4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive collection from a new star of Hard SF
Canada has been the source of a great deal of intriguing SF over the past decade or so, much of it at least moderately "hard SF." One of the most rigorously "hard SF" writers to come out of this "Canadian Renaissance" is Karl Schroeder, author of the impressive novels Ventus, Permanence, and Lady of Mazes. Now Schroeder has published his first story collection, The Engine of Recall.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Short Story Collection
I am not sure why I originally ordered this book from Amazon. I had never read Karl Schroeder before and I normally steer clear of short story collections. I have always preferred novels to story collections, probably because a good short story often leaves you wanting more. Despite my mystification on why I got this book let me emphatically say that I am glad I did so!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sid Marty:A great read
I've just discovered the books of Sid Marty this year and I'm finding anything written by this gifted author is simply astonishing. What a rare combination-- what we have here is a park ranger with an extraordinary insight into human behavior who also has an ability to record his reflections with uncommon talent. Leaning on the Wind is spellbinding.I could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raw images from the mouth of the Mountain Man
From the warmth of your bedroom to the clarity of a foothill on a February morning, Leaning on the Wind takes you to places you didn't think existed. Like going on a trip with a serene uncle and reading his life like a carpet slowly unrolling in front of you.You are there with him and above it looking at his memories. This novel is neither myth and only cousin to fact; it is a folk story of the every day. In the middle east, Persian weavers insert a flaw in the pattern of their rugs, because only God is perfect.Marty, too, puts some extra stitches in his weaving and occasionally waxes tedious in his comment on the every day. But every insight requires a little bit of time and energy. It is a picture of both the beauty and sorrow in Canada. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming true story of an adventurous family.
With grace and humor, Sally Lesh deftly describes the true tale of a n east coast family who gives it all up to pursue authentic, frontier living in the wilds of Alaska. The author reflects with sharp wit on the joys and tribulations of traveling across country with 8 children in a school bus -- never giving up her 5:00 cocktail -- in pursuit of their dream of starting a new life in Alaska. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Alone Across the Artic
Excellent true story, well told with many explanations so the reader understands what is going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT, great story!
This is a great book that will inspire you to be a stronger, more adventursome person than you might otherwise be. I like the way the author incorporates diary entries from her expedition, and also the text inserts including helpful background information that might otherwise have bogged down the flow of the story. I bought both this (the version for adults or teens) and the companion book, Big Enough Anna, which tells the same story in a manner appropriate for young children. Both are fantastic, and I plan to give copies to friends as gifts. Way to go, Pam Flowers!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down
I needed something to read during the benchmarks, so I ran to the library during passing time and grabbed the first book I could find on mushing (I'm an addicted musher). I had a hard time putting it down. The pictures were wonderful, and the story was great. It was a pretty fast read, I finished it that day, but I enjoyed it. I've reread it twice since I bought my own copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lonely Land
Its a great book. I havent paddled the Churchhill River yet, but rivers closeby, and you still find the wilderness and the loneliness that Sig Olson describes. After reading this book and others by Sig Olson I just want to go out paddling and enjoy the wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read
I was looking on information on old canoe routes of the voyageurs and I came upon this book. It tells the experiences of Olson, a famous naturalist of the 50's and 60's, and 5 of his friends, as they paddle three wood andcanvas canoes down 500 miles of the Churchhill River in Saskatchewan in1960. Olson describes the setting and experience so completely, includingdiary entries of famous fur trappers who traveled the same route, that Ihave thought of nothing else but going to see the country he describes, theCanadian Shield of Northern Saskatchewan. It is a different place now thanit was 40 years ago, less lonely I imagine, but still something I must do.I would recommend this book to anyone who longs to experience this land,North America, before it became overpopulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I was there!
After I read this book I had a burning desire to visit the Canadian Shield and paddle a wood and canvas canoe on the Churchill River.I only wish I could have done it in 1960, when this book was written. It is a muchdifferent place today. This is an excellent book about a canoe trip of 500miles by six friends. I only hope I will be as lucky to do such a tripsomeday. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Algonquin without it!
We bought this book last year at the Algonquin Visiters Centre. After reading it from cover to cover we agreed on a four day canoe route for our family. We just got back from that canoe trip. Wow did we have a great time! Without Kevin's book we were clueless about planning our first family canoe trip. After all, Algonquin is 3,000 square miles of wilderness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good!
Okay...I know the title of this book is "Hiking Hot Springs"but so many are left out that could be called "hiking pools."As you are searching for some of the springs in this book...you are passing perfectly fine hot pools.I would like to return this book and get my money back; too much information withheld.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic guide book!
having just returned home from five weeks of exploring central idaho hot springs with this guidebook all i can say is get ready for one of the most beautiful experiences of your life if you follow any of the trails tosprings in this region.being fiarly adept at finding hot springs on my owni know that i could easily have missed several true gems without thisbook.a must have if you are travelling in the northwest and need a place tosoak those road weary bones! i found all the road&trail descriptions tobe right-on for getting to some pretty isolated spots. this, withoutquestion, has proven to be one of the best books for a hot spring&hikingjunkie(that would be me)that i`ve ever encountered! buy the book!goenjoy!thanks evie!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Essential Hike & Hotspring Guide for the Pac/NW
A finely crafted and up to date little hotspring book from a professional writer that has done all of her own research, hiking to the best wild hotsprings in the Pacific Northwest.Unlike some others who curiously omitor give lesser coverage to Idaho (which the cognescenti know has thegreatest concentration of wild hot springs in North America), Evie Littonshows her bonafides. From shorter day hikes through Ancient cedars andGrand Fir out to riverside hot waterfalls and steaming turquoise pools toadventurous multi-day backpacking tours into the deep interior, Evie Lalways trail loops you past a great hotspring.Well deserved soaks, withready highway access to trailheads, for road foot travelers, horse ridersand even weary cross-country motorists with a half-day to invest, amidstunning scenery, where the people are plainly visiting and the realresidents are moose, elk, deer, mountain goat, eagle, beaver, otter, cougarand bear. This book features good driving directions AND even mapcoordinates (!) - right down to the actual USGS topo's and US ForestService sectionals AND where to obtain them.None of the other books areas "right and tight" in getting you in and out as this one.Thisone is a Guide from a guide. It belongs in your bag, so grab your shoesand pack a lunch.I'll be the guy coming down the trail with the big smileon his face and good directions to hotter water. ...
