5-0 out of 5 stars Go Chris Santilli
Fortunately, I am lucky enough to have Chris as my ENGLISH professor at Elmhurst College this semester!! The book is a must for traveling to Jamaica's famed resort. Chris is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get for newbies
I went to Hedo for the first time this year and was glad to learn more about the resort before I arrived. highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars what a boring book!
We didn't finish the book because we found it completely unerotic and asexual. The author tells you for instance to bring safety pins to hold your toga in place and to bring toenail polish because the sand on the beach will wear it off. Wow!!! The stories told are all childish fun, but there's not a single one titillating. Puritan lack of sexuality. Boring.

Editorial Review

Jamaica is a small but complex island. Famous for her beaches and music, there is an abundance of stretches of white sandbedecked by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. Reggae, Jamaica's other celebrated quality, is alive and happening. It is necessary to have a good guideto find your way to the Blue Mountains and Back River, check out the wildlife, and understand the island's culture--as well as to navigate your way through Kingston to the best reggae haunts, drinking holes, and Jamaican food stands. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped build the excitement!
We ordered this book about 2 months before our trip to Jamaica, our first trip out of the USA.This book both helped us feel prepared and helped build our excitement.Knowledge aleviated any fears we were having about being fish out of water. This book is a must have for any "first-timer".

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent guidebook
I just returned from Jamaica.I took 3 guidebooks with me, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Frommers.Rough Guide blew the others out of the water, and according to the locals was the only decent guide.Lonely Planet was so poor on Jamaica, that we surmised the writer probably got hung up smoking ganja in Montego Bay and never made it to the other cities, using promotional brochures and faxed promotional blurbs to write the text.Meanwhile, Rough Guide presented a picture that fit with what the locals knew and recommended. We had a great trip, virtually skipping Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, and seeing a number of towns including Port Antonio, Treasure Beach and Runaway Bay.Rough Guide had excellent food, accommodation, and siteseeing recommendations throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know
I have been to Jamaica many times since 1972, doing research as an anthropologist, which includes reading everything I can about its people and culture as well as traveling about and living in various communities. I picked up this book shortly before my most recent trip, hoping to get some hints on places to stay as it's been awhile since I've been back. I read it thoroughly as I traveled extensively around the island for 18 days. And I'm quite impressed. It is an extremely informative and accurate guide to the history, culture, things to see and do, places to eat and stay. The hotel reviews are brief but to the point. The advice is sound. The maps are very helpful. The only criticism I can make is that in at least two cases I found the directions to be wrong.I am most impressed with the fact that the book can really get you out of the tourist areas and into the real Jamaica. It is a great guide for those who want to EXPLORE the island and come to know it well. This takes time, a car, and money, though. Finally, I'd like to add that the book is just the right size, easy to carry, and has a very sturdy cover and binding, so it'll survive more than one trip.I suppose the greatest compliment is that a Jamaican friend wanted me to give it to her after she discovered it had information on her own town that she didn't know. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you already have the 2nd edition
I very much liked the 2nd edition of this text. I purchased the 3rd edition because we are planning our third trip to Jamaica. Unfortunately, this new edition contains very little updated information. In fact, two of the newer Riu hotels in Negril (one of which opened in 2001) are not even included in this guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate honeymoon guide.
I recently got married and this guide was all I needed to find the best of Jamaica. With its section on the Best of Jamaica, I was given the top choices for everything from the best beaches, honeymoon resorts, romantic getaways, shopping buys, and gold courses. This guide made planning my trip simple, with all the information I needed to know before I got there, like the exchange rate, the calendar of events, and tips on dining out and shopping. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Actually is the only recent guide from Jamaica
I bought this guide because is the only guide from Jamaica published in 2006. Not bad, I haven't gone to Jamaica yet but it has been useful for planning my tryp. I think that I will take some of the advices that I've read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously out of date
While one can expect a guidebook to be somewhat out of date, this one is so out of date it is ridiculous.Published in January 2006, one would expect the information to at least be accurate as of mid-2005.However, that is far from the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide.
"Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide tothe finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants onthe two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid,in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, forinstance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility inBarbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resortsis, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay,Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts:Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planninga Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of givingyou the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's nodenying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors areunaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds andventure out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip toeither of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of thistop-notch guidebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly.
The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994.We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.).The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything. The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described! This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide. It's also a bargain at Amazon.com! ... It is obvious that Chris Santilli has a great sense of humor. She takes a lot of the mysticism away from what one would expect while visiting Hedo II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This book is great!Growing up in a West Indian hous hold in the US,I was familiar with the flavors of the food, but not with cooking the food. This book was instrumental in honing my carribean cooking skills and is an excellent reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good recipe book
Being a Jamaican I was a bit sceptical about this book being written by foreigners (AKA non-Jamaicans), but you know this is a good overall recipe book. They did not try to tweak recipes or 'improve' upon them, but rather collected recipes from authentic Jamaican cooks. The pictures are very nice also. They have good recipes for patties, gizzadas, rice and peas and many more.I got this in high school knowing that I would one day have to move out of my parents house and cook on my own...now I'm married with 3 kids and still love this book...great for beginners or experienced cooks!

