3-0 out of 5 stars RV Trip Review
I really enjoyed the second half of the book more, when the trip actually got started. However, for non-experienced RVers the first part of the book would be very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Useful Book; All that it Lives Up To
I'm in the early stages of planning a major road trip, and Phil and Carol's book is exactly what I was looking for to help my husband and I cover our bases and ensure a smooth transition to life on the road for a while.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
We bought an early edition of this book, and have found it wanting. Yes, there were some good shopping recommendations. But the ratings for restaurants and many other points of interest are just not that good.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible for every trip to NYC
The 'List by Item' at the front of the store and restaurant chapters is invaluable. The boxed tidbits make this guide book easier and more enjoyable to read. With the changing of NYC the author's suggestion of calling a business before a visit sure makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars gerry frank's new york
fantastic book for anyone visiting or living in NYC. the only drawbacks are (1) the absence of any subway map and (2) use of the index to refer back to specific items in the book itself i,e, it's all in there, you just have to work to find it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life
Like anyone else who would be interested in a product like this, I had a fear of flying. I'm 27 and had avoided it all my life until I found out I would have to take not one, but FOUR flights. I already suffer from anxiety so I decided to try this product based on the reviews on here and on Itunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is the best book on travel related advice i have ever read, and its surprisingly interesting compared to most guides you would read. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book on long-term travel
A terrific read - either for the armchair traveler or those (like me) who are seriously contemplating a long-term travel adventure. Rolf breaks down all the BS excuses that we make for ourselves not to travel, and hold out the lure of learning and self-discovery. Highly recommended. The only reason the book didn't get 5 stars is that it's too short - not a huge problem - and the various quotes from other travel writers are distracting and not always helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vagabonding
Mr. Potts does a nice job of putting forth some of the basics of long term travel. His style is clean and straightforward with plenty of personall experience thrown in for good measure. This is a great book for anyone with an interest in world travel. ... Read more

Melissa Brayer Hess and Patricia Linderman truly deliver in The Expert Expatriate. If you are even considering a move overseas, read this to get a good look at the reality of such a life change and the preparation you should undertake.Be sure to read each of the inserts recounting personal experiences of expats all over the world! This book will help prepare you for succesful adaptation to any newenvironment and takes special consideration of the needs of the family and children. You will be impressed by, and surely grateful for, the relentlessly thorough content.Their advice is clearly based on the authors' extensive personal experience and my cherished copy wears a fringe of neon Post-It arrow markers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Knowledge for Temporary situations
I got the book because I am contemplating moving overseas, permanently. This book is wonderful for all those out there that are moving to a different country because of work, and will eventually be returning home. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance
I've used KRS'CD for pre-flight and on-flight jitters. This CD is one of the best relaxation aids I've found for flying discomfort. The meditations are right-on, every sentence supporting the strength we have inside, while dissipating nervousness.I love her voice and her no-nonsense style.
5-0 out of 5 stars MESMERIC& MEDITATIONAL!
What could be easier than popping the CD into the player, sitting back and relaxing.KRS has a confident soothing voice and the background music helps to keep things calm. For those of us with flying anxieties, FLY WITHOUT FEAR is a great tool to help settle the nerves.
1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me.KRS's voice was annoying. Background music shrill and not comforting.
I am terrified of flying and have read every book published and listened to every audio available to alleviate the Fear of Flying.KRS Edstrom's CD did not help me.I found KRS's voice to be high pitched, nasally, and not comforting. The way she accentuates words on the CD during her dialogue is overdone and has a rehearsed/fake quality to it.I have a very sophisticated sound system and had to pass the CD through several parametric EQ's and digital vocoders before I found it relaxing enough to listen to.As a classical musician, I found the background classical music she chose to be anxiety-provoking.During any classical music piece, there are buildups that induce severe tension in the listener.I found her musical selections to be more of a "build-up" quality rather than a relaxation quality.Overall, it was very unnerving, and I was always more tense after listening to her recording than before. Her ideas are good but her presentation is terrible. One of her ideas that I didn't like was focusing on the negatives, and releasing the negative energies. This just made me perseverate on the negatives. If you are fearful of flying and think an audio presentation would help you, steer toward Glenn Harrold's "Overcome the Fear of Flying."It is much much better. The dynamics of his voice are very relaxing, the music is absolutely masterful, and it puts you in a much better state of relaxation. Please visit my review of his CD on this website. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This should really be in the investment section...
