Editorial Review

Readers won't be bored drinking in the adventures of Laurie Gough. They may be alarmed, they may be annoyed, and they will probably be amazed as they read about the sojourns of this headstrong lone traveler who throws herself into foreign cultures with the subtlety and shyness of Courtney Love. But ennui probably will not factor in when one cracks open Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I felt like I was there with her.
I found the book fascinating because it actually painted a picture of the things Laurie saw and her feelings about them.I've read many travel books that sound just like the journals I keep on my trips - first we went here, then we went there.... No passion or true flavor of the place. This one was different.I felt like I was living the trip vicariously and savored every page of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased
A great travel book. At such a young age, Laurie has undertaken several quite unusual journeys, exploring the globe, its peoples, andherself. Upon coming home, she retreated to a cabin in the north woods to write about her travels. Now, thanks to Laurie's book, we can experience adventures of the human spirit from our favorite chair. A delightful read indeed!
5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB WRITING, WONDERFUL ADVENTURE!!
I just finished reading this fabulous book which so many book clubs seem to be reading and now I understand why. This is the most interesting and best written travel book I've read since Paul Thereoux.(Although I just plain like Laurie Gough much better as a person than I do him, although being a nice person perhaps isn't terribly important to Thereoux.)Gough's book soars with passion, intrigue and adventure. It's lyrical, thoughtful and imaginative. My favourite parts were the Fijian characters who Gough so warmly and honestly portrays.I can't wait for new writings from this talented and open, humorous, free spirit of the road.I can't recommend this book highly enough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I simply and totally LOVED this book
Very well written, and fascinating. The author gives the reader an 'insider' view of the circus world; this includes an objective and respectful portrayal of the brave and talented people.I appreciated the honest perspectives, i.e., hearing 'the other side of the story' in terms of animal rights. It is a beautiful, touching, absolutely fantastic story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read
I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this book, from the subject matter to the personality of the author to the quality of the writing, which is excellent. At times, it reads as luridly and poetically as a novel. If you are enamored of the circus, as I am, and would like to run away with one for a while--even if only in your imagination--this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific read, by turns hilarious and poignant
For a month in spring 1997, Wilkins traveled with the Great Wallenda Circus,a gritty group of seasoned circus vets, on a trip through a remote stretch of Canada.Facing such obstacles as unyielding immigrationregulations (for both animals and performers), unprecedented flooding withunseasonable temperatures, and fierce competition from another circus, theWallenda performers (led by Karl's grandson, Ricky Wallenda) show theirmerit as troupers in the truest sense of the word.Interspersed withdescriptions of the circus's performances in the often-chilly and poorlylit hockey venues of Manitoba are the stories of the circus's performersand crew, each of which reveals a different facet of the daily dangers ofcircus life: unpredictable (and sometimes in-bred) tigers, vendetta-holdingelephants, unstable rigging for aerial acts, and the omnipresent fatiguethat can make a performer misstep minutely, but fatally.Beyond thesedangers, however, is another threat to the circus's performers, whichWilkins chronicles beautifully and movingly:the decline and fall of thecircus in America. It's a casualty with complex causation, including thesenescence of Shriners (who sponsor a large number of American circusperformances), the rise of the animal rights movement, and the effect oftelevision, with its showy tromp l'oeil special effects, on ourexpectations for entertainment. Is watching a 370-pound man put anelderly, blind elephant through a series of slow-moving tricks enough of athrill for audiencesraised on car chases and gunfire?Wilkins thinks so,and after reading this wonderful book, so do I. ... Take a vacation and blend in some active sports or activities and you have an 'adventure getaway' of the type Ulysses Press specializes in - and one out of the ordinary, as its 'Hidden' series covers. Websites, walking tours, scenic drives, and both weekend and extended getaways are covered in Hidden British Columbia, which specializes in byways and lesser-known attractions and which deserves ongoing recommendation as a top travel choice for the region. From Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, to tiny cafes, Hidden British Columbia provides a quality travel experience to any heading to the region, and makes for a perfect tote as well as a at-home planner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource we had with us!
This book was wonderful -- we did a trip along the Yellowhead using it to direct us to lodging and the "hidden" best places -- and the only time we went wrong on our trip was when we didn't consult the book. We're planning another trip this year, because we didn't get to all the places the book directed us to.2-0 out of 5 stars Some things should remain hidden
We just returned from a trip to BC where we used this book in conjunction with others. Some of the information is useful, but time and time again we were disappointed, especially in the area of lodging.Several B&Bs and Lodges that were given very positive reviews were either very ordinary, motelish or were just plain dreadful. There is a good reason why these are hidden, and should remain so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide!
This travel guide was extremely helpful on my recent visit to Quebec City and the Saguenay region. We used many of the suggestions for restaurants and lodging and all were excellent. The author encourages the reader to try "whale watching" from the shoreline near Tadoussac and I was doubtful, but it's true - we saw whales from shore! My traveling companions originally thought that guidebooks were a waste of money, but they commented several times during our trip on how accurate and informative this guide was.

4-0 out of 5 stars The reason why I buy Lonely planet Guides
Last year I had a conference/holiday trip to Quebec (City). I bought this guide and it made my life so much easier over there. The detailed maps of both Quebec City and the Quebec Region are a big help.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect guide to Quebec

There's no doubt about it, this is the best travel guide I have ever used.I have visited seven European cities (London, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, Zurich, Barcelona) over the course of three separate vacations.Through my local library, I've had the opportunity to read dozens of different travel guides.I wish I had found the AAA Spiral Guides sooner.I bought the AAA Spiral Guide to Barcelona before my trip to Barcelona last month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent geographic study
Robert T. Bone's Regional Geography of Canada is a must for anyone who is interested in Canadian history or geography in general. It is very well organized and comprehensive. This book goes beyond what most of us think of when we hear the word "geography". It is not a book about maps, it is a book about how people live in Canada, why they live where they do, how their lives have impacted the land, and how the land has impacted their lives. It is a very interesting study and will make you think about how your own life is impacted by the environment around you... where ever you are! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For a Select Audience
I have several Moon Handbooks, and they are meant for backpackers and hikers. For that group, these Guides are very good. For others, like me, older and now reasonably handicapped, other guides are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks Alberta
Moon Handbooks Alberta Including Banff, Jasper, and the Canadian Rockies is the ultimate overview for traveling within Alberta, Canada. This book contains 467 pages of travel information but is still small enough to tuck in a backpack for easy reference. Furthermore, this book has plenty of fairly detailed maps, complete with accurate distance scales, for easy travel planning or reference while you travel.
