3-0 out of 5 stars good, but could've been much better
i picked this book out of the ones at the bookstore b/c i liked the look of it: good number of pictures, good maps (inc. a map of the metro which most other books didn't seem to have), good info. -however-, a huge drawback to this book is its poor organization. if you're looking at one of the street maps in the book, the landmarks, etc. aren't marked by page number, so you have to look up the landmark in the index (which they have separated into food, accomodations, sites instead of all together, which proved to be very annoying), and then flip back to the page in the book. also, the book is organized again according to categories (food, sites, shopping, etc.) instead of by area, so if you're trying to build a list of things to do in one part of the city you have to keep flipping back and forth from the maps to the indices to the book, which is a huge effort that could've been fixed w/ better planning. this is really too bad, b/c o/w it has a lot of good info. next time i'm def. getting a book by a diff. company.

5-0 out of 5 stars another good Lonely Planet guidebook
I used this guidebook while visiting Montreal in summer 2001 and had no problems at all.As to be expected from Lonely Planet, the color maps at the back are great and the three walking tours really give you a feel for the city. The restaurant list was excellent, especially an extended section on Montreal's famous bagels. There was a large chapter on excursions from Montreal, which included Ottawa, Quebec City and the Laurentian mountains among other places. All the standard Lonely Planet bits on history, culture, arts and religion were very informing; best was the little section on Canadian French where I learned to say "y'est quelle heure" instead of "quelle heure est-il."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and helpful :-)
These books are always fantastic. They are choc-full of good information and it's so handy and useful.Inside, it talks about all the top 10 things in different sections. For example, the top 10 hotels, restaurants, shops etc.I also really love all the beautiful colour pages. Some guide books use black and whites etc, but these guys always make the city in question look stunning.Obviously this book is merely a small guide with only a certain amount of information - if you want a lot more depth, you have to get their full bigger books (which are also great). But for someone with a bit of knowledge already about a particular place, this is just a top up of info that comes in real handy.I highly recommend this book (especially since it is dealing with two cities instead of concentrating on only one).A good guide to two beautiful cities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall good guide to accompany your trip to Montreal/Quebec
This guide book is filled with colorful pictures and list top-10 tourist spots in Montreal and Quebec, it almost list top-10 tourist spots, dining, shopping, night life etc in different sections of the cities. Overall it's an excellent guide book to accompany one's trip to Monteral/Quebec.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for tourism and more
Whether you are planning to visit Vancouver as a tourist, or you are doing preliminary research about it as a potential permanent destination later in your life, Lonely Planet Vancouver sums it all up nicely for you. The first few pages do a great job of giving the newcomer a birdseye view of the city's composition, lifestyle, culture, etc. The book moves on to cover other aspects from dining to outdoors activities and much more in a detailed yet not overwhelming way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version - A great improvement
I read reviews of the last version and the Lonely Planet people have really taken on board the feedback people gave. Its easy to read, VERY up to date and has some great additions. A great top 10 things to do in Vancouver, it details the top restaurants, good summaries of local areas etc. Its a brilliant overview and now we have our trip all maped out! Its well laid out and the use of color is helpful too. One of the best city guides I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unorganized
The book contains a lot of information for sure. The thing is for a first time visitor it does not really provide a big help. Which things are a must to see? The book does not say. Instead the reader is forced to read each every section of the book because the book is divided into sections, each covering a part of the city.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down
I have used Lonely Planet travel guides for years.Yet, I am sorry to say that this one is a real let down. The lay out is not user friendly. The print styles are very difficult to read. The book is not directed to the outdoors person as was the hallmark of the series.I was throughly dissappointed in this guide. The Moon guide is a vastly superior guide to this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars great all around bk
maybe b/c we're hikers, we wish there was even more info on hiking in these parks! but the hiking info in the bks we thought very helpful. we thought the bk did a great job hitting all different tourists' needs. we especially appreciated all the little charts of "must see's," the basic info (post offices, laundry, etc.), the many well-laid out maps, etc.
1-0 out of 5 stars For Hikers Only
I own and use several Lonely Planet Guides. I have come to trust these books as thorough, authoritative and helpful in planning and implementing trips. The Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks book is an exception and meets none of these criteria unless you sole focus is hiking. This book is for hikers and has little information for others. Furthermore, of the 280 pages of actual information, only 57 pages are devoted to Glacier National Park. Information concerning lodging, restaurants and other activities such as cycling is sparse. The few maps that are included detail mainly hiking trails. If this book had been titled A Hikers Guide, I would highly recommended it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Bad To Say About This Book At All
In a nice pleasant format this guide delivers what it promises, describes what's to be seen, where to go, what to expect, and helps you get around in Portland. Should be a memorable trip. Can't wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO PORTLAND is a wonderful guide to the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area. It describes where the best neighborhoods are, where to find the healthiest foods, and what TV and radio options there are. There are also great recommendations for day trips found here. It would be even better if it described the different shopping malls in more detail, but despite this ommission, it's a wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A perfect travel companion
Unlike alot of travel books this one is laid out more like a novel with more explanations and full descriptions. This can get a little confusing if you need to find something in a hurry but it certainly provides you with more information. I visited Vancouver back in August for 5 days, so decided to buy the book and be prepared before hand. The restaurent section is superb.I found various small resaurants that felt untouched by any tourist. I felt like a local after being there only a few days. The only thing it lacks is more photos and nice paper stock. I also bought the lonely planet Vancouver book, and each had there own qualities. If the two books were combined it would make for an unbeatable guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recommendations no maps
The Best Places books are outstanding for recommending the best sites to see and I particularly like the restaurant reviews. The hole in these books are the lack of maps. There's a double sided fold out map at the back of the book but that's it.There are no neighborhood maps. The books should do more to help me find a restaurant in a town I don't know than just list the address.Until they figure out maps, you'll need a streetwise map to go hand in hand with this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and Well-Organized
