5-0 out of 5 stars Without this book Poland wouldn't have been so much fun!
I'd wonder how much time and frustration it would take finding out all this in depth information about the country and it's attractions myself. Especially since we didn't know much about Poland in the first place. It was a true blessing having this book around, especially since many Poles at places you need it most often don't speak English or German. Only price information should need some adjustment (which might have something to do with EU membership related inflation?). I used the print which was updated in Jan 2005, but some prices already doubled!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Poland travel book
I recently went to Poland for the first time and found this book to be an absoutely wonderful guide to Warsaw, Krakow, and the Auschwitz concentration camps. All too often guide books that cover an entire country lack the kind of detail a traveler needs, but this book did not suffer that problem at all. The section on Warsaw was actually better organized and contained more detailed factual information than the DK book dedicated solely to that city. This was the only book I needed to help me get around Krakow and Auschwitz as well. I can't speak for the hotel and restaurant recommendations in the book because I never used any of them, but as far as information about historical sites and points of interest this is an outstanding book.
5-0 out of 5 stars -EXTREMELYHELPFUL-
Over the last several years eleven members of my family have made trips to Poland. Each time, we've visited a different part of the country. Our most recent trip was in April/May 2002. We all have several different travel books about Poland that we've purchased over the years. However, without consulting one another, three of us carried their copies of this book with them, and pulled them out when we met in Warsaw. We all agreed that this is the best book on traveling in Poland. As we toured through the country, we would read about the places that we would be visiting the next day.The book's information was always good and easy to locate. Even now that we've returned, we're still exchanging phone calls with advice to read a certain page in the LONELY PLANET- POLAND book for some information that we'll need for our next trip.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos and information
I enjoyed looking through this book prior to my recent trip to Poland.I am an avid photographer, and seeing some of the sights in the book prior to the visit really helped. The maps and diagrams are very good for giving the reader an idea of what to see in the various areas. This is a great book for someone who has never been to Poland.

This publication was very helpful.I will use it in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Phrase Book
This is definitely a good phrase book, the pronunciation guide words are a big help. Depending on how far you plan on going with your polish studies, makes a big deal when it comes to purchasing this product. If you are looking to pick up on a few important phrases or common words, this book will serve its purpose. If you looking to learn a bit more than basic communication. I still recommend this book in addition to some other Polish self-learning courses, preferable an audio or CD-ROM tutorial. Like Eurotalk or Rosetta Language Online. This book will help you commit to memory some of the things these programs teach you, while your at the office or out and about, and need a convenient reference to check your memory against. Overall this is a good product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book containing much more than justfood recipes
This is really an unusual book, the authors share their great knowledge not only about Polish food and dishes, especially the dishes which are unusual outside of Poland. They describe how Polish cuisine developed through history, they explain how to read a menu in the restaurant, how to shop for food.. and all of this information is in a very concise form - also with the dictionary of Polish "food" language, the dictionary of Polish dishes, recipes, beautiful photographs.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for anyone traveling in Poland.
Eat Smart In Poland is "must" reading for anyone traveling in Poland for business or pleasure. The Peterson's provide the reader with a rich historical perspective on the origins and varieties of Polish food;extensive background on regional dishes, and easy-to-use menu guide to helpmake "surprise-free" selections from restaurant menus; acomprehensive glossary of foods and flavors; Polish phrases for orderingand buying food; handy shopping tips for outdoor food and spice markets;;and recipes to preview the taste of Poland before departure. Theinformative and engaging text is wonderfully illustrated throughout with"on location" color photography by the Peterson's, and withblack-and-white illustrations by Susie Medaris. 5-0 out of 5 stars a step closer to the mystery of the Soviet Empire ;-)
Ryszard Kapuscinski is a guru to many people in Poland, and his books were always received with unending awe - because he traveled, when hardly anybody else could o anywhere apart from other countries of the Communist bloc, and moreover - he could write about what he saw... I still marvel how he managed to write so many things, which were in principle against the system, and still get published, but it is another question (Polish censorship was maybe not that tight or not that clever, or - most likely - clever enough to allow the chosen one his writing in the name of relative peace???).