Editorial Review

Certainly there are beaches and dreadlocks aplenty in Karl Luntta's guide to Jamaica, but he takes it out of the realm of the ordinary with his informed and sensitive history; his inclusion of small coastal and mountain communities; and his in-depth exploration of reggae culture, background, and music. Luntta has a sense of humor and a fine eye for detail, and his lists of accommodations and eating choices are extensive. People normally buy a guide after they've chosen a destination, but this book might switch the usual order. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough
I can't say this is the best guide to Jamaica, but it is generally reliable (although the National Museum of Archaeology no longer exists in Port Royal) and more than adequate for most travelers. In fact, it may be suitable particularly for the typical tourist, because it doesn't tell you a lot more than you want to know.It doesn't venture far beyond the usual tourist destinations, but most visitors to Jamaica are probably not into playing anthropologist off the beaten track.I like the type and layout of the book, which make it easy to find things, easy to skim, and easy on the eyes too. But, while it hasn't got as much use as my other guidebooks to Jamaica, the spine is already splitting.

4-0 out of 5 stars An useful and valuable guide--- Recommended.
Five things which should be found in any recommended travel guide: 1) An introduction to the country or region that is as engagingas it is informative; 2) An excellent section that covers the travel information that you need prior to heading out (visa, passport, health, etc.) 3) The CORE of the guide; accommodations, restaurants, and sights to see, offer you a bias descriptions.A bias that is based on the writer's judgment and a set of criteria that they use to determine excellence.Thereby, you can make an informed decision with confidence. The writer's feedback must be based on theiractual visit and/or experiences. Also, this information needs to be current; so that the name, address, phone & fax numbers are still in use. And, finally,in today's cyberspace world, email and web site addresses should be also included. 4) Maps. Many Maps. Usable, readable maps. 5) Finally, tidbits, charts, graphs, side bar topics and fun to read caveats.A guide with these qualities earns a "highly recommended" rating - five stars.5-0 out of 5 stars Best For Those Who Want To Experience The "REAL" Jamaica
My brother and I took Karl Lunta's book with us to Jamaica in 1996.Because of his maps and local knowledge we rented a car and toured the island from Negril to the breathtaking San San beach and the Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio on our own.We stopped along the road at local stores and eateries enabling us to meet the Jamaican people. For the traveler that isn't afraid to leave their resort "compound" Karl Lunta's book will be their "Bible". 4-0 out of 5 stars Take "JAMAICA GIRL" Along
"Lonely Planet" is great as a travel guide, but if you want a great read on your trip to Jamaica, take "JAMAICA GIRL" along with you.Jon Michael Miller's novel shows you the real Jamaica, far behind the walls of the famous all-inclusive resorts. You will see the struggles and the joys of a wonderful people, as well as meet Rosalind Juliet Mitchell, a fabulously brave and resourceful progagonist, on her search for love and freedom. It is by far the best book about Jamaica I have ever read.A wonderful story, suspenseful, sexy, funny, disturbing, and quite moving.Wonderful characters. And a great message about the power of love to transform one's existence.A great read for a vacation, or, even, a vacation in itself.
