5-0 out of 5 stars awesome!
A friend of mine gave me this atlas for my birthday, which was a thoughtful gesture as I always manage to get lost. The first thing I noticed about the atlas was it was not state by state, which seemed odd to me at first.Once I figured out exactly how the Michelin system worked, it was so easy! This atlas is the best!Gone are the days when I run out of state and then have to pull over to find what page the next state begins on, then find where my road continues on in that state, etc...Now, I just flip to the page the little arrows tell me to go to and my road begins where it left off on the other page.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Atlas Money Can Buy
I did not think they could top last year's edition, but this is truly the best atlas on the market.I am going to use it this weekend on a weekend family vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!
I purchased Dangerous River: Adventure on the Nahanni to use as research for my latest release, The River, an exciting and terrifying techno-thriller that takes place on the Nahanni River.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at early 20th century wilderness expeditions.
Patterson makes a 200 mile snowshoe trek in 50 below weather to pick upthe mail seem like slightly unusual walk to the post office!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Far North adventure you'll never forget!
"Dangerous River" is one of the finest Far North adventures ever written. R. M. Patterson and his partner Gordon Matthews were the last of a breed of men who tackled the Far North with nothing but stamina, courage, and consummate skill with rifle, pack and canoe. Trapping and searching for gold in the legendary South Nahanni River country in the 1920's, Patterson describes their adventures in language that makes the reader yearn to see one the premier rivers of the world. Patterson's style is laced with wonderfully dry British humor as well as a poet's skill in describing the breathtaking landscapes. You feel as though you're right beside him throughout his adventures and hungering to go there yourself. You can't ask more a writer and his book than that! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensational description!
Nahanni: River of Gold...River of Dreams is an exciting look at the mysterious Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories. Although I have never been to the Nahanni, it holds a special place in my heart and Neil and his books have been invaluable to my research on the Nahanni for my most recent fiction novel -- The River. Thank you, Neil, for all of your help and for helping to paint the picture of a fearsome yet exciting river and a rugged, majestic land of native lore, headless corpses and one of Canada's most sensational landscapes that I one day plan to see for myself. I also recommend Neil Hartling & Peter Jowett's Nahanni River Guide and of course Neil's company 'Nahanni River Adventures' to anyone who plans to travel there.
5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating journey through the Nahanni River

5-0 out of 5 stars Grass Beyond the Mountains
Pan Phillips had the "Pan Phillips International Airport" at his fishing camp beyond Anahim Lake B.C.For several years, we flew into his little airport between 2 lakes.Pan told us some of the same stories that are in this book.Louis Soukup was one of the first pilots to the area.Louis would fly in, any equipment that Pan needed, on the pontoons of his airplane. This book gives the stories as though you were sitting at the feet of the men who were the first settlers in this area of British Colombia. It is really an adventure to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It!
We own the Legacy Ranch high in the mountains of Northeastern Utah. For years we have loved the beauty of the unspoiled wilderness. Nursing newborn elk calves, watching Canadian Lynx outside their lairs, and many other adventures have cast us in the mold of lovers of the wilderness. To read the adventures of true cowboys, who started with nothing else but their "grit" and ended up with lives spent plumbing the depths of fun and hard work was one of the top literary experiences of our lives. This book, far better than the sequels, will be part o four Christmas giving this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing To It!
Nothing to reading it, that is. This is one of the first nonfictions books I've read that I have ever liked. I got interested in it when I saw the TV show 'Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy' and had to read the books. This bookmade me laugh and almost made me cry. The characters are too funny and veryheart-warming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Bad To Say About This Book At All
In a nice pleasant format this guide delivers what it promises, describes what's to be seen, where to go, what to expect, and helps you get around in Portland. Should be a memorable trip. Can't wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO PORTLAND is a wonderful guide to the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area. It describes where the best neighborhoods are, where to find the healthiest foods, and what TV and radio options there are. There are also great recommendations for day trips found here. It would be even better if it described the different shopping malls in more detail, but despite this ommission, it's a wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fat book of facts
I found this book a delightful conglomeration of every fact you might want to know about a city and it's livability. The catagories were population, economy& jobs, Cost of living, Climate, Education, Healthcare, Crime, transportation, Leisure, arts& culture, and quality of life. The charts, tables, and maps kept me in a sense of discovery! The info is really easy to understand and not too abstract. Peter Sander and Bert Sperling, the authors have a great background and created a very flowing publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth: its a good book for most of us
I think this book is uncannily accurate in the way it described many cities with which I am familiar.Must be accurate for the others as well, right? So I would say it is actually very useful.. Anything with a gazillion bits of information will have some errors, but on the whole, trust me, it's a good book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Publisher's Huge Embarassment
This book rates cities by several livability factors, then adds the ratings to determine who's #1 (it's Charlottesville, VA), who's #2 (Santa Fe, NM) . . . all the way down to who's #331 (Laredo, TX), dead last.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping!
I particularly enjoy reading travel books and for me this is one of the best. Yet it is not just a travel book; it is a well-researched commentary on the history and geography of this whole diverse route and it addresses some of the wider environmental issues. It is also a remarkable and amusing account of self-development and determination which filled me with admiration for the writer.
2-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
Long-distance hiking literature is a tough genre: good hikers don't necessarily make good writers, nor do good writers automatically make good hikers. The best of the genre I've found so far is mostly good hikers who are pretty good writers. Natasha Carver, however, is neither.

