4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
When I got this book I was pleased about most of the places it listed. However, the author left a lot out (though I know you can't please everybody) and put in too many expensive hotels. If we're supposed to do all 1000 things before we die, how are we expected to afford all of it if we're staying in all the expensive hotels? *sigh* oh well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Stop reading & travel
I bought this book as a challenge for myself to highlight all the places I've been, considering myself well traveled. But I had no idea and now, I have clear goals of where I want to go and why.I also thought it was funny, that there are no places in Korea listed.I'm unhappily stationed in South Korea and couldn't agree more that there are no places that anyone HAS to see before they die here.I will however make it a point to travel to the steakhouse in OK.The only thing that would make this book better, would be more pics and some of them in color.HAPPY TRAVELS!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst travel book........possible
This has got to be one of the worst travel books I have ever come across. It does not cover anything that would not already be obvious if you went to one of the places listed here - like not to miss the Empire State Bldg if you are in NYC or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On the Swedish section it has the area referred to as all of Southern Sweden mixed up with an island of its east coast. Anyone looking for experiencing something special on their trips should stay far away from this book. I only give it one star because the system does not allow me to put none. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly What It Claims to Be
Cheaply published, on flimsy newsprint, this book does exactly what it purports to do--guide the driver to the services needed by the motoring public traveling our interstates. For RVers, especially, knowing which exit has a gas station that is accessible to our 55 foot+ rigs, is critical information, saving time and frazzled nerves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those offramps looking
Absolutely perfect for those off ramp excursions. My only gripe with this book is that is does not have the Parkways in NY and NJ (maybe other places too). I love that it has Wal-Mart for the different exits. A must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool to use
This guide takes a short time to figure out how to use it, but well worth it.We used the book on a 3-family trip from Illinois to South Carolina's southern coast. We found ourselves constantly looking up where rest areas were to be found, and just what was available at the exits we were approaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, general survival text
This book does a great job of covering a variety of survival topics and techniques without seeming disorganized. Sections are divided well, and wording is direct and uncomplicated. This is a good book for serious outdoorsmen in addition to those just looking to brush up their knowledge "just in case".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info and a fun read
My 7 year old son loves the idea of being a survival expert. Most of his "survival" involves spending the afternoon in the year eating sandwiches in his tent.I purchased the "SAS Survival Handbook" as a something fun to read with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful, easy reading, thought provoking resource on cultural norms
This book is an excellent resource for people who are ready and want to learn more about U.S. American cultural norms. This includes people from other countries and people living in the United States (regardless of citizenship). For U.S. Americans, by highlighting U.S. American culture the book also provides insight into other cultures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated
I don't know why this book has a bad rap here, as I found it easy to read and entertaining as an American wanting to know about unique qualities of my own culture. The author examines a number of aspects of American culture and compares them to other cultures, I couldn't have asked for anything better.Perhaps there are better books on the subject, but this is the first I've read and it was sufficient for my purpose, although I will look into more after this one.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Gary Althen's richly detailed guide shines a psychological, cultural and sociological spotlight on American customs, values, attitudes and behavior. Organized into 22 chapters that cover just about every aspect of American life, the book hits you with its uncanny insight, accuracy and honesty. Although he doesn't completely avoid stereotyping (and doesn't seem at all bothered by it), Althen presents the good, the bad and the quirky. He explains the "why" behind American attitudes and manners. Even though this is a guide for foreigners visiting, doing business in or living in the United States, we from getAbstract also suggest this book to Americans. It's an eye-opener about the national personality, or the perceived national personality, from navete to individualism. As Scotsman Robert Burns wrote, "Oh wad some power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as others see us." Well, here's your chance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice comprehensive travel aid
This is a reasonably comprehensive travel guide to Turkey. All regions of the country are well covered, with lots of good information on local sites and amenities. It is small enough for travel and is up-to-date. It also includes good basic maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly Illustrated
DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are perfect for your next vacation or they can be illustrated journeys into new worlds you wish you could visit. These guides help me to understand the world and the 1,200 photographs, illustrations and maps in the Eyewitness Turkey Guide are stunning in beauty. I loved the two page spread of the Library of Celsus (one of the most famous Roman sites in Turkey) that is still standing after an earthquake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious photo feast for your eyes, makes you want to go!
