Pretty pictures, no details -- maybe good for riding a tour bus.
This book looks impressive, but when I tried to get down to details of actually traveling in Portugal, they just weren't there.
Everything You Need and More
I have just returned from a 10 day trip to Portugal during which this travel guide was a valuable companion.The layout of the book is easy to use and it is chocked full of extra information on wine regions, the making of port, cork and regional food.While I did not use the guide to select hotels, it was great for information at the various stops.Highly recommended!

Great Book!
I have to say, eyewitness travel books are definately the best travel books there are. They provide many pictures, and explain the history of places in portugal. This book gives a brief overview of everything, you do not have to read big lengthy travel books to find out about a place. The pictures are very helpful, and they allow get a glimpse of what you are going to see, if you deciede to go there. Although, if you want a very extensive travel book, I would suggest something other than this book, lonely planet has some good travel books. A Good Tool, But Not The Only One
We used this atlas for a 2 week road trip through Spain, and found it to be very helpful. I had also mapped routes using various internet sources, and having this atlas was better as we could change our minds and pick other routes, if we felt we wanted to. Sometimes the numbers of the highways didn't match exactly, but that can happen at anytime, anywhere. Maps and atlases are frequently outdated as soon as they are printed. But this one gives the best information available here in the States, I think.
Ready to experience the road in Spain
Very good atlas, even found my friend's village high above the Ebro.

A very good travel guide!!
I found this travel guide really useful.It gives you a lot of information about places to see, things to go, how to use the public transport, accommodation,etc... Apart from that, this book also gives you a brief historical explanation of the city, its origins and development which I quite liked.
Another top-notch Eyewitness Travel Guide
Eyewitness Travel Guides are really great value and this is a very nice guide book.Take an Eyewitness Guide and a Cadogan Guide (if available) and you will have all the information you might possibly need.Forget the competition.This is the kind of intelligent tour guide you have been waiting for. First-timer in Lisbon?
Just back from a week in Lisbon, we used this guide & found that we could have spent a month or more & still not have come anywhere near exhausting the possibilities shown in the book. The previous reviewer made the point that this guide (1997 edition) is a bit out-of-date; true, but what it does include is excellent & very well presented. The book is a convenient size, has a sturdy cover, & is easy to carry with you as you explore the city. I usually go for Lonely Planet travel books, but chose this one instead because of its excellent illustrations. For your first visit to Lisbon, I don't think that you can go wrong with this book. By all means, go & see this marvelous city, an intriguing mix of old & new, but be sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes; Lisbon is built on 7 hills, & everything is either up- or downhill. The walkways are paved with stones & are not smooth, but that is part of the charm of the city. We plan to go back again. ... Read more

The Best or Second Best Available
There are two strong books on Portugal - my opinion - and the two books are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which I personally prefer or Lonely Planet Portugal. These two books are both approximately 500 pages and both are tremendous efforts. They are well balanced guides with lots of photos, maps, history, etc. Both are clearly 5 star guides.
Lonely Planet Portugal
I enjoyed the book Lonely Planet Portugal. I will be taking it along on my upcoming trip and I am sure it will be a great help to have with me. Lot's of great information!

Overweight, stale, out of date
I have used the Lonely Planet guides in Asia, the Middle East, and in Europe. Lately, they seem to have lost their way. Originally, the LP guides were for people who had travelled at least a little bit before and needed some pointers to an area. The guides usually had some sort of walking tours in the cities they indicated. Their guides have become filled with useless colour photos of generic scenes, The quirky, fresh information has disappeared -- In the summer of 2004, I used the LP guides for both Portugal and Spain. I was traveling for about three months. I had been in both places before and had used a LP guide. The most recent guides are stale and minimally updated. They are also occassionally misleading; especially concerning food. Sadly, the LP guide to Portugal is not worth the weight that goes along with carrying it. ... Read more

THOROUGH AND CONCISELY ACCURATE
For such a small country, Portugal has a wonderfully varied and diverse cuisine.Until now, the only other book that gave it any justice was Jean Anderson's "The Food of Portugal."This book is right-on with regional specialties like the "queijada" of Sintra, and many other delights.
