5-0 out of 5 stars Presenting Prague
This is the best travel guide I have ever used.Prague is presented in a way that does justice to its beauty and storied past. The richness and detail of the (mostly) color images of the sites being discussed give the guide a usefulness that I have not found in other guides. It is one of the few travel guides that I will keep in my private library long after my recent trip to Prague and the Czech Republic has ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for general-purpose tourism
I recently spent nine days in Prague, including a day and a half of a group tour, and about five full days of touring on my own.I found all of the information in the guide to be accurate and up-to-date, and to be at an appropriate level of depth and detail.I was able to prioritize and choose what I wanted to see, and get to everywhere. The information on public transit (metro and trams) was very helpful.I traveled to and through all the primary areas of interest without any additional maps or guidance.Because I went with a group, the hotel was pre-selected (and not one that was in the guide), so I cannot comment on that aspect of the guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best guide book you can get
I have traveled the world over, usually I use the lonely plant series. But now that I have used the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Prague I am hooked. This is a fantastic travel guide, you could not ask for anything better. There are clear maps with photos and drawings, so you can find everything. Then for each item it goes into details. For example the charles bridge has a four page spread where is has a drawing of the bridge and then a description about each statue. It is so EASY TO USE, and it has everything you will need. I had this and small map and that was it for a four day trip in Prague. I didn't really need the map as the book has all the maps you need. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not as your only resource
This map is convienient (like the others in the series) because you can fold it in half and stick it in your pocket without it getting all ripped up.However, I ended up referring to other maps as well to verify where I was going. The Prague map is particularly inconvenient in that it divides the Stare Mesto (the central area where most tourists spend their time) in half, such that I frequently had to turn it over as I traced my path.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite brand of maps
I've become a loyal fan of Streetwise maps, and the Prague map is no exception. The detail and accuracy of the map is great, and the laminated format makes it very easy to use. I never get stuck trying to re-fold Streetwise maps, and they're easy to fold down to view just the panel you need, so that you're not so obvious as a tourist walking around with a huge, unwieldy map. Plus, you never have to worry about tearing or spilling on them!

2-0 out of 5 stars i agree, you do better for free
for all of the reasons described above, i too, like the streetwise series, but i didn't end up using this map...i'd say it rates fair/fine/ok.i had done some travel planning but upon arrival in prague found that the local/free/tourist maps showed more of central prague, better.just one specific example: the uzjed/petrin funicular was left off (or covered up by a key).and the flipping back and forth was inconvenient - something i'd expect and accept for central to suburb transition but not central to central locations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CZECH Phrasebook
Very consise and compact and easy to use.
5-0 out of 5 stars About the CZ phrasebook and the two earlier reviews
I wasn't surprised when I saw that the two earlier reviewers were from the US of A. They actually view it as the phrasebook's shortcoming that in the country at hand they actually speak some English as well. How ignorant is that?! Since the yanks probably won't know the answer to that either, here's the answer: Very. Most of the world does not speak enough English to adequately convey their sentiments, ideas, opinions, whole personality...but does that matter to angloamericans? No, they actually think that a travel experience will be as rewarding whether or not you speak thelanguage of the native residents. As long as they understand your Enligsh, all's well. I hope, for theirs sake as well, that some of these people see the error of their ways.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good investment
For only 8 dollars I think this book is a good buy. Sure, you will find people who speak English in the Czech Republic, but I think it would be 'slightly' rude that you didnt even make an effort to learn some key phrases in Czech before your visit. Czech is their official language, and if you want to have a real cultural experience rather than getting by on your English, then I would recommend looking into this product. This book will lend you some key phrases as well as background to the country and people of ancient Bohemia. I visited the Czech Republic also, and found that many of their street signs, signs in general were in Czech, and it was really useful for me to look it up in the phrasebook. Also as well as the dictionary, it has subject vocabulary, as in what to do when you're in a restaurant, what to say in a doctor's office, telling the time, things like that-mostly anything you can think of. The biggest plus of this product is that it is actually up to date, and gives you vocabulary for anything (even what to say on a date!) and isnt out of sync with the times. Also it was coveniently sized to fit into my small purse or pocket withouot being an incovenience. I think this product helped me in familiarizing myself with their culture before going there-so I wasnt as culture shocked as some of my other colleauges. I recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get a Different Guide
I like Rick Steve, but he dropped the ball on this book.Entries are confusing: he introduces a site, and then doesn't tell you how to get there. The maps are terrible. But the thing that really irked me was his section on driving in the Czech Republic. He said that there were road "tolls" you could avoid by purchasing a sticker for your car. That is just plain false. There are no tolls at all.If you do not purchase that sticker, the Czech cops will stop you and fine you anywhere from 500 to 15,000 Crowns.1000 Crowns = about $45.That's what our friendly Czech officer hit us with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.
This was a great book but we found that this paired with the Eyewitness book was even better.I like the personality and blunt opinions given by Rick Steves but when you need cut and dry info such as how to use the phone or which statue on the Charles Bridge is authentic then Eyewitness is great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting Prague!
Prague was almost a footnote in older versions of Rick's books, but now it has its own publication and it is loaded with information -- everything the saavy traveller needs to know. I always appreciate Rick's suggestions -- everything from what to see to how to behave appropriately when I'm there. I know I'll never be fluent in the local language, but with a few tips from Rick and his book in hand I'll be prepared. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST BUY for Prague travel
This book is dead on.We were in Prague for four days, and this book was an indispensible tool. The bar/club descriptions were honest, straight-forward and written as if by a friend who had been living there for six years.Beyond merely naming a bar, giving an address and some surface description, they go in depth, including what nights to visit which place. The restaurant descriptions were fantastic, and lead us to some of the best (and best priced) meals we had on the trip. The mapping system makes navigation remarkably easy.Get this book, go to Prague, and rest assured you will have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars a GREAT Guide
I must say that I'm VERY impressed with this guide for Prague. I've been a frequent visitor to the city for the past couple of years, and am FINALLY moving there this summer. This guidebook is great because it provides inside information for visitors like me-- people who don't want to look like tourists and want to take in the best of local culture and nightlife-- people who would rather try and speak even a little of the local language czech than flock to English speaking tourist traps.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely invaluable and the best by far of any guide we used
We have just returned from a trip to Prague and Vienna. This guide to Prague was absolutely invaluable and the best by far of any guide we used. Visiting Vienna afterwards, we sorely wished that they had written one on that city, too; the other travel resources we used were not nearly as complete or informative as your guide had been for Prague. We look forward to the publication of additional Avant guides in the future! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Traveling Companion
Reviewed by Sharon Hudgins, author of "The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East."
    5-0 out of 5 stars A well-rounded overview of a magical place
The Travelers' Tales destination books provide a fully-rounded picture of a destination and this Prague and the Czech Republic goes down like a pint of good pilsner. Despite story angles that are all over the map---in a good way---the chosen essays are consistently good in a way that's usually hard to pull off over the course of an entire collection. This is probably due, in part, to Prague being known as a refuge of poets, novelists, and those who aspire to be one or the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Czech it out!
I've never been to Prague, but traveled there by way of this book.David Farley deftly weaves together the contributors' essays about a city and state of mind that inhabits the dreams of many....Some of the topics and styles didn't pull me in immediately, but the feel of the book elevated them to a perfect place- like puzzle pieces fitting together and revealing a wondrous landscape, language and outlook.