We just came back from a trip to Vancouver and Victoria and had a very relaxing and rewarding experience with the help of this book. The portion relating to Vancouver was great with a helpful discussion of navigating your way around the city and its various neighborhoods. The restaurant/cafe recommendations were very helpful, and we thought, quite on the mark.Lodging recommendations were also on the money (even though we weren't thrilled with what we ended up with, but based on what else was available at that level of rating, the book's rating seemed to be right on). Finally, the section on Victoria and Whistler were especially helpful given our quick 'sojourns' to these areas.Oh yeah, we did a quick cross-reference of the ratings in this book with Zagat's and they were pretty much in line with each other. There were also lovely discussions in general about shopping in Vancouver (quite plentiful) as well as the parks and the top 20 attractions.Highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient Guide to Toronto
This book is ideal for a short trip to Toronto or for those who don't care to carry large, bulky books with them on vacation. Most of the information is short, to the point, with a minimum of color commentary. There is asection devoted to the history of the city and references to other booksfor those who want more information. The book is small enough to fit in abackpack or even a coat pocket so it can be carried with you.Probably notideal for an extended stay, but overall helpful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read while traveling
This book had several small errors in text and maps, it was not fun looking for the hotel carrying your luggage around. Also the book is divided into unlogical sections, so you'll never find the info you are looking for unless you remember where it was mentioned. We bought it because there was also a short part about Whistler. That was also not that informative, nothing about the slopes or skiing. The book gives you basic details (except I could not find Vancouvers population) in a bit confusing manner, but nothing extra. It also has no pictures, what makes it a bit uninteresting. The layout and fonts are boring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient, but needs to be updated
I purchased this in 2003 for a trip later that year. I had no problems getting around, but after multiple trips to the city I would recommend buying a map once you're in the city. I spotted a minor error with the subway listings, and they list a non-existent green space in the Annex neighborhood...I askeda passerby and they had no idea where it could be! The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has free, to-date-maps that are available in all the stations with agents. So do some booths at Pearson Airport. Still, the foldable, waterproof format is super-convenient. Just remember to pick up a more current map and carry the Streetwise one when you're walking around for general reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great, great
So easy to use! Although orienting yourself with North was a little challenging at 1st. The fact that the map is laminated is a definite plus! This is something I can use over and over again, I even gave one as a gift to a friend who lives in Toronto and they love it as well!
4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this the last time I visited Hogtown...
... you can bet I'll have it with me when I go back. The usual Streetwise quality is evident in this map; the only quibble I have with it is the rather odd orientation. Thanks to the fact that all Streetwise have to fit into their standard rectangle shape, and the somewhat unusual shape of Toronto means that in order to fit it in, it has to be oriented with north nowhere near "up".Once you get used to that, though, you have a dandy, sturdy map of Toronto, including the TTC subway lines. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Good for the listings, not for the "in-depth" coverage
I was quite disappointed by this Frommer's, I have used their series on numerous trips abroad and have found them quite informative. Being from Montreal, I found the initial section on Quebec history and culture very inaccurate and biased against the French-speaking majority. Now I question the accuracy of all the cultural information I read in the other books I bought. I give it 4 stars for the section on what "to do" and 1 star on the section aiming at educating readers on the culture and history of the place they are going to visit. The books recommended will probably give the reader an even more negative view of the French majority, none of which are written by the latter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy
I used this to plan pur first trip to Toronto.Yes, you can look online for stuff to do, but there's so much to do there that its overwhelming. This small and concise book does a great job of breaking down the best things to do, and made planning the trip much easier than doing it online. It also caters to all travlers; whether you're a big spender or a "budget" traveler (i.e. cheapskate), this breaks down everything nice and simply. Also included are maps, phone numbers and websites.Very handy book, and the next city I travel to I will definitely pick another one of these up.It is worth the very reasonable price to eliminate half the stress of planning a trip to a new city. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Mis- information
We were disappointed in the inaccuracies in the information regarding Quebec City. The listing for the Auberge St. Antoine indicated two levels of parking (valet and self park); in fact the hotel only offers valet parking and for considerably less than listed in the book. The hours for at least one of the tourist attractions were not correct. The biking information does not include the nice trail in Levis accross the St. Lawrence and accessible by ferry (no car required); instead, the book sends you to an island that requires a car and does not have traffic free paths.

3-0 out of 5 stars Traveling to Quebec? Dont forget your guide.
As many Frommers traveling books, this one will help the reader to get along the city and take advantage of his travel. Having this book handy in your backpack will make your walking tours, dinning and staying a truly unforgettable experience. It is amazing how it describes to the detail many places that no other way you would consider visiting. Even though Frommers is a guarantee istelf, consider buying a better city map to get along, since the one in the book is a little confusing and incomplete.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great help in enjoying two wonderful Canadian cities
In preparing for a trip to Montreal and Quebec, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that covered both cities. It was easy to read and findspecific information. The different maps were very helpful while walkingaround both cities -- although I used actual road maps for drivingdirections.Keeping in mind that having two cities means less informationabout each -- I found the information was the right amount to help us makeimportant decisions or ask the right questions when we made reservations. It certainly will help you find the "must see" spots as itprovides recommendations for a one-, two- or three-day visit.I often readthe short description of a site aloud before we visited. We changed ourhotel reservations based on the book.As a result, we saved $10 per night(which more than paid for the book) and got free meals for the children --a huge savings over three days. Bottomline -- a good, easy-to-use book withvaluable information -- especially for first or second time visitors. ... Read more
