5-0 out of 5 stars A "big little book"
As a longtime Alaskan, I feel fortunate to have had both Doug and Jill in many courses. The book Snow sense is now the required reading material for all Nat'l Ski Patrol avalanche courses, and rightly so. I read it at thebegining of every season. True avalanche professionals. If you ever havethe chance, come to Alaska and take one of their courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Backcountry Magazine #19, 1999
Used by avalanche professionals as a base for avalanche education classes. Small size but HUGE on concise information for learning to recognize, evaluate, and avoid potential avalanche hazards.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing memoir
I can count on one hand the number of books that have truly and wholly transported me to another time and place. The Last Gentleman Adventurer easily joins the work of Jack London and Herman Melville in this regard, with the happy and astonishing distinction of being a true account rather than fiction. The author, Edward Maurice writes with a rare kind of insight, humane and honest. His adventures are at once breathtaking and sobering. My only regret is that this was his only book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dawn of His Life but the Twilight of an Era
Edward Beauclerk Maurice, in his waning years, looked back on his first job, a job so distant in time and space that it might as well have been hundreds of years ago:In the 1930s, Maurice was recruited as a teenager to run one of the last fur-trading outposts in Arctic Canada operated by the Hudson Bay Company.Dropped off in a tiny Inuit village with a year's worth of trading supplies, he is meant by the Company to be both purveyor and parent to the local people.Of course, as an unexperienced teenager he had no skills for either role, and it is only through the benevolence of the villagers that he is able to cope.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age in the Arctic
"The Last Gentleman Adventurer" is a delightful, even beautiful account by Edward Maurice of his time as a young clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Canadian Arctic of the 1930's.Maurice was working literally at the intersection of the Inuit and European worlds. We are most fortunate as readers that the author was unjaded, exceptionally observant, and open to the possibilities of life in that time and place.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book
For over thirty years, Canadian photojournalist Fred Bruemmer has lived with and photographed the Arctic peoples of North America, and in this book he draws on his numerous experiences to fashion poignant and moving memoir of his life in the North and the many people who he has met. This is a book that for someone like myself, who has a limited understanding of this region, will give them new understanding and deeper insight into its past and the lives of the peoples who have inhabited it for countless generations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a read-aloud to the family book
I got out all the maps of the Inland Passage along the British Columbia coast to follow each adventure this articulate widow with five imaginative and curious children and one dog discovered. Her tales of their explorations in a small boat and descriptions of wonderful scenery climaxes in the longest selection near the end of the book: "A Whale...Named Henry [18 pages], the just pleads to be translated into a Newberry Award children's book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit of history, a bit of philosophy, a bit of adventure.
This book was highly recommended to me by a friend who has cruised the Inside Passage and explored the islets of British Columbia and Alaska for the past 15 years. Many beautiful places are vividly described by Ms.'Capi' Blanchet. The lasting impression is the feeling of having spent time as a companion to the author and her children as they experience the adventure of travel and exploration as they cruise far from home in their small boat, in the 1930's.I enjoyed meeting unique people like 'Mike' - the knowledgeable recluse who expresses much of what must be the authors own philosopy of life.Altogether this little book is a bit of history, a bit of philosophy, and a bit of adventure.I didn't want it to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
A amazing woman. As good as any cruising book written. And a shame that this woman wrote only one book. A very good picture of cruising, the Pacific NorthWest and, a simpler time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Travel Guide
When I visited Quebec, the guide was a great help. Although most of the prices, hours, and descriptions of the sights and eateries were accurate, some were not, or outdated. A particular restaurant was highly rated in the review, but when I tried to visit the place, the restaurant was nowhere to be found with the given address. Otherwise, the book is good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I used the lonely planet Canada for travelling from the West Coast to the East Coast. In most places I found that it gave me all the information that I needed on hostels and places to eat.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
This book is a lot of things, and none of them good. The authors really don't know the country very well, or have failed to visit many of the palces they recommend. I buy a guidebook to learn what's good and what's not. But this book doesn't give that. It just lists the same information anyone can find on the internet or in tourist brochures. I want to know if the rooms are big, if they're clean, where they are in relation to local attractions. None of this information is given.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Northern Woods Canoeists
