1-0 out of 5 stars expensive journal
A lot of money for a blank book in which to write. If I had seen this book in person before purchasing, I wouldn't have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
I was very disappointed with this book. The author did not include travel information that was very helpful. I thought there would be much more detail about the actual locations. Most of the entry was spent on which hotels are the nicest(and most expensive) at the location. I would not recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal
A conveniently sized travel journal (8" x 5.5" x .5") to write down first time impressions to accompany the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz". There are plenty of pages to write descriptions of travel adventures, plus every 8-10 pages there is one page of additional experiences you can experience, i.e. "Seven Tasty Reasons to Overindulge", "Eight Ways to Travel Abroad Without Leaving Home", etc. The back of the book has the 1,000 places checklist for easy reviewing. Also, a particularly helpful section follows the checklist including "Inernational Dialing Codces and Time Differences", "Conversions and Measures", "Helpful Web Sites", and "Useful Phrases". The front cover has a place for that precious picture CD of all the 1,000 places visited! A great companion journal to the book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz returned from years of traipsing through war zones as a foreign correspondent only to find that his childhood obsession with the Civil War had caught up with him. Near his house in Virginia, he happened to encounter people who reenact the CivilWar--men who dress up in period costumes and live as Johnny Rebs and Billy Yanks. Intrigued, he wound uphaving some odd adventures with the "hardcores," the fellows who try to immerse themselves in the war, hoping to get what they lovingly term a "period rush." Horwitz spent two years reporting on why Americans are still so obsessed with the war, and the ways in which it resonates today. In the course of his work, he made a sobering side trip to cover a murder that was provoked by the display of the Confederate flag, and he spoke to a number of people seeking to honor their ancestors who fought for the Confederacy. Horwitz has a flair for odd details that spark insights, and Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a colorful search for answers to an enigmatic childhood fascination with the Civil War, the most calamitous in our history. Visits to battlefields are described with an outline history matched with what the current visitor experiences. Reenactors are profiled (the author embeds himself in one group). Southern locals also provide their views about the War. The result is an engrossing, comparative record of distinct perspectives (and motives). Our current identity as a nation, defined by the prism of the Civil War, is nowhere better examined. History, given omission or embellishment, can become myth to some: to others, truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars So what's in *your* attic?
Tony Horwitz has created an enigma around a mystery, that mystery being our (that is, the US's) ongoing love affair with a horrific holocaust that just about gobbled us all up when it really did happen.Horwitz describes charmingly of his childhood, during which he obsessed, as many adolescents do, about the many batttles of the War Between The States, but he put aside those things--he thought--when he went to work as a war correspondent during the Gulf War.God, or fate, or what have you, had other plans, and he and his bride moved back to the states to literally find the Civil War, in the form of hardcore reenactors, in their backyard.
4-0 out of 5 stars interesting, unfortunately missed a very southern corner of the country
Horwitz does a fine job describing how the Civil War still resonates in the life of many southerners (black and white) to this day. The story of the murder of a young rebel flag bearer in south Kentucky is by far the most interesting chapter in the book. About the same age as the Kentuckian, and growing up in Missouri and Oklahoma, this chapter really hit close to home as I recalled some of the hatred I'd witnessed along racial lines. However, I was disappointed that Horwitz didn't spend at least a brief part of his two year journey visiting states like Missouri and seeing how the war still resonates in that region on the edge of the "old south."Horwitz doesn't mention Missouri one time in his book, which is a real shame considering the extreme importance the state played in the war and the very southern mentality that currently resides in many parts of the state. Missouri, a state painfully divided in 1861, is third behind Virginia and Tennessee in the number of battles fought on its soil during the conflict. Missouri was a slave state and offered up many young men to the lost cause.Like Kentucky, Missouri had a star of its own on the rebel battle flag and did pass an ordinance of sucession (now viewed as a "mock" sucession by most historians). From the southwest corner to "little dixie" near the center of the state Missouri has plenty of those flag flying rednecks Horwitz so wonderfully describes. Horwitz claims to be "putting away childish things" at the end of "confederates in the attic." It's my hope that if this great author ever takes another journey across the wonderful south he'll remember that forgotten region of the war's western theatre and delve into how that brutal war effects the citizens of today. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
This was our only reference guide to 6 weeks in Spain. We tried to use it for Hotels and buses and trains and all of the things a traveller would need to know. Instead of useful information, we were assaulted with so many adjectives and adverbs that bordered on stupidity, we almost threw the book away. It does contain some information of value if you can get passed all of the pompous verbiage. We did use the book for some things, but important information could be a great substitution for many adverbs and adjectives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nada
This volume is so thick and so heavy that when it arrived, I couldn't wait to dig and delve into it for my upcoming trip to Spain. Our accomodation and flight plans already made, I was most interested in details about the Northern provinces we'll be driving around. Lonely Planet Spain does not seem to contain any details that don't have to do with hotels/hostels, restaurants, or public transport, or other practical topics. We were more interested in soaking up the flavors, the ambience, and the culture of the country and its people, its customs and traditions, its arts and its music. Guess it's just as well, as this tome would probably throw our luggage over the airline's weight limits.
