5-0 out of 5 stars The best German language book/tape I've seen for beginners
This is a fantastic tape/book combination. It takes about an hour to listen/repeat the entire tape, and it contains lots of well-selected and helpful phrases.Just pop the tape in the car and repeat it 10-12 times, and you can book "ein zimmer" or order wurst with the best of them.I was so impressed with this set that I bought the French series as well. The tape promotes, at the end, an intermediate DK German series that unfortunately appears to no longer be available either at the DK website or on Amazon.Too bad! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Journey
The reader will travel with the author throughout the Middle East, following the steps of the patriarchs through the beginnings of the conquest by Joshua, in source of a connection with history and ultimately a divine spark. This author is very easy to read and provides colorful descriptions of his surroundings that allow the reader to be there. Throughout the book is an undercurrent of "Why can't we just all get along!"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to the Lands of the Bible for People of all Faiths
I've been a fan of Bruce Feiler's writing after watching him on C-Span's Book TV talk about his first book about Abraham. This must have been about four or five years ago now. I went out to purchase ABRAHAM and discovered a treasure. Feiler brings many gifts and talents to writing, particularly religious writing. First of all he writes about issues regarding faith from the point of view of one who practices his faith. Like many of his readers, his journey to faith has not been a straight path which seems to give him a good perspective on the questions people are asking. He also has a fluid writing style and is able to weave personal memoir, always interesting and at times moving stories, geography, history, and theology together to create a great read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds despite itself...
Walking the Bible is not among the better travel writing I've read primarily because it focuses more on the author than the locations he visited.Feiler did get around:from Turkey to Egypt, from the Negev to the Sinai, from Jerusalem to Jordan, but he minimizes the narrative elements one typically associates with good travel writing for a seemingly endless array of personal epiphanies. Despite it's subtitle, Walking the Bible is more a journey by catharsis through Bruce Feiler's mind than a journey by land through the five books of Moses. Thus, beyond his ubiquitous food metaphors, a descriptive presence is often found wanting.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can't jet off to London for the weekend....
A wonderful way to relax over a rainy weekend. If you've been to London, it will take you back. If you haven't, the tape will prepare you for when you do go. Powell livens up the tour with interesting, amusing, and startling facts and anecdotes. The contemporary and historical information, the accents, the readers, the mood - all make for a quick trip to the U.K. in one little box.Very much enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking Tour of Florence
This walking tour is excellent.I just returned from Italy where I used it as well as those for Ancient Rome and Venice. It is the poor man's way to see the sights because taking a guided tour with a group is very expensive. The tour is complete in that it provides good explanations of major points of interest as well as interesting background information about the history of the place.ou can go at your own pace.It does not cover museums so you have to supplement this tour with those provided by the museum itself.I found it to be a really good bargin.Note that you have to be prepared to carry a cassette player to hear the tape!Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun in the Sun
My husband and I were given this audio cassette and guide material for our honeymoon in Italy. We had a nice time.I probably would not have bought such a non-traditional tour guide before. But it turned out to be a discrete and fun way to visit the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars When are you doing France???
I just got back from my first visit to Rome and Venice. It was fantastic and the Cicerone tours were really different and fun.Read more

Editorial Review

On his only prior visit to Ireland, English songwriter-comic Tony Hawks had seen a man hitchhiking with a refrigerator. For years, he was wont to tell the tale during late-night drinking matches, and after one particularly heavy-duty night of partying, he awoke to find a bet scrawled pillowside: a friend wagered 100 pounds that Hawks wouldn't travel Ireland for a month with a refrigerator at his side.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly, silly, silly
I loved this book from the start!I first read the book shortly after my first trip to Ireland. While my trip did not involve a kitchen appliance, we kept to same kind of 'go where the road takes us' kind of philosophy.I have given this book as a gift a number of times and every friend I've given it to has adored it.People who can laugh at themselves and make you laugh right along are a rare and wonderful breed.Wouldn't it be lovely to find and appreciate the absurd all the time?

