ONLY reason that I give this otherwise 5+ star atlas four stars, is that it has a good amount of missing information. I own the 1989 edition of this book and recently looked at the newest edition (2001) to find that there was NO added information from the old edition. I couldn't find a single difference between the two versions. The problem is, there is probably a couple DOZEN roads within 10 miles of my home that are not listed! I've also found one of their phone numbers for a state park to be the wrong one.Well, they do say to contact them "if you should find conditions other than what is listed in this atlas". So that's what I'll do and I hope to help other people by stepping in and making the right changes. (The changes will be listed in the next edition).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars delorme gazetteer series
the delorme gazeteer series is perfect for people who want to wander off of the main roads.my wife and i like to point the car as whim sees fit.the map has backroads with enought detail to let us find our wish and our way back.essential for indirect travel.also has marked 4wd trails to unknown wonders, as well as a smattering of known wonders (waterfalls, museums, fishing, camping...).not a replacement for usgs quads, but will make the travel to your hike more fun.if you are interested in exploring a state, or some portion thereof, the gazetteer series is an invaluable tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michigan Atlas and Gazetteer
We previously owned the Minnesota version of this Atlas.Recently we bought the Michigan version and found it very helpful on a trip to the UP of Michigan. The great detail in the maps helps find the small things the state maps leave out.

5-0 out of 5 stars gazateer review
At over a three month wait, this was a very delayed delivery. In fact I have a second order that I placed May 4, 2005, that has still not been delivered.I really feel that you shouldn't advertise items that you don't have available and can't deliver, stating one delivery date, then another, now a third delivery window.I'm glad we received the 1 book, but am still waiting for 3 others. It's been over three months now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Map
This is a good, clear map which is easy to read. The vinyl cover is a definite plus.It helps keep the map clean and notes can be tucked inside it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Road Atlas
Rand McNally is a consistantly good road atlas. The 2006 issue was very helpful in planning my recent trip.It doesn't replace the on-line maps or city atlases that show every street, turn, and such, but when you run into a temporary interstate closure, it answers the question of what is my best option now.

5-0 out of 5 stars As easy as it gets
Ever since my first trip to NYC in 1989, I have relied on having a -no more than 2-3 years old- copy of Rand McNally in our rented car.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great vacation planning tool

3-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
Good points: This atlas is the most available and easy to use topographical atlas on the market. It has helped me get into many off-highway areas with great experiences. The roadnames are particularly useful, as these are not on USGS topo maps.Road condition classification also seems to be more accurate than the outdated USGS quads. Bad points: DeLorme gives a false sense of accuracy. On the reverse side of the front cover they advise to measure distance in tenths of miles. No one should pretend to be this accurate at the scale they use. They do explain that the distance will be "slightly" more than measured. On windy roads this could be up to one more mile for every three. My biggest disappointment with the Idaho atlas came after I looked at DeLorme's atlases for Washington and Oregon. Although I have never used them for off-highway travel, it is plain to see that they are better scale, better detail, and there are more features and attractions shown. All the Idaho atlas is is an updated copy of the USGS 1:250K topo maps.Is Idaho not popular enough or what?

