3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down
Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photography
We had just returned from 2 weeks of sailing to various islands in the French West Indies and wanted to see more of St Bart's.This is the perfect book. The photos are beautiful and really portray the warmth and beauty of this lovely little island. We were looking for the answer to the the question of would we want to spend a few weeks there and the book lead us to conclude with a resounding yes.Any guests who see it on our coffee table cannot resisit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't order this book - I ordered it three months ago and still don't have it
This book is still listed for sale on the Amazon website, but I ordered mine three months ago, August 13th, and EACH WEEK I get an email saying that shipping has been delayed. When I go to my order page it says the order is "in progress" and cannot be cancelled. There is nowhere I can email them or call them to find out what the heck is going on.Be forwarned!

This is the guide that contains everything one needs for a vacation in Martinique. It gives details on activities ranging from free rum tastings to the volcano museum to Napoleon's Josephine to Gaugin, the painter. The guide is honest when rating attractions; only the most interesting are given three stars.I have looked at every guide to Martinique I could find, and this is the only one I would buy. ... My wife and I went to St. Lucia in April. We had prepared for our trip byreading all this book had to say about the island, which was very helpfulin planning day trips, money exchange, restaurants, etc.We took the bookwith us and it was extremely helpful with maps when we drove around theisland, and the different side trips off the main road.I would highlyrecommend it to any who are planning a trip to that area!

4-0 out of 5 stars A true sailor's guide, not for the tourist
The shoreside details may be outdated, but the craft of cruising these islands is timelessly preserved. Not many people cruise today without an engine, and only without an engine can you develop the kind of insights Mr. Street shares. If you don't appreciate his opinionated views on the island communities, you can't deny that he is a master sailor. The countless ranges he has documented guide one safely through the islands without fear of one's GPS receiver having a bad day.His challenge to find an anchorage where you can lie with 6' foot draft that he has not documented is in the finest tradition of sailing bluster.I doubt anyone will find one that Mr. Street has not sailed into.Wherever you may go in the Windward Islands, picture doing it all without an engine, and you will begin to appreciate the craft documented in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat informative, but disappointing
This book is well organized and written, but I was never sure how up-to-date the information was.The book was first written back in the 1960's and was last published in 2001.The author does not ease my concerns because in several places in the book he says this is the way it was in the early 1970's, or I went back in 1984 to update this information. It reminds me of listening to my father reminisce about the good old days-pleasent stories, but not always relevant to the way things are today. Also, there are few pictures contained in the book and none of them are in color. This adds to the feel that the book was written in the 1960's and it certainly does not create excitement or motivate anyone to go to the Windward Islands. In summary, the positives are: detailed information on navigation, sailing routes, areas with tricky currents, waves, etc.The negatives:limited and/or outdated information on navigation hazards, buoy locations, places to get provisions, restaurants, hotels, shops etc. This is a pricey book and I would expect it not to be outdated and dull.It appears that the book is slipping from a cruising guide to an autobiography by Mr. Street.I would skip this one. ... Excellent It bailed us out when we ran out of light before getting into the anchorage at Philipsburg and got us into several beaches that were completely deserted.5-0 out of 5 stars Don't sail or charter in the USVI & BVI without this book
We've sailed and chartered in the USVI and BVI numerous times and ALWAYS take this guide with us. From little known anchorages (Mermaids Chair on St. Thomas) to the most frequented (Great Harbor on Yost Van Dyke)thisguide is without equal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be aware that this book is completely written in French!...
When I bought this book, there was no clear indication that it was written totally in French. I can speak and write a bit so I got by and the book seems very thorough. Lots of good maps and pictures accompanies this guide for Guadeloupe, Martinique, St.Barths, St.Martin and even a few of the neighbouring islands such as Antigua, St.Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and Anguilla. Again, let me emphasize that the Michelin guides are totally written in French! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite travel guides ever.
This is one of my favorite travel guides, ever, period.Even though this book is aimed at sailors, it has plenty of helpful information for land travelers too.Plus it has a lot of information I've never found in another travel guide. The best example is this. One beautiful night as we sat on our terrace enjoying the 180 degree view of the southern skies, I turned to my travel partner and said, "Did you print off those star charts so we can identify the southern cross?"His response. "Uh oh, I never got around to that."
2-0 out of 5 stars Too many adverts
Doyle's info was very good and the color arial photos and mini charts are very usefull. The book is 9 inches by 6 inches and has 400 pages, however if you were to remove the advertizments and touristy photos you would probably end up with about 275 pages of usefull info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare combination of useful advice and humor
As a frequent user of cruising guides, I appreciate how rare is the combination of useful, detailed advice and a sense of humor.Chris Doyle does it here, and every traveler (or prospective traveler) to theGrenadines should get this guide. It's not just for sailors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Indeed!
This book is a wonderful blend of terrific recipes and an inside look at the beautiful island of St. Barths. The photos are breathtaking and the recipes delicious! If you haven't already been to the island, you'll definitely want to put it on your travel list after reading this.

5-0 out of 5 stars St. Barts In Our Home
St. Barts is very dear to my husband and I, but more so for me.It holds a very special place in my life.It has offered me peace, contentment, a chance to regroup, recharge. We have placed our copy of Paradise Found on our coffee table at home. Robert and Kara have produced a book that is both a recipe book and a history of St. Barts. The book takes me back there whenever I look at it, read it.They have captured not only the essence of St. Barts, but the people that make St. Barts what it is. The stories are fascinating. The photographs are breathtaking and when I look at the photo on the front cover, I can smell the ocean, hear the ocean, feel the sun, feel St. Barts.I have tried several of the recipes and so far none have failed. As a "wanna be" gourmet chef, this is quite the accomplishment !We have been to most of the restaurants featured and have now visited those we hadn't previously. This is a beautiful, wonderful book and if you love St. Barts, you'll love this book.If you've not been to St. Barts? This will make you go !5-0 out of 5 stars Uncovering the Soul of St. Barth's
This book reveals St. Barthelemy in a unique way. The Brooks' exceptional photographs & revealing interviews with resident restaurant owners present a compelling case. "Paradise Found" is in a class by itself--more than a guide, more than a cookbook. For those who already know the island, it keeps the flame alive between trips. For those contemplating a first trip, it will give a feel for the people, the marvelous cuisine and the ambiance of a special piece of paradise. ... Read more