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Funny Funny!
This was a great book to read as I am heading to Ireland in 3 weeks.I hope I meet as many warm and funny folks as Tony did in his travels.Light and warmhearted and a quick read.Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Share a Pint with Tony
Now that I finished reading Round Ireland with a Fridge, I miss it. I miss hanging out with Tony Hawks, the English comedian dubbed Fridge Man, and all the people of Ireland who befriended him along the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The journey, not the arrival, matters; the voyage, not the landing."
In 1979, Paul Theroux departed from his childhood home in Medford, Massachusetts, and began his train journey from the East Coast of the United States to Patagonia, on the southern tip of Argentina.A seasoned traveler, fluent in Spanish, Theroux brings to life his trip through the northern and southern hemispheres, traveling without a schedule and observing his fellow passengers on the train and people at stops along the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars you can forgive Paul Theroux
A remark that one reads often about Paul Theroux is that he is grouchy, critical of the people he meets, and generally unpleasant. Some readers seem to suggest that this makes him a worse traveller, not being pure-of-heart or sufficiently open-minded.On the other hand, some others suggest he is worth reading as a travel writer precisely because he's not afraid to tell-it-like-it-is.I think it is likely that both of these ideas are wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Theroux - Travel Writer Extraordinaire!
For me, discovering a new author is like happening upon a gem of a restaurant that serves up a fascinating new concatenation of spices and flavors.Paul Theroux is the flavor of the month for me.I recall that several years ago I read his book about traveling along the perimeter of the Mediterranean - The Pillars of Hercules.I loved the book, and picked up used copies of some of his other titles. These volumes I placed on one of the many shelves in my home that I have mentally labeled: "To Be Read When I Can Find The Time"!In the past few weeks, I took the time to read two of those volumes, and I could not be more pleased.

2-0 out of 5 stars Toujours Provence
I enjoyed Mayle's first book A Year in Provence a lot better than this book. If you want to learn about French food and meals then this book will help you. But it is not as funny as his first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic gourmet tour of Provence
Pete Mayle does it again. Experience Provence through the poetic, visual style of the expert.Who needs to travel when you have Peter at hand?

3-0 out of 5 stars Pas mal, mais....
I knew we were in trouble when Mayle's sequel to his delightful "Year in Provence" opened with vignettes on constipation and suppositories. Oh, Mayle's fresh and breezy style is here, and he still has an eye for small but telling details, but this is mainly a retread of the same ground he worked in the much more cohesive "Year in Provence." We are told, yet again, about annoying guests, fraud in the truffle trade, and the arrogance of outsiders who are invading Provence and turning it into a playground for the rich, which is rich coming from a man who has plenty of money to finance his enviable lifestyle and quests to discover the origins of pastis!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story of Survival!
You will not be able to put this book down!I learned so much about sailing from reading this book and the other reviews make it clear that even experienced sailors have as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Alone with The Voice
Tami lost her boyfriend and the rigging of the boat they were delivering from the South Pacific to San Diego, during a hurricane they tried to avoid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important Life (and Sailing) Lessons Revealed
What a wonderful book, by a courageous woman. As I read the book, I felt that I was there with her during her struggles and triumphs. And the ending is very positive and doesn't leave the reader hanging. She's overcome a great deal in life at a young age, and has gone on to become a very solid and interesting wife and mother, I suspect.Yes, the book describes a real tragedy, the kind of thing that a sailor prays to avoid. However, there are real lessons to be found, such as equipment and design flaws aboard her boat, as well as the 'human factors' which she discusses openly.I've made purchases and upgrades to my boat (I liveaboard and cruise fulltime) based on her book and her lecture at the Annapolis sailboat show. Just buy the book, and you won't be sorry! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Before the SUV...
Amazing document about a time in American history when there were only 150 miles of paved roads in the entire country. In 1903, an adenturous 31 year old Doctor from Vermont, now retired and living happily with his weathy young wife (on her funds), decided he'd attempt to be the first to man cross the continent via the latest technological gadget: the automobile.Being a non-mechanic, he hired an equally spirited 21 year old former bicycle racer who had been working as a mechanic in a gasoline-engine factory in California to accompany him. Most roads were little more than muddy wagon paths, and when those stopped the travellers could only follow along railroad tracks or trust in their sense of direction as they set out across the vast plains and desert.Nevertheless, they made the trek successfully.Equally amazing, his beloved wife condoned his folly and waited anxiously at home. They wrote letters to each other regularly, and these (preserved) letters were the author's primary source of information about his daily successes and frustrations along his cross-country 'expedition'.This book, a companion to the PBS documentary film (available on DVD) is filled with rare vintage photos.Few would attempt such a journey today, even with modern GPS equipped 4x4 vehicles, and the book and DVD are both splendid inspirations for anyone who loves to share in the triumphs of those few individuals who would fearlessly challenge what has never been done simply because they believe they can succeed.I only wish there had been more more detailed excerpts from the original correspondences included in this book.Still, a splendid addition to your library... and your education!

4-0 out of 5 stars not the narrative from the PBS show
I had it in my head that this was going to be the audio from the wonderful PBS show but I was mistaken. It is a reading of the book. I should've looked more closely. The story, however, is wonderful. The voices from the narrative on the PBS show were more engaging and lively that those on this CD but the story remains just as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief but fun
This is a brief account of the first cross country automobile trip, sprinkled with photographs taken by the "automobilist" as he traversed the nation's dirt roads just after the turn of the last century. Horation Nelson Jackson bet someone $50 in a club in San Francisco that he could cross the country in an automobile he had just bought, and do it in less than 90 days. He spent over $8,000 winning his bet (though he never collected the money).

