5-0 out of 5 stars To plan yout trip
Eyewitness Guides are beautiful, gorgeously illustrated books on glossy paper that are perfect for planning a trip but not so good for carrying along with you. But they don't need to be! I used the guide to Andalusia to plan my 5-city itinerary, including a stop in Ronda which I'd never heard of but ended up being one of the highlights of our travels. This guide gives you a general view of the sights to see, with many photos and maps. But especially in a country like Spain, the wise traveler makes his or her first stop the tourist office--there's one in every city and many towns. That's where you get your map, the info on walking tours, a schedule of museum openings and closings, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely but not so informative
As is true of DK's Eyewitness books, this book is full of fantastic pictures. It's great to wet one's appetite, but doesn't really have enough meaty information to help one prepare to visit Andalusia. It's one saving grace: great maps.I recommend this book, but not alone. This is a great companion to The Rough Guide to Andalucia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insight Guides-Andalucia
I love these books. They give brief informative descriptions along with tantalizing photos in all areas.I like very much the historiccal timeline in the beginning of each book.Although brief, it gives a great sense of what was going on throughout time in the particular location. This book starts with all history from 1000 BC.I love the pictures and cross sections as well as the brief and concise snippets on many interesting towns, sights etc.It gives a very strong visual and overview of many places so you can decide where you may actually want to visit. Of course there areth erequisite reccomendations for restaurants, hotels and travel options. These are also brief and you may want a different book or travel agaent for more suggestions in this area. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I love other lonely planet guide books, however, this Colombia version lacks INFORMATION. I feel I need to buy other books to get more info about this country before my trip there... Disappointing!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this guide
Dont buy this guide. It's a waste of money. Its totally incomplete. There is no information about the Pacific Coast or La Guajira.
1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible !
I have been a lonely planet guide book fan for many years.Unfortunately, this one is a big disappointment.I doubt the writer spent much time in the country. The info on Medellin is practically non existent. If they even bothered to read wikipedia, they could have provided 100x more info. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall
We bought the Mobile book, the "Everything" book and this book.Of the three, this had the most detailed information. The maps are not great but the rest of the book makes up for that. The regional grouping was a great help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A travel guide for readers
Let's face it; most travel books are a glance-and-go proposition. Most of them do a passable job providing key information, but they aren't exactly a pleasure to read. Frommer's New England 2003 changes all that. Not only are the cititations clear, correct, and complete, many of them are laugh-out-loud funny or wickedly sly. At the end of a busy day on the road, I actually found myself reading the guide for fun (while happily settled in one of the recommended accommodations).A literate guide obviously written by folks in the know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, But Could be Much Better!
I did a fair amount of research before deciding to purchase this particular guidebook for my week-long trip to Tokyo.I read much of it on the plane ride over, which is when began to see some of its weaknesses. The book could have stood better editing, for one thing. On p. 11, for instance, a passage reads, "Emperors became largely figureheads, manipulated by a series of powerful regents from the dominant Fujiwara family. The invention of the kana syllabary, " etc., and then immediately following "The emperors were largely figureheads, manipulated..."!
4-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Tokyo Resource
My week trip to Tokyo was made much easier with this guide. I researched a great deal before I took the trip using this book and others but this is ultimately the travel guide that came with me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory for a trip to Tokyo
I've just returned from my first 10 day trip to Tokyo and had to write about how fantastic this guide book was. The maps were excellent - especially since the streets in Tokyo are not always labeled. They enabled my group and I to find the excellent clubs, shrines, temples and restuarants with ease. All the places we checked out in the guide were fantastic and the paragraph descriptions were insightful and helpful.I will always take a Time Out Guide when traveling going forward! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Good Book"
Since this is the ONLY guidebook available for Nicaragua, we could have been stuck with whatever they gave us.But this book is quite good. The writing is clever, informative, and thorough.I used it every step of the way while traveling -- for sights to see, food to eat, and places to stay. It was such a companion for the trip, I just refer to it as "The Good Book."

3-0 out of 5 stars A good, average guide.
Honestly, I only purchased this book because of the lack of options in Nicaragua travel guides.I normaly purchase the DK eyewitness series, or AAA spiral guides, because of their pictures and maps. But, after spending a month in Nicaragua in Jan 06, I definately recommend this book.Alot of the prices are out of date, especially in regards to the hotels and stuff... but the places and locations never change, and the guide is, for the most part, right on.

