5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional atlas
If you are planning a trip to Nova Scotia, start here. This truly excellent atlas has topo features, cities and towns, roads, and what are probably no more than paths or tracks. It contains about 90 individual maps covering all of Nova Scotia, more than you ever wanted to know. Never having visited the Maritimes, I cannot attest to its accuracy, but it gives every appearance of being a superbly useful set of maps, professionally and carefully prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone travelling within Nova Scotia, Canada
I bought this book in Toronto, Ontario in preparation for my move to Wolfville, Nova Scotia.I am an avid naturalist and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, biking, Nordic skiing, canoeing), as well as an explorer of old roads and villages, so I required a detailed set of maps that would let me discover my new home province.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But The Other Maps Are Better
This map is a good map for those people (like me) who are addicted to Pratchett. Like the others, it helps so much with the visualisation of the places of the book (hubwise, rimwise - it all gets blurred after awhile). However, the map's only negative aspect was that it was a very large mapwith only a bit of detail here and there - Everything looked a bit spacedout. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Good for the listings, not for the "in-depth" coverage
I was quite disappointed by this Frommer's, I have used their series on numerous trips abroad and have found them quite informative. Being from Montreal, I found the initial section on Quebec history and culture very inaccurate and biased against the French-speaking majority. Now I question the accuracy of all the cultural information I read in the other books I bought. I give it 4 stars for the section on what "to do" and 1 star on the section aiming at educating readers on the culture and history of the place they are going to visit. The books recommended will probably give the reader an even more negative view of the French majority, none of which are written by the latter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great help to those wishing to live in sunny/freezing Canada
This book has proved to be an invaluable source of information about living in Canada (I split my time between Ontario and London). It covers everything you could wish to know, from the education system to buying a house, and from buying a car to the tax system. There's also stacks of information about Canada's vibrant entertainment scene and the great outdoors (of which there's a huge amount!). I can't quite understand Damian's review - the book's excellent.
1-0 out of 5 stars Content far too general to be of any real use
I bought this book as I was moving to Canada to take up a research job in a university in Ontario. I had hoped that it would guide me through some of the pitfalls associated with moving to a new country. I read it from cover to cover before I left Ireland and when I arrived, I found 99% of the information it provides is completely unnecessary. It provides no solid information for setting up health care, doing taxes, or how Canada is structured and what you can expect in terms of bureaucracy, be it in a bank, government office or just the workplace. For eg, the note in the book to bring bank references, my bank here didn't even look at them, didn't want to even. The information it does provide is useful only if you haven't worked before or you've been unconscious for the last 10 years. Waste of money!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic journals of a tough breed, lifestyle and adventure
I own originals of Hobson's three books and re-read them every few years. His ability to vividly portray the life that he and The Top Hand and later Mrs. Hobson had in the interior of British Columbia is to have been there. It is hard in today's comfortable way of life to envision the situationsand dangers that were simply a part of how it was back then. Having grownup in the mountains of the U.S. West, I can only marvel at the abilities ofthese adventuresome pioneers in the cattle country of B.C. To have met RichHobson was of great interest to me... I simply waited too long and he hadpassed away. The travels and travails through Hobson's life would make anawsome story for a movie. Note: Make sure you read the three books insequence... and enjoy! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read while traveling
This book had several small errors in text and maps, it was not fun looking for the hotel carrying your luggage around. Also the book is divided into unlogical sections, so you'll never find the info you are looking for unless you remember where it was mentioned. We bought it because there was also a short part about Whistler. That was also not that informative, nothing about the slopes or skiing. The book gives you basic details (except I could not find Vancouvers population) in a bit confusing manner, but nothing extra. It also has no pictures, what makes it a bit uninteresting. The layout and fonts are boring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A perfect travel companion
Unlike alot of travel books this one is laid out more like a novel with more explanations and full descriptions. This can get a little confusing if you need to find something in a hurry but it certainly provides you with more information. I visited Vancouver back in August for 5 days, so decided to buy the book and be prepared before hand. The restaurent section is superb.I found various small resaurants that felt untouched by any tourist. I felt like a local after being there only a few days. The only thing it lacks is more photos and nice paper stock. I also bought the lonely planet Vancouver book, and each had there own qualities. If the two books were combined it would make for an unbeatable guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recommendations no maps
The Best Places books are outstanding for recommending the best sites to see and I particularly like the restaurant reviews. The hole in these books are the lack of maps. There's a double sided fold out map at the back of the book but that's it.There are no neighborhood maps. The books should do more to help me find a restaurant in a town I don't know than just list the address.Until they figure out maps, you'll need a streetwise map to go hand in hand with this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and Well-Organized
We just came back from a trip to Vancouver and Victoria and had a very relaxing and rewarding experience with the help of this book. The portion relating to Vancouver was great with a helpful discussion of navigating your way around the city and its various neighborhoods. The restaurant/cafe recommendations were very helpful, and we thought, quite on the mark.Lodging recommendations were also on the money (even though we weren't thrilled with what we ended up with, but based on what else was available at that level of rating, the book's rating seemed to be right on). Finally, the section on Victoria and Whistler were especially helpful given our quick 'sojourns' to these areas.Oh yeah, we did a quick cross-reference of the ratings in this book with Zagat's and they were pretty much in line with each other. There were also lovely discussions in general about shopping in Vancouver (quite plentiful) as well as the parks and the top 20 attractions.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy
I used this to plan pur first trip to Toronto.Yes, you can look online for stuff to do, but there's so much to do there that its overwhelming. This small and concise book does a great job of breaking down the best things to do, and made planning the trip much easier than doing it online. It also caters to all travlers; whether you're a big spender or a "budget" traveler (i.e. cheapskate), this breaks down everything nice and simply. Also included are maps, phone numbers and websites.Very handy book, and the next city I travel to I will definitely pick another one of these up.It is worth the very reasonable price to eliminate half the stress of planning a trip to a new city. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for some people
Recently I brought a 36 foot boat from Whitby, Ontario through the Canal System, down the Hudson, through Hell Gate to Long Island Sound.I thought this book would be my bible, but found almost no useful information.Thebook is written entirely from the perspective of going up river, and isvery hard to follow if you're going down.Much of the information isalready out of date - several times when we tried to follow its advise, themarina or docking area it decribed was non-existent.Other facilities areignored. For example, Whitby, which has two large marinas was notmentioned. The discussion of going the through locks was rather limited, though probably helpful to the small boat owner. There were very fewpictures - certainly not enough to show what the canals are like. Also, the book stopped (actually started) at the Battery without mention of HellGate, which must be of interest to a significant number of readers. Isuppose this book would be helpful to a power boater looking for the nextrestaurant, but it was a major disappointment to me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Coupland's odd humor and appreciation for his country blend well
You don't read Coupland for content, and you certainly don't read him to understand where he is coming from.Coupland is best read as a collection of highly eclectic - and in this case, almost loving - insights of a country he knows well.Like his previous book on Canada and the one on Vancouver, all of these stand as weird, human, insightful snippets of Canadian life. Its like a large relish tray - good snippets, but not all toyour personal taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great little book
My familiarity with coupland prior to Souvenir of Canada primarily stemmed from Generation X and his City of Glass (his loveletter to Vancouver).Unlike his novel, Souvenir is utterly sentimental--even when seemingly critical. Not being Canadian, yet quite interested in Canadiana, I found Souvenir to be interesting on several levels, and I found myself not only enriching my knowledge of Canada, but also reflecting more deeply on the area in which I grew up--not so much America as a whole, which is a point inferred in the book as well. It's style makes it vastly readable: a series of photographs with relatively short passages with varying degrees of topic digression, yet all quite appropriate.I have often found myself picking Souvenir (and Souvenir 2) up again and again, thumbing through and randomly reading sections.I don't know what it is, but Coupland seems to have the knack for inviting the reader into a world and being a great host while you're there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Clearly Canadian (though we're not alike!)
This collection of imagery and musings from Famous Canadian Writer Douglas Coupland didn't always strike a chord with me.I'm from a different part of the country, with different history and experiences, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient, but needs to be updated
I purchased this in 2003 for a trip later that year. I had no problems getting around, but after multiple trips to the city I would recommend buying a map once you're in the city. I spotted a minor error with the subway listings, and they list a non-existent green space in the Annex neighborhood...I askeda passerby and they had no idea where it could be! The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has free, to-date-maps that are available in all the stations with agents. So do some booths at Pearson Airport. Still, the foldable, waterproof format is super-convenient. Just remember to pick up a more current map and carry the Streetwise one when you're walking around for general reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great, great
So easy to use! Although orienting yourself with North was a little challenging at 1st. The fact that the map is laminated is a definite plus! This is something I can use over and over again, I even gave one as a gift to a friend who lives in Toronto and they love it as well!
4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this the last time I visited Hogtown...
... you can bet I'll have it with me when I go back. The usual Streetwise quality is evident in this map; the only quibble I have with it is the rather odd orientation. Thanks to the fact that all Streetwise have to fit into their standard rectangle shape, and the somewhat unusual shape of Toronto means that in order to fit it in, it has to be oriented with north nowhere near "up".Once you get used to that, though, you have a dandy, sturdy map of Toronto, including the TTC subway lines. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great product
you have a great product, it just was not the size we wanted so we returned it.thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful at all.
I bought this for my husband who is going on a 3 week driving vacation with our children this summer. I thought the smaller size and spiral binding would be convenient. But, the maps are so small they are useless. And only the main roads are on themap. I had to go to Wal-mart and get the larger one (staple binding). It has great maps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trying to be everything, it accomplishes little.
While planning a 4,300 mile driving route around the U.S. to visit friends, I purchased the Rand McNally Road Atlas 2006.I selected it because the wire bound version promised a method of selecting pages that could be left open for quick reference.I soon discovered that the small pages (map size 7 inches by 8 1/2 inches) were too small to display any but interstate and major highways.Too locate local or county roads, I had to purchase the individual state maps at service stations for about five dollars each.I visited the following cities in the order presented.Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sioux City, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Branson, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas, Padre Island, Texas, El Paso, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Alimosa, Colorado, Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Rapid City, South Dakota. There is simply not enough information on these maps to be of any help if you might wander off the major highways.I actually became lost entering Denver because the highway that I was on from Alimosa, Colorado was not shown entering Denver on the Denver city map.
