5-0 out of 5 stars Anotherbeautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is another portable, soft cover, coffee-table book with the same high standards as the one on the the Greek islands! It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! It is particularly nice that with the exception of the cultural history part, this book is basically not redundant with the Island book, covering the mainland as the title indicates.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but you'll need a more detailed guide
The colorful photos and diagrams found in the DK travel books are a big plus for some and a major detraction for others. Personally I think this is a great book to use while making preliminary travel plans because it's very difficult to decide where to go if you can't see pictures of it first. Then once you narrow down your choices you'll want a more comprehensive travel guide, such as the Lonely Planet guides, which contain better maps, travel information, hotels, etc, but which have very few photos. I'm holding off on giving this book 5 stars because it lacks that kind of detail. However, I still pull it off my shelf frequently when I want to look up someplace on the Greek mainland I have not visited before.

2-0 out of 5 stars love the photos but it needs more maps
On a 10-day driving trip around mainland Greece this guide proved a disappointment. There aren't enough city maps so you need to buy a Lonely Planet guide as well.I love the DK guides to London and Paris where the neighborhoods and sights are so intricate that the DK diagrams and walking tours are immensely helpful. The restaurant recommendations turned out to be rather poor from the DK guide.Frommer's and Lonely Planet were a lot more reliable.

4-0 out of 5 stars French in 10 Minutes(?) a Day
While it might take more than 10 minutes a day, It does seem to take a systematic approach to learn a language. The book contains worksheets that helps to get the point fixed in your mind by seeing, saying (it starts you out with both the word and it's phonetic equivalent to help), and writing the word under discussion. The book also contains stickers that can be applied to items around your home to remind you of the word used to describe that item. There are also flash cards that can be used to test your knowledge and keep you sharp. It works well to do it with a partner, but you might want to each get your own book.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentWorkbook for the Beginner
As a beginner to learning the French language, I find this workbook very easy to use.It makes learning interesting because it incorporates fun activities that keep it from being tedious and boring. The pronunciations make sense, and the book starts off with key words that are frequently used.Placing the word labels around my house has been a great way to practice every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to learn french!
Other books start off with random words and have no flow but this book starts you off with the basics and helps you learn the most important words first. This book is easy to follow and it is actually effective. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EYEWITNESS GUIDES
I have used these guides for my travels in Ireland, London, Scotland, Rome, Florence, Venice, Switzerland, Germany and Amsterdam. These have to be some of the best guides ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars To plan your trip
Eyewitness Guides are beautiful, gorgeously illustrated books on glossy paper that are perfect for planning a trip but not so good for carrying along with you. But they don't need to be! I used the guide to Spain to plan my 5-city itinerary, including a stop in Ronda which I'd never heard of but ended up being one of the highlights of our travels. This guide gives you a general view of the sights to see, with many photos and maps. But especially in a country like Spain, the wise traveler makes his or her first stop the tourist office--there's one in every city and many towns. That's where you get your map, the info on walking tours, a schedule of museum openings and closings, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty but didn't use it
Before our family trip for 10 days throughout Germany, I purchased a few different travel guides. After having each of them in hand before leaving home, we didn't even put this one in our luggage.I reccommend Daytrips Germany, 6th Edition 1st and then Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2006. Those 2 books were great for finding tourist sites, great restaurants and hotels that could accomodate 2adults and 2 kids (most hotels don't have rooms with 2 beds!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Germany
As always the eyewitness travelguides are superb. This Germany travelguide meets the expectations i have placed into the exewitness series and is very up-to-date.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of our favorite Travel Guides
I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for several reasons:color photos, background/history, maps/drawings of destinations, color coded sections, front and back flaps can be used as page markers (plus that's where they put the symbols for the descriptions).

4-0 out of 5 stars Vacation Under the Valcano - Magic Tree House #13
Shortly before leaving for vacation, Jack and Annie remembered that they needed to go to the magic tree house to solve a mystery. Morgan said "your aventure is going to the Roman times you need to find this book or it will be lost forever""WOW! I always wanted to go to the Roman times this will be fun Annie" said Jack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volcanos wow!
My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for the last couple months and we love them. These are the first books that my son has taken a real interest into, checking them out and reading them on his own.Vacations under the Volcanois our favorite one so far. After checking out a bunch from the library we finally decided to buy a set, and he was so disappointed that this one wasn't part of the set that he bought it seperatly on his own. This book has sparked a whole new interest for him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magically Adventurous!

I got this beautiful book for two dear friends, brilliant musicians, who will be traveling to Italy soon. They were entranced, and have thanked me several times, saying the book makes them feel "as if we are already in Italy."

