5-0 out of 5 stars Making Radio Waves
Fi Glover, a dj on BBC in England, finds herself between radio gigs for a few months, and decides to see what radio is like in other countries. So she buys a wind-up radio that requires no batteries or electricity and sets off for some places she'd heard were interesting, radio-wise. Travels With My Radio is the result, a hodge-podge of radio adventures in Europe, America, Lebanon, and the Caribbean.
5-0 out of 5 stars Feisty Fi's Travels with her radio
Fi Glover is an acclaimed BBC Radio Five Live broadcaster who began her career at the BBC's smallest local station Somerset Sound, later worked for GLR in London, flirted with television in BBC2's The Travel Show and now hosts BBC Radio Five Live's late show.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rome is eternal - (this rating is supposed to be 4 stars, not 1)
City of the Soul - I certainly have to concur with author Murray that Rome is a unique and wonderful place. This little book is a gentle pleasure to read. Not much new here, but there are some interesting factoids and it's nice to read of this man's personal attachment to a place that I also love. He's a good writer with the soul of an opera singer, which he originally wanted to become, and has a genuine talent for describing some of the very special locations that exist only in the eternal city.

3-0 out of 5 stars average
i had just finished reading H.V. Morton's excellent "A Traveller in Rome" when I started Murray's slim volume "City Of The Soul".Morton's book was so good, that Murray's came out as average at best.Written in 2003 with a definite personal angle from the various parts of his life spent living in Rome, the 133 pages don't take the time to venture as deeply into such a interesting city as Rome, but Murray seems to have said everything he wanted to by the end.It is possible this is only a 2 star book.If you have an interest in Rome and travel writing, read Morton's book first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rome for Romantics
I finished this book wanting to read more - about Rome and about William Murray and his family. Shortly after finishing City of the Soul, we went to Rome and enjoyed many of the walks he described. Not only that, the maps on the end pages are excellent, and the small size of the book makes it an ideal book to take along.

Editorial Review

Dave describes the dark side of tourism with such comical precision that you'll wonder why you ever bother to leave the safety of your living room. For my money, nobody has ever produced a better snapshot of the Baggage Carousel, "where passengers traditionally gather at the end of a flight to spend several relaxing hours watching the arrival of luggage from some Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars hysterical
"Mankind has always had a yen to travel," Dave Barry writes in the introduction to his "Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need." To make the journey a more comfortable one, he offers helpful tips such as "Never go outside the hotel," and "Never board a commercial aircraft if the pilot is wearing a tank top.He also promises to say if a country is awful even if he has not technically been there. He describes the advantages to traveling inside the U.S. which is that you are never far from American advantages like Chicken McNuggets and window-cup suction Garfield dolls. But he also ventures to Europe, where he describes the joy of bribing nuns, working with a travel agent, choosing a car rental company, attempting to cross the language barrier (he includes a list of helpful foreign phrases), having fun with airport security (this was written before 9-11), traveling as a family, and hints for getting through customs. He describes all 50 states (well sort of), as well as major European countries and their main attractions. He also provides maps, which if not strictly accurate, are still amusing.
5-0 out of 5 stars READING THIS BOOK IS A TRIP!

4-0 out of 5 stars A little dated, but still very funny
Written almost 15 years ago, this is, though dated, still a very funny book. Of course none of the humor inherent in travelling post 9/11 could be included or even conceived of, which makes this book a prime target for a second edition. Also, much of the fun Mr. Barry has with the different European currencies and their value is now history with the appearance of the Euro.

Amy is my cousin and I must say her book is great. She is very creative and humorous, and her writing proves this. Amy is very talented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book--great stories, great insights!
Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed this book.It was written by a 13-year-old, which gave it interesting insights, yet was extremely well written. We read it aloud during a recent 1,000 mile trip and wereinspired by Amy's courage and dedication. The ending was trulyinspirational. It's a great book to give to any teenager (my 13-year-olddaughter did most of the reading) to inspire them to have goals and reachout to achieve them.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book for a short trip
I used this book during a long weekend trip to Budapest and found it to be very helpful. The maps in the back are wonderful, and the text provides map coordinates which makes it so much easier to find shops, restaurants, etc.than most guidebooks. It's small size makes it easy to carry around toconsult, as well. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book for a short trip
I used this book on a long weekend in Budapest and found it extremely useful - especially the maps. It's particularly handy to have something small and light to bring along while exploring and this book covers thebasics well. For a trip of a weekend or 5 days, you won't need anythingelse. Budapest is a wonderful city with very friendly people. Go there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nowhere is Paradise"
Michael Palin, who did such a marvelous job with his Hemingway and Himalayan travel adventures in both TV and book forms, brings similar success to a less palatable subject:Sahara. This lovely book, filled with colorful and excellent photography, is Palin's very personal story of his 9 country/10,000 mile odyssey. He is a wonderful raconteur and guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very, Very Good Travel Book!!
I listened to this book on CD while I wallpapered my bathroom and it made the time go so fast! It is beautifully written and so easy to listen to. Palin is a master story teller and brings Africa to life with this book. Wonderful!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sahara
A pleasant adventure story about the author's trip through the Sahara Desert similar to the kind told on the Discovery HD Theater channel. One can feel the sights and sounds of the intriguing and mystical land of Africa, as Michael Palin with his British accent, tells the story of his journey. I found myself transfixed and transported back into time, invisioning myself in Morocco in the 1920's with camels and dark mahogany wood. This story inspired some of my home decorations... Recommend if you want an educational, relaxing and inspiring story. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For many, Greece is a land lost in time. It conjures up images of the looming Parthenon with its pillars of marble and the timeless whitewashed buildings of its parched islands glinting against a backdrop of the crystal blue Mediterranean. But ask about contemporary Greece and most people draw a blank. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greece warts and all
Storace, a Greek speaking writer goes to Athens to work for a year. She visits various islands and tourst sites describing these in interesting detail. Storace also recounts her personal contacts with oversolicitous men who make it very clear that women are meant to get married and stay home.Women are objects for men and infrequently taken seriously. The writer hasambiguous feelings about the Greeks. She does make lots of friends, but doesn't seem anxious to go back.