5-0 out of 5 stars Transcendent
Think of Dante's ability to create entire worlds.Think of Dante's skill at capturing the largest of themes and extracting their essences.Kapuscinski's Imperium is indescribably more than memoir, travel stories, or USSR history. If you relish writing of the highest caliber, read this book. You will be rewarded on every page.Along the way you will also come to know the world that existed behind an Iron Curtain for most of the last century. This is the work of an accomplished master who has distilled 54 years of observations and 36,0000 miles of travels into wisdom, insight, and poetry.I certainly wish that more than 5 stars could be awarded.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Walk on the Dark Side
My grandparents left the territory of what would become the Soviet Union long before the 1917 Revolution. They came to America and I thank God they did.Whenever I read about the USSR, I always realize that only a couple of small decisions saved me from being born there, or more probably, saved me from being wiped out there, since I was born during World War II.Fate has a way of creating circles, though, and I've wound up teaching English to people from my grandparents' homeland. It's curious. Many of them are ethnically exactly the same as I am, but it is always obvious that there is a huge cultural gap.OK, they didn't grow up in America.I have never set foot in any part of the former USSR.I have spent the last 14 years peering into their pasts, constantly wondering why they are predisposed to think this way, act that way.I have thought long and hard about the issue, discussed it with many of my students, read their stories, listened to many more.A book like IMPERIUM goes a long way towards helping me understand that difference between me, "the one that got away" and them, "the ones that didn't".

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for improving your pronunciation, but...
One has few options for learning the rudiments of Polish for the purpose of traveling there (which I did for 2.5 weeks; just got home). This kit includes the Lonely Planet phrasebook (2001 edition) and a CD with 18 tracks of "listen & repeat" audio. The phrasebook is fine, but I actually found the Berlitz phrasebook (which I purchased separately #9812463518) to be better organized and more consistent in pronunciation. The real problem with this kit is the audio CD.Here are the problems: (1) there are no real phrases, just individual words; that's fine, but you need to have a few phrases to get at least some grasp of the grammar, in case you need to (and you will!) modify a phrase for a particular circumstance. (2) the booklet that shows the content of each track does not always match what is actually spoken on the CD.Sometimes, what is spoken is more or less than the printed text in the booklet, but on a few words, it was completely different.Needless to say, that's a problem. (3) the tracks are layed out thematically, which is perfectly logical, but the thematic grouping could be much better. (4) If you're purchasing a language kit for travel, which this is, your core words/phrases should be for greetings, accommodations, transport, eating out, & shopping. While one can debate which words are most likely to be used, and therefore most needed to learn, on a CD that is trying to compress this information into approx. 60 minutes, I find little need to know "husband", "wife", "cruise ship", etc.A related problem was that several words appeared multiple times on different tracks!Space is already limited, how do certain words find their way onto 2 or 3 tracks? That's simply poor execution on the part of Penton Overseas.Shortly after I started on the CD, I bought the Berlitz phrase book, and then spent a lot of time over several weeks making my own flash cards with real, comprehensive phrases for a array of situations and questions.Tedious to do, but much better for ensuring you're able to speak coherently and spontaneously. When the audio CD doesn't even have a phrase for "What time is the next train to Krakow?" you know you have a problem.Granted, the CD had "what", "time", and "train", but we should all seek to speak as a local would, perhaps not with as diverse a vocabulary, but at least using basic grammar correctly to form real sentences.Don't apply this review to all Penton Overseas products.Their "Learn in Your Car" series is fantastic (I've used the French and Spanish), exactly what you need, with tons of relevant words and a steady progression into meaningful, complex statements.Travel Talk was a real disappointment, and I hope they can make some improvements here. ...