1-0 out of 5 stars YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS GUIDE
I've purchased and relied on several Lonely Planet Guides.Unlike the other guides, the Lonely Planet Guide to Spain was not useful or helpful.Although I travelled to Spain in 2005, the 2005 edition's information concerning prices for lodgings, food, transportation and attractions was already out of date. One wonders when it was last updated. Moreover, the book is bulky and poorly organized, making it difficult to pinpoint information. Finally, information concerning secondary cities and towns is impressionistic at best. The Lonely Planet Guide to Spain was a disappointment, poor value and--most importantly--a poor guide to Spain. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet - Ireland
Outstanding!Just returned from our trip to Ireland, and found everything to be wonderful. For the areas we visited (Dublin and County Waterford), we went everywhere that was recommended, and were not disappointed.Loved the organization and presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
Lonely Planet's "Ireland" is the most thorough travel guidebook I've found. It covers more subjects and lists more places than any other single guidebook. The descriptions are current, interesting and relevant. The maps are very useful and specific directions are given to get to the various sights listed. Also the Irish as well as the English form of place names is given - helpful when trying to interpret road signs.Various forms of transportation available in each place is also a bonus. This guidebook lists more lodging and eating options than any other. Whether you are into wind surfing or shopping, hiking or bar hopping, this book has a wealth of information for you. If you are only going to get one guidebook for your trip - this is the one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers every little nook and cranny
My mom and I decided to spend a month driving all over Ireland. We took this book and the "Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guides)" book. Both were very helpful.I'm drawn in more by pictures which is rather limited in this book but I promise in the 4 weeks we drove down all sorts of bad roads and lanes, never once did we come across a landmark, area or town that wasn't mentioned in this book!It was amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Culinary Traveller in Tuscany - Food for Thought
5-0 out of 5 stars Delectable!
This book is what so many books claim to be but aren't -- an off-the-beaten-track gem.For any visitor to Tuscany with the time or inclination to go beyond the usual Florence-Lucca-Pisa-San Gimignano-Siena type of itinerary (to name just one), the book offers a wonderfully imaginative alternative: plan your days -- or the entire trip -- around the best restaurants to be found in the little towns that most tourists never visit. The author gives tantalizing descriptions of both the towns and restaurants (with maps and itineraries), and supplies plenty of recipes to boot.So the book will function in the kitchen just as well as on the road -- it is essentially half cookbook and half guidebook. But for me (not being much of a cook, and planning a trip to Italy) it was the places the author describes that were the most delectable of all.The book is a great idea, beautifully executed and beautifully written.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like great advice from a friend
Beth Elon's descriptions and recommendations are spot-on.I got this book just in time for a trip to Tuscany and found it extraordinarily useful. We loved visiting the places she mentioned and found her recipes and description of local specialties a great help in making fantastic menu selections.Back home, the recipes are like having Tuscany in our kitchen. It's now my favorite book to give to food- and travel-loving friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Virtually essential
Virtually essential when travelling to Japan for business (or visiting relatives) and extremely helpful for the casual tourist. In spite of its brevity, it covers nearly all of the essentials and provides a weath of historical and cultural background for many of the customs. Even though this is the only one I have read so far, I would imagine that other books by De Mente are well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can never go wrong with Rick
Rick is the best ... I gave this book to my parents after I had used his Paris book. He'll never steer you wrong, and he has the best self-guided tours of anyone. I used to use the "eyewitness" books, which are pretty to look at, but there is nothing like Rick's. The last time I was in Paris, I ran into a couple of people who were using his book, and we struck up a great conversation, and at the end we all agreed that Rick's books are the best way to go. It'll be money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great book to start you out if you've never been to Europe. It starts out with general information on how to prepare for the trip and what to expect.I recommend reading this first, then getting another Rick Steves book that specifies your destination country (this book gives general info about the different countries but his other books are full of details on one specific destinations).
