5-0 out of 5 stars Living in Finland
This is a beautiful and inspiring invitation to enter the seasonal lives of middle class Finns. It demonstrates how Finnish architecture, design and art draw inspiration from and are sensitive to the natural environment. The section on Finnish summer houses is superb. An up-to-date directory at the end of the book is really helpful for someone like me planning a trip to Finland later in the year. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Helsinki Guide
This travel guide has nice pictures of Helsinki and nice color maps. The pull out map is especially useful and colorful. The walking routes are nice and I also like the excursions section. After reading this book the full Finland Insight Guide is probably not worth the price unless you really are spending a long time in Finland. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide ...for a 1st edition.
This guide provides good information on Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I cannot comment on Finland since it was ommited from our Scandinavian Tour. The information on historical places was more than enough and accurate. This guide pointed to us the exact location of rock carvings in the Tanum area (Sweden), something that the signs on location failed to do!. The suggested "green" routes were magnificent. Me and Jonas really felt that we did not waste our time and that every one of these routes (both in Sweden and Norway) were "golden" ones. The general maps are not detailed but those of the "green" routes are, with precise indications of views and panoramas. You don't expect accomodation listings in the "green" guides (that's what the "red" are for). We were surprised although that Michelin failed to give a star rating (we would give 3 stars) to the magnificent town of Alesund, but merely underlined it! If we did not experiment on our own we would have missed one of the most beautifull Norwegian towns in the "Jugend" style. I think that for a 1st edition, this guide is a very good effort. It can guide you to the splendours of Scandinavia and comparing it after our trip with other guides I think that I would go back with my Michelin again. ... Read more

Good value, well written and with pictures os good quality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and clever guide to a beautiful country
All too often, Finland has been unfairly treated by many snobbish travel writers - too clean, too expensive, too Northern. For many of those identifying Finland only with mobile phones, the history, the architecture and the landscapes of this brave, spectacularly handsome and exceedingly talented country is largely unknown. This guide tells the story and shows the pictures in a friendly, seemingly effortless and hugely informative way.5-0 out of 5 stars An American in Helsinki says thumbs up!
I lived in Helsinki for 4 months and traveled around a bit (to Kuopio, Karigasniemi and Ivalo, as well as eastward to St. Petersburg). This is the best guide to Finland I've seen in English. They give not only important tourist information (maps, restaurant and hotel recommendations, attractions, tips, etc.), but also great cultural and historical information that will help put all the tourist stuff in perspective for you.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars facts and only facts
For my 20-day trip to Sweden and Denmark, I picked up several travel books (Lonely Planet Denmark and Scandinavia, Fodor's Scandinavia, Michelin the Green Guide Scandinavia Finland, Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2003 by Rick Steves, and Frommer's Scandinavia). Out of all of these books, the most consistent and most accurate are Michelin and Lonely Plant books.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars In Search of Baby Lenin
Just what is this book?THE GENTLEMAN FROM FINLAND is a travelogue of sorts, but not at all in a traditional sense. Its nature is suggested by the author's own statement in the final chapter that "[t]he best travel, I could now confirm, was a process of ordeals, endured at the time and embellished later in the comfort of familiar surroundings."While the story surely has its origins in a real-life adventure endured by our narrator, its telling is just as surely enhanced and enlivened by the raconteur's embellishments.
5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable snapshot of one man's encounter with a nation
Set in 1987, The Gentleman from Finland: Adventures on the Trans-Siberian Express is a memoir chronicling mishaps that escalate almost into the realm of the bizarre. The author, a short, swarthy Mexican-American-Russian-Jew, boards what he believes to be the Trans-Siberian Express yet discovers two days later that he is on the wrong train, traversing the Soviet Union with a voucher that mistakenly identifies him as a Finn. He speaks almost no Russian, and is lost amid a strange land - an old woman steals his shoes, smugglers stash contraband under his bunk, and a beautiful woman rescues him from disaster yet mysteriously keeps reappearing, leading him to fear that she is with the KGB. Sometimes wryly humorous, other times fraught with tension, The Gentleman from Finland is a truly unique travelogue offering a memorable snapshot of one man's encounter with a nation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Mistaken Identity
Don't be mislead by the title: the "Gentleman from Finland" is in actuality a Silicon Valley baby-boomer whose childhood

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as inspiring as the cover would indicate!
To put this review in context - my wife and I travelled to Sweden and Finland this summer. She has family in both countries who we visited and stayed with.Much of the time was spent in rural Finland (Kuusamo and region). Our home is Thunder Bay, which is a small pulp-and-paper city (100 000) in rural Ontario.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I visited this country with my Finnish boyfriend in 2002.THe book was a great help. It helped me decide which tourist spots, shopping areas, historical sites and places of interest to check out.The only part that I didn't like was that it didn't touch too much on the smaller cities of Finland, but in general, it's a good buy.Definitely worth it, but make sure you get "Culture Shock, Guide to Finland" if you do travel to Suomi.Having a cultural view of this beautiful country is important.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Finnish phrase books
This is one of the best Finnish phrase books. It has colored margins to help find the section(s) you need. It's not very good for learning the language, but it does give a very breif grammer section. For anyone goingto Finland, buy this book. You will be glad you did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of lovely memories
Insight Compact Guides are great. This one has 12 routes for you to follow as you travel through this stunningly beautiful country. All the major sights are featured with pictures and a rating. I like this feature since - as you will find - the authors are pretty good judges of what is worth seeing and what is not. It's also nice to see the Aland Islands included as one of the trips. My wife and I had a tremendous time cycling around them in the early autumn of 1999 - when the sea and sky were deep blue and the myriad forests a swathe of gold and red. 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy on the pocket - delightful to read