I'm a fan of DK publications in general, and their style is well suited for these 'big picture' Eyewitness travel guides. The maps, photos, illustrations and contexts excel at giving you the bird's eye view of what is outstanding in Turkey.

4-0 out of 5 stars The World's Most Dangerous Book
It took about five months, but I read all thousand pages of The World's Most Dangerous Places, known to its fans as DP. The book is a breezily written cyclopedia of what can go wrong and where as you travel the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I recently finished reading the 5th Edition of DP, and was amazed.Pelton's travel tips offer a wealth of uncommon "common sense" and his tongue-in-cheek humour, rather than make light of the difficulties and suffering experienced by people in warzones, adds a strange touch of realism and illustrates the true absurdity of some situations.A must read for anybody traveling outside of the first world, or any of those folks who are afraid to leave the house in Canada or the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Driven
If you're going to Boston and don't know you're way around, you will need this book. You will need to sit down and really look at it, and then keep it with you.If you get lost, don't try and use logic or common sense to unravel your path.Just pull over and get your map out, and make a plan before you try and inch your way back into traffic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I purchased this book for my son who is moving to Salem, Mass., from Michigan in August 2006. He took it with him when he went apartment hunting and said it was "a great help." He also used it to explore Boston. He found it to be very detailed. He liked the fact that it is spiral bound, staying open easily on the needed page. For myself, I found the print just a tad too small, but being 52, my eyesight is not what it was... My son did not find this a problem. In fact, he felt that with bigger print, the book would be increased in size unfavorably. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus
The zydler guide was ok in its time. But the new Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is very, very much better than the Zydler. ALL PAGES IN COLOR, beautyful photos and nearly 200 precise charts. Dont dream of cruising panama without it.

2-0 out of 5 stars New Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is way better
We just finished (July 2006) cruising the Pacific side of Panama and through the canal and found the Zydler guide to not be as useful as the newer Bauhaus guide. The major difference is in the charts & chartlets - the Bauhaus guide is all color charts that look like real charts - the Zydler guide is all B&W hand drawn sketches that are extremely hard to read - virtually useless. The Zydler guide has more words but less useful information as it's quite a bit older and some information isway out of date - eg. the Western Panama Islands like Coiba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great RV Companion Book
RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY by Peggi and John McDonald is an excellent publication and a MUST for ALL RVers - from those new to the RV lifestyle to seasoned RVers. The book is organized by chapters which guide you through buying an RV or camper to where to stay, how to pack, what to purchase for multiple uses, how to add storage and organize, and many many more tips. The authors are well qualified for writing this and their other books listed below. They have spent years living in their RV six months in Canada and six months in the United States each year. They are also authors of 'SPIRIT OF THE OPEN ROAD and RV PACKING TIPS and RV LIFE LESSONS and EASY LIVING HINGS and RV TRAVEL TO CANADA E-BOOK.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, conversational guide
For anyone considering or experiencing the RV lifestyle, this book is a wide-ranging tour of things you need to know. Peggi McDonald, a Canadian with extensive (20 years on the road) RV knowledge; been there, done that. She shares the kind of information and advice that enable people to build their competence and confidence as pat-time or full-time RVers.
