4-0 out of 5 stars Natnats, hot sun, and dangerous men.
Four corners is a tale of a 24 year old woman's journey across Papua New Guinea. Her experience makes for a wonderful read, but she overworks the "finding herself" bit. Despite the self obsessive and all too frequent maudlin tangents, Salak writes in tight prose that grips the reader early in the book and doesn't let go until the second to last chapter (the last chapter is so sappy it brought the entire book from a solid 5 stars to a 4. It nearly morphed the read from high adventure to a "chick" book).
5-0 out of 5 stars moving and insightful

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
I am leaving for my second trip to Papua New Guinea in little under a week. Ifound Salak's book to be a great read! I agree with another reviewer that her introspective thoughts became a bit redundant but all in all the book flowed well and was very interestingRead more

4-0 out of 5 stars immense desolation
As an expatriate Sandgroper, this narrative was quite entrancing. The authors have clearly spent much time traipsing through the vast areas of Western Australia. Arguably, they have seen more of it than many of its locals, who tend to be congegated in the Perth metropolitan area. Thus, somewhat ironically, a ready audience for this book might be people in Perth that wish to get out and see more of Australia's largest state.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and depressing
The book is depressing because it's about extinction and endangerment; it's funny because our authors manage to stay optimistic and cheerful in the face of extinction. They have an extremely clear eye for the foibles of humans, as well as for the traits of the animals they see. It takes talented writers to make roadkill amusing; these guys manage it.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is very special
I loved this book, because it was humorous, compelling, and educational. The "team" felt like friends, even the odd but likeable Alex.I found all the information about Tasmanian wild life fascinating. It made me feel differently about that little corner of the world. This is way to learn about the background of the Tasmanian tiger and many other creatures. It sure beats reading a dry 'academic' tome on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Mystery Tour to Tasmania
Carnivorous Nights is a hugely enjoyable read. The authors and their artist pal travel from the museum of natural history in NYC to view rare aboriginal artwork outside of Sydney, Australia, and then on to the wild and strange island of Tasmania---where they encounter screaming Tasmanian devils, baby fairy penguins, creepy cave creatures, andmuch more. All the while, they keep their eyes peeled for the iconic Tasmanian tiger---which was last seen in 1936. While theoretically extinct, this wolf-like marsupial has been sighted repeatedly, and is the object of awe and lore in Tasmania.Do they still exist, are they extinct, or something in between?

3-0 out of 5 stars ENVY
This former real estate broker decided to sail away after his long-term marriage ends up in divorce. He makes it to Tonga where he meets up with 3 women who join him onboard his small sailboat. They live through storms, piracy, wonderful anchorages in deserted islands and exotic towns. The reading is very entertaining, the sail advice is not the best (he had only a few months of sailing experience before writing this book), the writing is not the best, but the story of these four souls is great. This is one of those books that are hard to put down and you are sorry they do not go on for another few hundred pages. The limited English can be forgiven as is so entertaining and original.Any male (and many females) that reads Alan's story will have a huge envy attack. It would be great to have a follow up book on what happened afterwards to each character in the book.It would be interesting to read the version of these events by the other participants. It would be reassuring to get confirmation that this story is real (or maybe not, a guy should not be that lucky!) There is no mention if the picture on the cover shows the actual characters.Anyway, it is great reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Stars!
If this book were a horse it wouldn't even make good glue.First, the author writes this in the third person which, after fifty or so pages, I finally over came. Then he uses italics and quotation catch phrases over and over and over and over - ad nauseum. There is a hint of the erotic, what with three women and just him. But it becomes apparent very soon that he is as bad a lover as he is a writer. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book reminded me of this joke I heard once....
When reading this book, I kept thinking of this joke as a possible insight into why the author wrote his book:Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars simple review
Mr Bennetts and Mr Wheeler chronicle the unique world of island life with a gentle touch of objectivity whilst acknowledging the charm of 'place' and the potential of subjective reaction by a reader. This book is a beautiful reminder that there are places other than your workstation -bigger skies than the ceiling grid and underfoot textures more surreal than nylon carpet. ENJOY!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hometown Guide
The Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition will be out soon, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars somewhat engaging but flawed
Unfortunately, I do not quite share the enthusiasm expressed by the other reviewers. Although Duff is an excellent descriptive writer, the numerous descriptions and philosophical musings in this book tend to go on and on needlessly; I do not need to read three pages about what it was like to find two apples in the ocean and eat them, or read description after description of the joys and epiphanies one experiences while paddling in a remote area. A little of that goes a long way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.
A couple of years ago I saw Chris Duff speak at Canoecopia - a worldwide paddling expo held in Madison WI. One of his talks was about his solo circumnavigation of New Zealand's south island - the same topic as this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wow, Voyager!
By Bill Marsano. Chris Duff's photos, which are bundled together and whacked a little perfunctorily into the middle of this book, limp under the heading of 'snaps.' Duff belongs to the old school of kayakin' shutterbugs: compose any old how, so long as the bow of the boat is in the frame; shoot in any old light; and shoot, sometimes, any old subject. There's a darn nice snap of a Hooker seal here but what I really wanted was more pix of the damage (and later repairs) to his boat from the surf landing that nearly killed him. I'm just saying. (And the maps are even worse--clear, but seldom helpful.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A legal videographer examines the possibilities, sightings, and realities
In 1994 seven boys saw the giant ropen flying over a crater take: in 2004 an American foresnsic videographer interviewed them and gained more details of a creature with a wingspan longer than a village hut. Could a living pterosaur elude scientists and discovery for decades? A legal videographer examines the possibilities, sightings, and realities in SEARCHNG FOR ROPENS: LIVING PTEROSAURS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA.
1-0 out of 5 stars Right-Wing Religion Disguised as Cyrptozoology
This book is awful. The author starts off with a right-wing Christian agenda about how idiotic Darwinism is.This is cryptozology for paranoid creationists. You will read about his boring (and short) visit to New Guinea and how he questioned a few people there about the Ropens. But you will mostly have it pounded into your head that the Christian bible is truth and evolution is wrong.*SIGH*