Editorial Review

In 1903 Leonidas Hubbard set out to cross the Ungava-Labrador Peninsula, and to forge a name for himself as an adventure writer. He took a friend, a guide, a canoe, a ton of equipment, and scads of naive hope. Months later, the friend and guide staggered out of the snow, and Hubbard starved to death in his tent, too weak to attempt the 30-mile trek to safety. And that's just Part I. James West Davidson and John Rugge narrate with simple dignity, making vividly tangible the wretchedness of mosquitoes, the panic of no food, and the rocky tangle of the Labrador wilderness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars S.K. Lapius
This is a great read. There is little written about this turn of the century, "last frontier" of North America where even today natives will tell you that you can't get there from here. The grueling hardship and trajedy are well portrayed - as are the portraits of each individual. It truly takes the 3 books written about this seminal journey and adds information from the diaries and other writings of the various figures involved; and, this is artfully done by shifting voices. The book flows well and holds suspense to a surprising degree even to those who know the eventual outcome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good adventure story
This book tells the story of two expeditions across Labrador. The first took place in 1903 by three men, on which one of them, Leonidas Hubbard, died. Three years later, his wife, Mina, made the same journey successfully. These accounts are well written and make good use of the original journals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying novelistic style
As you can see from other reviews, most people seem to really like this book. I, however, got a few pages in and found I had no use for it, even though I generally go for just this sort of story. The authors of "Great Heart" use a novelistic narrative style, filling in from their imagination all manner of little details that they obviously could have no way of knowing. I'm apparently enough of a purist that I want my narratives based on reliable source material, not imagination. When an author begins to fictionalize, how can one ever know where the boundary between fact and fiction lies? This doesn't seem to have bothered most of the reviewers, but you might want to stay away from the book if you're similarly picky. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down
I have used Lonely Planet travel guides for years.Yet, I am sorry to say that this one is a real let down. The lay out is not user friendly. The print styles are very difficult to read. The book is not directed to the outdoors person as was the hallmark of the series.I was throughly dissappointed in this guide. The Moon guide is a vastly superior guide to this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars great all around bk
maybe b/c we're hikers, we wish there was even more info on hiking in these parks! but the hiking info in the bks we thought very helpful. we thought the bk did a great job hitting all different tourists' needs. we especially appreciated all the little charts of "must see's," the basic info (post offices, laundry, etc.), the many well-laid out maps, etc.
1-0 out of 5 stars For Hikers Only
I own and use several Lonely Planet Guides. I have come to trust these books as thorough, authoritative and helpful in planning and implementing trips. The Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks book is an exception and meets none of these criteria unless you sole focus is hiking. This book is for hikers and has little information for others. Furthermore, of the 280 pages of actual information, only 57 pages are devoted to Glacier National Park. Information concerning lodging, restaurants and other activities such as cycling is sparse. The few maps that are included detail mainly hiking trails. If this book had been titled A Hikers Guide, I would highly recommended it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hometown Guide
The Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition will be out soon, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Postively THE best guide out there!
I cannot rave enough about this book. I wandered into a gift shop in Jasper searching for a geological map, but no one knew what that was (I was offered topographic maps by the staff.) Finally, several gift shops later someone suggested this guide. I initially hesitated, since it was more then I had planned to spend. All I wanted was a brief outline of local geology, and I got so much more!
5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive all-in-one guidebook
The third printing of the second edition has been updated for 2003. This book is the definitive all-in-one guidebook to the Canadian Rockies. It can replace a flower guide, a plant guide, an animal guide, an insect guide, a bird guide, a fish guide, a geology guide, a history book, a trail guide and even a road map! It is divided into sections for each of these topics and is well illustrated with colour photos and drawings. It is the most comprehensive and useful guide to the Rockies that I have encountered and I have lived here for over 25 years. If you are only buying one guidebook to the Rockies make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper in Canada!
An excellent, broadranging book that includes anything and everything about the Canadian Rockies. One suggestion, however, buy the book in Canada. It's available in any regular bookstore up there for $35 Can,which is about $24 US. ... Read more