5-0 out of 5 stars RV Living in the 21st Century
I enjoyed reading this RV book. I found it to be easy reading and presented in an easy to digest format. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many, that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! I have been RVing for years and even learned things I hadn't come across before. I am really impressed that another woman RVer knows so much about the systems of an RV and among other things knows how to actually dump the holding tanks. After reading this book you will also know how! One of the most important and overlooked subjects about your RV are the weight issues involved. Peggi gives information about where and how to weigh your RV and terminology involved this includes motorized and towables. For new RVers especially, reading this book will put you light years ahead of the game! Good job Peggi Mcdonald! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book if you are thinking of purchasing or just curious about time shares
I thought some of reviews were harsh and unfair. This book is the best one on the market I could find on this somewhat confusing topic. In addition, the information on buying a time share from an individual (rather than the developer), or on e-bay is probably where the bargains are found. The author points out the wisdom and the pitfalls in trying to do this. The book has a web site from which the author answered some additonal questions that I wrote in to her.Timeshares are a close call from a financial standpoint in my own opinion, however time share units are typically better than a hotel, e.g. kitchen and other amenities.
2-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
When I discovered that this book was written by the same person who wrote "Surviving a Timeshare Presentation", I really knew I had been taken. This should be "Surviving a Book Sale", because both books are weak with substance and are written by someone who probably couldn't give it away as a sales person. Why do non-producers become Authors? One of the books had a sticker on the front that said "Personally autographed" and on the inside cover, she had scribbled "Lisa".Give me a break. If you want to learn about Timeshare, take a presentation with a reputable company and ask lots of questions. They will answer them for you and they will even do the math correctly when they show you the purchase options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good primer for beginners
I found the book fairly informative and basic for those of us completely new to timeshare. I have to think some of the reviewers here never read this book, because the author indeed goes out of her way to reference informative webpages (including tug2.net mentioned here and others) for further information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is the best book on travel related advice i have ever read, and its surprisingly interesting compared to most guides you would read. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book on long-term travel
A terrific read - either for the armchair traveler or those (like me) who are seriously contemplating a long-term travel adventure. Rolf breaks down all the BS excuses that we make for ourselves not to travel, and hold out the lure of learning and self-discovery. Highly recommended. The only reason the book didn't get 5 stars is that it's too short - not a huge problem - and the various quotes from other travel writers are distracting and not always helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
I think this series of guides is very good. I've just come back from Morocco and found this to be the better of the books to be carrying (others I met had Footprint, Rough Guide or Lonely Planet). It is as good as an inspiration to go as it is as a reference inside that mosque, market or on that mountain. It must not be confused with the 'comprehensive' reviewed/listing/directory book of the Lonely Planet genre (for people who call themselves adventurers yet cannot go to a hotel that has not been 'bigged up' in their 'bible' - well at least they're all guaranteed to end up in the same shed based on one person's opinion!). There's rarely a book with as many photos and full color diagramatical explanations - call me illiterate but sometimes I just want to see a photo of something and say 'I want to go and look at that'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Companion...
For those of you interested in the praticality of this as a travel companion, trust me, it works. The maps are not enough alone to find buildings in their respective cities but between knowing their general locations and addresses you can easily navigate your way to find them.I carried this book in my pocket around Europe and can say first hand that it was the best travel guide I had.A must for any Architect or student planning on traveling.