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Eastern Europe 2006

5-0 out of 5 stars Lansky knows what he's talking about
I recently attended a presentation by Doug Lansky, and was bowled over by his experiences and his extensive travel. (He's been to and had experience in and covered in reporting over a hundred countries!) He really has been in all the situations he advises on. Therefore, this guide is an accurate and realistic source for anyone traveling-- a must have! Lansky's tales are amazing! And his advice even better!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Journey
The reader will travel with the author throughout the Middle East, following the steps of the patriarchs through the beginnings of the conquest by Joshua, in source of a connection with history and ultimately a divine spark. This author is very easy to read and provides colorful descriptions of his surroundings that allow the reader to be there. Throughout the book is an undercurrent of "Why can't we just all get along!"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to the Lands of the Bible for People of all Faiths
I've been a fan of Bruce Feiler's writing after watching him on C-Span's Book TV talk about his first book about Abraham. This must have been about four or five years ago now. I went out to purchase ABRAHAM and discovered a treasure. Feiler brings many gifts and talents to writing, particularly religious writing. First of all he writes about issues regarding faith from the point of view of one who practices his faith. Like many of his readers, his journey to faith has not been a straight path which seems to give him a good perspective on the questions people are asking. He also has a fluid writing style and is able to weave personal memoir, always interesting and at times moving stories, geography, history, and theology together to create a great read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds despite itself...
Walking the Bible is not among the better travel writing I've read primarily because it focuses more on the author than the locations he visited.Feiler did get around:from Turkey to Egypt, from the Negev to the Sinai, from Jerusalem to Jordan, but he minimizes the narrative elements one typically associates with good travel writing for a seemingly endless array of personal epiphanies. Despite it's subtitle, Walking the Bible is more a journey by catharsis through Bruce Feiler's mind than a journey by land through the five books of Moses. Thus, beyond his ubiquitous food metaphors, a descriptive presence is often found wanting.

I went from being wowed to feeling blah about this book...it was like a rollercoaster...up and down. Some of the pictures...gorgeous...took my breath away and others left me quickly flipping through to the next page hoping to see something that captured my attention.
2-0 out of 5 stars Why is the cost so reasonable?...
...essentially you get what you pay for. This book is certanly NOT representative of what I have come to expect from National Geographic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Execution
National Geographic Magazine is famous for their excellent photography; it is the very reason I picked up this volume. However, Wide Angle: National Geographic Greatest Places failed to live up to my expectations. I was underwhelmed not only by a large portion of the images, but mostly by the poorly executed concept. In a title that clearly implies these are the greatest places featured, I felt the chosen photographs illustrated some lackluster locales. Furthermore, the organization was too loose. The book could have benefited from better formating not only of its categories, but of the photos themselves, which are often stretched in an unflattering matter. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Bad Maps
This guide does not come close to comparing with Lonely Planet. It is poorly written and gives little or no information about museums and city sites other than their address and hours of operation. The map is also poorly done and it is difficult to use in locating restaurants and museums.Buenos Aires is an amazing city so I suggest buying a worthy guide book, not this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough guide if just visiting Buenos Aires
If you're just visiting Buenos Aires and not elsewhere in Argentina, this guide is great. The information is fairly up to date. However the publication date is a bit misleading. Timeout republished the 2d edition, with this ISBN in 2005, but it is the same information from Timeout's mid-2004 publication. Timeout just used a different publisher, thus a different ISBN number and misleading new publication date.I still recommend this book, just be aware that some information has changed since 2004.Also, if you could find a good used copy under ISBN 014101363X for less money, you will be getting the same information.Fortunately it will be a lot of information and still will be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best B.A. guidebook around!

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Most-Used Source
This book is worth the price and the last-minute shipping that we needed to get it to us before our flight to France. We referred to it constantly. We used it to select which drives to take on a given day, and it is of great value here.Readers may disagree with some of the star-ratings on certain sites (and sights), but this is to be expected and one should calibrate oneself against the views of the author. For example, we would rate Aix-en-Provence lower, Nimes lower, and the upper Vaucluse in general higher.Once you see where your tastes lie (Roman ruins more interesting than Vacqueyras tasting?) then you will know how to use the book to its best advantage.Highly recommended. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but limited and too patronizing
There is no denying it, this book has lots of useful tips and is easy to use but I did find the tone a bit patronizing at times. I really don't need someone to tell me what to think, even when in a foreign country. I also did not like the "show this book for x% discount" offers - I rather pay full price elsewhere and know the place is in the guidebook on its own merits.
