Atlas of the World by National Geographic
This is a wonderful full-color book on the geography of the world.
National Geographic has made changes
In December 2004, National Geographic (NG) updated the Persian Gulf plate (Plate 75) to accomodate the controversies surrounding the place-names used in the 8th edition. Incredible Family Resource
I've had the new atlas for 60 days and find myself looking something up every 2-3 days. It's really been fun looking up remote places like Palmyra Atoll, Kerguelen Island, the Fly River and other obscure places I read about.

Lifelong reference book
This atlas is the standard for Geography 101 in campuses across the country.It sets the standard because it is affordable and extremely useful in geographic exercises.In truth, it is primarily a North American atlas, but that is because it is written for and marketed to North Americans.There are still more than enough maps of other world regions to assist you in Geography 101 or to assist you in monitoring the world news.Granted, an intense study of total world geography would require an additional atlas.That said, I purchased this atlas for a geography course in which it was instrumental.Since then, I have used it in more advanced geography courses and in my daily life.While I would prefer it to be printed in a bit larger format, this size is more affordable to students.I will keep this atlas to assist in lifelong learning.

This is the textbook for my college geography course. I saved fifteen dollars over my college bookstore, their's was a softback amazon's is hardback, it will last longer, I'm happy.

More helpful than maps found in travel guides
I was very reliant on the Tokyo City Atlas and the maps found outside train and subway stations. The level of detail in the maps on the City Atlas is helpful if you're one of those people who need to check every two minutes if you're heading in the right direction.
Good, but NOT Great
You are kind of stuck.You need a map like this to navigate Tokyo, and this is the only map of its kind on the market.In other words, you pretty much have to buy this book.
Excellent Book for self-guided travel
Just like most of the reviewers, I agree that this book is an excellent source for self-guided travel. The Map is so easy to use and accurate.

Good Map
This is a good, clear map which is easy to read.The vinyl cover is a definite plus.It helps keep the map clean and notes can be tucked inside it.

Solid Road Atlas
Rand McNally is a consistantly good road atlas.The 2006 issue was very helpful in planning my recent trip.It doesn't replace the on-line maps or city atlases that show every street, turn, and such, but when you run into a temporary interstate closure, it answers the question of what is my best option now.

As easy as it gets
Ever since my first trip to NYC in 1989, I have relied on having a -no more than 2-3 years old- copy of Rand McNally in our rented car.

Exactly What It Claims to Be
Cheaply published, on flimsy newsprint, this book does exactly what it purports to do--guide the driver to the services needed by the motoring public traveling our interstates.For RVers, especially, knowing which exit has a gas station that is accessible to our 55 foot+ rigs, is critical information, saving time and frazzled nerves.

Perfect for those offramps looking
Absolutely perfect for those off ramp excursions. My only gripe with this book is that is does not have the Parkways in NY and NJ (maybe other places too). I love that it has Wal-Mart for the different exits. A must have.

Great tool to use
This guide takes a short time to figure out how to use it, but well worth it.We used the book on a 3-family trip from Illinois to South Carolina's southern coast.We found ourselves constantly looking up where rest areas were to be found, and just what was available at the exits we were approaching.

Photos too small to be of any value.And the Empire is dead .
Mr. Barber was apparently so taken by the idea of putting together a collection of his favorite maps that he forgot that: 1) there are already more map books on the market than you can shake a compass at and a bigger book of maps is not automatically a better book, 2) his book, like all the others, was inevitably going to suffer from the same defect, namely reproductions of maps so reduced in size as to be unreadable, and 3) putting the primary focus on maps relating to the defunct British Empire may be patriotic to his countrymen but only serves to amuse the rest of the world.
Absolutely worth the wait... finally arrived and it's stunning!
This book just arrived in the mail yesterday!Wow!I never thought I would be saying this about ANY item that takes almost three months to arrive (we are in the 21st century are we not?), but it was worth the wait.The breadth of this book's coverage is amazing - the organization by year is really interesting - you can see the progression of maps (and the dozens upon dozens of invented uses of maps).Many of the maps featured in this book seem to be rare gems.And the paper and print quality are top-notch.Best of all, this book tries to educate while it's busy pleasing the eye, asking its readers thought-provoking questions (like showing a composite satellite image and asking "is this a map"?).
Better to behold than to read

It's bigger than I thought!
Bigger is better, right?This map is great, we use it in our English as a Second language Programand we love it!Although the paper is somewhat thin, it still works.

