We took a cruise that stopped at 5 islands listed in the book and found the information provided helpful to interpreting the cruise line's descriptions and deciding which land tours to take.We were able to by-pass several expensive tours yet see the major sites on our own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the DK travel guides!
The DK books are my favorite travel guides and even though I've never been to Greece (yet!) I still like to page though the book. The pictures and diagrams are gorgeous and I like how the authors always bring the culture and history of the area into the discussion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unchristian
Dalrymple's 1994 reenactment of the 6th century Christian spiritual journey of John Moschos and Sophronios is fascinating, and its author a compelling writer. There, the value of this book ends.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book transcending itself
A trip through the Middle-East is most of all getting to know the Muslim world. The part of its' history from Byzantine times, meaning the presence and history of Christian settlements,is easily forgotten or at least figures in the background only. After having read this book the Middle-East will never be the same to me again. With the exception of the Armenian genocide,I was hardly aware of all tragedies which happened but most of all: which are today still happeningto the very old Christian communities of these countries. Not only are they in permanent danger of being killed, often with no punishment of the perpetrators from the authorities, and have they already been driven out of places where they lived since a 1500 years, also their ancient buildings, art, manuscripts, possessions of huge historic meaning, are being destroyed. As these communities and their material heritage represent much of the roots of Western civilization, this loss is a huge loss for the history of mankind. What's going on is a complete annihilation of the wonderful mosaic of different civilizations this world once produced. As since many years but now more than ever the Middle-East is the focus of world politics,"From the Holy Mountain" should be read by a much wider group of people than lovers of good travelogues or lovers of these countries only. A most important and readable study, implicating a plea for tolerance and respect, it should be a must-read for all politicians in the world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Zeal For Ecclesiastical Arcana
Yes! My title nabbed from the Amazon reviewer. Dalrymple's journey through the middle east, retraces the Byzantine traveller-monlk, John Moschos, author of, The Spiritual Meadow'. In the late C6th, accompanied by his pupil, he set to gather the wisdom of the desert fathers from Mt Athos, to Kurdisatan, then south through Syria, the Lebanon, Palestine, and on up the Nile. Dalrymple's trip in the early 90s was frought with tensions which today would cause an angel trepidation. The book was a revelation to me, filling in considerable gaps about the foundation and correlations of so many parties in the fermenting region. Muslim fundamentlists provide stiff opposition to Dalrymple's historical and current enquiries. But they are not unique in this. His evocation of place is crisply poetic and touched with memorable detail. His feel for people is very sympathetic. A work justly applauded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anotherbeautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is another portable, soft cover, coffee-table book with the same high standards as the one on the the Greek islands! It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! It is particularly nice that with the exception of the cultural history part, this book is basically not redundant with the Island book, covering the mainland as the title indicates.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but you'll need a more detailed guide
The colorful photos and diagrams found in the DK travel books are a big plus for some and a major detraction for others. Personally I think this is a great book to use while making preliminary travel plans because it's very difficult to decide where to go if you can't see pictures of it first. Then once you narrow down your choices you'll want a more comprehensive travel guide, such as the Lonely Planet guides, which contain better maps, travel information, hotels, etc, but which have very few photos. I'm holding off on giving this book 5 stars because it lacks that kind of detail. However, I still pull it off my shelf frequently when I want to look up someplace on the Greek mainland I have not visited before.

2-0 out of 5 stars love the photos but it needs more maps
On a 10-day driving trip around mainland Greece this guide proved a disappointment. There aren't enough city maps so you need to buy a Lonely Planet guide as well.I love the DK guides to London and Paris where the neighborhoods and sights are so intricate that the DK diagrams and walking tours are immensely helpful. The restaurant recommendations turned out to be rather poor from the DK guide.Frommer's and Lonely Planet were a lot more reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful memoir
This was a book I hated to see end.The descriptions of Corfu, family members and residents of the island, and wildlife were lyrical and loving. The author was a keen observer of his environment and was able to share his observations vividly with the reader. His humorous anecdotes were of laugh-aloud variety.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant summer read!
My Family and Other Animals is about a ten-year-old boy named Gerald who moves to the sun-soaked island Corfu, Greece with his family to escape the dreary and gloomy climate in London. There, he encounters many different animals and people. I absolutely loved this book because it was really funny. There was a lot of action in this book. Durrell lovingly described each and every animal that he owned. He also told every detail of the settings, so I felt like I was really in Corfu!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicate, Dedicated and Dignified
Arnold Joseph Toynbee's clear genius focused on a project of his younger years. It all started with Toynbee's insight into an enlightened contemporary reference to Gibbon's own account of De Administrando Imperio and to its author. Toynbee's mother also had a role in this " project " which is, afterall the work of a professor of byzantinology. The author's pertinence, honesty, erudition and writing style are, as usual, unsurpassed. If it were only by this book, and Toynbee would enter the famous historiographic gallery guarded by pillars such as Edward Gibbon and Lord Acton. However, my cultural hero, whose own interests ranged from International Affairs to Archives of the British Admirality and from anthropology and histories of religion to those of cities and sociology, did it greater than ever. Civilizations, wrote Toynbee, don't die. They only commit suicide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classical History Explained
Taking his cue from the De Administrando written by Constantine VII and other Byzantine historians before him, this thick volume may be Toynbee's greatest achievement. Throughout, he takes Constantine's own words with a grain of salt, especially about events before the Macedonian dynasty by applying a historical perspective to this entire period of Byzantine civilization (c. 800-1050)Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this guide
I am very disappointed with this guide. It had virtually no useful information about places I visited and its recommendations on hotels and restaurants were often off the mark. The contact information for hotels was outdated in many cases.

