5-0 out of 5 stars Great help!
We bought both this and the Lonely Planet guide for our trip to Budapest and lived by this book! I think the Lonely Planet guide is more for students backpacking across Europe, this is for the traveler not interested in only spending $20/day in Budapest. The recommendations were top notch, with the top attractions listed actually living up to the billing. All the restaurant reviews were dead-on, we ate at mostly reviewed restaurants and never had a bad meal. It felt like everyone in Budapest spoke English, so you really don't need a Hungarian dictionary, but it would be helpful if the back of the book had a slightly larger translation listing of foods, some important words like "liver" aren't included and can be a shock, especially in a pastry!

I am looking forward to visiting places that have been described in the book. This is our first trip to Budapest.

2-0 out of 5 stars Accomodation info already out of date
Although this edition was only published 2 years ago, the accomodation sections in various towns is already quite out of date .I suppose the accomodation situation changes quite rapidly in Hungary, even the 2005 edition of LP Eastern Europe has much more up to date accomodation info for Hungary, altough as a whole it has less info on Hungary of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource on Hungary
I lived in Hungary for a while, and this is a great resource for traveling around the country. The author captures the Hungarian spirit and quirkiness quite well, and the reviews of the restaurants, hotels, and attractions are usually accurate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concise (Cultural/Historical/Educational) Complete Guide
While the internet is virtually an (almost) unlimted source for information about any country, it is also an overload of too much information ... that is when you need a guide to help you sort it all out. Lonely Planet does *just* *this* for anyone who is interested in visiting and touring Hungary. I have been to Hungary three times in the past five years and was delighted to discover this wonderful book. While my primary purpose was to visit relatives, the opportunity to visit historical sites and experience the culture is always foremost in my mind. Since most vacations are limited to 2, 3 or 4 weeks - you need to know where to find what interests you and make the most of your European vacation. This is the primary purpose of this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a world long gone
Despite its rather blunt title: VIENNA TYPES is Dr. Emil Mayer's surviving masterwork of street photography. The plates are deeply moving & offer glimpses into life in that grand old city of 100 years ago. Like a Sleeping Beauty aroused by the careful ministrations of Edward Rosser, this collection of exquisite photgraphs is timeless & evocative.5-0 out of 5 stars ARTISTIC, MOVING IMAGES
Images such as those found in "Viennese Types" render words superfluous.Capturing a time long past, a serene turn-of-the-century Vienna, Dr. Emil Mayer has preserved street scenes perfectly representing individuals often seen, such as sidewalk vendors, window shoppers, a scissors grinder, a carriage driver, and more. All of these photographs are artfully composed, beautifully rendered. Most amazing, perhaps, is the intimacy and sympathy these images convey. It is almost impossible to view them without being moved.5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs of a vanished world
In photography when things turn out well it's often because there's been an especially graceful coalescence of art and science. The photography of Dr. Emil Mayer (the "Dr." was an honorary title in common use by lawyers in Austria) is a sublime example of that happy merging. Mayer was an enthusiastic practitioner, teacher, and proponent of bromoil process photography - a method that allows for a freedom of expression via a series of laborious chemicalmanipulations of the negative, and produces a monochrome print that has a softly grainy appearance, and a sort of quietude, in addition to effective, evocativepainterly depth. From this collection and the essays that accompany it one comes to understand Mayer had the soul (and the eye) of an artist, and the patience and skill of a scientist. The results are terrific.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to brush up on Hungarian
I took one term of Hungarian in college, and I've been to Hungary a few times (but only for a few days each time). So I tried getting this book to relearn some of the language before going back to Hungary this year.It helped me do just that, and I was able to converse with plenty of non-English speaking Hungarians. This is a well-written book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent New Hungarian Phrasebook!
Well, I am a native speaker of Hungarian myself, so I was quite curious to see this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Literate Guide
I travel extensively and, after long experience, I find the Lonely Planet guides the best, so I now buy them automatically and am never disappointed.Still, they do vary in quality. The Budapest guide, however, is among the best.
3-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
It seems like the Lonely Planet travel books are really hit and miss. Some are really great while others, like this Budapest guide, seem like little work was put into them. The sections titled Facts About Budapest, Places to Stay, Places to Eat, and Entertainment are pretty good (though still not as detailed as they might be), but I was disappointed with what I consider the most important section, Things to See and Do. For a city as big as Budapest it seemed like scant few pages were devoted to this subject. I also wish more photos were included, because it's hard to know whether something is worth going to see if you have no idea what it looks like beforehand.

2-0 out of 5 stars Vaguely useful
We did a thorough comparison of the Budapest Guide and the Budapest section of Lonely Planet's Hungary Guide. The extra information provided in the Budapest book was (for the most part) simply more detail about the material already reported in the nationwide guide. It was more conversational, more spread out, yet with no genuine added content.Reviews of eateries and lodgings were no more in-depth and only slightly greater in number.Take a pass on this one.Lonely Planet's Hungary Guide is roughly just as useful in Budapest, and has the added advantage of telling you about so much in this fascinating country that's outside the standard tourist line. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, effective--and best not left to the coffee table!
The author delivers a guide that the true European cafe wanderer will find eminently useful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It
This is an excellent guide to finding some of the real treasures in Vienna, Budapest, and Prague - the coffee houses. In this suscinct, yet detailed piece, you become very close to the rich and splendid aromas and bright and unique personalities and romance that each of these social "temples" have to offer. Not only has the author captured the essence of the coffee houses, but she also shares with us interesting historical details, perspectives and notes. Enjoy the comments and discriptions of these "museums" with special attention to one of my favorite subjects, architecture. Absolutely a joy to read and use as a compass through the wonderful streets of these absolutely fantabulous cities. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Cup of Coffee and More
As we prepare to visit Vienna for the second time, this book is helping us to prepare our itinerary adding this time many visits to those sometimes off the beaten track coffee houses. What a gem of a book, packed with so much valuable current information such as addresses, hours, etc., as well as historic data. Its definitely being packed in our carryon luggage along with a couple tried and true tour books. Here's to the author ... thanks to the last drop! How about some other city editions? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Has its ups and downs....
I brought the latest edition of TOBudapest, two weeks after it hit Amazon.uk, to Hungary with me this past October. That being said, I was a little let down.Granted, Budapest is a city that is still changing, establishing and re-establishing itself. However, I think Time Out missed the mark on several occasions here (and I'm a huge proponent of Time Out guides).

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Combination of Advice, Knowledge and Girth
The Rough Guide Hungary is a complete paper guide: both practical as wellas good in in-depth knowledge. Arriving in Hungary by plane as I did in theSummer of 2000, you feel you have arrived in a country where a completelystrange, vigourous and stimulating language is spoken and little elseexcept goodwill. This book has the capacity to guide you into this reallyforeign country, offering you several possibilities in the above situation, varying from the safe: 'take a cab but fix the price beforehand', to themore adventurous: 'take bus # 93 (red) to the metro terminal and continueyour journey to Budapest by taking the blue metro line to the centre oftown'. Whatever your choice, I found this is all excellent advice with nomistakes. The guide continues in this reliable way both in the capital andin the country side, but does more as it also describes Hungary's historyand culture in its own words, not copying textbooks.Boxes with extra, spicy information are included.Read more
