300 Basic Words & Phrases, a month of pure joy using it in Vietnam

Only 300 basic words and phrases but what a wonderfully useful little guide.The audio was just right on for a beginner like me.Allowed me to hear and practice before the trip but the best part was the incredible 2x8=16 (front and back) panel folding booklet that came with the cassette.I can't tell you how many times I pulled it out of my pocket and pointed to a word to a native in Hanoi, DaNang and Saigon and was able to get a bicycle brought to me at the hotel, a tennis racket AND lessons from a pro, an improvised "tour/sightsee" by cyclo, and the most funny of all a "NAPKIN."How weird is that, they're not a paper society, they have no concept of papertowels and such amenities.Once I asked for nuo'c cai tra'i ca^y (Fruit Juice) I had all the orange, papaya, watermellon juice they could find at the open market; freshly squeezed and put in my room. We went to the market to buy stuff and I used too expensive (da' qu'a) so much and they loved it when I said this...they are very good at bargaining but are very fair, they always lower the price if you know how to say how much (Bao nhieu)Really enjoyed the trip, it made the whole vacation so much better to be able to engage in the language and they really rewarded us for trying. One complaint, I couldn't find the CD version and there's no iPOD version. It would sell like crazy if converted to digital medium and uploaded to iTunes or a server to us mp3 enable travelers.I took my iPOD everywhere and wished I had the audio in MP3 format. ... An imperialist's nostalgia.
British writers, writing about India are of two types. One are genuine humanists who look at today's India from an objective albeit sometimes sympathetic point of view. Mark Shand falls in the other category- ruminating nostalgically about the Raj, although, the present story is somewhat melodramatic and about an elephant.
Quick-Reading Fun In India
The British seem to be particularly adept at coming up with whimsical ideas, making them happen, and then writing about them (cf. comedian Tony Hawk's Round Ireland With A Fridge, and Playing the Moldovans At Tennis or journalist Andrew Marshall's The Trouser People to mention just a few recent examples). Shand continues the tradition, concocting a scheme to buy an elephant and march around India on its back. This quick-reading book is an account of his adventure in India, where he purchases an emaciated 30-year old elephant ... from a pair of saddhus (mystic holy men) in the province of Orissa (a few hundred kilometers SW of Calcutta). His goal is to walk her from the coast to the great elephant market on the banks of the Ganges at Sonepur Mela, some 1000 kilometers north, in Bihar, where he would sell her. Travels on my Elephant

MUST VACATION READING -- BEHIND THE HEADLINES GREAT
PJ O'ROURKE WAS AN INTERNATIONAL editor for ROLLING STONE for years-- he's a dude from Ohio who has traveled the world especially as he says the 'hell holes' -- that's why it's called Holidays in Hell...he revisits some of the war zones he's been too -- Lebanon, Panama, Post-Marcos Philippines, El salvador and then throws in a whole slew of controversial trips -- to such amazing places as Seoul, Korea, Heritage USA, At sea with the America's Cup, Africa in the 'old days' a Mexico border patrol experience, the Holyland and even Epcot Center. You must read his stuff-- he may just be one of the best writers of our time. -- This guy has an amazing droll, dark comedy sense of humor or is it irony or sarcasm? His world goes behind the scenes where we would not want to go. He sees what we might not and talks about what we would never dare to -- at least without some brewskis in us. In the preface he talks about this beinga takeoff of Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad-- and it is but it is also a cross between Chevy Chase National Lampoon Vacation and RV with Robin Williams and a bit of Updike (for the people) Steinbech for the locations/places vs spaces and the sarcasm of a Philip Roth -- and it appears to be non-fiction. Terrific read-took it on my vacation trip and it's easy to carry around and easy to read because each chapter is short -- 20-30 pages max and about one subject-- bit like a short story...yet it all flows together. No matter what happens to you -- restaurant closed, flat tire on car, plane delay, yearning for a fresh apple instead of peanuts-- it all looks like a day in the park compared to his hellish experiences. BUT THEY WILL make you laugh and think. The sad part is the headlines today read like they did 25 years ago-- so it helps us come full circle with some history on the hot spots like Lebanon and Israel and even Seoul. GREAT BOOK

Total Classic PJ
I've read everyone of PJ's books, this one is his signiture writing if there is such a thing. Its up on the night stand with Catcher in the Rye and a few others that I pick up and re-re-re read every year. Holidays in Hell is a bit dated now but still the best thing he's ever done. I wish PJ would do a 21st century version of this book. Unfortunatly it doesnt seem that he talks about his travels much anymore. Lately, some of his books are getting a bit heavy and intense to read and seem to have less of that usual built in fun. Thats OK. Thats where his heads at now I guess.. I think PJ may be turning into (or already is) a crotchity old man who likes to complain alot. He is, however, the best writer in satire journelisem there ever was.I'm always looking on the book shelves or Amazon for a new PJ.

One of P.J.'s Best
I've been a fan of P.J. O'Rourke since his days writing for National Lampoon magazine in the 1970s and first read this book when it came out back in the late 1980s. "Holidays in Hell" is made up of essays on his travels, mostly as a foreign correspondent. (I say "mostly" as some of the chapters concern his visits to American sites such as Heritage USA, Epcot Center, and the campus of Harvard University.)

Queen of the Elephants
A good read if you are a seasoned traveller in India and a fan of 'Travels on My Elephant' the cracking original which inspired this follow-up. However the book is disappointing in many ways as it seems to repeat the story of Shand's apprenticeship as a Mahoot only under new circumstances and a new teacher. Much of the mystery and adventure of the first novel could not translate into this sequel. On the plus side the prose, the plot and the writing craft unfold in a very readable way and one wonders why this author has not published more than three books. ... Read more
