"Do's and Taboos Around the World for Women in Business" is a highly interesting book, and one that is likely to prove useful for women who need to travel abroad for business reasons. Moreover, it is quite engaging, due to the fact that the authors combine practical advice with funny anecdotes about women working in international business.
Do's and Taboo's
I thought that this book while touching on many areas of do's and taboos was very basic in it's approach...perhaps even juvenile or youngsterish...While I was looking for actual do's and don't this book often offered situational issues...rarely stating DON"TS and offering multiple choices instead of stating the real Do's in many cases. Good for young adults and young persons going into new countries. Older people probably want a guide that states the facts like: In this country..cover your head in public at all times..instead of choice 1-go buy a head scarf.....2 tear a part off your dress and make one ...3 go scarfless...4 scream loudly I'm an American and don't need it.

From the paperback edition's cover you would expect this to be an amusing look at other people's travel horrors.The stories are OK, but I have seen better collections of such.The book is leavened by a rather outdated setof observations on the state of the book industry.I'm surprised that a1998 book gives almost no attention to internet book retailing. ... Great guide for novice warriors.

Great ideas and tips for all travelers!
I just got back from holiday in Ireland. On the return flight, I experienced the excruciating pain that is a head cold, mixed with the pressure adjustment on the plane. I had no idea what to do, having never felt that way before! When I got home, a friend handed me this book, and almost immediately in flipping through it I landed to the pages on how to battle a head cold, leading up to - and during a flight. If only I'd had this book before my trip! An added bonus to this book is that it comes with tips and checklists. I feel better prepared for my next trip and wonder how I travelled without it!

Terrific source
I am purchasing an additional 3 copies for my staff.I found this book to be very helpful and certainly provided a lot of practical information.Especially useful was the section on medical emergencies overseas.Our company's health plan does cover medical needs abroad but many of our employees declined in-house coverage because their spouses had covered them with other policies.Many of those folks were not covered when they traveled.Also, we got into the habit of registering with the local embassies when we traveled to problematic regions.This was something we never considered before but was helpful.The embassy staff gave us good recommendations as far as security was concerned and even provided some additional information as to good places to eat, visit and shop. I am buying several more copies for my staff.I found this information to be enormously useful.In particular, the information on overseas planning for medical emergencies was great.Also, the suggestion that we check in with the local embassy upon arrival overseas was something I had never done before.The embassy staff was great and not only gave us some valuable information but also gave us additional advice on places to stay and visit ect. Do the due diligence!
Ex-pats going to Europe, have no fear, this book has been written for you. With globalization now in full force, more and more international business opportunities are becoming available. But beware, the way business is done abroad is very different than in the US. Don't make the common mistakes Americans make in Europe; ie. be formal, use Mr.(last name) instead of just "Bill". Do your homework. Even American giants such as Jack Welch of GE and the Chrysler Corporation have had trouble because they did not prepare. The Road Warrior Guru
I read Rob's book cover to cover on a flight from the east coast to the west. There are more pages "dogearred" than I have ever folded before. Rob understands, speaks from the heart and has a genuine, sincere interest in helping people improve their lives. One idea I implemented immediately. I blocked out all three of our children's birthdays on the calendar as non-travel days. This book is a keeper and must-have for anyone who practically lives on the road!

Highly recommended for everyone who travels, and everyone who doesn't
This is an extraordinarily personal book.Within the first dozen pages, Author Rob Jolles has shared moments of extreme personal embarrassment with us, gently encouraging us to laugh with him rather than at him.And later on, he shares very personal issues like losing confidence in himself, and going through emotional slumps, as well as showing times when he behaved less than perfectly to other people.
Life Changing Book!!!A Must Read!!!
I've been a road warrior for many years.I work for a sports agency and I spend many nights and weeks away from my family.I have risen very high in my profession and I think I could go higher.I had also forgotten what was important.Robert Jolles helped remind me.The book starts a funny, witty series of tales about lessons learned on the road.It was wonderful up to this point and I was already happy I read it.Then I reached the part about overcoming the addiction to travel.I realized that this book was speaking to people like me.I have since started traveling less and spending more time with my family.Robert Jolles has truly changed my life and I can't thank him enough for writing this.I recommend this to anybody, anywhere who travels.There are so many wonderful lessons in this book.A must read for all of us road warriors!!! ... You need this book
Guerilla Travel Tactics is an amazing book!It is chock full of wonderful tips which are seldom -- if ever -- found in other travel advice books.It is easy to read, clear, and well-organized.And it is very, very useful.The tips in this book can do much to make your trips less expensive, more comfortable and more fun.This book is a thousand times better than other other travel advice book.I have read this book from cover to cover at least 3 or 4 times.If you travel, you need this book.In any case, it's fun to read.A lot of fun, you'll see.