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about life on the road!
Okay, what to say about Marco Polo based on his own recounting. First of all, it's amazing how much this guy saw. Even accounting for his embellishments, he was obviously getting around quite a bit. Over a period of decades he travelled through China and parts of India, usually at the behest of the Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan, one of their noteworthy historical figures. Some of the tales he tells are obviously fabricated, but others are familiar even to modern day historians. When the text recounts some of the actual events he either saw or at least heard about, the reader is treated to a succinct and pleasant story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Marco Polo-The Travels
The Travels by Marco Polo. Penguin Books. 1958.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Enduring
This is a fascinating and timeless narrative for many reasons. On a somewhat superficial level, Polo's book is a must read for lovers of travel or adventure stories, as it reads like a great lost book of the Bible, rife with historic vengeance, heroic warriors, eccentric mystics, penultimate battles and rallying speeches that seem torn out of the best passages of Thucydides. Many of the practices and beliefs Polo witnessed -- specifically, polygamous peoples, perspectives on sexuality, methods of execution and the dazzling ways in which the people Polo came across attempted to please the gods and interpret the cosmos -- offer a memorable glimpse into a unique historical epoch. Particularly engrossing are the stories of violent tensions between Christian and Islamic sects in Polo's day and region. One gets a sense that not much has changed in the past 800 years as Polo details the struggles between the eastern and western world even then, many of which redound to financial issues (sound familiar?). Polo's insistence on portraying Moslems and Buddhists as savage rogues does make for a one-dimensional and distinctly Christian view of the world as it was in Polo's day, and his language is hardly the most attractive aspect of the book, which is written in a particularly conversational and redundant style. But the stories and characters contained within these pages are epic and unforgettable. I encourage lovers of Tolkein, C.S. Lewis and Rowling to read this book. Lovers of ancient history and philosophy are also bound to adore it. Most impressively, though, is the insight Polo offers into the birth of the now-infamous rift between the western and eastern worlds. This enduring relevance guarantees that we will be reading Polo's "Travels" for centuries to come. ... Read more

When I lost my hubby who was my best friend of 33 yrs. suddenly, I could not handle it.I read so many books but this was the ONLY one that gave me peace and let me think that he was definitely in the best place----away from pain and that he will always be with all of us.Pls. take my advice and read this book.it will help with the heartache and sadness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read other books....such as the Bible
I really enjoyed this book till page 15 When Destefano begins to desribe the "interim phase" which sounds a lot like "soul sleep."This idea that those who die remain unconscious until the resurrection, is not backed up by the bible, which is where Destefan supposedly gets his references for his book. There is a reason he quotes the scriptures with numbers and records them in the back of his book....it is because the scriptures just don't fit HIS picture of Heaven.I do hope others will continue to read other books, such as John MacArthur's "The Glory of Heaven,"who quotes the scriptures immediately.Read other books about this topic before you recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good tours
I always get these tours when I travel. They are inexpensive and thorough. Venice is the best yet. The voice is so clear that I can hear everything, even above street noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like The Cicerone
Glad to see this new tour with The Cicerone. We like his tours and use them whenever we go to Italy. I think the maps are fabulous because they are so large I can see them without my spectacles. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Be very, very afraid. When you step through your door for an innocent excursion, grave danger awaits. You might be mugged; tied up; attacked by scorpions, piranhas, or tarantulas; trapped in a falling plane or elevator, a runaway train, a car on a cliff, a sandstorm, a riptide, or a riot. But now it's safe to take that vacation anyway. Just pack Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Series of Worst-Case Events
Two things you should know when considering whether to buy this book:
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and handy
This book was so funny! My friend and i have nothing better to do, so we went and sat there and read all of the worst case scenario book, and i must say, this one was bomb! i loved the emergency phrases in the back, such as: Why is the water brown/green/yellow?
4-0 out of 5 stars Light reading for the adventurous tourist
This book, like the others in the series, is tongue in cheek. Some of the advice and scenarios are practical but others are completely in fun. My favourite was the advice of what to do if you are threatened with alien abduction. You should not let your mind give in to them. In other words, stop hallucinating and you will be just fine. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it
It is impossible to find your way around in the Forums. After searching all over last time I went to Rome for the place where Mark Antony made his speech and Caesar was stabbed, I decided I would take this walking tour with me. It is the first map and guide I have seen that really helps you find everything. Very well researched and interesting. ... Read more
