Childress has uncovered a deep Pacific base for ancient navigators,
interesting, but no classic
Good compilation of information (as you can probably judge from the 5-page bibliography), but not much of a leisurely read. Discusses possible origin of the polynesians, ancient ruins found on the said islands, as well aslegends and artifacts passed on through generations. The author manages totouch alot of topics, but as a general interest book, it just doesn't work.

simple review
Mr Bennetts and Mr Wheeler chronicle the unique world of island life with a gentle touch of objectivity whilst acknowledging the charm of 'place' and the potential of subjective reaction by a reader. This book is a beautiful reminder that there are places other than your workstation -bigger skies than the ceiling grid and underfoot textures more surreal than nylon carpet. ENJOY!

Some enjoyable South Pacific yarns
I don't know why no one has reviewed this volume before.It is a good readable edition of several of Stevenson's South Sea stories, including the rarely encountered novel The Ebb Tide.The introduction is interesting enough, and the footnotes are very helpful for expressions in the Beach-la-Mar pidgin dialect and nautical terms.This is Stevenson's most mature fiction and is a far cry from Kidnapped and the Child's Garden of Verses. ... A Very Poor Guide! :-(
Once upon a time, Lonely Planet had a good guide to Papua New Guinea (371 pages), and an excellent one to the Solomon Islands (279 pages). For better or worse these fascinating countries don't exactly attract hordes of holidaymakers, so after leaving those books unupdated for many years, the publisher now has decided to dump them together in this new edition (272 pages).
Great guide book
As usual for the lonely planet guides, a well researched and detailed travel guide. I have not been to Papua New Guinea yet, so I can not comment on the accuracy of the information, but there is a wealth thereof. I respect the author's achievement, as it is obviously much easier to research for a travel guide about a European country where most people speak English and credit cards are accepted than for a pre-industrial place like Papua New Guinea, still mostly unspoiled by westernization.

LP is always very useful
I have never liked how LP guides are arranged but have found them to consistantly have the best information [not perfect but better than other guides.]I wish they had not included Tonga as I am not going there and always travel as light at possible.The binding is not condusive to removing unwanted pages but I will remove the Tonga section anyway.I say, 'buy it!' but don't get bent out of shape should some info not prove to be correct. ... A great guide, as always
As usual, Lonely Planet provides all possible advice for anyone visiting Tonga.This guide meets the Lonele Planet standard.For those who have used or read other LP guides in the past, nothing more needs to be added...Don't go to Tonga without it !

This was a very interesting guidebook.I found it to be very helpful in all aspects. It was very easy to read. I especially liked the boxed sections on various nuances of the country and culture.The languagesection was also very helpful.Great Guide.

Another Excellent LP Book
Written in the same style as all the Lonely Planet books, this book enabled us to plan a fantastic holiday to Tonga.The information was precise and exact, and laid out in an easy to use arrangement with helpfulsection headings. very helpful in my u/w photography

Tonga & Samoa in one book
I used the Moon guidebook to Tonga and Samoa during a 3 1/2 week trip to the South Pacific in early 2001. I found the book very useful because it covers Tonga and Samoa in one condensed book. There are enough details to travel on both island groups for a couple of weeks and not missing information in this great guidebook. The book isstill quite accurate there is enough details for each spot you will visit on your trip. In general this book has helped me a lot to find my way around the islands with detailed maps and a wide range of unbiased information.

Very Funny

Beached Down Under
I fell in love with the Solomons during two visits in the mid-1980s. Will Randall has captured the spirit of the islands very well.... the casualness of the process, the friendships of the locals, the dubious expats who drift in and out.

As an american i found the book to be very intresting not only for the relaxing journey though the south pacific but also for Randall's british ways, Reading solomon time made me think of Will as Hugh Grant. The conversations with the islanders were very good , the desciptions of the island scenery and people was great and i feel like i came away knowing a remote village in a far flung corner of the map, which is always an indication of a good book. ...
