5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day
This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good Start
I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product
We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try.My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun.I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. ... Read more

I have used these guides for my travels in Ireland, London, Scotland, Rome, Florence, Venice, Switzerland, Germany and Amsterdam. These have to be some of the best guides ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars To plan your trip
Eyewitness Guides are beautiful, gorgeously illustrated books on glossy paper that are perfect for planning a trip but not so good for carrying along with you. But they don't need to be! I used the guide to Spain to plan my 5-city itinerary, including a stop in Ronda which I'd never heard of but ended up being one of the highlights of our travels. This guide gives you a general view of the sights to see, with many photos and maps. But especially in a country like Spain, the wise traveler makes his or her first stop the tourist office--there's one in every city and many towns. That's where you get your map, the info on walking tours, a schedule of museum openings and closings, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rick's advice and judgments are helpful
We have just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Spain and Portugal, using the Rick Steves 2006 guides to those two countries. We also carried the Michelin Green Guide, and this was a good complementary pair.We appreciated the fact that Rick tells the reader: this museum is boring, another museum is underrated and worth visiting, the Costa del Sol is gridlock, etc. - in other words, he makes judgments and offers frank advice where other guidebooks are politely descriptive.Michelin has more detail and lists more places but makes fewer judgments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bundle with Party Spain
What a great guide. Rick Steve's told me so many chill, off the beaten path things to do in Spain and then I picked up my Party Spain guidebook and had the most fun and social days and nights. What a great combination of books.
1-0 out of 5 stars Steves' Spain- not the color one!
I was disappointed with this order. I had previously borrowed this book from a friend and loved it. It was most helpful while in Spain. However, I was surprised [and felt fooled] that THIS version has almost none of the glossy color photos that another seemingly same edition had.Misleading description. ... Editorial Review

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nervesof first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the mostjaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still givinginsights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations anditineraries for those with less time than money. 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
This was our only reference guide to 6 weeks in Spain. We tried to use it for Hotels and buses and trains and all of the things a traveller would need to know. Instead of useful information, we were assaulted with so many adjectives and adverbs that bordered on stupidity, we almost threw the book away. It does contain some information of value if you can get passed all of the pompous verbiage. We did use the book for some things, but important information could be a great substitution for many adverbs and adjectives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nada
This volume is so thick and so heavy that when it arrived, I couldn't wait to dig and delve into it for my upcoming trip to Spain. Our accomodation and flight plans already made, I was most interested in details about the Northern provinces we'll be driving around. Lonely Planet Spain does not seem to contain any details that don't have to do with hotels/hostels, restaurants, or public transport, or other practical topics. We were more interested in soaking up the flavors, the ambience, and the culture of the country and its people, its customs and traditions, its arts and its music. Guess it's just as well, as this tome would probably throw our luggage over the airline's weight limits.
1-0 out of 5 stars YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS GUIDE
I've purchased and relied on several Lonely Planet Guides.Unlike the other guides, the Lonely Planet Guide to Spain was not useful or helpful.Although I travelled to Spain in 2005, the 2005 edition's information concerning prices for lodgings, food, transportation and attractions was already out of date. One wonders when it was last updated. Moreover, the book is bulky and poorly organized, making it difficult to pinpoint information. Finally, information concerning secondary cities and towns is impressionistic at best. The Lonely Planet Guide to Spain was a disappointment, poor value and--most importantly--a poor guide to Spain. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 2005 version and save some money
I just got back from Spain a few days ago, having used the 2006 Frommer's Spain to plan our trip.None of the entries have been updated to reflect 2006 pricing for entry fees to museums, etc.The book has a small section in the front called "What's new in Spain" or something along those lines, but the rest of the book does not appear to have been updated for 2006.We ended up spending more than we had expected at almost every single place we visited on Frommer's advice due to the fact that the pricing was outdated. In hindsight, I would have saved some money and bought a used 2005 version. And FYI, most attractions have student discounts which knock up to half of the admission price off, so don't leave your student ID at home if you have one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together - excellent guide for Spain
    Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together.
1-0 out of 5 stars The New 2006 Frommers Review
Note: This is for anyone contemplating purchasing the new 2006 travel guide of Spain by Frommers. Don't waste your money. Although I have purchased over 30 Frommers books in the past and enjoyed each one, the Spain book was awful. In Madrid, the book lists 20 or so "Top Attractions" (which is customary for Frommers). However, try to read about these attractions (e.g. what they are, hours of operation, etc.) and you can only find about half of them in the book. How do you know if it is worth treking across town for something that has no description?