4-0 out of 5 stars Italy Coffee Table Book
The book is beautifully photographed. It has pictures of some out of the way places that some of the other brochures and books don't touch on.If you are looking for information, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discovering/ Revisiting Every Corner of Italy:THE Book To Read Before Travel
This is one of those books that defies description.Formed as a joint project between the Italian Tourism people and the New York Times, this generously illustrated volume covers all of Italy, not only photographically but also with immensely readable and helpful articles about the regions, the people and their idiosyncrasies, the culture, the history, the sights not to be missed, the foods, and an ebullient flow of gentle humor that makes this the first choice of reading in preparation for a visit to this popular country - or an invaluable memento for perusing once home from the pleasures Italian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I wanted this book to go on forever.I found it to be a very comforting, curl up in front of the fire, listening to jazz kind of book.Maybe I relate to it because I have to boys and adore Paris, I don't know... but I really enjoyed it.
4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars is a good read, as long as you are not expecting something it's not.
It's not an atmospheric travel memoir; it's not a memoir of youth (except in so far as a father relates to his young son); it's not "Almost French".
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing, warm, personal narrative, intimate story telling
Contrary to many of the reviews provided for this book, I have cherished this book as one of my favorite books on France.I lived in Tokyo, Japan as an expat for five years and felt an immediate kindred spirit with the author.I found my own personal experiences to be not that different from his own and related to many of his experiences on a deep, personal level. His gift of prosaic writing is a rare and wonderful treat within the travel essay genre, and I was delighted to be invited in to such an intimate and personal account of life in Paris. While most travel essay books are written by amateur writers, offering shallow accounts of brief stays in foreign lands, this book combines the rare writing talents of Adam Gopnik along with a fascinating, intimate portrait of Paris, a city that offers so much but which reveals so little for most of us who don't have the time to absorb and observe and experience what he was able to enjoy and write about for the rest of us. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Presenting Prague
This is the best travel guide I have ever used.Prague is presented in a way that does justice to its beauty and storied past. The richness and detail of the (mostly) color images of the sites being discussed give the guide a usefulness that I have not found in other guides. It is one of the few travel guides that I will keep in my private library long after my recent trip to Prague and the Czech Republic has ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for general-purpose tourism
I recently spent nine days in Prague, including a day and a half of a group tour, and about five full days of touring on my own.I found all of the information in the guide to be accurate and up-to-date, and to be at an appropriate level of depth and detail.I was able to prioritize and choose what I wanted to see, and get to everywhere. The information on public transit (metro and trams) was very helpful.I traveled to and through all the primary areas of interest without any additional maps or guidance.Because I went with a group, the hotel was pre-selected (and not one that was in the guide), so I cannot comment on that aspect of the guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best guide book you can get
I have traveled the world over, usually I use the lonely plant series. But now that I have used the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Prague I am hooked. This is a fantastic travel guide, you could not ask for anything better. There are clear maps with photos and drawings, so you can find everything. Then for each item it goes into details. For example the charles bridge has a four page spread where is has a drawing of the bridge and then a description about each statue. It is so EASY TO USE, and it has everything you will need. I had this and small map and that was it for a four day trip in Prague. I didn't really need the map as the book has all the maps you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book
This is such a good book, because of the way it is written, and also because of the incredible adventure it describes. It is the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica.Shackleton had been to the Antarctic twice before. The first time he accompanied Robert Falcon Scott in 1901 in an attempt to reach the as yet unclaimed South Pole and claim it for Great Britain. They were unsuccessful and came very close to losing their lives. The significant problems that went with traveling in the Antarctic were that no one lived there (and so no one was there to help if you got into trouble), nothing lived in the interior (no plants or animals to feed on), and the climatic conditions were horrific (snow, ice, wind speeds of up to 200 miles an hour and temperatures as low as -100 degrees Fahrenheit).Scott proved to be a very difficult man to travel with -arrogant, abusive and not particularly competent, which is not what you are looking for in the leader of such an expedition. The next time he journeyed south, in 1908, Shackleton, as the leader, chose his own men, and made his own mistakes, such as taking a team of ponies that were supposed to pull the sledges. The ponies were very ill-suited to such an environment and were eventually shot and eaten. This expedition was also a failure, but Shackleton had again learned a lot from the experience.By the end of 1912 the South Pole had been conquered by the Norwegian Amundson, and Shackleton's rival, Scott, had perished with all of his men only eleven miles from a supply depot that would have saved their lives. Now the only significant prize left to be achieved in the Antarctic was the traversing of the continent from one side to the other. Thus Shackleton's 1914 expedition was called the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Real adventure
It's a book that takes you to an incredible adventure. Photogrpahs make it even more exciting !