There's really only two things worth doing in Minnesota: One, canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Spring, Summer, and Fall; Two, THINKING about canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Winter. For the latter, this book is the gateway to paradise.Sevareid and Port have the true spirit of adventurers, the love-bug for the North Woods and her bevy of streams, rivers, and lakes, and Sevareid effectively tells his now-classic tale of how he and his friend drank deeply of all her treasures--complete with the axiomatic mistakes, mishaps, surfiet of discomfitures, and, alas, irresistible beauty that she provides to all who avail themselves of her wonders.Like St. Augustine, let us "Take up and read."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Insanity and Necessity of Adventure
Walter Port and (Arnold) Eric Sevareid took an amazing trip that they started by skipping some of their high school finals so they could get the boat they could afford. Though the project appeared to have been Port's pet, it was Sevareid who came up with the way to fund it: writing about it for the Minneapolis Star. It was clear that once the project began both of them were truly enthralled by it and could not be put off. The tale is told simply, but with a clear affection for all of the people who helped them try to reach their goal, even though few of the people who helped were confident that these young men could make it or were even very encouraging.
4-0 out of 5 stars canoeing with the cree
I thought that this book was a great wiild life adventure. It's about two boys going aginst their odds in a canoeing trip from St. Paul Minneapolis all the way to the Hudson Bay. Nobody thinks that they will make it. The two young boys come close to death many times. They almost get lost and find their way thanks to many kind people that help them overcome the impossible and they make it. They encounter Indians and some very nice people, and this makes their trip much easier even though they really struggle through all those miles. That's why I think this book was a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and helpful :-)
These books are always fantastic. They are choc-full of good information and it's so handy and useful.Inside, it talks about all the top 10 things in different sections. For example, the top 10 hotels, restaurants, shops etc.I also really love all the beautiful colour pages. Some guide books use black and whites etc, but these guys always make the city in question look stunning.Obviously this book is merely a small guide with only a certain amount of information - if you want a lot more depth, you have to get their full bigger books (which are also great). But for someone with a bit of knowledge already about a particular place, this is just a top up of info that comes in real handy.I highly recommend this book (especially since it is dealing with two cities instead of concentrating on only one).A good guide to two beautiful cities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable DRIVING Guide to the Highway
Not sure why the last reviewer bought a driving guide instead of a hiking guide, but I found this book to be incredibly helpful and entertaining. It contained the right balance of text with history and don't-miss places to visit for each community, along with listings of restaurants and places to stay. She tell you the miles (and kilometers) between major towns and includes lots of great pictures. Highly recommended for preparing for the trip, and a great resource once you're on the road.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ofnovaluetome
I will be driving to Alaska this summer with my dog and I wanted guidance on local parks on the way where we could take breaks and go hiking.I purchased the book since it claims to provide information about hiking trails. No such thing; I found nothing of any value to me and returned it.In fact, if you delete the pictures and the lists of motels and restaurants... there would be little left to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ideal guide for anyone traveling the Alaskan Highway
The World-Famous Alaska Highway is the ideal guide for anyone traveling up and down the Alaskan Highway. 3-0 out of 5 stars good, but could've been much better
i picked this book out of the ones at the bookstore b/c i liked the look of it: good number of pictures, good maps (inc. a map of the metro which most other books didn't seem to have), good info. -however-, a huge drawback to this book is its poor organization. if you're looking at one of the street maps in the book, the landmarks, etc. aren't marked by page number, so you have to look up the landmark in the index (which they have separated into food, accomodations, sites instead of all together, which proved to be very annoying), and then flip back to the page in the book. also, the book is organized again according to categories (food, sites, shopping, etc.) instead of by area, so if you're trying to build a list of things to do in one part of the city you have to keep flipping back and forth from the maps to the indices to the book, which is a huge effort that could've been fixed w/ better planning. this is really too bad, b/c o/w it has a lot of good info. next time i'm def. getting a book by a diff. company.