2-0 out of 5 stars Trite and conventional
Was very disappointed with this book. Not only did it cover only the most touristy places, but it left out many more interesting, not as common, sites. The real tip off is that he lists places that "guarantee the price listed here if you show them your copy of this book" or offer a "10% discount" with this book. That isn't really objective reporting in my opinion.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit too opinionated for me!
I haven't see the TV show, but a friend loves the series and strongly recommended the book. Before our family trip for 10 days throughout Germany, I purchased a few different travel guides. After having each of them in hand before leaving home, we took 3 books with us.By the 3rd day, we only carried 2 books with us: Daytrips Germany, 6th Edition and then as a BACKUP, Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2006.It was okay, but a bit too snarky for me.Using the 2 books together were great for finding tourist sites, great restaurants and hotels that could accommodate 2 adults and 2 kids (most hotels don't have rooms with 2 beds!). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars American Casino Guide -- Yes
It's a win win book.Use just a coupon or two and you've paid for the book. There is much good information in there too. Can't afford not to have one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Las Vegas bound
If you are going to Las Vegas, you get your money back and then some with the coupons in the back of the book.It helps if you are renting a car or driving, as many of the 2 for 1 offers are outside of the strip area. I have used this book for 3 years and told others about it - everyone likes it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I wasn't too into this one. I'm a big fan of Steinbeck's fiction, but this memoir is rather dull. I was looking to hear what he had to say about the zeitgeist of America at the time he wrote it. But as an older man (as he even admits) he isn't as inspired to talk to or rub shoulders with people whom he crosses paths. The ones that he does writeabout come across as a bit uninspired. Nothing much happens on his journey and it almost seems like he doesn't have too much to say.
5-0 out of 5 stars Travels With Charlie, by John Steinbeck
Favorite memories of this book come from years ago when I could not put the book down as I read of Steinbecks travels with his poodle. For those whose minds wander and wonder about the roads, towns and people of the U.S., I highly recommend this book.I am purchasing it to read again.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great travel book, for awhile....
Great travel book. Imagery was good and the descriptions were more than adequate. I more than once thought I was right there and that's a good thing. However it sort of lost steam at the end and I truly believe Steinbeck got homesick during the travels, and tired of writing near the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars get this book if you plan to spend more than 2 days in Mumbai
I've been living in Mumbai for about three weeks now (on a 6 month stay) and I began reading this book once I arrived in India.I just finished a coupleof nights ago. Thanks to this book, I can read the local section of my daily newspaper from politics to crime to Bollywood, and the intersection of all three, and actually understand a bit more about what is going on (sadly, justice is so slow here that the people being tried for the 1993 bombings are only just now being sentenced).I can see a slum or pavement dwellers and have a better sense of the stories of the people.I can comiserate with everyone else stuck in traffic, and soon, once the monsoon ends, with everyone else breathing the dirty air.
5-0 out of 5 stars couldn't put this one down
Read it in a single stretch on a transatlantic flight, and did not once lose interest. A must read for every Bombayite and highly recommended for everyone else. Fearlessly investigated and meticulously researched, while at the same time capturing the heart and soul of the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're on a Hindustani tip...
...the Suketu Mehta's MAXIMUM CITY -- a book about Bombay and its colourful characters -- is definitely for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
All rough guides that I have encountered are chock full of great information. The Egypt guide in particular is one of the best. The number of maps is fantastic and the quality of the information is comparable to what you usually have to visit the site to obtain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves money big time
I went to Egypt in February 2006 with my wife and our two boys (5 and 2.5 years).Although we took a package tour to Hurghada, we actually overnighted there only three nights of the eleven we were in Egypt. The rest we spent moving around (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, busses, train, cruise ship, jeep). For the whole trip we spent around 1000 USD plus the package. We could have easily spent twice as much (or, more precisely -- seen twice as little because the budget was limited) if not the hints in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great So Far
I arrived in Egypt this week and have been using this guide to help me get aquainted with it.I don't have any other guides to compare it to, but I can say that the organization, writing, maps, extras, and overall quality of the book seem to be excellent. It has been very helpful so far.