This is an excellent guide to finding some of the real treasures in Vienna, Budapest, and Prague - the coffee houses. In this suscinct, yet detailed piece, you become very close to the rich and splendid aromas and bright and unique personalities and romance that each of these social "temples" have to offer. Not only has the author captured the essence of the coffee houses, but she also shares with us interesting historical details, perspectives and notes. Enjoy the comments and discriptions of these "museums" with special attention to one of my favorite subjects, architecture. Absolutely a joy to read and use as a compass through the wonderful streets of these absolutely fantabulous cities. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Cup of Coffee and More

    Editorial Review

The city of Prague has inspired a lot of fine literature, and Paul Wilson has done the English-speaking world a vast favor by compiling this anthology of 23 Prague stories. There are classics by the likes of Franz Kafka, Jan Neruda, and Ivan Klima, and lesser-known works making their English-translation debuts. There are autobiographical pieces, fiction, legend, stories from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, tales from the Soviet regime, and contemporary pieces from the Czech Republic. Ivan Klima's epilogue is titled "The Spirit of Prague," and after reviewing Prague's history--cultural and political--he concludes that paradox is at Prague's heart, and irony and ridicule are its primary tools. Both devices areemployed deftly throughout Wilson's anthology, providing clever, lyrical, and moving snippets of Prague's complex reality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photologue
Simply beautiful in its layout, this book explores the popular and hidden corners of this old city, untouched by the wars that so damaged much of old Europe. The photos are simply perfect in bringing the feel of Prague.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably great book at an unbelievably low price
Buy now!I was busy the day this book arrived in the mail but I had to stop and look through the whole book page by page - all 136 of them.Large format book with spectacular pictures of all the well-known and many of the lesser known sites around Prague.Every page is jam-packed with beautiful pictures and concise legends. Not an academic-type book but plenty of text present as well for those who can stop looking at the pictures long enough to read it.Highly recommended and worth many times its price.Only drawback at all is I would have liked to have seen more on Vysehrad and those 4 incredible statues in the park next to Sr. Peter and Paul Church but that is only a personal wish and in no way detracts from this spectacular book. ...