2-0 out of 5 stars So many errors!
I made the terrible mistake of touring Idaho with an old (1994) edition of the DeLorme Idaho Atlas. Fortunately I had a whole sackful of BLM and Forest Service maps to get me out of tight situations caused by relying onDeLorme's information. The atlas shows roads that are not there, and doesnot show roads that are there. The land management boundaries are incorrectin many crucial instances, and sites are drastically misplaced.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading or incorrect information in reference book
It's disturbing to see how many mistakes I found just browsing through this colorful, attractive book.Though the state bird of Alabama is known locally as "yellowhammer," you will not find that name in any field guide! The accompanying picture was no help either in identifying what turned out to be the Common Flicker. Other state birds were listed by uncommon, incorrect, misleading names too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes for an attractive, appealing presentation
The State-By-State Atlas is organized by region and features information about each state's landscape, industry, agriculture, population and history, using digital color maps and photos to help emphasize geographic facts. The emphasis on color embellishments makes for an attractive, appealing presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neat book!
This is a great book, very informative and well organized...I just have one gripe...Pennsylvania is listed as the 32nd state, when actually it was the 2nd...Minnesota was also listed as the 32nd state, which was correct...call me anal but I'm teaching a class on the 50 states so I have to be accurate, and depend on my references to be accurate as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a CAR MUST-HAVE
I don't know what I would have done without this book in my car ALL THE TIME. There's nothing like being trapped in traffic and whipping out the book to find alternate routes - or when you need to fill up on gas, or looking for the other 24-hour fitness and there it is listed. I love the frank commentary of neighborhoods which are so accurate. And for the commentator below from Tucson who said he didn't care about where to get his car washed all over LA, when he moves here and realizes the great majority of LA needs to know where the closest car wash is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Guide to LA area
Like the flashmaps guides I remember from around 25 years ago.I don't live in LA but travel there regularly...If you are an occasional visitor and generally know where things are, the NFT book can be your only guide/map...If you live here you will have a Thomas Bros. map anyway.I have to travel to out-of-the way neighborhoods like Chatsworth on business so I appreciate the listings for Post Offices and Banks on each page. Also if you have some time to kill, the hiking, park and beach overviews are good enough for someone who visits occasionally to find something to do.One thing I don't like is there is no space to write on the side opposite the map your own finds in a neighborhood, what I ended up doing is using colored pens to color code spots on the map with the item, for example on Map 24 I put a red dot on Washington Blvd and wrote a note in red about Fassica, an ethiopean restaurant, on the opposite page.Wish there was more space to write.Argh!Other gripes: is it really necessary to give El Sereno 4 pages?Couldn't that have gone to West Hollywood or Hollywood, instead of printing those pages in 6pt type? the book doesn't lay flat and the semi-rigid cover gets dogeared, crappy neighborhoods aren't indicated, and Long Beach is relegated to a 'Parks and Places' entry on pages 241-245 instead of a regular listing at the front, making it hard to locate in the book.Minor peeves, worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars My City Bible
I bought this at Borders as a joke.It was in their bargain bin.I love this book, especially when I'm driving around town on empty and need to find a gas station fast. Unlike the phone book, it has maps.I love exploring the city, and with NFT, I have peace of mind I can find an ATM nearby. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Live without it!
We do alot of camping and this book is our bible in helping us locate remote private camping sites and then the back roads to get to them.We also enjoy riding our motorcycle in the more remote and twisty back roads of MO and again this is a good souce to know what surface the roads will be.My only complaint is sometimes the symbols are not differentiated enough from the background so they are difficult to read.

Hi AllI am a disabled traveler and Started out in Missouri and ended up in Arizona.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
This atlas is surprisingly accurate. We purchased it in preparation for our move to Missouri.Since then, we have depended on it dozens of times when the state highway maps just weren't detailed enough. There are hundreds of winding dirt roads and trails in rural Missouri, and this atlas identifies almost all of them.I also appreciate the index of campgrounds, state parks, and fishing locations. The only criticism I can muster is the odd proportion of some of the town place names. There are some tiny towns with huge fonts printed on more than a few of the pages. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Saved me some gas!
Being new to the state of Delaware, this map has been a gas saver many, many times and that's only in a couple of months.New Castle County is the most densely populated county in the state, with lots of roads and highways.Locals call the roads by their street names, like Kirkwood Highway instead of 72.If I ask for directions, locals often don't even know the highway/route number so it gets confusing.Unfortunately, most of the road signs are by number, so getting directions from locals often won't help. The great thing about this map book is that it labels roads/routes/highways by number too so this book is rather handy if/when I can't find my way. Having my ADC map book in the back seat is my little security blanket in a place that's new to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
When I moved to DE, relying on directions from natives was usually a bad idea--they'd lived here so long they all used landmarks (some of which no longer existed) to give directions. This map has yet to get me lost in 4years of use.It lists both route names (which the natives use) andnumbers (which the rest of us use.)Invaluable! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars awesome!
A friend of mine gave me this atlas for my birthday, which was a thoughtful gesture as I always manage to get lost. The first thing I noticed about the atlas was it was not state by state, which seemed odd to me at first.Once I figured out exactly how the Michelin system worked, it was so easy! This atlas is the best!Gone are the days when I run out of state and then have to pull over to find what page the next state begins on, then find where my road continues on in that state, etc...Now, I just flip to the page the little arrows tell me to go to and my road begins where it left off on the other page.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Atlas Money Can Buy
I did not think they could top last year's edition, but this is truly the best atlas on the market.I am going to use it this weekend on a weekend family vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Map
Good maps, easy to follow routes from state to state because of the way the book is laid out. This is the perfect USA Atlas to keep in the car on those long trips. ... Read more
