5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to make the most of limited time
I have the first edition of this book and it has been an invaluable guide to the incredible hiking in the Northwest.Living in the east and only getting to the west when business or a vacation take me there (for relatively short periods of time) I've always tried to make the most of the time I did have to hike.I have done about 1/3 of the hikes in the book and have yet to be disappointed.I have other, more detailed, hiking books for these areas but I rely on this one for selecting my hikes.I just wish this type of book were available for other areas of the country.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hiking The Great Northwest
The hikes cover some of the best hiking over a large area.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading about these hikes will give one arousal
it encompasses the hikes that every avid hiker must do before or during death. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good for the Money
Its construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy tounderstand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in thebook, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevationchange included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very welldone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
The Spartacus and Damron guides have their place on any travel bookshelf but this book has something that they do not...namely, very detailed, firsthand descriptions of the venues listed. The authors descriptions of the West Coast cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) are pretty much spot on.For example, when in Vancouver I noticed how young all the clubgoers were and when reading the entry on that city I saw that this was not just my own perception but reality. He describes the scene in Portland, perhaps the most underrated city on the West Coast as "scruffy" but not in a perjorative sense, but rather endearingly. Each city chapter is logically broken down into nightlife, eats, sights, etc.Aside from being a cutie (based on his back cover photo) the author is always funny and perceptive in his comments. This is one of those books that I pull off my bookshelf fairly regularly and it's tragic that it is currently out of print with no new edition in sight.Early editions aren't too hard to come by but good luck tracking down the last (3rd edition) which I recommend without reservations!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good research
I'm glad I have this book to refer to.No matter where we consider traveling, I have this handy book to know what's "out" there for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great general guide to places you might miss...
I bought this book back in 2001 for a trip to New York. Not knowing anything about "the city", I needed some help. Along with this one, I purchased a few other guides focusing on gay oriented places in the U.S. and New York, but this one was far better. With it's insightful mini reviews of places shown in the guide, I got ALOT from this book. From places to stay, to places to see, it'll give you a great base to start with when trying to find nightlife, or otherwise, in ANY new city. I'm taking it back with me again to New York and to Seattle this time. But, be weary, as with any guide, places change, and what you read might not be as bad as it says it is, or it could be worse! Thanks for reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Toronto
This is a wonderful book filled with colorful pictures and interesting text.I expecially appreciated the way the author divided the book between house styles and neighborhoods.Toronto is blessed with wonderful neighborhoods and this book does a commendable job of giving a quick glace at each one. The photos are so vivid and the cross section of homes wonderfully selected.I really didn't know what to expect from this book and I was wonderfully surprised about the text on the different neighborhoods. Very well done, indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sumptuous feast of beauty
This is a truly wonderful book, packed with gorgeous pictures of lovely old houses. The pictures are all perfect, and they even include some interiors. The Victorian houses are especially interesting, as they're different in style from what we have in the U.S. If you're familiar with the "painted ladies" books, this is a similar idea, with better quality photos.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than a Great Guide
Over the last two summers I have paddled the Fur Trade Route from Pinehouse Lake to Pelican Narrows. This book was the perfect guide with accurate information on rapids, rock paintings, campsites and navigation. This was very important this year with the high water on the Churchill.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best canoeing reference book ever written
It is hard to imagine that anyone could ever write a better reference manual to canoeing the historically significant section of the Canadian fur trade route which runs through Saskatchewan. In the summer of 2003 I paddled the entire Churchill and Sturgeon Weir river systems, from the Clearwater River to Cumberland House. This book was an invaluable resource, describing clearly every rapid, portage, and most of the campsites along the river.5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
This past summer, I put together a three week canoe trip on the churchill river.I found this book in Ric Dreideger's canoe outfitter's store in Missinipe, and immediately bought it. (luckily) Our trip started from Pinehouse lake, and two of us paddled past stanley mission, then backtracked to missinipe, eventually covering some 140 miles. This book covers the whole of the churchill river in detail, while giving brief historical backgrounds about the voyageurs who used to make a living on the waterway.I followed our route in the book, and it was of particular importance when it came to rapids and portages, which were numerous on our route. It was always right on as to the degree of difficulty of the rapids, so we made few mistakes. Once I got confused in a series of rapids as to which was which and ended up running a dangerous one where we were swamped and I injured my knee. However, this can be avoided using *prudent* scouting of all rapids (we were over-zealous), and by paying attention to warnings in the book.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars bad, eh?
This book was a waste of money. I found that it provided very little concrete information except to list public restrooms - which is not my standard of a good travel book. The ad nauseam restaurant recommendations were uninspired. What really annoyed me though, was the authors' lack of detail. For example, they would suggest looking at the petroglyphs at Englishman River, but give no information on where said petroglyphs are or how to get to them - and guess what? It's kinda a long river.
