4-0 out of 5 stars Amsterdam travel guide
This is my 3rd or 4th Eyewitness guide that I have purchased. They give you a lot of info in a compact book. It includes not only points of interest but also provides the "must see". Each guide also includes maps, mass transit, translation of phrases, restaurant, hotel, and general tips to make your trip more enjoyable and safer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but...
I am giving this book 5 stars because I think it does an excellent job covering the city of Amsterdam. The illustrations are fantastic, the tips are helpful, all of the major points of interest are covered (and then some) and it is up-to-date. I'm a big fan of the Eyewitness travel guides, and this book certainly won't come as a disappointment to those who are familiar with their books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for travelers
We used an Eyewitness guide for our trip to London years ago and found it the most helpful of all the guidebooks we had purchsed. The real photos and accurate information made our first trip to Europe go very smoothly. As we plan our second trip, we have not been disappointed by the Amsterdam Eyewitness guide.Again, the striking photographs, maps, and well-organized information makes planning a trip a breeze. Our kids enjoy seeing the places we will visit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best travel guide around
I've used some of the Eyewitness Travel Guides on a trip around Europe, they were so useful that when I came home I've bought some more. They are more than travel guides, they are also a souvenir. I totally recommend them. Great pictures, great 3D street maps with suggested routes, great explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with information
I have used several different travel guides in the past, and the Eyewitness series is one of my favorites. They are colorful and loaded with images, but it's not just eye candy. The images shown are helpful to decide if an attraction interests me enough to actually visit it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get a more recent edition
Lonely Planet has a 2006 edition for Amsterdam--which you need (or one more recent) because so many museums are closed (apparently until 2008/09) and there is much construction going on in the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable and Informative Travel Guide
Over the past two years, I've purchased and used five Lonely Planet guides, and this one ranks among the top. Andrew Bender provides humorous yet accurate information on the culture and norms of Amsterdam as well as key surrounding areas (Den Haag, Haarlem, etc.) Day after day during our week-long trip, we turned to his guide for advice and weren't disappointed. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good list of cheap eateries
The value in "Lonely Planet Amsterdam" is in the thumbnail sketches of cafes and reasonably-priced restaurants. The descriptions of the establishments that I am familiar with were right on the money. They are grouped by neighborhood and have basic information, such as opening hours. I was disappointed that Indonesian restaurants were short-changed, because they "aren't authentically Asian." True, but an Indonesian rijstafel shared between half a dozen or more people is not too expensive and is an authentically Dutch form of entertainment. The biggest problem with the book is that it doesn't open flat. You need both hands to force it open wide enough to read comfortably and then it's hard to flip through the pages. And you will do a lot of flipping, because there's no good index to help you find things. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars tram lines inaccurate
This is an excellent street map.A nice touch is that it is covered in plastic, making it rain-proof.However, the marginal note says it was updated in 2004.This so-called update must have been done on the basis of out-of-date data. Some tram lines have changed their routes and some have been discontinued. In addition, no bus lines are given on this map. This map is recommended for visitors who do not intend to leave the tourist area, but the visitor who wishes to explore outside the tourist area and who requires more complete and accurate public transportation data should purchase a map at the government transportation office across the street from the main train station.Although many museums and other attractions are indicated on the map and referenced on the index overleaf, some museums and attractions are not found there.A visitor should also have a good guidebook to learn about other sights to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars A big help!
We spent a week in Amsterdam and used this map to get around.I would not attempt a foreign city without one of these maps. They are also useful for pre trip planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This was an invaluable tool for the two times I've visited Amsterdam. The map is very easy to read, has enough landmarks added tokeep you busy, and the "glossary" on the back of the map will ensure you never get lost.Whenever I hear of a friend visiting Amsterdam, I make sure they buy this map before setting foot in the country.I can't recommend this map enough. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Writing is a job too
This book is hilarious! Andsomewhat tounge-in-cheek. Relax and enjoy it! (This should have been a 5-star review, alas I clicked on the wrong star and I'm not able to change it.) A couple of reviewers and an acquaintance of mine are quite bothered by the fact that in My Dam Life Condon is unemployed and that his poor wife has to make up for his "laziness" by "struggling to make ends meet." Sean Condon is an author! What good would he be in an office from 9-5 everyday? This isn't his first successful book and no doubt he's pulling in the dough just as well or better than his wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amsterdamnation
Sean Condon gives us a precious gift; his own idleness. If he actually had something meaningful to do and an interesting life to write about, he'd be off doing it without so much as a see ya later.
2-0 out of 5 stars My 'dam pathetic unemployed life
I found this book to be a complete waste of time; the only reason I even bothered to finish it was because I had some of these (seeded?) positive reviews lingering in my mind and I kept expecting it to get better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Amsterdam without it
I went to Amsterdam twice last year and used this map both times. It is extremly durable as I normally kept it in my left rear pocket - still good as new after two trips. I like the laminate since I can use those erasable markers used for presentations to mark landmarks or places of interest. Once done, simply wipe them off and add new ones. The main map showing Amsterdam could be just a tad larger to show areas to the east and south. Bring this map and a small compass and you won't get lost. Worth every penny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good map except for metro & trams section.
The maps are actually very good. And I like the weather resistant finish (A real asset considering the climate).5-0 out of 5 stars map
I am on holiday in Amsterdam as I write. This is by far the best city map I have ever used.First, it is durable enough that I anticipate it will survive the entire stay. The street names are clearly indicated; the public transportation facilities are identified.Amsterdam can be a bit disorienting because it's a city build with concentric streets.North and South can be confused easily.I have found my bearings several times when I would have been lost without this map.If you are interested in finding you way about Amsterdam, this map will be interesting to you. ... I now own just about every travel book you can buy on Amsterdam. I am drawn to this one because it isn't too wordy - it provides nothing but the information you need without all the fluff and fuss you find in the other books. It also lists a number of places of interest that the other books don't.

2-0 out of 5 stars Never looked at it after the first time
I just returned from amsterdam and I brought some internet materials that I printed out (different articles) and two guide books, I never looked at this one while I was there.I dont think it has a lot of really useful information, there just arent a lot of details provided - it feels like it tries to cover too much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amsterdam travel guide
We have been very pleased with all of the Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides that we have purchased for cities we were visiting. The guides are concise, listing the 10 most popular sites to see under a variety of categories. The Amsterdam guide is exactly what we need to carry with us so we will have it as an easy reference.I expecially like the colored pictures along with the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite the Only Book You Need
I have used the "Top 10" travel guides on several trips to Europe. They are small and thin enough to fit in a purse, have great maps and are usually all you need. The "Top 10 Amsterdam" guide is somewhat deficient, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars September Trip
We recetnly traveled to Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp. We used Rick's book to select the hotels and the areas to visit versus the bigger name publisher review books (like Let's Go and Formers, etc.).We picked three hotels from his book. Two of the three hotels were great, while one was a bit noisy.Even the hotel that was a bit noisy was a clean, smart hotel in the St. Caterhine neighboorhod section of Brussels. We found his book and recommmedations to be well written, clear and true to form.We also used Fromers guidelbook, in campanion to Rick's, but did not find it to be local enought to our needs. We ate almost exclusively at the restaurants is his book, traveled to the sights, used the train systems and used the maps in his book for our trip.Sometimes when you use a book like this you get one or two great places to stay or to eat, but, with his, it was truely a satisfying experience to go to his book's places and come away satisfied.