This map is hot
Great map.The ladies love it.Ever since I hung it in my apartment, women just won't stop sleeping with me and giving me gifts.I am also expecting a raise and promotion at my job, all because of this map.Just this morning, I realized that I have developed the power to see into the future, and I suspect it is because of this incredible map.Rand McNally is a pimp.
Amazing!
I just bought this map for my house and I love it! The thing that makes it stand out among other maps is that each continent is equally proportioned. A lot of maps have the US in the middle and bigger than others. But this map is accurate in laying out the world. It is big, but not enormous. It's excellent, but better exists
This text by Miller is excellent, but "Maps and Mapmakers of the Civil War" by Earl B. McElfresh is superior.I suggest reading McElfresh's book first and this one second.

Maps really mattered in the American Civil War
As the Forward to this beautifully rendered large format book states, "The war was first waged on paper. Before troops engaged in battle, both sides plotted strategy and tactics on the maps of the day. Knowing the field, understanding the terrain, recognizing the route of assault--and the line of retreat--could determine triumph or defeat."Perhaps more so than in wars since, the American Civil War was fought primarily by massing large troop formations against each other.As a consequence, moving those men and their equipment using the most efficient and advantageous route became paramount. More often than not, occupation of key terrain meant victory, and therefore, arriving at the right spot, first, and with the most men was a strategic necessity in every encounter.
This Is A Must Book for the Civil War Enthusiast
Great Maps of the Civil War is as stated, a museum in a book. If one already has Rod Gragg's poignant collection of Civil War letters, "From Fields of Fire and Glory", or the Civil War in a box collection that was a bestseller some years back, then this book is a must for your collection.

Definitely Thought-Provoking
This is the best book on polyamory I've read so far, and it's the type I'll be happy to have in my collection for years to come so that I can re-read sections and lend it to friends and partners, and maybe excerpt relevant passages for relatives.
Should've been 7 stars (or at least 6)
Let me state it another way: the book is great, primarily because there are so few books on polyamory not aimed at "icky-squishy tree-huggers" looking for justification & affirmation of their chosen lifestyle.

Atlas on DVD
Just to answer Craig: Try the Microsoft Encarta DVD. It includes a world atlas that alone is worth the price.When zoomed all the way out, it is like a globe you can turn with your mouse.At the highest magnification it presents more detail than any atlas I know of. All country names and many city names and geological features are hot linked to the encyclopedia articles.There are many interactive ways of using this atlas including choosing themes like population density, precipitation, and statistics.
I'm humbled but I need your help
I have not bougght this atlas.Maybe I will BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT IS SOMETHING of superb detail that is on a DVD.Does ANYBODY make such a thing?
The formation of Arabian Gulf?
National Geographic Atlas has always been a great informational source.However, I was quite shocked by what I saw in the last edition (the 8th).I am sure most of those who have bought this Atlas or had a chance to look at it by now, have noticed the formation of a new gulf that never existed before, Arabian Gulf!It's sad how money can replace names even in the map (Arabian Gulf instead of Persian Gulf!)What National Geographic hasn't noticed yet is how its credibility has dropped among the intellectual crowd and many others are enraged by this act.I never thought history can be distorted, but with what I saw from National Geographic, which has lost it's credibility among those that understand the impact of this change, I am not so sure any more.It's unfortunate and humiliating what money can do! ... What you get is nice, wish there was more
This book is perfect for any teacher or homeschooler to show students a comparison between a few views of the Middle East regions during Bible times and present day country lines. However, you don't get very much for your money. The book retails for about $20 new and for this you get 5 pages of political-style maps with plastic overlays for present day and a couple for times in between. I had just hoped for more than 16 pages for my money. On the positive side, "Then and Now Bible Maps" is good for quickly showing present day country lines with the use of plastic overlays, and for that reason, it's a very nice addition to your Bible Study library. It also has many interesting facts about both Old and New Testaments between the map pages. However, Hammond's "Atlas of the Bible Lands" is a nice supplement, and a better punch for your dollar, with about 40 pages of geographic-style maps(showing terrain) for about $9 new.

