I hate books that refer to objects but neglect to include a photograph.It's 2005, I need visuals.

Very Good Research
I thought the author did their work reviewing the places visited and knows the island well. Should never overlook the little places to visit and dine at , you can always find a hidden treasure somewhere! Good reading and very helpful book.

What about the other 90% of the Caribbean?
Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands. incomplete
The review says that the book includes information on St. Lucia and St. Maarten/St. Martin.It does not.It totally ignores most of the smaller islands of the Caribbean.I realize that they could not fit an in-depth analysis of all the Caribbean islands into one book, but to totally ignore the vast majority of islands makes this book incomplete and disappointing.

Excellent and Current!
This book is great. It has so much information about the caribbean. These Garrett folks are hilarious. They seem to put their heart into this book and I appreciate it. There is a lot of info for couples looking for romantic spots and for families with kids. This rocks! ... Read more

Very Basic Info--you will need to do your own research
Caribbean Ports of Call is packed with information, but missing what I am looking for.It does give good basic information regarding the different ports of call, including highlights of each area, walking tours, and a sampling of shops, restaurants, beaches, etc.Everything is rather vague, however.What I feel the book is lacking is specific information regarding excursions, shopping and off-the-beaten track destinations.Only those excursions sponsored by the cruise lines are covered.You do not need this book to find that information--it is all listed on the cruise line websites themelves!There is a single page on which private excursion companies are mentioned, but none are named.They do no comparing for you, but suggest you do the research yourself to find the best prices.The reason I purchased the book was so that I would not have to do the research.For example, St. Martin is a mecca for finding fine 14k and diamond jewelry.One watch shop, one pearl shop and two high-end jewelry shops are referred to.Additionally, it does not tell you where the shops are--are they in Marigot or Phillipsburg?You won't save any time having to figure these things out for yourself.Another example is this: my family will be visiting Martinique, St. Martin and Barbados.We want to swim with the dolphins.The book does not mention that a 15 minute ferry ride from St. Martin to Anguilla will get you a full day of dolphin discovery, swimming and lunch offered by www.shoretrips.com.I found this information simply using a seach engine.Only a signle page was devoted to Anguilla even though it is a lovely, unspoiled island and easily accessible from St. Martin.I was hoping the book would list tour and excursion companies that offer price comparisons to cruise ship offerings and better values than those offered on the ships. There are none to be found in the book.I was looking for comparisons between excursions offered by the cruise lines and those you could find through private tour companies on the island and book yourself.The shopping sections also seemed to be just briefly skimmed over.St. Martin has dozens of reputable, jewelry shops with hefty discounts off of US prices.I have personally shopped in several on earlier trips.None of these are mentioned.I think the book would be much better if it dug a little deeper and gave more specific information.What it seems to be is a summary of what you will find on any of the cruise line websites.I did not find it particularly helpful--all of the info in the book can be found using search engines, reading cruise reviews or with search engines.

Walking tours! It has walking tours and maps of the ports and very complete information on each island listed. If you want to tour on our own, this is book for you.

very practical for cruise passengers
This book was definitely the most (if not the only) practical book for my week-long cruise along Eastern Caribbean islands last week, and I took a good look at about ten of them! It provides a good balance between amount and brevity of information to make it a fast and easy read and to help you schedule your limited time on each island as best as possible, depending on your particular interests - be it shopping, sunbathing, golfing, or fishing. Deliervs as advertised
The title says "Dive Sites of the Bahamas" and it delivers.Specific descriptions, exact locations, and details on the dive site (depth, currents, visibility, etc.) More than meets the eye

Outstanding guide.
"Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide tothe finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants onthe two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid,in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, forinstance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility inBarbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resortsis, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay,Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts:Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planninga Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of givingyou the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's nodenying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors areunaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds andventure out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip toeither of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of thistop-notch guidebook.

Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly.
The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994.We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.).The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything. The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described!This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide.It's also a bargain at Amazon.com! ... Guide To Island Paradise

Very good guide book
I think this is an excellent guidebook.It has the flavor of a Lonely Planet book, without such a complete "backpacker" emphasis.I find it enjoyable to just read.It's very well written, without trying so hard to be cute or flashy.(I recently bought a pile of guidebooks for Florida and they were all a waste of money except the Michelin Green Guide!Leave it to Michelin.)

I have visited the Virgin Islands many times, and always with great delight. This book has shown me many things I didn't know, and will definitely be in my suitcase next time.

Not a travel guide.
I bought this book thinking it could be used as a travel guide for my trip. Unfortunately it doesn't give enough detail in the vein of "go here, go there", nor does it make any recommendations of locations/activities. Furthermore, it doesn't give enough detail of attractions that are listed in the book.For instance, the story behind the Tiki Huts is hilarious and had I not learned it I wouldn't have bothered going (it involves a French game show and some mermaids). As a small picture book or for general history of the islands it's good, but I'd suggest alternatives of you want a guide book. ... Read more

Helps To Narrow The Choices Down
I've read other books on the Dominican Republic from cover to cover and ended up with too much information. The top 10 book summarizes the major sections of the country in such a way that you can get a feel for each area.

Snorkeling guide?What Snorkeling Guide?
I bought this book sight unseen because most of Lonely Planets guides are very good.However there are almost no references to snorkeling in the book.The info is all about diving and even that is not very in depth.Adding snorkeling to the title seems to be a blatent attempt to sell more books.

Better Choices Elsewhere.
After using Lonely Planet books exclusively to tour Europe, I expected the same thoroughness in this book. I was surprised how incomplete this book is. My friend did pick a better book while in Grand Cayman, unfortunately the title eludes me at this time. Lonely Planet only touches the surface on the available dive sites but if you want quick easy reading without high expectations then this is the book for you. ... Read more

The book had some interesting things in it but overall was not as helpful as we had hoped.There were marinas not listed that we saw and some of the marinas that were in the book we couldn't find.It also failed to tell us that at one point there is a sharp turn that is not clearly marked at all.Thankfully there was another boat nearby that we could ask.We were glad to have the book but wish it was more acurate. ...
