5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful but dated
This wonderful quick read is V.S Naipaul's travels from Trinidad, to British Guinea through Suriname and then on to Martinique and Jamaica in the early 1960s.The dated feature makes the read fascinating. Here we see how racial issues have surfaced in Trinidad, where the Urban black population is at variance with the rural indian one.We see this through the eyes of an English educated Indian returning home to a nation he both loves and hates. He remarks att he outfite, the attire and aspirations of the people. In Guinea he meets Mr. Jagan, the Indian Communist leader who Naipaul will return to in his book "The Writer and his World".In Suriname we learn about a dutch colony where race has not been the deciding factor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book to read and reread
'The Middle Passage' is the account of a sunny journey across the Caribbean in 1960-61. During his travelling, Naipaul enjoys the calypso in Trinidad, takes a memorable hiking trip to the Nutchi falls in British Guyana, travels around the picturesque roads of Martinique, enjoys a cool beer in Brazil, and goes to the beaches of Jamaica and Surinam.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide,but w/ a few (inconsequential) inaccuracies
I thought this was a great effort to present the true Bahamas, but unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies that seem to confuse The Bahamas with other countries in the West Indies, particularly in referring to the language.Bahamians would never refer to their dialect as patois. (that's Jamaica and other countries). Bahamians just call their English dialect "Bahamian dialect". And some of the words are not in general use as stated, e.g. nyam is Jamaican, and bobo, if used, more usually refers to Rastas, not morons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photography
We had just returned from 2 weeks of sailing to various islands in the French West Indies and wanted to see more of St Bart's.This is the perfect book. The photos are beautiful and really portray the warmth and beauty of this lovely little island. We were looking for the answer to the the question of would we want to spend a few weeks there and the book lead us to conclude with a resounding yes.Any guests who see it on our coffee table cannot resisit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't order this book - I ordered it three months ago and still don't have it
This book is still listed for sale on the Amazon website, but I ordered mine three months ago, August 13th, and EACH WEEK I get an email saying that shipping has been delayed. When I go to my order page it says the order is "in progress" and cannot be cancelled. There is nowhere I can email them or call them to find out what the heck is going on.Be forwarned!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book

4-0 out of 5 stars Great as a basic reference guide
This book was easy to understand and extremely well organized. The only problem we had with it was that much of the information (such as ferry prices, hours listed, etc) is out of date, and we wish it contained more maps. However, as a basic introduction to the lifestyle on these islands, their history, and an overview of their major hotels/restaurants, this book serves the purpose extremely well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not To Miss-A Must Have
Great Book.We have bought many books about the Caribbean over the years, but this is one of the best if not the best. Easy to read, full of up to date info and breaks it down into catagories easy to find.Does not just refer to the large hotels or famous places to eat, but also those not so famous.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent new guide... replete with detailed information on every aspect of vacationing on the islands. Illustrated with maps and drawings. Focus on France ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A personal view of Cuba
The style of presentation that Tom Miller uses in "Trading with the Enemy" captures a personal perspective of Cuba. For those who critique this as a travel reader should see this as "his" travel reader. For me, his book was required reading for a graduate class on Cuban culture, business and economic policy.Usually required reading doesn't engage my full attention; this book did.I appreciated the fact that the subject matters within "Trading with the Enemy" were handled with objectivity, humor, and humanity. The strength this format provides allows him to be descriptive without pontification.Following the reading of "Trading with the Enemy" (and other texts), my class included a 10-day trip to Havana (it happened to be the week in which the recent Iraqi War started) and its environs to study our selected research topics.Tom Miller was gracious enough to be an unofficial guide and advisor for this excursion. His insights (both written and interpersonal)proved to be essential for understanding the milieu within which we were trying to operate. This book gives a reader an individual's perspective of "cubanidad" - with its glory, shortcomings, simplicities, nuanced complexities all included. For those who enjoy readings that "speak to you" rather than "speak at you, this book will be an informative and enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essentially a travelogue & diary
Miller concentrates on the people he meets and keeps away from politics.4-0 out of 5 stars Good if dated introduction
I'm surprised at the dislike some reviewers have expressed towards this book. True, its dated picture of 1992-era Cuba does not ring entirely true compared to the country one sees today: more and more marked by tourism everyday. But Miller's funny, flowing writing style and encounters with everyone from literati to farmers to hustlers are rendered in an intelligent and observant way. His 'digressive' style of writing actually serves the material quite well, and preserves a chatty familiarity that does justice to what this is: a travel diary. It's a lot more astute than most of them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Review on Self Portrait By Che Guevara
A very interesting way of portraying the Cuban hero through pictures. My one criticism is that the pictures at the end of the book are not captioned to tell us what they are or when they were taken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Che on Che
This is a magnificent book... people might say that is pro-cuban biography but what we really have here is Che like the way he was... If you really want to know che this is the book you should be reading, pay no attention to the "gusanos" (the exiles from Miami that don't deserve to be called cubans)who don't like Che becuase he is a better man that all those "gusanos" put together... The reason Che will be present today and tomorrow is because his only dream was to liberate people all over the world without caring about skin color.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book of Memoirs
If you are tired of the same books on Che Guevara, this is the different book.Formed by texts and images based upon Che's own life it follows mainly the same path of its biographers but in such a beautiful way it made his own daughter Aleyda (who rarely saw him) exclaim: "the photos in this book are so magnificent you feel a desire for kissing him, embracing him and keep talking to him" (she means with his own personal texts based in his own testimony).

1-0 out of 5 stars Is Lonely Planet Slipping
I have been a great fan of the Lonely Planet guides for years and have used them in Central America and Australia and places that I have just dreamed of going. But this one seems to be written by people who were just afraid to travel or only spent a week here. I have lived in the DR for two years now and once lived in Haiti. Sorry ' LP' I think perhaps your reporters are getting a bit soft. Where is my beloved guide to the world of toilet-seats-optional hotels. This one even rates some of the VERY pricey all inclusive resorts that are just Cancun. My former LP guides would not even include these monsters. Yup -the Rough Guide is better.

3-0 out of 5 stars too much history, not enough helpful info
I am about to leave to study abroad in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. I bought this book, as well as the Rough Guide to the DR. I think the Rough Guide is far superior to the Lonely Planet guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice for a Travel Guide

4-0 out of 5 stars Great compact guide
This book came in handy on our recent visit to St. Lucia. It was small and had great pictures. The top 10 sights of St. Lucia list was also helpful. The book was organized by areas of the Island, so it was difficult to make comparisons without flipping back and forth. Overall I would give the book a high recommendation. ... Read more