Since 12 years we always buy Lonely Planet guides for everywhere we travel. We like the Lonely Planet guide for its format and size, the hotel suggestions and the easy maps with the most important things to see and to do on it. What we miss are fine dining suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the Greek islands!
Like its companion book (Lonely Planet Greece), this is an excellent guide (but just to the islands)! It is concise, reads very easily, and gives good common-sense recommendations on what to see and where to stay. It is as up-to-date as you can reasonably expect with changing prices and euro/dollar fluctuations. A very, very practical guide from the budget tourist to middle class. Excellent pictures, very good maps, a fine job! It reminds me, in a way, of the Michelin guides to Europe. Having said that, Lonely Planet Greece gives you basically the same information on the islands, plus mainland Greece, for just a few dollars more. So unless you are flying into Athens and going only to the islands, you are probably better off with the parent book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a Lonely Planet book!
I own a LOT of Lonely Planet travel guides and have always been happy with the insider information they provide. This book, however, is lacking in MANY ways.First of all, there are hardly any photos.Secondly, it seems like the same island description has been pasted onto each island. It goes something like this, " This is one of the most beautiful islands....".Lastly, it falls way short in hotel listing. In Mykonos, for example, the book only list 3 hotels in budget, 3 in medium price range, and 3 deluxe hotels. You've got to be kidding! All that's listed as far as excursions in Mykonos is the number of a travel agent and a gay cruise. Sorry,..not interested...in either!! I want descriptions and suggestions.Did Lonely Planet really ever visit all of these islands?VERY disappointing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Use Let's Go Greece
I used this book for Crete and Santorini and it just didn't get the job done.Fortunately, I had Let's Go Greece 2005 with me as well.It had much more accurate and useful information, at least for the the two aformentioned islands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference guide
Organized by area of the city made it easy to find items of interest when traveling to that section of town.Even though the "Top 10" are highlighted for each area and overall, more opinion or comments to help choose among entries would be helpful as there is not enough time or energy to see everything listed. We also used the Lonely Planet "Best of Athens" which was also helpful, although organized differently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just enough information
This guidebook is easy to follow with a good mix of photographs and texts. The maps are very good, and as a seasoned traveller visiting Athens almost annually, I found most of the restaurant and site recommendations accurate. The information on areas that are a day trip from Athens, such as the Peloponnese and Delphi, was also very helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars outdated and just published
We were just in Athens....the new Athens Acropolis museum which was listed as a top 10 attraction is not open and will not be open for perhaps a couple of more years - this we found out while trying to find it - it's a huge construction site! A number of places listed in the book that we tried to find were out-of-business...we felt that the listings reflected the author's personal preferences rather than a good overall review of what there is to offer in Athens...the book is a great concept but was greatly lacking ... The Mediterranean light hits the Greek islands in a special way. For thousands of years authors have been trying to describe it, and Yann Arthus-Bertrand's sumptuous photography brings it alive. The 102 color aerial photographs in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and brilliant!
This is a truly unique book. These aerial photographs are masterful artwork. The photographer has captured some of the most enchanting spots in Greece with expert use of natural light. Strolling through this book over and over again makes me see a land that is even more beautiful from the air than from the land; makes me see a beauty that previously I could only feel. The photo of the Skiathos fisherman in his boat suspended in the sea is absolutely magical! Going through this book after you return from Greece takes you back. Reading it before you visit impels you to go. Exquisite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful bird's eye view of Greece
Whether or not you've been to Greece, a breeze through this book gives you a feeling of being there, taking you to the country's most popular and beautiful sites from a perspective unavailable to most. Although the colorsand uniqueness are difficult to portray, this comes very close. The photoof Zakynthos made me cry, and the photo of a village wedding stirred mysoul. It is a beloved addition to my collection, and an album ofunderstanding for those who have never seen it in person--simply lookthrough its pages and see Greece. 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely mind-bogglingly beautiful photos
I have never in my life seen such absolutely incredible photos. If you want to see Greece at its absolute best, nothing else can compare. There are a number of photos here that by themselves are worth the price of thebook. I can never recall having a book that is as captivating the 100thtime I look through it as the first time. The picture of the fisherman inhis boat seemingly floating on air is just simply the most amazing photoI've ever seen.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Map
This handy little map has all the details needed to enjoy the tourist attractions of Athens, while being sturdy and easily transported in your daypack, or even a deep pocket.GREAT to travel with!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but needs a Metro Update
This map is typical of the "Streetwise" series:Easily folded , LAMINATED (which makes it easy to write on, and keeps the map from falling apart when wet), and with handy stuff like metro stops, hotels. All landmarks the tourist needs to navigate around the town. The Athens one concentrates, naturally on the area around the Parthenon; the rest of Athens is on the other side. However, a new edition is certainly warranted as the metro now extends out to the airport, and the important hub of Syntagma Square isn't listed, and some Lat/Long lines would be great for us GPS-geeks.