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely reflection of Spain
Published in 1968, 'Iberia' is James Michener's tribute to Spain, drawn from his travels there beginning in the 1930s through the late 60s.Not only does he describe the different regions of Spain, but as he does in his novels, he delves into Spain's culture, politics and history and even its ecology (there is a beautiful chapter written about Las Marismas, a large swampland in the south). This is a wonderfully written and fascinating book, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about or travel to Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spain and family
In the summer of 1976 I read this book shortly after Franco died and before I arrived for a years's study in Madrid. I found it a terrific read. I arrived in Spain with more knowledge than most of my American friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Iberia prepared me for a memorable visit to Spain
I read (and looked at) Iberia while preparing tovisit Spain in 1969. I had already read Hawaii andCaravans by Michener, which are 2 great stories, but this photo essay about Spain astounded me. Although Ithought I was prepared, I knew how tospeak Spanish, I had lived in Perufor about 3years, I had seen bullfights, I knew aboutgeography, etc,Michener's short but in depthreflections about places in Spain made mehungryfor a trip there, to try to experience some ofwhat he wroteabout. The photos are an integralpart of this book, I can't remember thename ofthe photographer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and tough the Streetwise Map
The Streetwise Biblao was sure a helop to me as a tourist. Bilbao is a city in which few speak English (even at the hotels) and I found the map a godsend. It was to scale and accurate even as to the difficult Basque spelling of words. I had another map with me (It will go un-named) and it was a joke. I've come to rely on Streetwise over the years and have neve been disapointed except when they don't have a title for the city I'm visiting.

3-0 out of 5 stars old
This map is generally useful and the plastic format is very convenient, but although this site says the map is c. 2001, the map I got was a 1996 version, and therefore missing some significant developments since then, e.g., the Raval Rambla.

This book looks impressive, but when I tried to get down to details of actually traveling in Portugal, they just weren't there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need and More
I have just returned from a 10 day trip to Portugal during which this travel guide was a valuable companion. The layout of the book is easy to use and it is chocked full of extra information on wine regions, the making of port, cork and regional food. While I did not use the guide to select hotels, it was great for information at the various stops.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I have to say, eyewitness travel books are definately the best travel books there are. They provide many pictures, and explain the history of places in portugal. This book gives a brief overview of everything, you do not have to read big lengthy travel books to find out about a place. The pictures are very helpful, and they allow get a glimpse of what you are going to see, if you deciede to go there. Although, if you want a very extensive travel book, I would suggest something other than this book, lonely planet has some good travel books. Overall, really good, and the sites in Portugal are absolutely beautiful! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dense, readable, helpful
A city like Madrid has centuries of art, culture, history, and cuisine to explore. It's universities lead the world in selected areas of research, and it's museums preserve not just the world's treasures for Spain, but Spain's inheritance for the world.Even ignoring the nearby country and other cities, there is a huge amount to know about this complex place and its people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Exploring Madrid
We just returned from our trip to Madrid and this book was fantastic. My sister is abroad there and my family members have all gotten different guides for their visits, but I have now loaned out both copies I had of this guide, because they found it to be much better than theirs. It has great breakdowns of the areas of Madrid and maps that are all cross-referenced.It also includes a section on Toledo that we found to be very helpful on our day trip there. We were very pleased with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness is the best travel guide!
I'm taking my second trip to Europe in September...Madrid... and again referred to my favorite travel series....Eyewitness.You really can't beat the Dorling Kindersley publishing group for travel books. As I am a little ADD, the fact that not only do they offer a very reader friendly book, but that they also chock it FULL of pictures is a huge plus.To me, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I have to give Eyewitness my seal of approval.I have been relying on Eyewitness travel guides for about 10 years now and so far, I haven't found any other travel guides that come close in comparison. ... As is true of DK's Eyewitness books, this book is full of fantastic pictures. It's great to wet one's appetite, but doesn't really have enough meaty information to help one prepare to visit Andalusia. It's one saving grace: great maps.I recommend this book, but not alone. This is a great companion to The Rough Guide to Andalucia.

I love these books. They give brief informative descriptions along with tantalizing photos in all areas.I like very much the historiccal timeline in the beginning of each book.Although brief, it gives a great sense of what was going on throughout time in the particular location. This book starts with all history from 1000 BC.I love the pictures and cross sections as well as the brief and concise snippets on many interesting towns, sights etc.It gives a very strong visual and overview of many places so you can decide where you may actually want to visit. Of course there areth erequisite reccomendations for restaurants, hotels and travel options. These are also brief and you may want a different book or travel agaent for more suggestions in this area. ... Back in the summer of 2003, I visited a former seminary roommate in Leon, Spain.I showed up a couple of days before his wedding after backpacking through Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Madrid. While strolling together through Leon, my Spanish friend remarked that people thought I was a "Pilgrim" because of my clothing and backpack.I asked him to clarify, and he replied that Leon was on the path of the Camino Pilgrimage. Thus began my interest in the topic.

