5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly What Does Eh Mean?
I have lived outside of the U.S. for six years with the past two in Canada thus I had about the right amount of distance from everyday life in the U.S. and enough daily interaction in Canada to find this book hilarious.Page after page I keep laughing out loud.I kept finding my self blurting out things like "exactly" and "I have seen that too".This author has nailed the North American male and has a very clear view of the differences between the States and Canada. If you are a resident of either country you will find this book full of humor and uncanny observations that ring true to anyone with an eye to individual behavior.I would have no hesitation in recommending the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best restaurant travel book out there
This is without a doubt, the best investment I've ever made for travel.I can't tell you how great it was to not have to worry about where to eat while traveling alone in Montreal.4 out of the 4 restaurants I went to were stellar.I didn't try any more because one of the restaurants I ended up going back to 2 moretimes and the B&B I was staying at served HUGE breakfasts, so I only ever had to worry about dinner. This book was invaluable.I urge anyone going to Montreal, Toronto or New York City to grab a copy of this book to help them navigate through the often difficult process of finding good, clean food for a reasonable price in a city they are visiting.Everything was exactly as stated in the book.No meal was over $15.Every restaurant was clean and the staff courteous. Also, the store fronts were unassuming so the idea that I could've found these on my own is ridiculous. This book is worth every penny.5 Stars!!Thank you Cheap Thrills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this book and a map is all you need
I used this book (4th edition) a few years ago on a road trip from Halifax, NS to Saint George, NB. This book and a road map were very helpful in getting around the region and getting a sense of the history and background of the area.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
We used this guide for an individual trip (not a group tour)to Nova Scotia. Don't be misled by the title--it's a great book for mainstream tourists, focusing on the history and culture and sites, giving a lot more background than your standard Frommer's guide for example. At the end of each chapter there's a very limited list of hotels and restaurants, so you'll also want one of the standards--Frommer's for example, as a complement. Also, the Nova Scotia Tourism authority has GREAT free material and maps which are yours for the asking on their website. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very Helpful
I was somewhat disappointed as only about one thrird of this little book is Information about trains. The other part is a general travelguide.2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Only one third of it is actual information about train-travel. Most of it is a general travelguide with informations about the cities etc.5-0 out of 5 stars THE Canadian rail book!!
This is THE ultimate canadian rail travel book.I would even recommend this book for those driving through Canada. The author gives advise (very detailed) on where to eat, sleep, sight-see, and so on.I urge everyone to find this book at your local bookstore and thumb through it.Then buy it here.At the end of the book it even guides you along the train journey by listing the significant sights along the way (such as....at Mile marker 26 towards the south, you'll see the cemetary containing 145 victims of the Titanic).Best of all, it displays all of the VIA Rail timetables and how many calendar days each leg of the trip takes. This is especially useful for those on the CANRAIL pass package.YOu can literaly plan your entire itinerary from this single book. The size allows you to easily stow it in a small camera bag or purse. The PERFECT Canadian travel book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the PBS program
After watching the PBS series in July, I decided to buy the book. (I already own Great Lodges of the National Parks.) Not only are all of the spots in the series here, but MANY more. They all have wonderful photos and even better stories. It was touching to hear once more about Ken Jones (the first show of the series is in his memory).

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll head to Canada after reading this book
Anyone who loves spectacular mountain scenery and historic lodges should grab this book! Not only does the book contain the well-known spots (Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise and Jasper Park Lodge) but there's an entire section on lodges you can ONLY hike or ride horseback to. Barnes other books all feature American lodges, so this trip into the Canadian Rockies is a special visual treat full of history and plenty of sentiment. There are fold-out pages for real panoramic shots and a neat little guide in the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table Book for Lodge Lovers
Great pictures, informative text, and a tempting vacation guide (the book comes with a pocket guide showing prices, phone numbers, directions, photography tips, and other information).Describes the architectural and cultural evolution of the greatest lodges in Canada - most are those lodges built by the railways or by early 20th century mountaineers. All your guests will pick it up. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement
Most of the self teaching material out there is books.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not as good as others I've used
Bought this to brush up on my French, which I haven't used for 15 yrs before a trip this fall.Is very good on pronunciations, but can be confusing.Goes through the French saying before translating in English. It seems backwards to me, but otherwise is a good product.

5-0 out of 5 stars this fills a gap
I liked this package for what it is. Good practice in comprehension. The first CD really does a good job of teaching pronunciation. It goes through vowels, consonants, and combinations. Lots of examples are given. Then, the course goes through all basic vocabulary: numbers, days of the week, weather... You get to listen to conversations and then answer questions about what you understood. I think there is much gained when you are unable to cheat by reading a conversation on a page. This package works especially well for people already familiar with French and those who have a french text lacking an audio component. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed information concerning orchid biology, ecology, history, and conservation for nature lovers and gardeners alike
Now in paperback for the first time, Wild Orchids Across North America: A Botanical Travelogue is offers detailed information concerning orchid biology, ecology, history, and conservation for nature lovers and gardeners alike. Full-color photographs throughout reveal the beauty of these wonderful flowers, making Wild Orchids Across North America a stunning visual treasury as well as a repository of information on all things orchid. The emotion that author and North American Native Orchid Alliance founding member Philip E. Keenan has for these captivating blossoms shows through in his exquisite attention to detail. Highly recommended especially for orchid lovers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I have had the rare satisfaction of experiencing a manuscript about orchids that would be the envy of any writer on any subject, and a pictoral feast that certainly would put Keenan right up there as the Ansel Adams oforchids when it comes to photography. And somewhere up there Rachel Carsonmust be smiling down and thinking ,"Well done Mr. Keenan", for, like Carson, Keenan has great concern for our voyage through time on ourspaceship earth and, in a most disarming manner, alerts us to ourecological responsibilities without being overbearing about it.This is notjust about orchids - it's about life.

Memoirs and travelogues have long been a popular vehicle for sharing personal experiences on a wide variety of subjects. Most natural history tomes of this type are verygeneral and have little specific information to generate vivid images forthe reader. Not so with Philip Keenan's assemblage of more than twodecades of traveling throughout most of North America in search of many ofthe wild orchids of that continent.Read more

David McFadden's book introduces the reader to Newfoundland in a warm, humorous and personal way. This was one of the first books I read to research a trip to Newfoundland.