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Adventure, and Pictures,Too.
I don't know why I keep reading these sagas of sufferring and adventure about polar expeditions, but I do.Of course, Shackleton's Anarctic expedition is one of the best of the bunch.

I've had this book for years and it's one of my all time favorites- a must read, insightful. Beautiful- exquisiteillustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price
I first read this magnificent tome on Russian history and culture in 1997.As it was part of a history class in college, the first read was a bit of a drag...page after page of description concerning the minutia of Russian life: clothes, churches, meals, religious & superstitious rituals, architecture, commerce, political strife, and so on.Really, with the whirl of the Social Circus of that college year, trudging through all this obscure information brought me no end of grief and silent lamentation! To think of all that time I could have been out with friends looking to score whatever cheap release was on hand or burning inside...spent instead sludging through *detailed history*!5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
I bought this book in the early 80's and absolutely loved it.I recommended it to friends who were going to spend a year in Russia. They took it with them and shared it with their Russian friends, who copiedwhole chapters by hand -- all the while bemoaning the loss of so much oftheir rich, pre-revolutionary culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful memoir
This was a book I hated to see end.The descriptions of Corfu, family members and residents of the island, and wildlife were lyrical and loving. The author was a keen observer of his environment and was able to share his observations vividly with the reader. His humorous anecdotes were of laugh-aloud variety.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant summer read!
My Family and Other Animals is about a ten-year-old boy named Gerald who moves to the sun-soaked island Corfu, Greece with his family to escape the dreary and gloomy climate in London. There, he encounters many different animals and people. I absolutely loved this book because it was really funny. There was a lot of action in this book. Durrell lovingly described each and every animal that he owned. He also told every detail of the settings, so I felt like I was really in Corfu!

I guess I'm partial to Irish things, but I think this is a beautiful book. Pages are split between pictures...landscapes, buildings, homes, and text... Irish blessings (May the road rise to meet you...etc.) and Irishpoets. Not a book to read staight through, but a great display book for youand guests to thumb through during idle moments. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a unique perspective
Considering the wealth of information about Lance in other venues, this is a refreshing and unique perspective of the Tour with Lance as more of a backdrop and unifying theme.Definitely a more humanistic side is examined, and it satisfied my interest in more about the "behind the scenes" of the Tour.Reading Mr. Dugard's articles during the 2006 Tour were similarly incitefull and prompted me to read his book which was equally educational and entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars... Pleasant read about experiencing the Tour up close
The 2005 Tour will always be remembered as Lance's last grand stand in the Tour de France, winning an improbable (and most likely never to be equalled record) 7th straight win. It made for great TV viewing (as I experienced it).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book About The Tour Experience
Marty Dugard does a great job capturing the ambience of this amazing race in print.I've been to the last 10 Tours and what I remember most about my trips to France are the kinds of episodes Mr. Dugard shares with his readers in this book. For those who love the race, it's more than just 189 guys in tight pants crawling up the Galibier; it's the countryside and the food and the spectators and the publicity caravan and 342 days of looking forward to the next Tour.Dugard captures all of it.I'll be there again this year and CHASING LANCE has already got me stoked. ... From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare now sweeping Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the twentieth century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thick Description of the Balkan Landscape
Having read "Balkan Ghosts" after "Imperial Grunts," the experience of reading this book was disconcerting."Imperial Grunts" tells of the present and is much faster-moving with only enough historical background beginning each chapter, to bring the reader up to pace with events in Columbia, the Philippines, Yemen, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Corner of the World
I was very intruiged by Balkan Europe and wanted to learn more. This book, while a travelogue, was also a great historical primer. I've had several friends who've also been very impressed with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best snapshot of Balkan history available
I bought this book because I needed a crash course in Balkan history.I am married to a Macedonian and we were getting ready to visit together for the first time.

Liked it alot. The chapter about how they built Venice was very interesting. A must have book if you are going to Venice or the Veneto.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book
I could not be more happier with the Eyewitness Travel Guide books. Last year my mother and I went to Prague and had the Prague book of the series with us. We relied on this book to guide us through the entire city, and it did. These books are absolutely wonderful. They are so helpful in finding you anything you need! They have detailed plans and maps of the cities, and provide you with information on just about everything! We just recieved the Venice & the veneto and florence & tuscany books. They have so much information about these cities amidst beautiful photographs and maps. You will not be dissappointed if you buy this book, or any other from the series. They are a lifesaver, and a tour guide in writing!