I think this is a book EVERY architect student should posses as a reference. It contains a large selection of references from all over the world. Editorial Review

Since 1970 South Africa ended apartheid; Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president of Haiti, deposed by military coup then reinstated; San Francisco suffered a major earthquake; and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved. So it's a good thing Merriam-Webster updated its geographical dictionary to include more than 48,000 alphabetically arranged entries of mountains, lakes, towns, and countries. The third edition had a lot of catching up to do, what with the social, political, financial, and physical upheavals that have taken place since the second edition was published, and the result is a modern and sophisticated reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary
The dictionary was delivered as promised and in excellent condition.I consider Amazon to be a great site and I will order from them again in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comparison between 1988 and 2001 Editions
I had been using the 1988 edition without the need to update my library with the Second Edition until last year. Owing to geopolitical changes since 1988, a more recent edition of Webster's New Geographical Dictionary seemed necessary and the Third Edition was the current version available. The Third Edition contains more current background information (e.g. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), expanded entries (e.g. Palghat), a subtle, easier-to-read font, sidebars, and cleaner maps (e.g. Palestine). That said, if you want more detailed maps or more concise country profiles, you might be better off checking other resource materials such as National Geographic (Magazine maps) and The CIA World Fact Book respectively. Where this boook retains its advantage is that it contains diacritical notation for the proper pronunciation of the place names.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding
This is an excellent reference book that covers a myriad of geographical locations. The maps are also excellent.I highly recommend this book.A previous reviewer claims that the editors made an egregious mistake by including Slovenia as part of the Balkan states.Maybe that person should do a little research because virtually every resource, including Microsoft Encarta, includes Slovenia in the Balkans. And yes, the Ottomans did conquer Slovenia. The Ottomans had to surrender Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia to the Hapsburgs in 1699.The editors of this book got it right on the money. As for that reviewer -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars No substance
It was like reading a Disney brochure- no real info. There were tidbits about each park, but nothing that would help us out. The Unofficial Guide to Disney World was much, much, much better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
If you are going to Walt Disney World Resort for the first time and want to keep some mystery until you actually ride the attractions, then this book may not be for you. Some of the descriptions for the various attractions go step-by-step through them, including plot points in 3D movies and so on. The book also leaves a lot out in other areas, such as dining (little coverage), getting around Walt Disney World, and off-site hotels and dining.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Primer On Disney World
My husband, son, and I just got back from Disney World a few weeks ago. We planned the trip in just a month's time, and WDW guides were very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source
My wife is considering hiking the trail and gave this book high marks.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD REFERENCE
You have to admit, this IS a good general reference book for the virgin AT hiker, because of its size; good info compacted and goes well with other sources, but you won't find a seasoned through-hiker carrying one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Literature
I personally have bought every book possible concerning the Appalachian Trail while planning my thru-hike.However, if you are concerned about money, or wasting time reading for that matter, I would advise not to buy any of Jan Curran's books.I have read all three of his on the AT and have found them very boring, to the point of difficult to finish.Other books out there are much worthwhile.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Toujours Provence
I enjoyed Mayle's first book A Year in Provence a lot better than this book. If you want to learn about French food and meals then this book will help you. But it is not as funny as his first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic gourmet tour of Provence
Pete Mayle does it again. Experience Provence through the poetic, visual style of the expert.Who needs to travel when you have Peter at hand?

3-0 out of 5 stars Pas mal, mais....
I knew we were in trouble when Mayle's sequel to his delightful "Year in Provence" opened with vignettes on constipation and suppositories. Oh, Mayle's fresh and breezy style is here, and he still has an eye for small but telling details, but this is mainly a retread of the same ground he worked in the much more cohesive "Year in Provence." We are told, yet again, about annoying guests, fraud in the truffle trade, and the arrogance of outsiders who are invading Provence and turning it into a playground for the rich, which is rich coming from a man who has plenty of money to finance his enviable lifestyle and quests to discover the origins of pastis!

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful
This product is convenient to carry and contains pertinent information for the short-time visitor to Germany or Austria.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
This has got to be the best-designed foreign language phrase book/dictionery ever written. Very well organized; shirt-pocket sized; all words spelled phonetically (in addition to their real spelling); an emphasis on real conversational phrases and practical situations that a traveler would actually encounter. I had to laugh out loud when I got to the section that dealt with romance... and also how to DISCOURAGE romantic advances (such as the translation of "I have many diseases"). If you are going to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, take this along. People may argue about the utility of Mr. Steves' guidebooks, but his phrase book and dictionery is an undeniable winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor, too.
This is the greatest phrase book I have ever used.It is funny and list phrases people use in real conversation.I honestly didn't have to use mine much because I found most Germans and Swiss eager to practice their English. However, it was a great tool.It is also small in size, which is important if you are trying to travel light! ...