1-0 out of 5 stars Smaller than expected

2-0 out of 5 stars I hope my trip to Greece is more colorful than this book
We bought this book to plan our Spring trip. The colorful cover is the only color included. And there were only two photographs in the entire 600 pages. We looked up several cities and historical figures who were mentioned on the History channel and they are not in the index. We saw no suggestions how to visit the Greek Isles if only having a trip for a week or two.The Parthenon is mentioned on two pages with no hints or suggestions how to visit. It is written from an encyclopedia as if they have never visited.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO HENRY MILLER: HIS BEST NOVEL!
I highly recommend this book to everyone. The book was written and finished on the eve of WWII. And the "Colossus of Maroussi" is by far the most enjoyable book I have ever read by Henry Miller. It is not too often that one can pick up a book and read over and over again as I have done with "Colossus Of Maroussi." Miller wrote this most beautiful of all books after having left France, and having finished his more notable "Tropic," books. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time introduced me to the book. Up to this time I was very well read. Having read all the classics, fiction, and non-fiction alike. Dostoevsky was my favorite, and I had read many books that have stayed with me all my life. Balzac, Gogal, Rabelais, Montaigne, Dante, Chaucer, Milton, Cervantes, Joyce, etc. Everyone that is but Henry Miller.
4-0 out of 5 stars He's different all right
I found this book lying in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia and began reading it.I've read a bit of Henry Miller before.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Greece, you'll love this book!
I've read Miller's book countless times and always feel that I'm traveling in Greece again. His writing and characters are larger than life (particularly Katsimbalis, the "Colossus" referenced in the title). The only book by Miller that I've ever enjoyed, his passion for the subject makes up for any shortfalls. One of a very few timeless tributes to an ageless culture. Vivid and alive!

5-0 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself to read Patrick Leigh Fermor
The NYRB Press has done the world a great service by re-issuing Patrick Leigh Fermor's travel books about his 1939 trek across Europe (A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water) and his stay with the Mani in Greece(The Mani). To call these "travel books" is to understate their value. Fermor is a supremely gifted writer with an encyclopedic knowledge of European history, and traveling with him through Europe on the eve of World War II is an education to equal anything you might pay a university $30,000 a year for. Fermor was a unique and original 20th century spirit -- talented, curious, intelligent, adventurous, brave and much more. He not only wrote and traveled, he inserted himself into the nexus of the war and carried out spy missions and acts of bravery that showed he was a man of action and conviction as well as a man of ideas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just one question!
Having spent some ten years in Libya,I found this to be an enjoyable, and very readable book on a most significant, though generally overlooked area of Greco-Roman antiquity. There is still a vast amount of excavation needed, and politics have not helped. There is one point on which I should take issue, however:The author refers to the city of 'Lepcis' in Tripolitania. Either she knows of an alternative spelling, or this is a serious typo. To my knowledge, she is referring to the city of Leptis Magna.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating topic marred by poor photos
The Roman ruins of Libya have been seen by very few Westerners in recent decades. They are in a remarkable state of preservation. The enormous basilica of Septimus Severus at Leptis Magna, while a ruin, looks like it could easily be put back together to it's former glory. The excellent state of preservation is due both to the desert climate and to the near complete absence of tourism. Eric Newby writing in "On the Shores of the Mediterranean" describes the difficulties he went through in arranging a visit under the Quadaffi government. This book was produced by Italian archaeologists who remarkably have been able to continue their field work during Libya's current international isolation. The book is marred by the poor reproduction of the photos. The pictures are almost all underexposed with muddy shadow areas, flat highlights and an overall lack of contrast. A pity but the book is still worthwhile for a look at sites that most people will never be able to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roman Civilizations-Buried by Sand
This book is magnificent. The first 180 pages are devoted to the western province of Tripolitania, where ruins of the Roman cities of Sabratha, Oea(present-day Tripoli),and Leptis Magna are located along the NorthAfrican coastline in the Gulf of Sirte. The next 50-odd pages cover theeastern province of Cyrenaica toward Egypt where the Greco-Roman cities ofCyrene, Apollonia, and Ptolemais are found.Read more
