5-0 out of 5 stars Simply an Excellent Guide: Great Visuals
I first discovered these books by accident in a Stockholm bookstore. I had just come from Gothenborg by train and was a bit dazed. The book I bought by accident was in swedish but it still useful because of all the photos, cut away views, museum pictures, and maps and historical details. When I got home I bought a pile on Amazon.com of different places that I was going or had visited - but in english.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, great layout, easy to read, informative
We're planning a trip to Stockholm in Spring 2003. This book is great for those pressed for time, as it gives short overviews of sights in Stockholm, by neighborhood. My only complaint: I wish it had more suggested itineraries. Beautiful pictures and interesting historical perspective throughout, not just in the introduction (as in many guides).

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Excellent "On-The-Go" Quick Reference
This book is wonderful! Aside from excellent descriptions of hotels, shopping and tourist sites, the "street finder" is very useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the pictures! Loved the info!
I usually like Eyewitness Travel Guides, and this "Sweden" issue was also as useful as the others I have owned.I am glad Stockholm has its own chapter and in great detail. The scenery pictures are nice, and graphics explaining detailed floor plans of buildings and museums are very useful. The pictures alone are enough to make me want to go there! I also like the Traveler's Needs section, especially the accomodation divided in categories of location and price. Although accomodation nowadays is easy to find from the internet, Eyewitness has saved me a lot of precious time trying to compare each hotel between websites. I would recommend anyone who is going to Sweden to get this book. You will get all the information you need, and more! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and with Attitude
I lived in Sweden for a year, and this book was hands-down the best guide to the place I found. In fact, when I traveled around the country I left the other guides behind and took this one with me.Not only is the Rough Guide small enough to cart around conveniently, it has consistently accurate information.I also admire the attention the guide gives to areas outside of the big cities.Sweden is a country of small towns, really, and the guide pays a lot of attention to their attractions.Rough guides have never been afraid to be candid, either.I walked into a coffeehouse in Lund one day, took a look around, and felt instantly at home.I looked in the Rough Guide, and read that this was the place to be if you were a pretentious intellectual and wanted to be among similar effette poseurs.Yep, that was me, and that was the place.I had a great time.Tak sa miket, Rough Guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers the big and small cities.
I have always wanted to go to Sweden.I started learning Swedish when I was 14, and I started a pen-pal friendship with a Sweden at the same time. When I was 21 I finally made a trip to Sweden (March 2002) for 2 weeks and I used the May 2002 edition of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to a wonderful place.
Sweden is a wonderful travel destination. It is beautiful country thatmanages to be both very tranquil and very dynamic. However, like mostAmericans, I was totally ignorant about Sweden. In fact, I don't think Iwould ever have gone there if I hadn't found this book in the publiclibrary. It got me interested enough to spend a few weeks in Sweden, whichI thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely go back!Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Tourist Guide, but not completely reliable
I've been waffling over whether or not to review Frommer's Sweden (4th edition; April 2005), since I didn't actually go everywhere in Sweden that Frommer covered. But I feel compelled to point out some of the shortcomings I experienced in this book.First, while I understand that information is subject to rapid change, we should assume some of it remains stable: like the location of hotels. After exiting the tunnelbana, we followed Frommer's map to find our hotel.I became alarmed when we passed another hotel which, according to Frommer's map, should not have been anywhere near where it was.But it did prepare me to reach the x marking our spot to find out that our hotel was nowhere to be found.Fortunately I had the street address on our confirmation, because the hotel turned out to be in the opposite direction and less than a block away from our arrival point.Nor was this the book's only failing...and I might not have known that if we were not in Sweden visiting a native. The book's guide to customs on tipping was incorrect. The number they provide for emergencies in "Fast Facts: Sweden" (p. 51) (equivalent to 911 in the US) has been out of date since 1996.(Frommers does, oddly, give the correct number in some other sections.)The Stockholm Waterfestival they list for August has not been held since, as near as I can determine, the late 90s.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete Guide

