3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down
Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook
Grenada, St Vincent & the Grenadines Adventure Guide has been selected by the Caribbean Tourism Organization as "Best Guidebook to the Caribbean in 2004."

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good guide book
My wife and I took this book with us on a recent "Yankee Clipper" cruise from Windjammer. The book was quite useful with good descriptions (usually a paragraph or two) of the accomodations and restaurants on the islands we visited (Grenada, Mayreau, Bequia, Carricou, Tobago Cays). The authors were very up front about the experiences they DIDN'T like which helped us to avoid frustration. The book also had a nicely organized table of contents which helped navigate the book quickly.5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable and worthwhile guide
This guide is immediate and thorough; it give a host of places and activities that could fulfill even the most bored tourist's desires. The book is salted with the kind of personal experience that makes visiting these islands so special. They take us away from palm beaches, island vistas and rugged emerald mountains and put us in touch with the people who inhabit these beautiful places. From fishermen in Barrouallie to Rastas in the Port Elizabeth market and a botanist in St. George's, we get a sense of the lives that entwine to make up the fabric of these islands. Also, each section begins with a history of the place at hand, so important to understanding the southern Windwards. The authors have produced a journeyman labor, a product of discernment and enterprise tempered with warmth and humor. Those of us who have seen the southern Windwards as a special place for so long have reason to be thankful and relieved.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The real scoop for the tourist visiting St. Vincent
This is a good over view book that expands, but does not replace an excellent travel annual published by the St. Vincent travel bureau. The author is explicit about specific companies and people who can render service, such as diving. She also updates situations that may have changed since recorded in an older travel book. She clearly loves the islands and this comes through. Not expensive, and well worth adding. Books about St. Vincent are few enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical take-along guide.
One of Passport Books "Caribbean Sunseekers" series, St. Vincent & Grenadines is small sized(7 x 4 x 1/2 inches) and has durable, water resistent pages. It includes historical, cultural, dining, andlodging information, but most of it is devoted to site-seeing andrecreation. There is a map of St. Vincent, one of Kingstown, and one ofthe Grenadines. It is illustrated with colorful photos. This book is usefulin planning and makes a nice souvenir, but it really shines as a take-alongguide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare peek
This book is a wonder. And I mean just that. It's about people who have second or third or fourth homes on an island that has been purposefully developed to house them in privacy and various definitions of splendour. Not exactly appealing to all, right? But this book IS appealing, it's theembodiment of the capitalist dream: get the money and THEN what do you dowith it? Build or buy a house on Mustique. BEST is the text, awell-written account of how this all happened. And the PHOTOGRAPHS arelovely, chosen to evoke the mood. Yes, the book is expensive (no wherenearly as the real estate!), but it's worth every penny. May not be mydream, but it a serious chronicle of some important other dreams in thelate 20th/early 21st century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of its time
This is an excellently written book about one of the world's most expensive "developments," a scrub island turned into a multi-millionaires' paradise. Mr. Vaughan has done amasterful job ofcapturing the whimsy and the vision (albeit sometimes slightly cock-eyed)of the man who dreamed this all up, as well as bits of the lives of thosewho are now availing themselves of the private, secure, and demonstrablyexquisitely beautiful end result. The photographs are lovely, this isan altogether great book to have lying around on any cofee table; it's sureto spark conversation ("is that really Mick Jagger?" et cetera).

5-0 out of 5 stars Well writtem with excellent Photos
I think this book captures the true essence of the island of Mustique. It shown all the wonderful beaches and the beautiful water. I believe that the photos of the people that live on the island and the photos of their town make Mustique a place I would want to visit for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tales of Bequia, a daughter's prespective
At the time this book was written my father described life on Bequia as it was.The people he spoke about where very much like himself, seeking solice in a place away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.He owned a major NYC public relations business and it was a place he and my mother could escape to to unwind and regroup.Sadly, this year they sold their home which he had built from stone, purple heart and green heart wood.Thishouse holds many memories for my entire family as do the many friends and acquaintances we had the pleasure to meet over the 30+ years we were fortunate to call Bequia "our home away from home".All three of his grandddaughters and one of his two greatgrandsons have visited Bequia and have many memories. This book was written from his heart and is a tribute to the people of Bequia, those born there and those fortunate to call it home, even for a short while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Paradise in the Clouds
Tales of Bequia is as refreshing as the breeze on the island paradise's Friendship Bay.Thomsen has a flare for capturing the personality of both the island and its inhabitants.Using a narrative style in the besttradition of Bequian story-telling -the author introduces us to the islandthrough a cast of characters who live there. Each chapter is filled withantidotes of the life on this Caribbean "Island of the Clouds",seen through the eyes of the author. Like reading somebodies personaljournal, Thompsen writes about the context of a particular people and theculture of St. Vincent's largest Grenadine island. This book fails torecieve five stars for several reasons. The book is outdated.Referencesto the new Prime Minister and his popularity seem painfully out of touch asthe same Prime Minister is now fallen from the nation's favor, even on hisown native Bequia.Others mentioned in the book have since died andalthough things in the islands move slowly, the island has changed sincethis books printing. Another shortcoming of the book is that Thomsen spendstoo much time introducing us to those who are not native Bequians.Theisland has a rich diversity, due in significant measure to theinternational yachting community, but it is too heavily weighted withstories about Canadians and Americans. The chapters that deal with theEaster Regatta, the rich culture and heritage around Whaling are the bestbest representatives of Thompsens writing style. I have sat at theFrangipani in Port Elizabeth and watched many of the people Thompsen describes. Those who long to read a good series of stories about a greatisland and some wonderful people, will enjoy this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite travel guides ever.
This is one of my favorite travel guides, ever, period.Even though this book is aimed at sailors, it has plenty of helpful information for land travelers too.Plus it has a lot of information I've never found in another travel guide. The best example is this. One beautiful night as we sat on our terrace enjoying the 180 degree view of the southern skies, I turned to my travel partner and said, "Did you print off those star charts so we can identify the southern cross?"His response. "Uh oh, I never got around to that."
2-0 out of 5 stars Too many adverts
Doyle's info was very good and the color arial photos and mini charts are very usefull. The book is 9 inches by 6 inches and has 400 pages, however if you were to remove the advertizments and touristy photos you would probably end up with about 275 pages of usefull info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare combination of useful advice and humor
As a frequent user of cruising guides, I appreciate how rare is the combination of useful, detailed advice and a sense of humor.Chris Doyle does it here, and every traveler (or prospective traveler) to theGrenadines should get this guide. It's not just for sailors. ... Read more