GREAT TOOL FOR HILLERMAN LOVERS
If you enjoy having as many details as possible when you read Tony H's wonderful Leaphorn/Chee sagas, this map will help you have a much better sense of the stories. I now keep it with whichever book I am reading, so I may recall where the various settings are in relation to one another. WORTH THE SMALL EXPENSE!

Tony Hillerman's stories take place over a wide-spread area.This map helps the reader locate important points in his various novels and see their visual relationship to each other.
Very useful companion to Hillerman's mystery books
Too bad for me, this came out after I'd read most of Hillerman's mystery books. Lucky you if you haven't read most of the mysteries yet.

Driven
If you're going to Boston and don't know you're way around, you will need this book.You will need to sit down and really look at it, and then keep it with you.If you get lost, don't try and use logic or common sense to unravel your path.Just pull over and get your map out, and make a plan before you try and inch your way back into traffic.
Great!
I purchased this book for my son who is moving to Salem, Mass., from Michigan in August 2006. He took it with him when he went apartment hunting and said it was "a great help." He also used it to explore Boston. He found it to be very detailed. He liked the fact that it is spiral bound, staying open easily on the needed page. For myself, I found the print just a tad too small, but being 52, my eyesight is not what it was... My son did not find this a problem. In fact, he felt that with bigger print, the book would be increased in size unfavorably. ... Read more

Convenient design, but inadequate detail
The Streetwise London map is very convenient if you limit yourself to central London and only need to find importantattractions and/or streets of major or moderate significance. But many smaller streets in central London are NOT even named on the map and are not listed in the index. This was definitely a problem for me in finding smaller hotels, restaurants, etc. and lesser tourist attractions. In addition, the map includes some decent subway information, but nothing about buses. The reason for these inadequacies appears to be that the map is not detailed enough for there to be room to label the smaller streets and lesser tourist attractions. In summary, I suspect that this map will work better for first-time visitors than for repeat visitors.

There are much better options
I ordered "Streetwise London" based on reviews such as "must have" and "don't go without it." For central London it's a great tool!
A week in London, and this map was with me on every outing. The Streetwise Map is a great help in navigating Central London, but if you want to go beyond "Zone One" on the London Bus and Underground system, this map will be of no help at all. ... Read more

Recommend for any serious world history collection, from the high school level on up
Mapping The World: An Illustrated History Of Cartography comes from one of the major publishers specializing in geography subjects: so one would anticipate an exceptional production in book form - and it's not disappointing. Author Ralph Ehrenberg is former chief of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, among other major archives: his background lends to a lovely coverage of over a hundred maps from around the world and across the eras. Each full-page color maps is accompanied by a detailed history and explanation setting the map in social and historical perspective. Recommend for any serious world history collection, from the high school level on up.

Two very fine and beautiful books about maps appeared at the end of 2005, published within a month of each other.The other one is "The Map Book" edited by Peter Barber.I happened to discover "The Map Book" before "Mapping the World", although the latter was published first.Like "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has at its center beautifully reproduced maps in chronological order with lively and informative texts and explanations.Unlike "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has a single author of the texts, giving the latter a more unified voice and a greater sense of historical narrative.The curious reader may deep into either book on any page and become engaged in the history, culture, and technology embodied in a particular map.Both books sit on my coffee table both for easy access and conspicuous display. ...