Why?Anytime you plan on doing something that has "value" in it, anytime you want to buy low, when the price will most likely be higher later on, or anytime you are contrarian to where everyone else is going - that's smart investing.

Editorial Review

Many dream of traveling the world, but few actually do so. If you've decided to put your money where your fantasy is and save for the trip of trips, Edward Hasbrouck is your travel guru. He's circumnavigated the world twice, and coordinates a travel agent's around-the-world department. He explains why you ought to chose (and stick to) your route in advance but needn't start and finish in the same city, and above all why you ought to take the travel plunge. He shares hard-won truths about saving money--and in Thailand or Bali $100 saved earns an extra month of freedom. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars waaaaaayyyy too much information
This book is exhaustive to the point of being exhausting - and as such isn't really useful for anyone who's traveled at least once overseas. The book is divided into sections on choosing destinations, surface transportation (100 pages!), air transportion (140 pages!), travel docs, safety and health, baggage, practicalities, the bottom line, and resources. Some of the information was useful - such on how to take advantage of open jaw airline tickets - but so much of it is a rehash of what every traveler knows.I mean, I didn't need to pay $22 to learn that I should use a credit card when making travel plans.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Around the World Travel
My husband and I are currently traveling through Asia and used Edward Hasbrouck's book in preparation for our trip. It is a comprehensive book, that explores every aspect of around the world travel. He covers everything you need to know and more, from preparation of paperwork to interacting with people along the way. He is a expert in this field -- one of the best, and he generously shares his knowledge in this book. Travelers are fortunate to have such expertise in their hands, what it would take years for an individual to acquire is shared here. His compilation of fact and opinion is well-balanced. He also includes an excellent resource section, with many books and websites for further research. Starting your research with this book will save you a lot of time and effort -- it's all right here.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book brought me relief!
I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified (and ill) in the middle of the night with uncontrollable anxiety weeks before the flight. Just the thought of getting on a plane sent me into an emotional and physical tailspin (pardon the pun). I too, knew that it was irrational, but the fear was so viceral and so out of my control, I finally sought help. A therapist suggested that the anxiety and subsequent vomitting was due to an overdose of adrenaline, and that is about all the help she could offer. I bought this book after reading the other reviews on line. I read it in a day, and over the next three flights I took after reading it, each flight became easier and easier. The last flight I took I genuinely enjoyed and I didn't need to take any anti-anxiety medicine. The book teaches you that the noises you hear a plane make are the noises it *should* be making. I always used to fear that the planes engines were failing upon ascent because you could hear them "loose power." I had no idea the pilots had that much control over the engines and that sometimes, for example, they just need to slow down the planes to comply with neighborhood noise ordinances! The book teaches you about weather conditions, and turbulance, and how planes and pilots have astounding abilities to handle them both. Sure, I still might sometimes (only sometimes) get a little jittery before a flight, but I feel that, like anything else, fear stems from the unknown, and when I educated myself on how planes work and how flying works, my fear went away. This book really, really made a huge difference in my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knuckles No Longer White
Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Whole Lotta Help
Although not an uninteresting exploration of many of the aspects of flying, this book does not seem likely to truly alleviate many of the fears of the uncertain flier. It is one thing to understand the mechanics of flying, but quite another to get detailed descriptions of emergency procedures when something goes wrong. Those of us who suffer or have suffered bouts of unnecessary white-knuckled flying want to know how the plane stays in the air, why it is unlikely that something will go wrong and what all those noises and sensations are that may set us off. We also want to know what is going on in the cockpit during a normal flight, since most of us realize that once we've landed, we've once again experienced a normal flight...There are much better books than this one if you want to conquer any fear of flying....END ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Compact, Comprehensive Guide to Tipping in the US.