Instead, she embarked on a 37-day walking trek across Spain with her friend Tom Pfeffer. The two prepared and trained for a year before making the historical pilgrimage from Roncesvilles on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees to the Cathedral of St. James in the city of Santiago, a journey commonly referred to as "the Camino."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Tool, But Not The Only One
We used this atlas for a 2 week road trip through Spain, and found it to be very helpful. I had also mapped routes using various internet sources, and having this atlas was better as we could change our minds and pick other routes, if we felt we wanted to. Sometimes the numbers of the highways didn't match exactly, but that can happen at anytime, anywhere. Maps and atlases are frequently outdated as soon as they are printed. But this one gives the best information available here in the States, I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for exploring/living in Spain
A family member gave me the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Spain as a bon voyage gift, and it has proved an essential guide on what to see, do, and eat in Spain. As someone who will be spending a bit of time in northern Spain (four months), the Eyewitness Guide has proved invaluable on excursions to nearby cities (including Madrid). Since Spain is full of thousands of monuments, churches and cathedrals, bullrings (for those who, like me, oppose the inherent cruelty of bullfights and animal abuse in Spain, one can always appreciate the architecture of famous bullrings), museums, palaces, monasteries and other places of interest, the Eyewitness Guide gives you the best of the best, with brief synopses, maps and must-sees in museums, street maps, photos, historical backgrounds and more.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Guide, Beautiful Coffee Table Book!

I read the reviews for the previous edition of the Let's Go Spain & Portugal book, so I was expecting a book with recommendations that might not always live up to my traveling standards. And that's what I got.

When English sheep shearer Chris Stewart (once a drummer for Genesis) bought an isolated farmhouse in the mountains outside of Granada, Spain, he was fully aware that it didn't have electricity, running water, or access to roads. But he had little idea of the headaches and hilarity that would follow (including scorpions, runaway sheep, and the former owner who won't budge). He also had no idea that his memoir about southern Spain would set a standard for literary travel writing. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does Exactly What It Sets Out to Do
What a pleasure it was to read this book.I just came out of National Poetry Month here on the NH Seacoast -- six weeks (it's expanding in both directions from April) of poetry readings with a festival of jazz and poetry as its centerpiece.I attended, hosted, read at, and otherwise participated in nearly 30 events during this period. When it was over, I needed a break; my brain hurt.At that point, I ran into a bus-driver friend who is also a reader.I asked him what he was reading and he recommended Driving Over Lemons.I usually plan my reading months ahead of time; but this time I bought it on impulse. What a treat.Totally laid back.Exciting but not sensationalist.Interesting but not preachy.A cast of genuinely quirky characters -- thankfully, not a "normal" one among them. And sheep, dogs, herbs, heat, flies. All bisected by a willful river. If you approach this book desiring anything more than something that is a simple pleasure to read, you're doing it a disservice. It certainly got my mind out of poetry long enough for me to regain my balance so I can now go back in fighting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Provence or Tuscany either
I opened this book with great anticipation because of my previous happy trips to Provence with Peter Mayle and Tuscany with Frances Mayes. Though Stewart's reporting of his experience as an ex-pat living on a rustic farm in Spain is serviceable and may be useful to someone planning a comparable adventure, the book never achieves the transporting quality of the best of this genre. When I closed it (half-way through), I missed enjoying that delicious sense of having made a trip to a new place without leaving my own armchair.

4-0 out of 5 stars On the Sunny Side of Life
Chris Stewart has led a life many of us only dream of.As a teenager attending one of the most prestigious boarding schools in England, he played drums in the very first incarnation of the English rock band Genesis (Phil Collins was the fourth drummer). One imagines Peter Gabriel being attracted to Stewart's optimism more than his drumming ability.Unlike drummer Pete Best of the Beatles, however, Stewart quit the band rather than waiting to get fired. He went on to become a sailor, sheep shearer, travel writer, marry an attractive (and understanding) woman, and father a beautiful girl. And now pen a bestselling book on rural life in southern Spain.

    Editorial Review

Known as the Camino, the Santiago de Compostela Camino is a famouspilgrimage that has been undertaken by people for centuries across northern Spain. It is saidthat this 500-mile path lies directly under the Milky Way and that it reflectsthe energy of the star systems above it. Facing her sixth decade of life onearth, writer and actor Shirley MacLaine decided to go on this trek. She wasn'tsure why, she only knew that the Camino had been traveled for thousands of yearsby "saints, sinners, generals, misfits, kings and queens. It is done by theintent to find one's deepest spiritual meaning and resolutions regardingconflicts in Self."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Past-Life Pilgrimage
In the Nineties, Shirley MacLaine traveled to Spain to walk the pilgrimage trail that ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Along the way she experienced foot blisters, wild dogs, autograph hounds, paparazzi, and spiritual visions. These visions gave Ms. MacLaine glimpses of a past life as a Moorish girl during the time of Charlemagne. They also re-introduced her to an old friend and spiritual mentor, John the Scot, who took this opportunity to share some esoteric teachings.
1-0 out of 5 stars What a mistake- save your money
Well, I suppose there is something for everyone, but this book was not for me.I even question if someone could even write such a diluted, empty book based in ridiculous illusions of spirituality. In fact, it seemed that one of her top priorities was proving that at 60, young men are still attracted to her.Who cares?I personally feel that she never did the walk but bases her experiences in loose facts read elsewhere that consequently allow her to give the superficial appearance of having walked the ancient pilgrimage route.
