A bit of a let down
Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

I found this guide pleasant to look through, but not half as helpful as Best Dives of the Caribbean by Hunter Publishing, which gives a lot more detail on the dive sites, places for kids to snorkel, hotels and everything I need to plan a vacation. ... Read more

Don't Leave Home Without It

Not too helpful....
I did not find this book to be helpful in providing information specific to Barbados that I could not find in any free tourist booklet on the island.There is a whole page on "Beach Boys"... there are local men anywhere you may go on vacation that will try to pick up vacationing women.This is not information specific to Barbados.There is a whole page on "What to take":Shoes and socks, underwear,swimsuit,soap,sunscreen,comb,shaving kit,etc,etc. Please!!!I stayed at the Coconut Court Beach Resort which is one of the oldest and most respected family run hotels on the island and it is not even listed in the accomodation sections. I would save your money and pick up the multitude of free guides available on the island.

Outstanding guide.
"Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide tothe finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants onthe two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid,in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, forinstance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility inBarbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resortsis, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay,Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts:Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planninga Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of givingyou the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's nodenying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors areunaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds andventure out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip toeither of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of thistop-notch guidebook.

Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly.
The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994.We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.).The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything. The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described!This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide.It's also a bargain at Amazon.com! ... Not that great
The book is published in England so its difficult to convert in my head from the metric system to the US system.

Well written, readable ethnographic account of Barbados
Excellent ethnography of the the changes that have been occurring in Barbados since the arrival of Europeans and Africans.The Gmelches take students to the island for a semester every other year so they can learnhow to do ethnographic research in cultural anthropology.They are placedin Bajian homes and live there for ten weeks.The book is well informed bythe students' perspectives. They help us all see what this island is likeand what the life of the islanders has become in the light of tourismdevelopment on the island.The Gmelches write well and the book is easy toread and very informative. I have made the book a required text in one ofmy university, introductory anthropology courses.

An excellent depiction of life in rural Barbados.
The Gmelch's have, for many years, taken mostly white, middle-class, students from the USA to spend a college term living in rural St. Lucy Parish, Barbados. "The Parish Behind God's Back" presents a highly readable, appreciative, ethnographic account of contemporary village life gleaned from the Gmelch's own field work and that of their students. This book makes a very strong case for the value of study abroad schemes as it lets readers understand much about the process by which students gain insights into themselves and their own cultures while learning to live among strangers. Excellent insightful read
As a Bajan I was pleased when I read this book it goes beyond the typical tourist representation of the island and tastefully and tactfully covers many of the uniques cultural mores and forces that have shaped our island. It gives a brief and acuurate history of the island concerning race relations, politics and culture and even quite accurately explains why Bajans are percieved as smug! : ) Hopefully on reading this book the tourist more informed will be able to enjoy the island many flavors and facets more deeply.

Perfect for both visitors and armchair travellers.

Adventure it was
This book covered everything, it was great I bought it before I visited the place, with this book in hand you can experience the TRUE Barbados. It gives information about all you need to know, how to get arround, practical information, where to stay and so on. This was a complete resource for this one-of-a-kind destination,Well I had the best times going there!

Not a new edition
We bought this book on the recommendation of our friends who traveled to Barbados with a previous edition. However, when we compared it with the book our friends had, we found it was quite different and not nearly as detailed and comprehensive. Searching on Amazon, we found that the author of the previous edition, Harry S. Pariser, had a new guide Explore Barbados. We bought that book and really found it useful.
