3-0 out of 5 stars Fresh start for Johnstone
I'm happy with a new series by Johnstone. The plot was somewhat realistic, given this book was written well before the 9/11 event. Terrorists plot to kill the President, and many Americans in NYC, for the PLF (People's Liberation Front)'s cause. The new hero is John Barrone, along with other ex-Federal, State agents. They train together in West Texas and track the PLF from L.A., across country to NYC. They also must keep quiet about who they are to the FBI, CIA...etc. Lots of action, but little character development give this novel 3 stars. However, am impressed that Bill does not preach his philosophy every other chapter as in the Ashes series, and some of his more recent books like Breakdown. Although, I agree with most of that philosophy, we just want a good story. Looking forward to reading the next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars New series is good for Johnstone
Code Name: Payback is an exciting new action series that will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.I'm very excited about this new series of books.A must for you action junkies out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars My 1st Book by the Author

3-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual ContextNot Advertised
I bought this book for my husband, when he took a new job requiring lots of travel. While there is lots of good insight to be had, the book has a strong fundamental Christian bias that was not publisized. My husband is turned off by all things religious, so was taken aback at what he felt was a hidden spiritual agenda behind it.We were disappointed that someone hasn't written a book on this important topic without the religious bias.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for New BizTravelers or Road Warriors!
I've always had pains of guilt when I would travel to some great place and have room service and maid service..... and leave my family behind. The cover of the book says more to the truth of trying to stay connected to our families than any human resource manual from work. When you take a job that travels... h/r doesn't tell you the effect on your marriage!4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for those who travel and love people who travel
I have found this book to be very insightful to the problems and challenges for not only those who travel but for the families of those travel. It gave me a new insight to BOTH sides. I am ordering more books togive to my co-workers! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars could of been better
the book was pretty good but it didn't really capture what was going on in the water. Unfortunately the writer didn't have first hand expierance of the kayaking in the gorge. The book focused more on his joyage than the kayakers. It was like a documentary on the film crew instead of the subject. Pictures were needed for visualazation purposes and also a crude map would have been nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Accompaniment to the DVD (and vice versa)
I bought and read this book (from Amazon) after seeing it on display at my local Borders.A growing interest in Tibet combined with a passion for non-fiction adventure stories made this a perfect choice. After finishing the book, I received the DVD (Into the Tsangpo Gorge), which brings the whole story to life. However, I am certain I would not have enjoyed watching the DVD as much were in not for having read the book first. If you already have the DVD, I highly recommend the book to round out the story. And if you've already read the book...the DVD is a MUST.
1-0 out of 5 stars self-knowledge??
The only paragraphs worth reading are the once Heller got from other books, I'd suggest you'd read those if you want to know about the Tsangpo's history.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Cahill has perfected the art of the short travel essay"
One of my favorites. Author of Pecked to Death By Ducks and A Wolverine is Eating My Leg, Cahill, a founder of Outside Magazine, has perfected the art of the short travel essay. There are man-eating sharks, dangerous cave diving, eating cheese in a yurt in Mongolia and all sorts of ridiculous first hand escapades all over the globe. He is brilliant and brilliantly funny. Perfect travel book to take along on a trip. If you want to learn how to write, read Cahill and pay close attention to his introductions and conclusions.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the Vicarious Adventurer
Cahill's writing is somewhat of an acquired taste. This is a compilation of outdoor stories which do not always seem self contained - some missing context, some missing closure. And they are not necessarily adventures in the conventional sense, as stories may focus on nature, archaeology, sociology, etc. While the book cannot be construed as an outdoor reference, there is good information (ex. "wisdom" of cave diving). Some stories hit the vicarious adventurer's sweet spot. The author is at his best in this book when relating his experience caving in Kentucky, engaging the reader with educational content (ex. barometric effect on air flow), spectacular descriptions(ex. lightening igniting bat guano), and hair raising suspense (ex. getting lost in a maze of passages). Not all of the stories held an equal level of interest for me, but they are short enough to peruse and ponder as time permits.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just chills and thrills, but something to say as well
This is a well-written collection of essays by Cahill, subtitled "Adventure is a Risky Business," that succeeds best when Cahill is trying to make due with human nature rather than mother nature. Or, possibly, that's just where my interests lie. Even arm-chair tourists whose idea of "getting back to nature" is a stroll down the block can't help but envy Cahill as he is pushed in assignment after assignment in which he looks danger in the face and blows it a raspberry, and then falling on his face. Woah, that extended one metaphor to the breaking point, which Cahill tends to do at times as well. But don't think all is just chills and thrills here. There's some social commentary (some biting, some toothless), vivid description, outlandish occurrences, and breathtaking wonder. It may seem at times that you're reading a transcript for "NOVA," but is that so bad? Cahill's written two other volumes like this--A Wolverine is Eating My Leg and Pecked to Death by Ducks--which I plan to find and read, and that's probably recommendation enough for this volume. ... Editorial Review