1-0 out of 5 stars hate it! hate it! hate it!
In the spirit of fairness I have attempted to read this book twice now and have put it down with a sick feeling in my gut. It's the same feeling I get whenever I find myself in the company of someoneextraordinarily pretentious and self-absorbed. I just wanted to read something intersesting about Greece. Instead, this book tells me a lot more about the peculiar psychology of the author more than anything else. I hate knowing I wasted my money of this drivel. I've yet to find a better example of mental mastrubation in my Amazon purchases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Living Mythology
This book is an interesting juxtaposition of travelogue and mythology. As a child, Storace was fascinated with the stories and characters of Greek mythology. This led to a life-long fascination with Greece and Greeks, not only of the ancient culture, but as they are today. In this book, Storace takes us on a journey to her Greece, a land that is inseparable from its mythic past. She narrates to us stories of people she met in Greece, repeating the stories they told her, all the while relating the stories to the ancient tales from Greek mythology. As a travel journal, the book is a little heavy on allusions and symbolism and a little light on realistic imagery. But direct descriptions of events is not what this book is about-instead it is the personal story of how Storace finds meaning in Greek culture through her own integration of history, mythology and observation of contemporary society. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Better than his first, but still below the bar
"Last Trout in Venice" is a slight improvement over Lansky's one-star first book "Up the Amazon Without a Paddle" (see my review there titled "awful and embarrassing"), but I don't think this has much to do with Lansky's development as a writer. Instead, I suspect it's because the editors at Travelers Tales were less forgiving than his dad (who published Lansky's first book) and trimmed out more of the bad stuff. In other words, the book is better because there is less bad material, not because there is more good material. The result is an essay collection that is usually boring, often irritating, and only occasionally amusing. Most of the time the writing barely crawls above 'amateur' status, and neither does the proofreading--I counted 18 glaring errors in the text.5-0 out of 5 stars Why do we torture ourselves?
You know you are in for an hilarious treat when an author counsels his readers to read his book in "bite size" chunks, as the stories related are just about the right length for a trip to the bathroom.4-0 out of 5 stars Choose Travel Companions Carefully Or Wear a Wet Suit!
No one gets his money's worth out of traveling as much as Doug Lansky does. He might be crazy, what with kickboxing in Thailand and hang-gliding in New Zealand, and while I don't want to fall off a gondola with him in Venice or ride in his rental car in Naples, I do enjoy reading about him. His humorous vignettes give a flavor of their writer's enthusiasm, curiosity, and life-zeal. This is wonderful reading for any traveller, arm-chair or otherwise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite sailing book. Bar none.
Joshua Slocum was a very complex man-and not a plaster saint by any account; but he wrote a book as sublime and as soul-satisfying as anyone could wish for. This is a book for a warm fire and a glass of rum, or a cabin on a sailboat. The places he sees and the people he meets are extraordinary; and vividly painted. But they pale when he describes Spray and the sea. You can hear the love and longing in his voice when he describes them. This is the last of a breed, trying to keep his heart alive after wrenching losses, at the end of his rope, and finding a way to continue on and be fulfilled. Excellent reading, it will stick with you for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Sailing Yarn
Slocom's feat set the standard as the ultimate sailing adventure - a solo around the world voyage. Even though the book is over a century old, it's still an engaging tale. Some of the prose is beginning to show it's age, and if you're not a sailor, you'll need to get past some of the seafaring jargon. But once you get past all that, you'll quickly find yourself absorbed by Slocom's yarn. From the Spray's humble beginnings as the hulking remains of a sloop "built in the year 1" to Spanish ghosts at the helm to fending off "savages" with tacks in Tierra del Fuego to Pacific island royalty and colonial governors and finally to the end of his journey, Slocum never fails to entertain, and to impress. Sailing Alone Around the World is a great read, and the adventure it describes is an amazing testament to courage, perseverance, and the human spirit of exploration.

3-0 out of 5 stars All sailing books are good....
I have read about 20 sailing / circumnavigation / family sailing books, they are almost all good but this one would be in the bottom 1/3 (ie: 2/3's are better). The journey itself is amazing. I also believe that he is without a doubt one of the greatest sailor's the world has ever known.