5-0 out of 5 stars another good Lonely Planet guidebook
I used this guidebook while visiting Montreal in summer 2001 and had no problems at all.As to be expected from Lonely Planet, the color maps at the back are great and the three walking tours really give you a feel for the city. The restaurant list was excellent, especially an extended section on Montreal's famous bagels. There was a large chapter on excursions from Montreal, which included Ottawa, Quebec City and the Laurentian mountains among other places. All the standard Lonely Planet bits on history, culture, arts and religion were very informing; best was the little section on Canadian French where I learned to say "y'est quelle heure" instead of "quelle heure est-il."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for tourism and more
Whether you are planning to visit Vancouver as a tourist, or you are doing preliminary research about it as a potential permanent destination later in your life, Lonely Planet Vancouver sums it all up nicely for you. The first few pages do a great job of giving the newcomer a birdseye view of the city's composition, lifestyle, culture, etc. The book moves on to cover other aspects from dining to outdoors activities and much more in a detailed yet not overwhelming way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version - A great improvement
I read reviews of the last version and the Lonely Planet people have really taken on board the feedback people gave. Its easy to read, VERY up to date and has some great additions. A great top 10 things to do in Vancouver, it details the top restaurants, good summaries of local areas etc. Its a brilliant overview and now we have our trip all maped out! Its well laid out and the use of color is helpful too. One of the best city guides I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unorganized
The book contains a lot of information for sure. The thing is for a first time visitor it does not really provide a big help. Which things are a must to see? The book does not say. Instead the reader is forced to read each every section of the book because the book is divided into sections, each covering a part of the city.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! -- A Must Read
The other reviewers say it all -- except for the guy who thought it was a novel! What makes this book memorable is the writing. Mercer is clearly an experienced professional writer and he knows how to bring Paris, Shakespeare and Company, and his own life and generation into clear and interesting focus (not an easy job). I would have picked a more descriptive title, but no matter. This book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Paris, books and bookshops, and the restless bohemian life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this down!
I read this book in one sitting, although it had the unfortunate title it was given in the UK, Books, Baguettes and Bedbugs.I thought that a rather frivolous name for a book in which the author revealed a lot of himself, both good and bad.I cared about all of the characters, most of all the author and as each page turned, was hoping for good outcomes for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulate Adventurer
Who was it who said, "less is more"? That's one truth that stands out in Jonathan Waterman's "Artic Crossing" - a epical solo trip of the Northwest Passage done without fanfare, without oodles of sponsorship dough. I liked the author's cool, understated writing style, the wry observations about his sufferings and about the Inuits. No hyperbole, none of self-inflation that is so common in adventure writing, this book is truly believable. A wonderful read.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3rd book more chick-lit, but still good
Sisterchicks in Sombreros by Robin Jones Gunn is the 3rd installment in this series. One of the great things about this series is that the stories really aren't related so you can read them in any order and not miss anything, but I enjoyed the reference to book #2 in this one.Melanie and Joanne are sisters who have lost touch with each other and in some ways themselves until their uncle leaves them beachfront property in Mexico that they must visit in order to inherit. The trip takes them on a cruise ship, driving across Baja, and into more scrapes than they ever thought they could handle. The message of the book is surrender.Surrender to God, surrender control, and surrender our expectations in order to really fully experience life. The message is powerful, and I really enjoyed the read, but I felt this book was more chick-lit (no pun intended) than the previous two which had deeper themes. It's still a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Sisterchicks!
I love all the sisterchick books. I hope i have adventures like that when i turn into my 40's. (although that won't be for another 20 years or so!).
5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
I loved this book. Took me about three hours to read from beginning to end! I couldn't put it down and you won't either! The story is a great one, of two sisters who have inheritated a beach front property in Mexico and go down to sign some bank papers, taking a cruise to get there part away. They have some mishaps which will make you laugh and want to have a robe just like them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Frommer Has a Winner Here
I hate most of the Frommer Travel books. They take the fun out of travel and have very few photos.