"The Itty Bitty Guide to Tipping " is a fairly comprehensive reference for gratuity customs in the United States. If you've ever wondered when a tip is expected or worried that you have embarrassed yourself by leaving too much or too little, the information in this little book will put your mind at ease. Following a brief Introduction and "History of Tipping", the tipping advice is divided into 9 chapters, each for a different situation in which you will be expected to tip: Dining Out, Transportation, Lodging, Personal Care, House Calls, Weddings & Other Special Events, Casinos & Cruise Ships, Going Abroad, and Off the Beaten Path (which discusses tips for more exotic service providers, such as tattoo artists and lap dancers). Each chapter begins by describing the topic and"the players", those service persons whom you will encounter and possibly need to tip. This is followed by an explanation of the job each service provider does for you, accompanied by the appropriate tip. At the end of each chapter, there is a "tipping chart", which allows you to see whom and how much to tip at a glance. Also included throughout the book are bits of tipping trivia, advice on when not to tip, and ideas for how to plan and organize your tipping expenses. The "Going Abroad" chapter differs from the others in that it is organized by continent, and then by country, and its tipping guidelines are more general in nature. There are tip tables in the back of the book for calculating 15 and 20 per cent gratuities. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars more taboos than do.
This book is told, in a loose, style. The book repeats itself, from chapter,to chapter. and it`s more ho hum thanfunny. However, there are some lol,in this book, but they're a chore, to find.Axtell; fails to follow his own advice. "68% of your audience will quit listening, if you talk more than 20 minutes." This book is useful, for first time globe trotters, The lol chapter on cruising, is worth the price of the book.this book would've been better, if it include samples of lol jokes, from around the world.

I read Mr. Axtell's book on use of humor in theinternational business environment with great interest. I also had quite a few good laughs doing that. I must confess, however, that I was a little disappointed by the factthat such a great deal of the anecdotes presented in this book have beencirculating on the internet for a long time already.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A ValuableTool
The author has written a book packed so full of valuable information and wisdom that every woman who travels anywhere should read it over and over again. Many of the tips are just as valid when applied to domestic travel as to travel in foreign lands.2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but better books exist
This book is a nice place for women travelers to start, but the book Travel Tips for the Sophisticated Woman by Lara Vestanen has far more depth and really useful tips. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not the typical
Some new viewpoints and useful information. Doing the laundry in a trash can enroute? You betcha! Hints for freebie overnights and how to deal with medical issues. I found this book very informative, and it covers many aspects of RV travel.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Lot Light on Detail
I bought several books on full-timing in an RV - and this was the least helpful. While they touch on many topics, none are explored in depth - I learned nothing new from this book. In fact, I felt they kept telling me things that are simply commom sense. For example, in their section about waste water, they don't tell you how to deal w/ frozen waste lines - but they do advise you not flush disposable diapers! Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, but desperately needs a fact-checker
There aren't many books to help one navigate social customs in the diverse cultures of Asia, and for that reason this book is extremely useful. The author admirably tries to give depth and context to the rules of etiquette in Asia by providing some historical, cultural and religious background, but, unfortunately, he gets a lot of that stuff wrong. For example, he says the Buddha was a "wealthy Brahmin priest". In fact, he was a Kshatriya (warrior caste) prince. This is a key factor in his renunciation of wordly things, and important to know if you want to understand the role of the Buddha and Buddhism in India.
5-0 out of 5 stars Open the door to another culture
I teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. We receive students fromAsia and Europe who visit for 3 weeks to 6 months to improve their writtenand spoken English. What I often spend a lot of time doing, espeicallywith students from countries that are foreign to me, is deceiphering theircustoms and automatic responses to new situations. For example, a guyfrom Egypt walked with me to his apartment to give him a book.I wasperspiring so when we reached his bedroom, he pulled out a red box andsprayed cologne on my shirt's armpits, in front of my shirt and on my leftand right ear."Now you will feel fresh."Well, I'm waiting forDean Allen Foster's book on North Africa or the Middle East, because hisbook about customs in Asia is stellar.I highly recommend its ability togive near-instant insight into the mores and traditions of foreigncultures. To meet a guy from Japan or China without knowing the stuff inthis book is like entering a supermarket without a map of the store andexpecting to find toilet paper quickly. This book is like an aisle guideto the store and it might even point out that toilet paper is sold in adifferent container than you expect. the book helped me overcome somemisconceptions (and fears) that I had developed about China and I amgrateful for that.Write to me if you have other insights. stevemccrea@usa.com ...