4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable guide for an amazing Scandinavian city
Becky Ohlsen provides an excellent, personalized overview of Stockholm's many museums, cafes, hotels, etc. We relied on her book for our too-brief three-day stay in the city, and were consistently happy with the advice given. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Swede speaks out
Gunnar's (a typical Swede) review criticized this book for being narrow-minded, critical and clich about Swedes and for encouraging stereotypes about "bipolar herring-munchers who live deep inside the forest in little red houses without indoor plumbing."
5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the Sequel...
Jennifer Olsson's Fly Fishing the River of Second Chances is not so much a book about fly fishing as it is a travel memoir of the secrets of Sweden as seen through an American's eyes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reinforcing the stereotype
In case you didn't know: Swedes are bipolar herring-munchers who live deep inside the forest in little red houses without indoor plumbing. The Swedish men always prefer to live with their mom until she dies - sometimes longer... In some cases though, in their mid-forties when they hit a mid-life crisis, they go to Thailand to buy a bride and bring home to the mosquito infested village. Swedes rarely say anything at all, if they do it is something shallow about the weather or expressing the urge to get stupid-drunk on moonshine. Swedes also hunt or collect everything they eat i.e. moose and lingonberries. Swedes are indeed primitive, but really harmless and fun to watch. This is the portrait Jennifer Olsson paints of Sweden. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Great Explorer
The Swede Sven Hedin was the last great explorer we will see on this well-traveled planet. Hedin was born in 1865 and this autobiography describes his life up until 1908.Hedin's career was hardly finished, however, as he continued to traipse down the old Silk Road in Central Asia until the 1930s when he was 70 years old.
5-0 out of 5 stars A well written, great adventure book
(This refers to the National Geographic Reprint edition)5-0 out of 5 stars An Adventure Story Like No Other
This is a tale wonderfully told of an explorer's quest to fill in the blank spots on the map of Asia. Not only does Hedin present a clear and highly entertaining view of his travels, but he also gives us a portrait of his character. He shows us that he is a man with high goals and is undeterred in achieving those goals, even when all odds are against him.He shows us that he is also a very caring man, very much concerned about the welfare of his men and his animals. He also is a man that is awestruck by nature and is very concerned about not unduly intruding upon it or unnecessarily destroying it.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good information, but..........
the information gained by reading this book is very good, and should be useful for anyone living in or visiting Sweden for a long time. It will be somewhat useful for my proposed short trip this summer, particularly since my partner will be involved in academic issues and a conference during our trip. I suspect there is a better book to prepare for a short visit, but I haven't found it yet.5-0 out of 5 stars Swedish Culture Shock!

4-0 out of 5 stars Insight Guide is usu great, this one is almost great!
This book is great for a good overview of the entire country--the history, the people, the food, the main attractions. It explains about the different parts of the country. Some of the pictures are just sterotypical Sweden--Sweden is much more diverse then people realize. They have immigrants from many countries.Scandinavia is a beautiful place. The museum details are not up to date, but this is hard because they change often and can be closed for various reasons.Be sure to do research before you go there if you have specific places you want to see.Otherwise just head over and wander the streets and you will find great stuff. This is more of a book to read before you go rather then to carry around with you while you are there. The Iceland Insight Guide is great. As a side note: I lived in Stockholm, Sweden for one year working.I visited all of the Scandinavian countries and Finland while I was there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better.
Graeme Cornwallis almost immediately makes a misstep with his best and worst lists. The Top 10 is fine, but the Bottom 10? You can tell he was put up to this by the publisher.Arvika is shabby? I didn't find it that way at all!A lovely town with beautiful locations and a great arts and crafts store.Forests extremely tedious? Sorry. Ticket machines? I guess if you like ganging up on an overworked clerk, it's more fun not to have a ticket, but otherwise, it's very civilized. If these are the worst that he can find about Sweden, it must be a wonderful place! And that's how I found it.To be fair, Cornwallis is trying to fit a lot of information in a small book.He did miss an item or two (how could he not discuss allmansrtt, which basically says you can hike or camp anywhere that you're not being obnoxious?) but he certainly covers a lot of what is available. It would take more than one vacation to cover all the attractions he outlines just for Gothenburg. And his directions to eating places in Gothenburg are right on the mark.