This Book Aspires To Be The Bible For Cost Conscious Travel
If there is one lesson I have discovered over my umpteen years of travelling is that you need to be very creative when coordinating your jaunts in order to glean the most advantageous deals.
The first truly valuable book for all travellers
As someone who has been travelling for business for the last 15 years (cost constraints but a low level of tolerance for poor quality or service) and someone who has been travelling more often for fun (5 star taste but on a 2 or 3 star budget), I have found that most "travel tips" books are either too'dumbed down" with obvious tips that make little difference, or are so arcane with regard to specific locales that they are not realistic for me, as to be useless.This is the first book that is comprised entirely of real and useful information for travellers of all types and budgets.Kudos to Theo Brandt-Sarif who did the research and to the publisher that ventured to bring yet another travel book onto the scene.I have used the information in this book on my last few trips and it has really made a difference.Skeptical friends of mine who borrowed this book and used it have since purchased it and recommend it to their friends. ... Good information
My wife and I read this book and wish we had found it before our two trips to Russia.The book is a quick (75 pages) and easy read; full of useful information without any fluff. The book puts an awkward foot forward
Although this book discusses many important aspects of Russian culture, I felt that it focused a bit too much on bussines. Many of us, like myself, would be visiting Russia not for bussines, rather as tourists. However,some of her remarks did offer some excelent advice about greeting people,eating, and Russian manners. Most topics though seemed a bit too glazedover. I wished that the author would have further discussed many points inher book. Overall, it's a good book to start with. Read it and you willfind a taste of what Russian manners are like. Although I would stronglyrecomend doing further research. A very insightful book
I have read many books like this and I really like it.The author has captured my interest and indeed keeping your family close is o so important for most of us parents.
Good Insight - From a Strongly Christian Perspective
I bought this book for my husband, when he took a new job requiring lots of travel.While there is lots of good insight to be had, the book has a strong fundamental Christian bias that was not mentioned on Amazon.My husband is turned off by all things religious, so was taken aback at what he felt was a hidden spiritual agenda behind it.We were disappointed that someone hasn't written a book on this important topic without the religious bias.

Japan: No physical contact in greeting. For an informal greeting use a short nod.Now matter how many times you meet a person in a day make sure to bow.Topics to avoid: your profession, economics, comparision between countries, and prices.Japanese believe they are following the right way. Japanese people will want to practice their English in conversations, but if you have trouble communicating write down your question.Japanese are very pleased, if visitors are aware of the culture and customs.If you visit a Budhist temple make sure to take off your shoes, don't walk infront of the priests, don't sit on religious statutes, remove hats at shrines, never step on a tatami mat, and be careful not to touch a Japanese back or head.To say no, wave your hand back and forward infront of your nose.To attract someone's attention, hold your palm down and move it up and down.In Japan it is consider rude to approach a person aggressively while shopping and never attempt to bargin in a shop.Japanese consider it rude to count change in front of them. For business wear a suite and tie and conservative colors and many restaurants require a jacket.Never fold the right side of the Kimono over the left, never leave stabbed chopsticks into the food, instead, place the chopsticks at the top of the bowl when finished.Tipping is virtually unknown in Japan.At a persons home plan on spending the visit in a special room for visitors.When visiting a home with a garden don't use it for sunbathing or recreation.Bring small gifts, Japanese are embarrassed by big and expensive gifts. Fantastic all-in-one guide to Asian customs
I purchased an earlier edition of this book back in the late eighties, and since then have referred to it time and time again prior to traveling to an Asian country for the first time. The book covers almost all Asian countries from Japan to India, and for the most part has been right on the money in its descriptions of the countries where I have worked or visited (Korea, Thailand, Phillipines, China, Australia). A chapter is devoted to each country with sections covering public/private behavior, meals, table manners, general business practices, etc. There are lists of dos and don'ts for the reader to follow, and advice on hotels, restaurants, tipping, transportation, and dress as well. It makes for interesting reading on different cultures even if one does not intend to travel to Asia anytime in the near future. Although whole books could easily be written on this topic for each country, this one covers the most important items in a well-organized manner. ... Read more

For the seasoned or beginner business traveler
An easy read that's the complete, one-stop reference for any business traveler. It has a strong emphasis on international travel, and great information on frequent flyer programs.I'm a seasoned traveller but still found the e-Book version of this book to be very helpful, particularly the information on how to score an an airline upgrade.

Hit the Ground Running - Duh!
There was hardly anything in this book that anyone with half a brain couldn't figure out after one or at the most, two, business trips - or even a vacation trip by air.I had been hoping forsome real insight and there was very little.