Thomas Wolfe's trusted axiom about not being able to go home again gets a compelling spin through the African veldt in Alexandra Fuller's Read more

Reviews (25)

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, who cares if the details are not 100% accurate
The way Alexandra Fuller describes the people, the attitudes and the land is brilliant. Anyone really involved in the South African conflicts would recognise parts of themselves, or their friends in the different characters that are described in the book. This book is an accurate description of Southern Africa and its people who have been affected by 40 years of tribal conflict and faithfully portrays the complicated relationship between black and white.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This was definitely a let-down after "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight", which I thoroughly enjoyed. I found "Scribbling" to be rambling and without purpose at times. It seems unfinished and incomplete.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dishonest Account of Africa
The author should have stated that this book was fictitious rather than stringing the reader along. The first few chapters are engaging, but it is unrealistic that she would leave her family and, on a whim, travel with "K" to his old Rhodesian War haunts. It was also a fallacy to suggest that she was so naive as to not pick up on his attraction for her.I was truly dissapointed by the self-promoting arrogance of this author and the trivialized generalizations that were haphazardly made about Africa.A true waste of time. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.
This book is not for someone who just wants to pick up enough Italian to get them through a trip unless they have a good ear and memory.I found "Italian in 10 Minutes a Day" much better as you must write what you learn in a workbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not a stand-alone tool
I strongly agreed with the reviewers who described the Fodor's CD as poorly organized, too quickly spoken, and not terribly useful. In some instances they stated the English term and then followed it with the Italian; in others they stated the Italian term first. Because there was no warning about the switch, if you're not on your toes you may find yourself repeating the wrong Italian term for the English word you believe you are translating. 2-0 out of 5 stars CDs are poorly organized.
I paid full price for this set because I'm planning a trip to Italy. The book isn't bad but the CDs are pretty terrible. They have boring drills on numbers and vocabulary. Not at all interactive. The phrases are read in Italian and then English, but sometimes in English and then Italian without warning.Since I know no Italian, I had a hard time knowing which English word went with which Italian word (and since I was listening in my car, I couldn't check the book while driving to find out). All in all this is a pretty poor set of language tapes, and it's way overpriced.I'm sure one can do better. ... It is so wonderful to see that Elizabeth von Arnim's books are being reprinted.I find it difficult to pick a favorite, because all her books are delightful. This book is wonderful because it is so full of humor.I laughed out loud at some scenes! How Elizabeth "escapes" from different groups of people on Rugen and her descriptions of them make fun reading.I hope this and other books by Elizabeth that are being reprinted will spark a whole new generation of fans. She is a writer who doesn't deserve to be forgotten. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Come back to Pete's Pub, Mr. McCarthy
Loved the book. Truly a witty and lyric journey through Ireland (and an alcohol-fueled haze). It was especially nice to see my local, Pete's Pub in Boston, mentioned in the Prologue. Come visit us again sometime, Pete McCarthy. The fat barman wants his shirt back.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Informative
If you love wit that is both droll and fey, then you'll love this book. McCarthy has observed and then served up the Irish and many parts of Ireland very accurately. In the words of my Irish friend who gifted me with the book, "He actually got it and didn't make a caricature of it." He wanders through his various observations, settling upon many thoughts and subjects, which is a big part of the book's charm. But if you need a straight style and less complex sentence structures, then you may be one of the folks who won't provide a great review. I, however, couldn't recommend the book more.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very dissappointing book
This book was recommended by a friend (not Irish) who thought it was hilarious. I found the book so lacking in humour and wit that I couldn't believe someone could enjoy such a read. National stereotypes are amusing but when they are not funny they come across as patronising, as did this book! ... Read more