I am a big supporter of the Fodor's books - for my money, they are the only travel guides you need.Fodor's Caribbean is a good case in point. This book is for two kinds of travelers: those who already know what island they are going to, and those who want to go to the Caribbean, but are unsure which island(s) to visit.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nervesof first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the mostjaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still givinginsights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations anditineraries for those with less time than money.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this guide
I am very disappointed with this guide. It had virtually no useful information about places I visited and its recommendations on hotels and restaurants were often off the mark. The contact information for hotels was outdated in many cases.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dependable
Since 12 years we always buy Lonely Planet guides for everywhere we travel. We like the Lonely Planet guide for its format and size, the hotel suggestions and the easy maps with the most important things to see and to do on it. What we miss are fine dining suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to Greece!
I spend a month every summer in Greece, and this guide is excellent! It is concise, reads very easily, and gives good common-sense recommendations on what to see and where to stay. It is as up-to-date as you can reasonably expect with changing prices and euro/dollar fluctuations.A very, very practical guide from the budget tourist to middle class.Excellent pictures, very good maps, a fine job! It reminds me, in a way, of the Michelin guides to Europe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for exploring/living in Spain
A family member gave me the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Spain as a bon voyage gift, and it has proved an essential guide on what to see, do, and eat in Spain. As someone who will be spending a bit of time in northern Spain (four months), the Eyewitness Guide has proved invaluable on excursions to nearby cities (including Madrid). Since Spain is full of thousands of monuments, churches and cathedrals, bullrings (for those who, like me, oppose the inherent cruelty of bullfights and animal abuse in Spain, one can always appreciate the architecture of famous bullrings), museums, palaces, monasteries and other places of interest, the Eyewitness Guide gives you the best of the best, with brief synopses, maps and must-sees in museums, street maps, photos, historical backgrounds and more.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Guide, Beautiful Coffee Table Book!

I am going back to Istanbul and Turkey for the fourth time. I am buying a copy of this after seeing the library copy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Istanbul
This guide is loaded with information about Istanbul.I have found it very useful in planning my trip.i had at first bought another istanbul guide and found it to be really lacking in substance.Mostly pictures, not much text, lots of platitudes designed to dazzle you, and made of heavy paper that is a drag to carry around.the lonely planet guide is lightweight, informative, good maps, and enough pictures to satisfy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oversells the city.Functional.
This books makes Istanbul sound better than it is.While the "relative" descriptions were accurate (such as place A is better than place B) I was not nearly as impressed by the city as it was described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dense, readable, helpful
A city like Madrid has centuries of art, culture, history, and cuisine to explore. It's universities lead the world in selected areas of research, and it's museums preserve not just the world's treasures for Spain, but Spain's inheritance for the world.Even ignoring the nearby country and other cities, there is a huge amount to know about this complex place and its people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Exploring Madrid
We just returned from our trip to Madrid and this book was fantastic. My sister is abroad there and my family members have all gotten different guides for their visits, but I have now loaned out both copies I had of this guide, because they found it to be much better than theirs. It has great breakdowns of the areas of Madrid and maps that are all cross-referenced.It also includes a section on Toledo that we found to be very helpful on our day trip there. We were very pleased with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness is the best travel guide!
I'm taking my second trip to Europe in September...Madrid... and again referred to my favorite travel series....Eyewitness.You really can't beat the Dorling Kindersley publishing group for travel books. As I am a little ADD, the fact that not only do they offer a very reader friendly book, but that they also chock it FULL of pictures is a huge plus.To me, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I have to give Eyewitness my seal of approval.I have been relying on Eyewitness travel guides for about 10 years now and so far, I haven't found any other travel guides that come close in comparison. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Without this book Poland wouldn't have been so much fun!
I'd wonder how much time and frustration it would take finding out all this in depth information about the country and it's attractions myself. Especially since we didn't know much about Poland in the first place. It was a true blessing having this book around, especially since many Poles at places you need it most often don't speak English or German. Only price information should need some adjustment (which might have something to do with EU membership related inflation?). I used the print which was updated in Jan 2005, but some prices already doubled!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Poland travel book
I recently went to Poland for the first time and found this book to be an absoutely wonderful guide to Warsaw, Krakow, and the Auschwitz concentration camps. All too often guide books that cover an entire country lack the kind of detail a traveler needs, but this book did not suffer that problem at all. The section on Warsaw was actually better organized and contained more detailed factual information than the DK book dedicated solely to that city. This was the only book I needed to help me get around Krakow and Auschwitz as well. I can't speak for the hotel and restaurant recommendations in the book because I never used any of them, but as far as information about historical sites and points of interest this is an outstanding book.
5-0 out of 5 stars -EXTREMELYHELPFUL-
Over the last several years eleven members of my family have made trips to Poland. Each time, we've visited a different part of the country. Our most recent trip was in April/May 2002. We all have several different travel books about Poland that we've purchased over the years. However, without consulting one another, three of us carried their copies of this book with them, and pulled them out when we met in Warsaw. We all agreed that this is the best book on traveling in Poland. As we toured through the country, we would read about the places that we would be visiting the next day.The book's information was always good and easy to locate. Even now that we've returned, we're still exchanging phone calls with advice to read a certain page in the LONELY PLANET- POLAND book for some information that we'll need for our next trip.Read more

