oppinion from Bulgarian citizen
Book is nice-give a lot of info.Unfortunately ,thing are changing really fast so don`t expect everything to be the way it is mention in the book -if you decide to visit By far the best guide on Bulgaria
This is a great guide covering everything from the best places to eat and the best hostels to stay for cheap backpackers to cultural history. Everything is arranged in easy to find geographic regions.Especially enjoyable is the small sections scattered thoughout on major historical figures. The glossary of Bulgarian terms is a little short but who would really understand you with your thick accent anyway informative and intersesting
I visited Bulgaria in 7/99 and travelled around for almost 3 weaks with a rented car. Before going there i have read everything I could find (books and internet) - this was the only book that gave good information,intersting details, and enlightments about Bulgaria. One must remember thata developing country such as Bulgaria rates change, places are beingclosed' and new open every days. However as for the hotels and restorantsmost of the details were pretty acurate as for the 'what to see' i havenever met a better guide. Condescending, little useful info, and woefully out of date.
The only things that were useful to me in this book were the maps, and even they were out of date.To read this book (written long ago in 1998), you'd think that Bulgaria was a.) boring, b.) dangerous, and c.) miserable.Bulgaria, as I discovered on a trip this summer, is none of the above:it is beautiful, warm, fascinating and an incredible amount of fun.Blue Guide should really go out of its way to update this guide to reflect Bulgaria as it truly is now: much more forward thinking, much more westernized, and very tourist friendly, with a ton of fascinating and (still) affordable things to do and to see.Spend your money on a better, recent guide.

Excellent Cultural and Historical Guide
The Blue Guide is a first-class travel guide to Bulgaria.The Blue Guide series does not focus on hotel and restaurant infromation but rather provides detailed information on history, architecture, culture, and geography.That is what the Blue Guide does, and it does it better than anyone else.I recommend the guide be used in concert with another guide such as one of the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide series for hotel and restaruant information.

A lot of history not very much practical information
This guide is rather lacking in a many areas. Most notable information on hostels and campgrounds and such. However, it contains a lot of historical background on churches and other areas of intrest in Bulgaria. Unforunately this information dominates most of the guide.If you are looking for a travel guide I recommend Bulgaria a Rough Guide it contains much more pertinent information for the world traveler. ... Disorganized
I found this book difficult to use.The descriptions of city sites are sorted alphabetically.Therefore, you have to know the name of a specific site in the correct language to find a description.If you don't speak Polish, Hungarian, etc, it's difficult to find what you're looking for.There are only a few maps of major cities in the guide and therefore it's difficult to find any locations outside of the major cities.This book does provide some decent descriptions of restaurants.The upside to the book is that it is the only one that I've found that covers such a diverse group of countries.I just wish that it was organized better and that it had more maps.

A Useful Guide?!?What a Joke!
Unfortunately, Fodor's chooses to flatter sites/hotels/restaurants that are not even worthwhile in this adjective-laced and over-priced guide.Many of the "magnificent," "remarkable," and/or"extraordinary" sites mentioned in this guide were far from it. It lacks any candor or frank descriptions.That's not all, it gives nodirections to hotels or restaurants and once again describes substandardfood as "wonderful."I am also curious to know where theserocket scientists came up with their definitions of nice, clean andexciting.The book is a bust, go with another guide, it was a waste of mymoney.If it could get 0 stars -- it would.

Could have been better
This book contains many useful phrases for travel in Bulgaria, but unfortunately, my copy contained double copies of pages 34-66, and no pages 67 to 99.Luckily, I have not yet encountered any emergency situations here, but If I had, I would have been at a loss for what to say!Upon bringing this to the attention of the publisher, DK suggested that I mail back the defective copy, at my own cost.

Indispensable!
I used this book on three trips to Bulgaria and found it an invaluable asset.The first few pages give you the bare bones information needed to get by in almost every common situation.
