Microstates deserve more analysis of this kind
This fascinating compendium fills an important gap in the area of political and cultural geography.One hopes for a further augmented second edition that covers in more detail the Order of Malta (a sovereign entity), the Channel Islands (which are personal dependencies of the British Crown, not part of the UK and EU - and beyond the jurisdiction of the UK Parliament) and perhaps such unusual European enclaves as Campione d'Italia (a piece of Italy within Switzerland that functions as a quasi-Swiss jurisdiction).
A Masterful Geographical and Historical Work
In researching sources for information on Malta for a forthcoming excursion after the Universala Kongreso de Esperanto next year, I came across Tom Eccardt's "Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe."I not only found everything I needed to know about Malta, but was fascinated by his treatment of the other six small states. This is an excellently researched work, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in geography or history.

There is not a single map, nor a picture. The information can be summarized as "it snows in Europe, there are ski resorts there, the ski lift prices are 170-200 Euro per week, in the listed 3% of hotels the prices are 50-150 Euro per week, and there are appartments too." ... Read more

Detailed Information
It is very difficult to find guide books for this area. This one has lots of specifics. Information is given either by the area & village as well as by interest. There are maps of vineyards, museums,forests, food specialties and festivals. Excellent color photos + essential information
This guide provides many color photos of the Pyrenees & Gascony. Help is given on planning a vacation there, with ideas of what to do and where to go. Topics such as food, churches, villages etc. are covered. However, with so many photos this guide may not provide all the detail you want from a guide. I personally recommend it for its photos as to supplement another guide which presents more facts. The area of accommodations is not covered and this would have been invaluable. ... Read more

This map needs to be updated. Major highways and freeways were missing. The place where we had the most trouble was trying to get around and through Pamplona. Major highways that had to have been started prior to the publication of this map were not included. ... Read more

A thorough guidebook
The LP effort for France is thorough and diverse with writers of different ages and interests. I have used it for my last two trips and it has served me well [Bordeaux, Massif Central, Basque Coast, Paris]. I tend to prefer Let's Go recommendations and Michelin Regional Green Guides for local commentary. But this is being nit-picky... as the only real drawback to LP is the weight. The easy solution is to rip the guidebook apart by sections and have what you need spiral bound for about $5 at FedEx/Kinkos. I even mix in other guidebooks when I do this.

Excellent Transportation Info
If you're traveling to different regions and cities within France via train, bus, or plane, I'd definitely recommend this book. It offers very useful getting-to and getting-away options. For instance, if you want to travel between Normandy and Etretat, it requires a rather complex series of transfers using buses and possibly some trains - there is no direct train route (as I assumed before reading up on it in this book). This book alerts you to issues and offers alternative solutions. (Benefit: avoid unexpected, time-consuming problems and enjoy your trip more).
I LIVE IN FRANCE
First, I have to say that I bought a Lonely Planet France in 2002; it was in Francs, not Euros, even though Euros were the main currency AND they were so annoying as to put the currency conversion on every page but not convert within the text.That forced me to buy the next edition, which was not really much different except prices were in Euros.

A History lesson
Just bought Andorran Memories,out of curiosity. I had heard of Andorra, never actually looked into it. This book is truly fascinating, from a historical, sociological and cultural point of view, the faces photographed in this book are quite telling, my favourite part of the book was The Spanish Civil War photographs, in an age where displacement of societies continues unabated, it is fascinating to see these faces, lost in thought, afraid, but yet full of courage.