Hello!5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for traveling to Bhutan!
I bought this guide before my first trip to Bhutan, and it helped me immensely in planning my tour. It contains detailed information about the country--history, culture, geography, and facts for travelers. And it gives accurate information about the trekking routes and cultural tours. As is typical for Lonely Planet publications, this one is interesting and well written, and I found the information to be relevant to my trip. It is not easy to travel to Bhutan (there are many government restrictions), and this book made everything easier. I had such a successful, fun trip that I've been back several times (www.jachungtravel.com), and I still refer to this edition of the guide. It's packed with good information, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go to Bhutan.

4-0 out of 5 stars In the Thunder Dragon Kingdom adorned with sandalwood
Lonely Planet is unbelieveable! They continually pump out the HIGHEST quality guidebooks, and they've done it again with this edition covering Bhutan.I have spent a good portion of my life researching, and hording information on Bhutan, and have found Lonely Planet's guidebook to contain everything and more that the traveller could ever want...with two exceptions.I think that the lack of the U'cen script in the language chapter is a serious mistake.Lonely Planet has the capacity to print in the U'cen script as they did so in their Tibet edition. My other qualm is with the sparse coverage of the smaller and admittedly FAR less visited dzongkhags (districts) (i.e., Daga, Samdrup Jongkhar, Pema Gatshel, Zhemgang, Tsirang, etc.).Lonely Planet, resolve these issues and your book will be the best it could be. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CZECH Phrasebook
Very consise and compact and easy to use.
5-0 out of 5 stars About the CZ phrasebook and the two earlier reviews
I wasn't surprised when I saw that the two earlier reviewers were from the US of A. They actually view it as the phrasebook's shortcoming that in the country at hand they actually speak some English as well. How ignorant is that?! Since the yanks probably won't know the answer to that either, here's the answer: Very. Most of the world does not speak enough English to adequately convey their sentiments, ideas, opinions, whole personality...but does that matter to angloamericans? No, they actually think that a travel experience will be as rewarding whether or not you speak thelanguage of the native residents. As long as they understand your Enligsh, all's well. I hope, for theirs sake as well, that some of these people see the error of their ways.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good investment
For only 8 dollars I think this book is a good buy. Sure, you will find people who speak English in the Czech Republic, but I think it would be 'slightly' rude that you didnt even make an effort to learn some key phrases in Czech before your visit. Czech is their official language, and if you want to have a real cultural experience rather than getting by on your English, then I would recommend looking into this product. This book will lend you some key phrases as well as background to the country and people of ancient Bohemia. I visited the Czech Republic also, and found that many of their street signs, signs in general were in Czech, and it was really useful for me to look it up in the phrasebook. Also as well as the dictionary, it has subject vocabulary, as in what to do when you're in a restaurant, what to say in a doctor's office, telling the time, things like that-mostly anything you can think of. The biggest plus of this product is that it is actually up to date, and gives you vocabulary for anything (even what to say on a date!) and isnt out of sync with the times. Also it was coveniently sized to fit into my small purse or pocket withouot being an incovenience. I think this product helped me in familiarizing myself with their culture before going there-so I wasnt as culture shocked as some of my other colleauges. I recommend this book. ... Read more
